Abstract

Examines the interrelationship between price, product and investment policy and costs, interdependence of product and price polices, and the effect of fluctuation in economy. Posits that there are several intrusive factors operating on this system of relationships with respect to the sales market, e. g. the state of the economy, competition and technical advances. Identifies three strategies which may be employed in the case of changeover from one state to another. Concludes that the policy employed by an organization is dependent on the market position of a product and its durability pre‐recession.

Abstract

Reports the findings of a study that examined the relative impact of various marketing strategies on the performance of mature products in a rapidly developing country, South Korea, from a contingency theory perspective. The results indicate that the competitive environment of the maturity stage in the product life cycle in Korea can be classified into four distinctive types and that different strategies have different effects on product performance for each type of environment. The results also suggest that generally, vertical integration and product/ service improvement strategies have the most significant influence on the performance of the mature products in Korea. Discusses implications of the results for domestic and international marketers in the country.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a design and investigation of novel vanillin-based thiol-ene photocurable systems as candidate materials for optical three-dimensional printing.

Design/methodology/approach

Two vanillin acrylates, vanillin dimethacrylate and vanillin diacrylate, were tested in thiol-ene photocurable systems with 1,3-benzenedithiol. The kinetics of photocross-linking was investigated by real-time photorheometry using two photoinitiators, diphenyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide or ethyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phenylphosphinate in different quantities. The dependencies of rheological properties of resins on the used vanillin derivative, photoinitiator, and the presence of a solvent, as well as structure, thermal and mechanical properties of the selected polymers were investigated.

Findings

The most rigid polymers were obtained from vanillin diacrylate-based resins without any solvent. The vanillin diacrylate-based polymer possessed higher values of cross-linking density, the yield of insoluble fraction, thermal stability and better mechanical properties in comparison to the vanillin dimethacrylate-based polymer.

Originality/value

The kinetics of photocross-linking of vanillin-based thiol-ene systems was investigated by real-time photorheometry for the first time. The designed novel photocurable systems based on vanillin acrylates and 1,3-benzenedithiol are promising renewable photoresins for optical three-dimensional printing on demand.

Abstract

Intrinsic motivation occurs due to positive reactions that arise directly from engagement in work activities. Scholars have asserted that intrinsic motivation plays an important role in organizational phenomena such as creativity (George, 2007), leadership (Piccolo & Colquitt, 2006), and performance (Gagné & Deci, 2005). We review the research literature on intrinsic motivation and provide an overview and integration of the leading theories. We then develop a conceptual model in which positive affect serves as a primary cause of intrinsic motivation. We discuss how affect alone may induce intrinsic motivation, how affect may lead to nonconscious experiences of intrinsic motivation, and how affect and cognitions may work in concert to produce the strongest and most persistent intrinsic motivation experiences. We conclude by suggesting new avenues for research that might be pursued using this cognitive–affective model of intrinsic motivation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a conceptual overview of linkages between buen vivir and social enterprise as emerging from a review of the literature regarding indigenous development approaches in Latin America. As reported in the literature such approaches aim to reduce poverty and affirm indigenous cultural identities through the sustainable use of natural resources.

Design/methodology/approach

The conceptual arguments build on a review of literature regarding social enterprise, mainly in its European conception, on social and solidarity economy according to several Latin American scholars, and on streams of literature related to indigenous development and indigenous entrepreneurship.

Findings

Against the failure of externally‐driven developmental policies, social enterprise can be considered as a useful vehicle for indigenous peoples to establish direct control and management of natural resources and territories that constitute an important step towards their self‐determination and self‐managed development.

Research limitations/implications

An empirical validation of the presented argument is lacking in this paper and further empirical work is needed.

Originality/value

The paper is an attempt to provide a general conceptualization of social enterprise as a meaningful tool for the development of indigenous peoples in Latin America, bringing together different concepts borrowed from theories on social enterprise, social and solidarity economy and indigenous development.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the appropriate course of actions of any executive toward attaining business excellence, under the limitations and particular conditions that arise in an economic crisis environment.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper takes the approach of an extended literature review.

