Abstract

In this paper, thermal analysis for a 1,200 A, 3.3 kV insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) module was investigated and analysed using the three‐dimensional transmission line matrix (3D‐TLM) method. This paper also reviews the present status of the use of various thermal heat spreaders such as AlSiC MMC, Cu‐Mo and graphite‐Cu MMC and compares these with copper based heat spreaders and the use of aluminium nitride (AlN), diamond and BeO as substrates and their effect to dissipate the heat flux in heat sources localised in IGBT module design. The TLM method was found to be a versatile tool which is ideally suited to the modelling of many power electronic devices and which proved very useful in the study of transient thermal effects in a variety of device structures.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review extant literature and to provide perspectives on approaches to enhancing built environment sustainability in Africa. There is a mismatch between global societal resources and the increasing demand for natural resources. The consequences of this mismatch are prevalent in many African countries, causing the need to implement of built environment sustainability as a matter of cause.

Design/methodology/approach

Little research has been undertaken to date with a focus on the environmental sustainability of Africa. With this in mind the review was undertaken through a series of incremental steps. It began with an initial review, before developing through exploratory and development phases. The process culminated with the refined literature review presented.

Findings

The paper finds that a different approach is required to achieve built sustainable development for developed and developing countries, with a clear difference in terms of its application observed between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Current energy and water crisis facing Africa is brought to the fore and an evaluation is provided of the systems being used to ameliorate its effects. The study explores a range of technological solutions that are appropriate for consideration in the African context. It also examines the barriers that need to be overcome to facilitate the widespread use of the suggested solutions in Africa.

Originality/value

This study examines built environment sustainability through the Africa lens. It highlights its importance and the contextual factors inhibiting the widespread uptake of built environment sustainability solutions. The study offers a number of recommendations for the future to encourage long-term built environment sustainability in Africa and more specifically the Sub-Saharan region.

Abstract

Purpose

Power modules including the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) are widely used in the applications of motor drivers. The thermal behavior of these modules makes it important to choose the optimum design of cooling system. The purpose of this paper is to propose an RC thermal model of the dynamic electro‐thermal behavior of IGBT pulse width modulation inverter modules.

Design/methodology/approach

The electrothermal model has been implemented and simulated with a MATLAB simulator and takes into account the thermal influence between the different module chips based on the technique of superposition.

Findings

This study has led to a correction of the junction temperature values estimated from the transient thermal impedance of each component operating alone.

Originality/value

In this paper, an experimental technique of a thermal influence evaluation is presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the wind energy technologies using the social network analysis based on patent information. Analysis of patent documents with social network analysis is used to identify the most influential and connected technologies in the field of wind energy.

Design/methodology/approach

In the literature, patent data are often used to evaluate technologies. Patents related to wind energy technologies are obtained from the United States Patent and Trademark Office database and the relationships among sub-technologies based on Corporate Patent Classification (CPC) codes are analyzed in this study. The results of two-phase algorithm for mining high average-utility itemsets algorithm, which is one of the utility mining algorithm in data mining, is used to find associations among wind energy technologies for social network analysis.

Findings

The results of this study show that it is very important to focus on wind motors and technologies related to energy conversion or management systems reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The results of this study imply that Y02E, F03D and F05B CPC codes are the most influential CPC codes based on social network analysis.

Originality/value

Analysis of patent documents with social network analysis for technology evaluation is extremely limited in the literature. There is no research related to the analysis of patent documents with social network analysis, in particular CPC codes, for wind energy technology. This paper fills this gap in the literature. This study explores technologies related to wind energy technologies and identifies the most influential wind energy technologies in practice. This study also extracts useful information and knowledge to identify core corporate patent class (es) in the field of wind energy technology.
