Abstract

Key issues of the application of modelling and simulation for the management of the Malaysian Kelang Container Terminal are discussed. The aim of the investigation is to improve the logistics processes at the port. The model simulates all processes required to operate the seaport efficiently and provides detailed statistics on the seaport through‐put and utilisation characteristics with a high level of accuracy. The quay cranes allocation, the resources allocations and the scheduling of the different operations are modelled to maximise the performance of the port. The assignment of prime movers to transport containers to a yard area is also considered.

Abstract

The expert system for the selection of strategic planning technique was developed with a view of assisting an executive in selecting a strategic planning tool based on constraints such as: time, skill, finance, computer, expert advice, form and content of input, and form and content of output required to be generated. The expert system runs on IBM PC/AT or compatible, which is the minimum system requirement, and contains approximately 115 rules in the rule base. The expert system was developed in Turbo PrologTM. The premises which help in concluding a particular strategic planning tool are stored in separate file called ‘STRATEGY.DAT’ and can be consulted at the end of the session by the user. This file saves current session's premises which concluded the particular strategic planning tool. The system, after recommending a tool, outputs a list of planning phases where the implementation of such a strategic planning tool will succeed. It runs on a backward chaining inference mechanism which is a feature of Turbo PrologTM.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to scrutinize existing end-user comprehension regarding e-wallet technology through an examination of apparent usefulness, ease of use and levels of trust, and how these factors may influence a consumer’s attitudes toward the adoption of this new payment method.

Design/methodology/approach

The quota sampling method was used, and residents over the age of 22 years were targeted in online and offline questionnaires, and partial least squares-structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data.

Findings

This study indicates that existing consumer mindsets and intentions to adopt new technology, such as the e-wallet, are greatly influenced by their perception of the practicality of the product, its ease of use and their levels of trust in the technology to protect their online safety, privacy and economic affairs. Contrastingly, those participants who were offered deferred reimbursements and those given no information were demonstrably less likely to adopt the new service.

Research limitations/implications

The study sample was from a developing nation – Saudi Arabia. Similar cohorts from developing and developed countries could provide a unique cross-nation comparison.

Practical implications

This study stresses the importance of thoroughly explaining and demonstrating an innovative technology to customers while simultaneously promoting the product. Consumers can be encouraged to use and evaluate the new technology by providing inducements, such as effective reimbursement policies.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to literature by critically reflecting on the question: What are the factors influencing customer intentions to adopt the e-wallet, and how do the guarantee of reimbursement and the time frame following unauthorized use influence consumer adoption intentions when deciding to use the new payment technology?

Recent years have seen the emergence of a new industry dealing in the international disposal of garbage and various forms of waste. Emerging nations have become disposal sites for materials emanating from the developed world. Attempts to explain the rationale behind the international waste trade. Discusses the acceptance of garbage and waste by poorer nations as a public policy issue. Attempts to balance the economic logic of the acceptance decision with various ethical considerations. Concludes that waste should never be accepted but rather that the advisability of such a practice is destination‐specific and must be assessed on a case by case basis.

Abstract

Contributes to the growing body of information on the determinants of performance in new products. Examines a sample of “typical” new products (instead of the more usual comparison of successes and failures) and identifies the factors that are crucial for producing outstanding performance in the financial services sector. Shows that marketing factors (i.e. effective distribution and effective communications) are the keys to new service success. In addition demonstrates the importance of the quality of the service offered and the quality of the tangible evidence of the service as a basis of outstanding performance. These key determinants of performance need to be built on the skills of the frontline staff and the push they give to the new product. Reiterates the importance of synergy when developing new products. Product advantage is not the key success factor, contrary to previous findings in other sectors. Attributes this to the nature of the sector studied (financial services) where sustainable competitive product advantage is rarely achieved. Makes a comparison between success factors for consumer services and industrial products/services.

Faced with the obvious impossibility of remaining totally self‐sufficient whilst trying to maintain collections and services in difficult economic times, many librarians have turned to resource sharing as the answer to their problems. This article aims to review the ever growing field of literature on resource sharing in order to try to discover what resource sharing is, what need there is for it, what it is intended or hoped to achieve, what sort of resource sharing plans and schemes have been implemented, and in particular to try to find any evidence in the literature on the real benefits and actual costs involved in resource sharing which could be used as justification for such schemes in comparison with other methods of maximizing access to resources.