Findings

Business excellence is an ideal path for any enterprise which seeks the attainment of a strong competitive advantage in times of economic crisis. This path, through the implementation of the principles of Total Quality Management, leads to a strategic plan that helps the enterprise not only to survive but also to strengthen its position while exploiting opportunities that arise during the recession. The basic elements of such a plan are the satisfaction of all customers and stakeholders, the quest for innovation and the implementation of an aggressive policy in marketing and investments. Toward this target, the most crucial elements are the involvement of the management and, second, the commitment and efforts of all human resources.

Practical implications

The business community and specifically the higher management of any company could reformulate its strategic plan according to the findings of this survey, in order to gain a sustainable competitive advantage over competition.

Originality/value

On the basis of extended literature review, there has been no research work to connect the strategic thinking of enterprises and their management with business excellence in times of economic crisis, which is attempted in this paper. The added value of attaining this goal during harsh times should be a beacon for the higher management in its quest for sustainable competitiveness.

Abstract

Reported are three experimental studies which assess the consensual availability of the interpretive variables of the behavioural perspective model (BPM) of consumer choice. In Study 1, students (N = 39) acting as judges rated 18 consumer behaviour settings according to their relative scope; in Study 2, students (N = 18) acting as judges rated 18 consumer situations according to their respective contingency categories predicted by the model. Study 3 involved a simplification of the procedure tested in the second experiment: two market research executives used simplified descriptions of the consumer situations to allocate them within the BPM contingency matrix. The studies confirm the consensual availability of the variables employed in the model, confirming the relevance of its variables to the interpretation of consumer behaviour in situ. They also permit the comparison of the performances of student and non‐student participants as expert judges for experiments of this kind.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent international experiences of community inclusion have produced a major change in residential care for people with intellectual disability (ID). Assignment and outcome assessment through new person‐centred measures are raising increasing interest; however, the information on quality of life and accommodation is still limited. This paper aims to provide an overview of the application of quality of life models and the size of the provision of different living arrangements.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic mapping of the literature of the last decade was followed by an expert guided review of the available evidence.

Findings

QoL outcomes measures of living arrangements in people with ID show conceptual and methodological challenges. The following key topics were identified: individual level: issues related to health status, behavioural problems and other personal factors (ageing, choice and empowerment); family and peers; local level: accommodation, architecture and urbanization, and economic aspects (deprivation and costs); macro level: social participation (community inclusion). The residential solutions that are currently considered of highest efficiency are small apartments in the community and “cluster centers”.

Originality/value

The level of quality of life is very relevant in the assessment of living arrangements in people with ID although its assessment still shows significant limitations. Some accommodation typologies seem more effective than others. New conceptual models of inclusive residential care support the convenience of a wide range of accommodation alternatives that may fit the individual needs of a highly heterogeneous population group. A unique residential alternative, albeit optimal from a community care perspective, may not be adequate for all persons with ID.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the relationship between open innovation (measured by exploratory and exploitative linkages) and firm-level innovative activity in the offshore renewable energy (ORE) sector.

Design/methodology/approach

A unique, purpose-built survey that targeted firms operating in the ORE sector and its supply chain was used. The data provides novel insights into the research activities and networking capabilities of an industry in its infant stages of development. Regression models are used to estimate the relationship between firm-level external linkages and innovative activity.

Findings

Exploratory linkages are positively related to more innovative activity. This relationship is subject to diminishing returns, distinguishing the ORE sector from other sectors. Collaborating with suppliers and accessing scientific journals are conducive to research and development (R&D) activity and process innovation, whilst collaborating with customers is associated with the decision to introduce new products and processes.

Originality/value

This study provides evidence of a positive, but curvilinear, relationship between external knowledge linkages and innovative activity, adding novel insights into the relationship between open innovation (OI) strategies, research and innovation outcomes for firms predominantly in the introductory stages of the technological life cycle with limited commercialisation experience. The nuanced finding that specific linkages matter for certain research and innovation (R&I) outcomes adds deeper complexity to March’s (1991) framework, where tailoring certain exploratory or exploitative linkages to specific innovation activities is important.
