Abstract
The accuracy of severability measurements using the wetting balance depends on a number of parameters, some of which will be studied and discussed. Particular attention will be given to the influence of temperature, standard test pieces for measuring the wetting ability of fluxes, calibration of the measuring apparatus and the composition of the alloy used. Where necessary, tolerance limits will be given.

Abstract
Reaction rate curves for a complete range of rosin based fluxes, calculated from observed solderability wetting time curves on progressively more heavily oxidised copper, are presented. These are compared with the form expected on the basis of a concentration‐dependent fluxing mechanism. Either a chain reaction type or an autocatalytic type mechanism is suggested from the observations presented.

Abstract
Purpose
Presently there exists no way to directly measure strain at high temperatures in engine components such as the combustion chamber, exhaust nozzle, propellant lines, and turbine blades and shaft. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue.
Design/methodology/approach
Thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) prediction, which is a critical element for a blade design, is a strong function of the temperature and strain profiles. Major uncertainties arise from the inability of current instrumentation to measure temperature and strain at critical locations. This prevents the structural designer from optimizing the blade design for high temperature environments, which is a significantly challenging problem in engine design.
Findings
Being able to directly measure strains in different high temperature zones would deeply enhance the effectiveness of aircraft propulsion systems for fatigue damage assessment and life prediction. The state of the art for harsh environment, high temperature sensors has improved considerably over the past few years.
Originality/value
This paper lays down specifications for high temperature sensors and provides a technological assessment of these new sensing technologies. The paper also reviews recent advances made in harsh environment sensing systems and takes a peek at the future of such technologies.

The wetting balance is being used as the focal point to establish a quantitative measurement capability for solderability of electronic components of all configurations. This paper considers the factors influencing solderability measurement that arise directly from the thermal design and construction materials of the wetting balance instrument. The work is illustrated by the differences between the three commercial wetting balances currently manufactured within the European Community.

The wetting balance is used for the measurement of solderability of electronic components. The wetting force is measured dynamically and the technique gives information about both the degree and the speed of wetting. For practical quality assessment of electronic components, a simple‐to‐use index is required that incorporates the data on both degree and speed of wetting. The index must also have a uniform discrimination between different wetting properties, across the full range encountered in practical soldering. This paper reviews critically the numerous indices suggested in the literature, and supports with quantitative data the choices previously made subjectively in some soldering standards.

Abstract
Purpose
Blade tip clearance has always been a concern for the gas turbine design and control. The numerical analysis of tip clearance is based on the turbine components displacement. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the thermal and mechanical effects on a real cooling blade rather than the simplified model.
Design/methodology/approach
The coupled fluid-solid method is used. The thermal analysis involves solid and fluid domains. The distributions of blade temperature, stress and displacement have been calculated numerically under real turbine operating conditions.
Findings
Temperature contour can provide a reference for stress analysis. The results show that temperature gradient is the main source of solid stress and radial displacement. Compared with thermal or mechanical effect, there is a great change of stress magnitude for the thermomechanical effect. Large stress gradients are found between the leading and trailing edge of turbine cooling blade. Also, the blade radial displacement is mainly attributed to the thermal load rather than the centrifugal force. The analysis of the practical three-dimensional model has achieved the more precise results.
Originality/value
It is significant for clearance design and life prediction.

Abstract
The three European Community manufacturers of commercially available wetting balances for measuring the solderability of electronic components have participated in an intercomparison assessment of surfaces of standard solderability that have the potential for calibrating the balance instruments. The development of the standard surfaces, as well as the small adjustments needed to improve the uniformity of design of the different instruments, and the standardisation of the procedures for their use, have been described in the preceding papers in this series. This paper gives details of the experimental procedures used for the intercomparison and the significance of the comparative data from each balance type.

Abstract
This chapter explores expert witnessing in anthropology and the raison d’être of cultural expertise as an integrated socio-legal concept that accounts for the contribution of social sciences to the resolution of disputes and the protection of human rights. The first section of this chapter provides a short historical outline of the occurrence and reception of anthropological expertise as expert witnessing. The second section surveys the theoretical reflections on anthropologists’ engagement with law. The third section explores the potential for anthropological expertise as a broader socio-legal notion in the common law and civil law legal systems. The chapter concludes with the opportunity and raison d’être of cultural expertise grounded on a skeptical approach to culture. It suggests that expert witnessing has been viewed mainly from a technical perspective of applied social sciences, which was necessary to set the legal framework of cultural experts’ engagement with law, but had the consequence of entrenching the impossibility of a comprehensive study of anthropological expert witnessing. While this chapter adopts a skeptical approach to culture, it also argues the advantages of an interdisciplinary approach that leads to an integrated definition of cultural expertise.

Abstract
Purpose
A theater/drama perspective is used to gain insights into the participatory nature of service creation and to assess the relative importance of service elements across service scenarios.
Design/methodology/approach
Drama production principles are applied to situations where customers co‐create the service offering. Using a theater arts model, elements in service settings can be delineated into director, lead actor, set designer, scriptwriter, supporting cast member, and/or traditional audience roles. To understand the relative importance of the service provider, the customer, and other service encounter elements, three variations of a service setting (educational services) in which the consumer's participatory role moves from passive to proactive are compared.
Findings
As the service context became more participatory‐based, service provider roles significantly decreased in importance rankings while customer roles significantly increased, supporting the paper's hypotheses. The ranking of other service setting elements followed a similar pattern with greater importance being placed on elements as they became more central to the participatory experience.
Research limitations/implications
The model is tested in only one service setting and the procedure for assigning theater roles to a service setting needs further refinement.
Originality/value
By merging theories from theater and services literature, a means of assessing the relative importance of service components across service scenarios is illustrated. Principles in theater arts provide the tactical detail needed to fit service creation elements into analogous roles in a drama setting. The model provides insights on the importance of service creation elements when transitioning from a spectator‐based to a participatory‐based service environment.
