Abstract

Purpose

This study strives to examine the relationship between bank capital and bank liquidity level considering the joint determination of both variables pointed out in the related literature. The evidence is from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. The theory of banking postulates that bank capital and bank liquidity are interrelated through various links. The study conjectures that large GCC banks do not have a concern with respect to liquidity due to the implicit guarantee of GCC wealthy governments to bank deposits.

Design/methodology/approach

The study sample is comprised of all chartered GCC conventional and Islamic banks. The study employs several on-balance sheet ratios to proxy for bank capital and liquidity as defined in the banking literature. It also employs a related econometric model that considers the simultaneity issue pointed out in the related literature.

Findings

The results of the study reveal that GCC banks react positively when facing illiquidity by strengthening their capital ratio. Further analysis reveals that only small GCC banks (conventional and Islamic) tend to increase their capital levels when facing a liquidity shortage, which confirms the study conjecture that larger GCC banks have no credible concern about their liquidity position. Employing an alternative measure of liquidity does not change the results. This finding supports the financial fragility structure and the crowding out of deposits hypotheses.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the literature by employing a novel estimation approach to explore the difference in results as the sample banks represent two banking regimes, the conventional banks as well as the Islamic banks. Also, the study implicitly suggests that further research in this area could support the need to impose minimum and globally uninformed liquidity standards on banks.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital transformation is crucial for achieving high-quality development in the construction industry. Assessing the industry's digital maturity is an urgent necessity. The Digital Transformation Maturity Model is a potential tool to systematically evaluate the digital maturity levels of various industries. However, most existing models predominantly focus on sectors such as the Internet and manufacturing, leaving the construction industry comparatively underrepresented. This study aims to address this gap by developing a maturity model tailored specifically for digital transformation within the construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This study leverages the Capability Maturity Theory and integrates the unique characteristics of the construction industry to construct a comprehensive maturity model for digital transformation. The model comprises five critical dimensions: industry environment, strategy and organization, digital infrastructure, business process and management digitization, and digital performance. These dimensions encompass a total of 25 assessment indexes. To validate the model's feasibility and effectiveness, a digital transformation maturity assessment was conducted within China's construction industry.

Findings

The results of the maturity assessment within the Chinese construction industry reveal that it currently operates at the third level of digital maturity (defined level). The industry's maturity score stands at 2.329 out of 5. This outcome indicates that the developed model is accurate and reliable in assessing the level of digital transformation maturity within the construction industry.

Originality/value

This paper contributes both practical and theoretical insights to the field of digital transformation within the construction industry. By creating a tailored maturity model, it addresses a significant gap in existing research and offers a valuable tool for assessing and advancing digital maturity levels within this industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This research paper aims to conceptualize digital transformation governance and its conventional mechanisms and to present governance solutions tailored to an organization’s level of digital maturity. The objective is to provide a framework for large organizations to select appropriate governance mechanisms based on their digital maturity level, enabling them to effectively manage and govern their digital transformation journey.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a meta-synthesis methodology, systematically reviewing and synthesizing findings from 175 academic papers and 31 reports/white papers. The research involves a rigorous qualitative approach, including literature search, selection of relevant texts, information extraction, analysis of qualitative findings, quality control and presentation of findings.

Findings

The proposed model suggests a three-tiered approach to digital transformation governance based on the organization’s digital maturity: “beginner,” “intermediate” and “advanced” stages. The findings indicate that as an organization advances in its digital maturity, its governance mechanism tends to be less centralized and involves multiple relevant units. Conversely, organizations with lower digital maturity require a more concentrated approach to digital governance.

Research limitations/implications

The study is based on a systematic review and synthesis of existing literature. Further empirical research could validate and refine the proposed model.

Practical implications

By using the proposed maturity-driven model, organizations can choose a more suitable and effective governance mechanism for the realization of their digital transformation roadmap based on their digital maturity level. The model offers a comprehensive framework for selecting and combining appropriate governance mechanisms at each maturity stage.

Originality/value

The proposed framework offers a strategic and novel yet practical tool, enabling organizations to advance their digital governance capabilities in sync with their transformation roadmap. The study consolidates dispersed findings and expands the range of viable governance mechanisms contingent on digital progression.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose and theoretical contributions of this paper are to improve current knowledge on culture's role in firms' digital transformation, as well as to identify and add a cultural “digital maturity” lens to well-known, already actionable frameworks for the digital transformation of firms.

