Abstract

The benefits associated with implementing concurrent engineering mean that more and more companies are looking to use it for their new product introduction process. Previously, methods for monitoring product development have included the use of metrics. “Predictive” metrics have also been used, but have mainly tended to focus on the software and firmware aspects of a product. Outlines metric ideas, but takes a holistic view of the product under development. Details an industrial case study which shows how information obtained during the product development process can be used to produce predictive metrics. These can be used as a means to make the development process more efficient. Discusses the benefits of predictive metrics and the impact that concurrent engineering approach has on the ability to provide these metrics.

Abstract

Describes some of the new products at the Surface World exhibition held at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. Three of the mainstream robot vendors supplying painting systems were at the show and each launched a new product. They also displayed a trend to the growth in the coating of plastic components. Another strong showing was for powder coating, and some of the leading specialist suppliers of equipment for this process were present. At present this type of coating is not generally economic for robot use.

Abstract

Considers the implications of 30 per cent quota innovation for women politicians in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and other area of India since the 1990’s. Uses a survey to explore the influence of women on policy and compares this with some previous research in London. Suggest ways this representation may be sustained.

Abstract

A report of exhibits at the Robot and Automation Show held at the NEC, Birmingham at the time of the 25th ISR. It highlights some of the new developments and products on show, leading with the description of a novel robot tube bender being exhibited for the first time. New products range from a 350kg capacity robot developed by Kuka to a high speed SCARA robot from Epson aimed at PCB odd form component placement applications currently dominated by Cartesian robots. Exhibits of software products emphasised the move to low cost PC‐based systems aimed at small robot users and systems integrators without the resources of large IT departments, notably from Deneb and BYG Systems.

Abstract

Whereas most societal commentators continue to review the historical patterns of men’s leadership in search of models for 21st-century success, few have begun to recognize, let alone appreciate, the equivalent patterns of women’s leadership and the future contributions that women could potentially make as leaders. What could and are women bringing to society as global leaders? Why at this moment in history is there such a marked increase in the number of women leaders? Are we entering an era in which both male and female leaders will shape history, both symbolically and in reality? And if so, will we discover that women, on average, lead in different ways than men, or will we learn that role (global leader) explains more than gender? This chapter reveals the accelerating trends of women joining men in senior leadership positions, establishes the relationship of women leaders to our overall understanding of global leadership, and sets forth an agenda to accomplish much needed research and understanding.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the author’s involvement in the paradigm wars of the 1980s in marketing and consumer research. In this paper, the author describes his role in the ecological succession of the discipline at a critical juncture between the early efforts of the pioneering scholars and the establishment of a mature climax community of consumer culture theorists.

Design/methodology/approach

The author employs an autobiographical approach.

Findings

Among the many contributions of a host of talented and insightful fellow travelers, the author’s penchant for ethnographic research and anthropological analysis helped nudge the discipline into interesting new niches.

Originality/value

This personal reminiscence of the philosophical debates surrounding our interpretive turn may be triangulated with others to construct a synchronic account of a moment in disciplinary evolution.

Abstract

A report on robots at the Manufacturing Week exhibition, highlighting some of the developments on show in the man‐machine interface field. This reveals that the Windows environment is becoming increasingly popular for robot manufacturers. Special attention is given to the exhibits of two robot companies. In the first, a new robot off‐line programming and simulation system from Kuka is described. Its uniqueness is that the robot controller logic module and software is embedded into the off‐line programming PC, so that developed programs can be directly downloaded to the robot. The second, shown by System Devices, is a Windows‐based programming support package developed by Epson for its SCARA robots.
