Abstract

The authors focus on using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a lens through which to analyze the holistic welfare development of Black male student-athletes, namely their identity development and overall college and career readiness. The authors contend that if structured and delivered well with the appropriate supports, athletics can be more of a mobilizing mechanism for Black males versus an exploitive one. Specifically, athletic identity does not have to be exclusive, but rather one aspect of the student-athletes' multidimensional sense of self. To this end, the authors outline specific research, practice, and policy recommendations that address the unique challenges of Black male student-athletes in K-16.

Abstract

In this chapter, we examine the current research on how technology is applied to benefit students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders (EBD). First, we describe the iterative yet unpredictable nature of technological innovation to suggest that incremental successes are qualified by the creation of often unforeseen consequences. We then identify commonly used nonelectronic technologies in education to emphasize that the hoped-for advances in electronic technology have failed to deliver on their decades-old promise of educational revolution. We continue with our review of the literature on empirical studies examining how technology is used to support students with EBD. These findings indicate that the research design primarily employed in this field is single-subject. Examples of specific findings include web-based graphic organizers for student writing, virtual self-modeling for targeting student behaviors, and virtual coaching for teachers of students with EBD. We conclude by reviewing how leaders in the field of special education predict the field will change in the future. Overall, with an increased emphasis on research accessibility and practitioner-validated knowledge, and advances in neuroscience and artificial technologies, practitioners may hold a more central role to the creation and dissemination of knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of “flipping the classroom” on student performance, evaluation, and attendance in managerial accounting principles.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a crossed within-participants research design (each student experiencing both traditional instruction and simplified flipped instruction) allowing for control of individual differences between students; repeated-measures regression analysis for overall effects; quantile regression for performance-segregated effects.

Findings

Flipping the classroom resulted in significant performance improvement, particularly for lower performing students. Course evaluations indicate a few instructor-related ratings were lower for the flipped approach. Attendance was lower under the flipped approach for initial class meetings where the instructional manipulation occurred.

Research limitations/implications

The study design included a weak form of flipping. A stronger form of flipping with greater incentives for class preparation as well as lecture videos could have stronger results.

Practical implications

Flipping the classroom could be effective for application-oriented accounting courses, particularly for lower performing students.

Originality/value

This is one of very few studies on flipping providing evidence of effectiveness using a crossed within-participants research design.

Abstract

Research on self-regulation has tended to focus on goal-related performance, with limited attention paid to individuals’ affect and the role it plays during the goal-striving process. In this chapter we discuss three mechanisms to integrate affect within a control theory-based self-regulation framework, and how such integrations inform future research concerning employee stress and well-being. Specifically, affect can be viewed as a result of velocity made toward one’s desired states at work. Fast progress results in positive affect, which enhances employee well-being and reduces the detrimental effects associated with exposure to occupational stressors. On the other hand, slow or no progress elicits negative affect, which induces employee distress. Second, affect can also be considered an input of self-regulation, such that employees are required to regulate their emotional displays at work. Employees who perform emotional labor compare their actual emotional display against the desired display prescribed by display rules. Third, affect can function as a situational disturbance, altering employees’ perceptions or assessments of the input, comparator, and output for other self-regulatory processes.

Abstract

Data collected from 319 senior executives and 2477 of their subordinates from a global diversified organization were used to explore the impact of differences in individual personality orientation on the processes by which these individuals enable their workgroups. Personality orientation was defined in terms of self‐ratings on four distinct groupings derived from a k‐means cluster analysis of self‐ratings on the Myers‐Briggs Type Indicator and the Kirton Adaptation Inventory. Perceptions of enablement and ratings of executive behavior were based on questionnaires completed by subordinates. Although no differences were found with respect to the overall degree of enablement experienced by subordinates, personality orientation did affect the specific behaviors employed by executives to enable others and the degree of managerial self‐awareness exhibited (operationalized as congruence in self vs. subordinates' ratings). Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a novel framework for solving elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) over irregularly spaced meshes on bounded domains.

Design/methodology/approach

Second‐generation wavelet construction gives rise to a powerful generalization of the traditional hierarchical basis (HB) finite element method (FEM). A framework based on piecewise polynomial Lagrangian multiwavelets is used to generate customized multiresolution bases that have not only HB properties but also additional qualities.

Findings

For the 1D Poisson problem, we propose – for any given order of approximation – a compact closed‐form wavelet basis that block‐diagonalizes the stiffness matrix. With this wavelet choice, all coupling between the coarse scale and detail scales in the matrix is eliminated. In contrast, traditional higher‐order (n>1) HB do not exhibit this property. We also achieve full scale‐decoupling for the 2D Poisson problem on an irregular mesh. No traditional HB has this quality in 2D.

Research limitations/implications

Similar techniques may be applied to scale‐decouple the multiresolution finite element (FE) matrices associated with more general elliptic PDEs.

Practical implications

By decoupling scales in the FE matrix, the wavelet formulation lends itself particularly well to adaptive refinement schemes.

Originality/value

The paper explains second‐generation wavelet construction in a Lagrangian FE context. For 1D higher‐order and 2D first‐order bases, we propose a particular choice of wavelet, customized to the Poisson problem. The approach generalizes to other elliptic PDE problems.
