Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a living tribute to the leading autoethnographer, Alec Grant.

Design/methodology/approach

Alec provided Jerome with a list of names of people he might approach to write a tribute on his behalf.

Findings

The accounts describe the influence that Alec has had both as an educator and as a trusted colleague for the people approached.

Research limitations/implications

While this is a living tribute, it is about one man and could, therefore, be described as a case study. Some people wonder what can be learned from a single case study. Read on and find out.

Practical implications

Alec has carved out a path for himself. In many senses, he chose “The Road Less Travelled”. He has never shied away from challenging “The System” and defending the rights of the marginalized and socially excluded. It is not a road for the faint-hearted.

Social implications

For systems to change, radical thinkers need to show the way. “Change keeps us safe” (Stuart Bell).

Originality/value

Alec was a well-known and highly respected cognitive behavioural academic practitioner and the author of key textbooks in the field. He then decided to reinvent himself as an autoethnographer. This has brought him into contact with a much more diverse group of people. It has also brought him home to himself.

Abstract

Purpose

The main research questions critically examine online videos that draw attention to a local community of musical practice, noticing how these can potentially be included within the tourism promotion strategies. This paper develops a case study of four videos realised by the Louth County Board of the organisation Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCÉ) in Co. Louth, Ireland, as a part of the FleadhFest 2021 initiative. It highlights the role that virtual spaces have in enhancing a sense of belonging to a music/festival community as well as the possibility that visual and audio supports have in promoting and celebrating a destination and its cultural features.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis involves a netnographic examination of these videos (Janta, 2017), informed by the concept of “tourist gaze” (Urry, 1990; 2002) and influenced by film-induced tourism studies (Beeton, 2005).

Findings

Results show how festival and event organisers responded to COVID-19 social restrictions by creating a virtual space for celebrating music heritage and local musicscape, placing an emphasis on local musical scene.

Research limitations/implications

The research aims to inform future developments in how the organisation operates within and engages with virtual space, its members and a wider audience.

Originality/value

This is the first study to consider the virtual activities of CCÉ from an ethnomusicological as well as tourism, perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This research investigates the challenges and benefits of working from home and the needs that organisations should understand when adopting working from home practices.

Design/methodology/approach

Self-determination theory was used to understand the drivers of motivation when working from home, to provide a deep understanding of how organisations may support employees working from home. A cross-sectional qualitative survey design was used to collect data from 511 office workers during May and June of 2020.

Findings

Employees' needs for competence were thwarted by a lack of direction and focus, unsuitable work environment, work extensification and negative work culture. Employees' experiences and needs for relatedness were more diverse, identifying that they enjoyed spending more time with family and having a greater connection to the outdoors, but felt more isolated and suffered from a lack of interaction. Employees' experiences of autonomy whilst working from home were also mixed, having less autonomy from blurred boundaries between home and work, as well as childcare responsibilities. Conversely, there was more freedom to be able to concentrate on physical health.

Practical implications

Employee’s needs for competence should be prioritised. Organisations must be conscious of this and provide the support that enables direction and focus when working at home.

Originality/value

Swathes of research were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, but overwhelmingly focused on quantitative methods. A qualitative survey design enabled participants to answer meaningful open-ended questions, better suited to explain the complexity of their experiences, which allowed for understanding and richness not gained through previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a framework for the semantic operationalisation of the business model, which enables the automated identification of business models using content analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors approached the operationalisation of the business model by conducting a review of the organisational and management literature to derive the key business model elements highlighted in the existing research, along with their associated keywords.

Findings

The study proposed a conceptual framework that specifies a granular structure of business model elements, as well as the keywords that characterise each element. By coming down to the level of distinct keywords, the authors arrived at measurable constructs to capture the magnitude of every element in a company’s business model.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to offer a semantic operationalisation of the business model by defining the set of keywords that pertain to each element of the business model. The proposed operationalisation of the business model can aid future empirical research by serving as a tool for the automated assessment of the magnitude of every element in a company’s business model using content analysis.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo desarrollar un marco de trabajo para la operacionalización semántica de los modelos de negocio, que permita la identificación automatizada de esos modelos usando “análisis de contenido”.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Abordamos la operacionalización del modelo de negocio mediante una revisión de la literatura de organización y gestión de empresas para derivar los elementos clave de los modelos de negocio destacados en la investigación existente, junto con sus palabras clave asociadas.

Hallazgos

Nuestro estudio propone un marco conceptual que especifica una estructura detallada de los elementos de modelos de negocio, así como las palabras clave que caracterizan cada elemento. Al llegar al nivel de palabras clave distintas, obtuvimos constructos medibles para capturar la magnitud de cada elemento dentro del modelo de negocio de una empresa.

Originalidad

Nuestro estudio es el primero en ofrecer una operacionalización semántica de los modelos de negocio al definir el conjunto de palabras clave que se refieren a cada elemento del modelo de negocio. La operacionalización propuesta puede ayudar a la investigación empírica futura al servir como una herramienta para la evaluación automatizada de la magnitud de cada elemento en el modelo de negocio de una empresa mediante análisis de contenido.

Este artigo tem como objetivo desenvolver um framework para a operacionalização semântica do modelo de negócio, que possibilita a identificação automatizada de modelos de negócio por meio de análise de conteúdo.

