Abstract

Many economic and business problems require a set of random variates from the posterior density of the unknown parameters. The set of random variates can be used to integrate numerically many forms of functions. Since a closed form of the posterior density of models in time series analysis is not usually well known, it is not easy to generate a set of random variates. As a sampling scheme based on the probabilities proportional to sizes of the sample space, sampling importance resampling (SIR) method can be applied to generate a set of random variates from the posterior density. Application of SIR to signal extraction model of time series analysis is illustrated and given a set of random variates, the procedures to compute the Monte Carlo estimator of the component of signal extraction model are discussed. The procedures are illustrated with simulated data.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on South Korea’s newly found regional leadership, as the emergent middle power of East Asia, in order to advance regional integration and institution-building. Policy leadership is observed and analyzed from an international lens, linked to the literature of middle powers. The chapter first conceptualizes middle powers in connection with the issue of international leadership, since such states often play important roles in promoting cooperation. The chapter looks especially into South Korea’s foreign policy behavior toward East Asian regional processes and how it has manifested innovative and capable leadership. More specifically, the last three presidencies of Kim Dae-jung (1998–2002), Roh Moo-hyun (2003–2008), and Lee Myung-bak (2008–2013) are scrutinized in the hope of underscoring how their particular administrations, political leadership, and strategic approaches to foreign policy toward the region influenced South Korea’s regional leadership attempts and middle power status.

Abstract

In this chapter, we update stakeholder salience research using the new lens of stakeholder work: the purposive processes of organization aimed at being aware of, identifying, understanding, prioritizing, and engaging stakeholders. Specifically, we focus on stakeholder prioritization work — primarily as represented by the stakeholder salience model — and discuss contributions, shortcomings, and possibilities for this literature. We suggest that future research focus on stakeholder inclusivity, the complexity of prioritization work within intra-corporate markets, the integration of stakeholder prioritization with other forms of stakeholder work, and the development of managerial tools for multiobjective decision making within the strategic management context.

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of organizational factors on firms' adoption and use of internal staffing strategies. In particular, we examine the different effects of firm- and branch-level factors on the adoption of internal development programs and the selection of entry-level employees. We find that firm-level factors, such as firm size and organizational prestige, are positively associated with the adoption of development programs. Branch-level factors, such as branch size and leverage ratio, are positively associated with entry-level hiring. This study offers new insight into the dynamics between different levels of organizational factors and their relationship with human resource management practices.

Abstract

Literature has numerous debates about the relation between emerging financial environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors and financial performance with mixed results. The authors use a unique data set generated by big data analytics (from web-based data mining) for three environmental areas (water, land, and air) to test hypothesis in the extreme events (defined as those that are over/under ±2.58 multiplied by the standard deviation) have a high chance of predicting equity price movements within an window of −3/+10 days, respectively, prior to and after the event. The authors repeat the similar robustness study for a sample of 2018 and the results still holds. The authors interpret these findings to suggest that: (1) studies using continuously AI-generated data for ESG categories can have significant predictive power for extreme events; and (2) that such high correlations can be used to confirm the materiality of some ESG data. The authors conclude with noting limitation of this initial study, and present specific areas for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper chronicles the evolution of the academic debate regarding diversity in management accounting research and discusses its impact on the current state of management accounting research.

Methodology/approach

We review the stream of literature over the last 40-plus years that discusses diversity in management accounting.

Findings

Anthony’s 1972 paper in Sloan Management Review makes a call to academics to adjust the trajectory of management accounting research. Our review of the literature reveals that early responses in the 1980s and 1990s to Anthony’s call primarily came from U.S. academics who suggest a broader theoretical approach and more work in the field. After 2000, non-U.S. authors and non-U.S. journals take up the call for diversity and shift the discussion to the more fundamental topic of validating and accepting various research paradigms. The U.S. academic environment fosters a narrow yet important view of management account research. To balance the U.S. view, non-U.S. academics have the liberty of using diverse theories, paradigms, and methods.

Originality/value

The results of the study indicate that the challenge to moving management accounting research forward is for diverse research approaches to be valued and published in top accounting journals that tend to be U.S. based.