Design/methodology/approach

To increase current knowledge on culture's role in firms' digital transformation, as well as to identify and add a cultural “digital maturity” lens to well-known and actionable frameworks for the digital transformation of firms, a multi-step approach was chosen, including both literature reviews as well as a qualitative study of one company case.

Findings

Early generations of digital transformation frameworks, mainly from the field of information systems (IS), did not take into consideration firms' culture. More recent research in the fields of management and organization, however, emphasizes the role of culture and key cultural attributes favorable for a digital transformation. By integrating key findings on digital transformation from these research fields, a multi-disciplinary framework could be presented, allowing any organization to plan, organize and monitor a digital transformation from three essential lenses: technical (processes and actions for transforming), social (transformation of norms and behavior) and macro (transformation of the perception of the outside world).

Research limitations/implications

Only one case study was included in this study. The developed multi-disciplinary framework needs to be tested in more cases.

Practical implications

Practitioners can use the new integrated framework above for evaluating the conditions for, and the progression of a digital transformation, by using the developed framework and by applying the three lenses.

Social implications

Originality/value

The paper contributes a new multi-disciplinary integrated framework for the digital transformation of enterprises and a further understanding of the impact of culture in the transformation of the firm.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a modular and prescriptive digital transformation maturity model whose constituent elements have conceptual integrity as well as reveal the priority weights of maturity model components.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review with a concept-centric analysis enlightens the characteristics of constituent parts and reveals the gaps for each component. Therefore, the interdependency network among model dimensions and priority weights are identified using decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL)-based analytic network process (ANP) method, including 19 industrial experts, and the results are robustly validated with three different analyses. Finally, the applicability of the developed maturity model and the constituent elements are validated in the context of the manufacturing industry with two case applications through a strict protocol.

Findings

Results obtained from DEMATEL-based ANP suggest that smart processes with a priority weight of 17.91% are the most important subdimension for reaching higher digital maturity. Customer integration and value, with a priority weight of 17.30%, is the second most important subdimension and talented employee, with 16.24%, is the third most important subdimension.

Research limitations/implications

The developed maturity model enables companies to make factual assessments with specially designed measurement instrument including incrementally evolved questions, prioritize action fields and investment strategies according to maturity index calculations and adapt to the dynamic change in the environment with spiral maturity level identification.

Originality/value

A novel spiral maturity level identification is proposed with conceptual consistency for evolutionary progress to adapt to dynamic change. A measurement instrument that is incrementally structured with 234 statements and a measurement method that is based on the priority weights and leads to calculating the maturity index are designed to assess digital maturity, create an improvement roadmap to reach higher maturity levels and prioritize actions and investments without any external support and assistance.

Abstract

Purpose

Industry 4.0 is characterised by systemic transformations occurring exponentially, encompassing an array of dynamic processes and technologies. To move towards a more sustainable future, it is important to understand the nature of this transformation. However, construction enterprises are experiencing a capacity shortage in identifying the transitional management steps needed to navigate Industry 4.0 better. This paper presents a maturity model with the acronym “Smart Modern Construction Enterprise Maturity Model (SMCeMM)” that provides direction to construction enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

It adopts an iterative procedure to develop the maturity model. The attributes of Industry 4.0 maturity are obtained through a critical literature review. The model is further developed through knowledge elicitation using modified Delphi-based expert forums and subsequent analysis through qualitative techniques. The conceptual validity of the model is established through a validation expert forum.

Findings

The research defines maturity characteristics of construction enterprises across five levels namely ad-hoc, driven, transforming, integrated and innovative encompassing seven process categories; data management, people and culture, leadership and strategy, automation, collaboration and communication, change management and innovation. The maturity characteristics are then translated into assessment criteria which can be used to assess how mature a construction enterprise is in navigating Industry 4.0.

Originality/value

The results advance the field of Industry 4.0 strategy research in construction. The findings can be used to access Industry 4.0 maturity of general contractors of varying sizes and scales and generate a set of recommendations to support their macroscopic strategic planning.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital technologies promise efficiency gains and untapped opportunity. Adoptions of digital technology lead firms to rethink their organizational setup and existing practices. This paper aims to present a management innovation-based framework that describes new processes and practices for digital transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a structural equation modeling approach to test the framework with survey responses from a sample of 901 Taiwanese organizations – both local firms and multinational subsidiaries – to explore the linkages between adoption of digital technologies and digital maturity.

Findings

The results reveal that management innovation mediates the relationship between digital technology adoption and digital maturity. Moreover, fast-paced environments have a greater impact of management innovation toward digital maturity than slow-paced environments.