Design/metodologia/abordagem

Abordamos a operacionalização do modelo de negócio realizando uma revisão da literatura organizacional e de gestão para derivar os principais elementos do modelo de negócio destacados nas pesquisas existentes, juntamente com suas palavras-chave associadas.

Resultados

Nosso estudo propôs um framework conceitual que especifica uma estrutura granular de elementos do modelo de negócio, assim como as palavras-chave que caracterizam cada elemento. Ao descer ao nível de palavras-chave distintas, chegamos a construtos mensuráveis para capturar a magnitude de cada elemento no modelo de negócio de uma empresa.

Originalidade

Nosso estudo é o primeiro a oferecer uma operacionalização semântica do modelo de negócio, definindo o conjunto de palavras-chave que se referem a cada elemento do modelo de negócio. A operacionalização proposta do modelo de negócio pode auxiliar pesquisas empíricas futuras, servindo como uma ferramenta para a avaliação automatizada da magnitude de cada elemento no modelo de negócio de uma empresa por meio de análise de conteúdo.

In recent years, international bodies and public opinion have recommended that governments adopt social responsibility practices to inform and be accountable to citizens about their sustainability actions in environmental, social and economic fields (Galera et al., 2014) and restore citizens' confidence in public authorities (Crane et al., 2008; Shepherd et al., 2010). Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate how perceived working conditions affect employee performance, including safety compliance and task performance, through employee well-being (i.e. job satisfaction) in the context of the coal mining sector in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses the job demands-resources model to test the relationships between working conditions, including job demands (work pressure as a challenge demand and perceived risks and hazards in the workplace and ineffectiveness of the safety system as hindrance demands), job resources (interpersonal harmony), job satisfaction and performance. This study adopts a two-wave design with a three-month lag to reduce possible common method bias.

Findings

Employees who experienced high level of challenge demands, e.g. time pressure workload, reported higher levels of task performance, and this positive relationship seemed to be robust. There is a direct effect of perceived ineffectiveness of the safety system on task performance, while the relationship between perceived risks and hazards and task performance was fully mediated by job satisfaction. Challenge demands, i.e. work pressure, did not impact much on employees’ well-being, and thus job satisfaction did not mediate the relationship between work pressure and performance. Perceived ineffectiveness of the safety system was negatively associated with safety compliance. This result is not surprising since a lack of effective safety system reflects management’s ignorance of workplace safety, which demotivates employees to enact safe behaviors. In contrast, the presence and implementation of an effective safety system would be interpreted by employees as management exhibiting a high level of commitment. Work pressure was positively not negatively related to safety compliance. One possible explanation for this finding is that the effects of work pressure on safety compliance behaviors might be dependent on contextual factors such as safety climate. Interpersonal harmony moderated the relationships between work pressure and employee performance (both safety compliance and task performance) and the relationship between perceived risks and hazards and task performance, but the role of interpersonal harmony appeared more complex. There was no significant correlation between challenging job demands and individual employee performance when there were higher levels of interpersonal harmony. The relationship between perceived risks and hazards, a hindrance job demand and task performance became positive as interpersonal harmony increased but negative as interpersonal harmony decreased.

Originality/value

This paper provides a robust integrative theoretical framework that better explains the various types of job demands and job resources in the working environment of coal mining sector in China and their relationships to employee performance. The findings also offer valuable guidance for managers trying to identify effective ways to enhance employee performance and safety in the workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to help develop “business principles for stakeholder capitalism” in two steps. First, the study defines internal logic of three theories of capitalism and two variants within each theory. Second, it examines approaches to integration into modern democratic capitalism. Treating the three theories as substitutes identifies relative strengths and weaknesses; complementarity and partial overlap approaches to integration study the institutional settings within which stakeholder capitalism operates. Empirical outcomes reflect competition between market and stakeholder businesses for participants, with institutional conditions determining the scope of collective action.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach aligns three typologies in a unique conceptual arrangement defining the three theories of capitalism: forms of capitalism, potential failures of each form and associated types of goods. The first method examines the internal logic of each theory of capitalism. The second draws on traditional narrative review of references documenting each theory of capitalism and variants together with modern Marxist anti-capitalism.

Findings

Three typologies align uniquely with the theories of capitalism, each having two variants. Both variants of stakeholder capitalism are compatible with compassionate capitalism, constitutional government or polycentric governance but not with self-interest capitalism, dictatorship or Marxism. A theory of modern democratic capitalism allocates roles for private, club and social goods with empirically variable mixes occurring across countries. Competition among different types of enterprises provides an empirical test for comparative advantages of stakeholder capitalism. Future research should consider approaches for testing the proposed conceptual scheme in practice concerning capacity to deal with grand challenges, wicked problems and black swan events.

Research limitations/implications

Research approach is limited to logical examination of theories and literature documentation without direct empirical confirmation. The study does not address practical implications for managers and public officials or social implications concerning private incentives, stakeholder cooperation or collective action.

Originality/value

Originality lies in shifting terms of debate about stakeholder capitalism from advocacy of substitute theories to understanding of its relationship to market capitalism and collective action capitalism. Value lies in explaining desirability of theoretical integration of three types of capitalism into a comprehensive framework for modern democratic capitalism.
