Gender inequalities and climate change are global problems that concern the whole world. These two basic questions also have intersections with each other. Disruptions in natural life, usually due to human activities, lead to climate change over time. Climate change, on the other hand, deepens the already existing gender inequalities. Problems such as water scarcity, natural disasters, lack of access to clean water, and energy shortages are gender-responsive issues that affect women and men in different ways. All these factors, as supported in the literature, cause women to be in an even more disadvantageous position against climate change. One of the policy tools of states in the face of this problem is fiscal solutions. As a fiscal policy tool, government budgets can be used to eliminate the negative effects of climate change on women. This is called gender responsive climate budgeting (GRCB) in the literature. In order to apply GRCB, firstly sex-disaggregated data are required. In addition, institutional structures should be strengthened and strategic plans should be designed in a way that establishes the link between gender and climate change. This process should be carried out in a multistakeholder manner and the resources allocated for the financing of the problems should gain a gender-responsive structure.

This chapter focuses on a case study of Kareem Exchange Company and its use of big data analysis to detect and prevent fraud and suspicious financial transactions. The chapter describes the various phases of the big data analysis cycle, including discovery, data preparation, model planning, model building, operationalization, and communicating results, and how the Kareem Exchange Company team implemented each phase. This chapter emphasizes the importance of identifying the business problem, understanding the resources and stakeholders involved, and developing an initial hypothesis to guide the analysis. The case study results demonstrate the potential of big data analysis to improve fraud detection capabilities in financial institutions, leading to informed decision making and action.

Demographic and health surveys in the Philippines have shown a rise in cohabitation among young people. This chapter aims to provide an in-depth sociological understanding of a more specific phenomenon called serial cohabitation – referring to the dissolution of current cohabitation and entering a new one, and the continuation of the cycle if the new one ends again. By developing the framework of undisplaying and re-displaying family from Janet Finch’s displaying family, this study posits that serial cohabiters experience a cycle of wanting to display an ideal family and having to undisplay every time the dissolution of the cohabiting relationship happens. This study demonstrates how serial cohabiters with children, in response to social stigma, exhibit resiliency toward stepfamily formation and committed sexual relationships. This chapter, therefore, conceptualizes “family acceptance” which refers to embracing the fluidity, reconfigurations, and “imperfections” of their newly formed family and “community acceptance” which covers the same affirmation from friends, neighbors, and extended relatives who are considered as relevant others by serial cohabiters. Family acceptance comes in three forms: first is the acceptance of/by children, second is the acceptance by the parents to the repeated stepfamily formation within their own homes, and third is the acceptance of the woman herself to the possibility that cohabitation is the “happy ever after.” This study argues that once these forms are achieved, serial cohabiters become more capable of undisplaying their previous family and displaying their new family.

This chapter offers information about the formation of the peer personality of generations, with a specific focus on the global peer personality of Generation Z as found in the Global Gen Z Study. An explanation of the study's data collection procedures, including existing validated scales used within the survey, and data analysis methods, including the use of regionally disaggregated groups from the World Values Survey (World Values Survey Association, 2022), is discussed.

Globalization, the ever-increasing worldwide flow of ideas, practices, and material objects resulting in increasing interdependency between people and nations across the globe, has numerous interrelated economic, political, cultural, ideological, environmental, and technological facets.

In an effort to make the elusive and multifaceted concept of globalization more tangible and measurable, different instruments have been developed, usually in the form of “indexes” based on quantitative data. These indexes mainly result in rankings of individual cities as well as whole countries with respect to their supposed level of globalization. Some items of the existing indexes to measure the level of globalization of nation states or cities refer to phenomena that are to some extent visually observable, but many aspects and manifestations of globalization escape these rather crude operationalizations.

Visual approaches to globalization help to enrich and complement the more abstract and mainly quantitatively supported discourses around this multifaceted phenomenon. They may provide valid and unobtrusive ways to assess and understand the impact of culture and cultural exchange in the daily lives of inhabitants of cities around the world and add a unique “localized,” cross-cultural empirical perspective to the many divergent views and discussions about the presumed beneficial or detrimental nature of these processes. An ‘in situ’ visual approach to globalization may help to uncover the “real life” impact and the specific contexts of these processes at different locations. This chapter discusses different options for researching globalization and cultural change in cities.

The relationship between employees, co-workers, and the company is crucial because it determines its success in achieving its goals. This engagement is strongly influenced by job demands and work resources at the company, affecting how employees feel about their workplace’s physical, psychological, and mental conditions. High job demands with supportive work resources can increase employee motivation and create an employee’s high commitment to the company. Digitalizing all human resources information systems will make it easier for employees to achieve their work targets, so digitalization has a role in strengthening or weakening the influence of work demands and resources on employee engagement. The concept is that existing job demands should be balanced with the availability of appropriate job resources to minimize or even eliminate psychological disturbances and improve employee health. This physically and psychologically healthy condition greatly supports the ability of employees to use digital technology in the human resources management (HRM) process.

The rites and practices of folk religion in Nigeria cut across virtually all conventional and emerging social institutions in the country. The inability of the State to perform many of its functions has encouraged this trend, with many turning to folk religion and associated practices in attempts to control uncertain situations. Unemployed/underemployed young gamblers have begun to incorporate and normalise the combination of spiritual elements with sports betting activities in a bid to translate games of uncertainty into games of certainty. This study attempts to conceptualise how and why young people adopt, practice and make sense of folk religion in relation to sports betting.

Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were used to interrogate and analyse the lived experiences of key actors living in the capital city of Ilorin, Kwara State, a place renowned for the widespread practice of folk religious rites: 20 unemployed/underemployed young sports bettors and 10 folk doctors. Collected data were transcribed manually and subjected to inductive content analysis, using grounded theory. The combination of folk religion with sports betting is fast becoming normalised as young Nigerians seek to survive harsh economic conditions. Adoption is also linked with belief in traditions, in-group conflicts, gambling adverts, lack of luck and greed. Folk religious practices combine elements from the natural and spiritual worlds. This study formulates concepts for understanding the complexity of such practices concerning gambling among young sports bettors in Nigeria.

Ọsẹ dúdú production and sale constitute a major indigenous business among the Yoruba people. Scholars have noted that the business is capable of boosting the socio-economic status of black soap entrepreneurs and of countries. However, ọsẹ dúdú enterprise has some significant threats and problems that are yet to be researched. This chapter examined the challenges of osẹ dúdú entrepreneurs in Southwest Nigeria. Twenty-six interviews were conducted among indigenous black soap producers and sellers in Ogun, Oyo and Lagos States. Data were analysed in themes. Weather, financial, spiritual, copyright and succession challenges, as well as issues such as a large number of sellers, debt, lack of support, pricing and brand competition, were found to be problems faced by black soap entrepreneurs. This chapter concluded that certain controllable and uncontrollable factors were not only capable of limiting the development of osẹ dúdú business but also have adverse implications for the achievement of the sustainable development goals through the indigenous resource. This chapter suggests that osẹ dúdú business actors such as mechanical engineers, local fabricators, financial institutions, and governmental and non-governmental agencies collaborate with black soap entrepreneurs to ameliorate the challenges of the latter. It is only through this alliance that black soap entrepreneurs can contribute to indigenous business development and the achievement of sustainable development goals in Africa.