Originality/value

This study adds to emerging research that considers the role of organizational learning in digital transformation efforts. The extent to which organizations link the lessons from direct experience to digital routines through which management innovation is implemented determines to a large extent whether this strategic initiative is optimized by the firm. More generally, the findings point to the mutual importance of digital maturity and experiential learning efforts, and suggest a specific means by which learning processes are mobilized by innovating organizations. This study contributes to digital transformation research by providing insight into how a firm can restart failed transformation initiatives of this kind.

Abstract

Purpose

This study introduces the Digital Maturity Assessment Model (DMAM), a model tailored to assess the digital maturity of SMEs, tracing its development from addressing business challenges to establishing a comparative analysis framework grounded in Resource Dependence Theory (RDT).

Design/methodology/approach

DMAM is based on positivist philosophy and objectivist epistemology, supported by Design Science Research (DSR) and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). The methodology involves iterative development, from problem identification to creating a practical solution for assessing SMEs' digital maturity and guiding digitalization efforts.

Findings

DMAM offers a clear and specific methodology, distinguishing itself by addressing the unique needs of SMEs, particularly resource-dependent ones. The model’s development fills critical gaps in existing literature and provides a practical artifact for SMEs' digitalization.

Originality/value

DMAM is original in its focus on the specific needs of resource-dependent SMEs, offering actionable recommendations and addressing shortcomings in existing models. It serves as a foundational framework for SMEs' digital transformation, making a significant contribution to the digital maturity assessment literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a digital transformation model in hospitals. This study proposes a digital transformation model in hospitals by formulating dimensions and sub-dimensions. The proposed hospital digital transformation model outlines why and how each of dimensions and sub-dimensions are important in the hospital digital transformation model.

Design/methodology/approach

This study chose the type of qualitative research using a phenomenology approach. This study used observation techniques and in-depth interviews with 11 informants and conducted group discussion forums with information technology governance experts, a hospital information technology department manager who has an information technology background, and doctor representatives. The data were documented and analyzed using triangulation techniques.

Findings

This research provides empirical insights into the dimensions and sub-dimensions of hospital digital transformation models. The findings of the digital transformation dimension in hospitals are 7 dimensions and 37 sub-dimensions, namely, the governance and management dimension which has 8 sub-dimensions; the person has 9 sub-dimensions; strategy dimension which has 5 sub-dimensions; information technology capability has 3 sub-dimensions; the data interoperability dimension has 3 sub-dimensions; the data analytics dimension has 5 sub-dimensions; patient dimensions have 4 sub-dimensions; the findings of the sub-dimensions involved in the digital transformation dimension of the hospital can provide input on the accuracy of the indicators measuring the hospital’s digital transformation.

Research limitations/implications

This research is limited to the qualitative type of phenomenology approach so that future research can test empirically with quantitative methods with techniques through surveys of dimensional and sub-dimensional relationships to hospital digital transformation. The researchers also recommend further assessing the findings of this paper which can develop as a model for measuring the maturity of hospital digital transformation.

Practical implications

This paper covers the implications of developing a hospital digital transformation model that can be used to organize and manage hospital digital transformation.

Originality/value

This paper can be used as a guideline for hospital stakeholders when carrying out digital transformation. This paper can be used as a reference for further research to find, study and develop dimensions and sub-dimensions of digital transformation models.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines how maturity mismatch, a specific type of financial structure of firms, affects corporate outward foreign direct investment (OFDI).

Design/methodology/approach

Using the number of newly established foreign subsidiaries in a given year as firm-level OFDI and utilizing data from Chinese listed firms between 2007 and 2022, we employ a negative binomial regression model to examine the impact of corporate maturity mismatch on the OFDI. We also make efforts to ensure the robustness of the result, such as employing an exogenous policy to establish a difference-in-difference model.

Findings

The empirical result indicates that maturity mismatch inhibits firms' OFDI. Additional test shows that maturity mismatch increases firms' financing costs and reduces firms' research and development (R&D) investment and that the negative impact of maturity mismatch on OFDI is predominantly observed in firms with high financial constraints and low R&D intensity, indicating that maturity mismatch may affect firms' OFDI through the financing cost channel and the R&D investment channel.

Originality/value

Corporate maturity mismatch is common in China and similar emerging markets. However, research on the economic consequences of maturity mismatch, especially its impact on firms' overseas expansions, is rare. This study establishes the relationship between corporate maturity mismatch and OFDI, contributes to the literature on the relationship between financial factors and OFDI, and provides policy implications for emerging market countries.
