Abstract
Goffman (1963) provided us with an explanation of the operation of stigma in microinteractional contexts. However, his definition and explication of the experiences and processes of stigmatization predate what many consider to be the most major shift in discourse and categorization to develop in the twentieth century – the rise of the language of risk. In this chapter, I discuss the intersections of risk discourse and stigma. Drawing on my empirical research with families affected by incarceration, I illustrate the shift toward structural stigma as an exercise of power and governance. I argue that contemporary “common-sense” understandings and usage of the term stigma emphasize negative individual interactions while ignoring the ways that risk categorizations, even in seemingly benign contexts, create structural disadvantage and serve to “other” stigmatized individuals. Singular focus on stigma at the microinteractional level, particularly in destigmatization campaigns, obscures the pervasive structural stigma couched in the language of risk management that permits systematic marginalization.

Abstract
Purpose
The correctional system continues to face challenges with responding to and managing methamphetamine use among incarcerated individuals. This study aims to uncover what resources and policies could better help correctional workers deal with these challenges. The authors also examined methamphetamine’s impact on correctional work and staff well-being.
Design/methodology/approach
An online survey was distributed to correctional workers (n = 269) in Manitoba, Canada, featuring questions about their experiences related to methamphetamine use in populations under their care, what supports are needed to adequately address the concern, and the potential effects on self and their occupational responsibilities. Using NVivo software, survey responses were analysed using an emergent theme approach.
Findings
Correctional workers believed policies and protocols for managing methamphetamine use and withdrawal are currently inadequate. Correctional workers reported having monthly contact with incarcerated individuals experiencing methamphetamine withdrawal, posing safety concerns to them and other incarcerated individuals. Respondents proposed more education and training on managing incarcerated people withdrawing from methamphetamines, related to the symptoms of use and withdrawal and how to support persons detoxing. Increased human and material resources were reported as being needed (e.g. more nurses onsite and better screening devices). Respondents also desired more medical intervention, safe living spaces for methamphetamine users and programming to support addiction.
Originality/value
The current study unpacks correctional workers’ perspectives, support desires and their experiences managing methamphetamine use amongst incarcerated people. The authors discuss the required knowledge to respond to gaps in prison living, re-entry and related policy needs.

A highly significant action taken by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, reported elsewhere in this issue, could well result in important advances in surveillance and probably legislative control over enforcement of certain aspects of EEC legislation in the Member‐states. The Minister has sent an urgent request to the Commission in Brussels to dispatch inspectors to each country, including the United Kingdom, to examine and report on the standards of inspection and hygiene with detailed information on how the EEC Directive on Poultry Meat is being implemented. Information of the method of financing the cost of poultrymeat inspection in each country has ben requested. The comprehensive survey is seen as a common approach in this one field. The Minister requested that the results of the inspectors' reports should be available to him and other Member‐states.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate using scanner-based adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), artificial neural networks (ANNs) and polynomial regression methods for prediction of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and dye concentrations on AgNP-treated silk fabrics.
Design/methodology/approach
For estimation of the dye and AgNPs concentration using image processing, the silk fabrics were scanned under the condition of 200 pixels per inch. The red green blue (RGB) values of scanned images were obtained after applying the median filter. Then, the relationship between scanner RGB values and dye and AgNPs concentrations were obtained by using artificial intelligence methods such as ANFIS and ANNs.
Findings
The best result was achieved by the ANFIS system for calculation concentration of dye with 0.07% error and concentration of AgNPs with 0.008 (gr/l) error. The obtained results indicate that the performance of the ANFIS system method is better than the other methods.
Originality/value
Using a scanner-based artificial intelligence technique for prediction of nanosilver and dye content on silk fabric.

First January 1973 will not only mark the beginning of a New Year but a year which history will mark as a truly momentous one, for this is the year that Britain, after centuries of absence, re‐enters the framework of Europe as one of the Member‐States of the enlarged European Community. This in itself must make for change on both sides; Britain is so different in outlook from the others, something they too realize and see as an acquisition of strength. There have been other and more limited forms of Continental union, mainly of sovereignty and royal descent. Large regions of France were for centuries under the English Crown and long after they were finally lost, the fleur de lis stayed on the royal coat of arms, until the Treaty of Amiens 1802, when Britain retired behind her sea curtain. The other Continental union was, of course, with Hanover; from here the Germanized descendants of the Stuarts on the female line returned to the throne of their ancestors. This union lasted until 1832 when rules of descent prevented a woman from reigning in Hanover. It is interesting to speculate how different history might have been if only the British Crown and the profits of Tudor and Stuart rule had been maintained in one part of central Europe. However, Britain disentangled herself and built up overwhelming sea power against a largely hostile Europe, of which it was never conceived she could ever be a part, but the wheel of chance turns half‐circle and now, this New Year, she enters into and is bound to a European Community by the Treaty of Rome with ties far stronger, the product of new politico‐economic structures evolved from necessity; in a union which cannot fail to change the whole course of history, especially for this country.

Abstract
Nitrogen ion implantation on a Ti6Al4V alloy with 70KeV energy was carried out at different doses ranging from 5 × 1015 to 2.5 × 1017ions/cm2. The implanted samples were subjected to open circuit potential/time measurement and cyclic polarization studies to evolve the optimum dose which can give good corrosion resistance in a simulated body fluid condition. The results show that there was an increase in corrosion resistance with increased doses up to 7 × 1016ions/cm2, beyond which it started to decrease. The stability of the passive film at a higher potential was assessed by potentiotransient techniques after impressing a constant potential of 1.5V for three hours. The results of the investigation indicate that nitrogen ion implantation can be used as a viable method to improve the corrosion resistance of orthopaedic implant devices made of Ti6Al4V alloy. The nature of the stable passive film and its influence on corrosion resistance are discussed in this paper.
