Abstract

Purpose

The present research study aims to explore the impact of renewable energy (RE) on investors willing to invest. This current study also investigates the mediation role of perceived benefit (PB) and living creature’s development (LCD) among RE and investors willing to invest.

Design/methodology/approach

Pakistani per capita income level is low; usually, the population lives hand to mouth. Only 10% to 15% of the population has been saving and is willing to invest in different sectors. To meet the aim of this study, data were collected from 300 individuals with a 40% response rate investors, equity fund managers and Pakistani stock exchanges using a nonprobability convenient sampling approach. The partial least square structural equation modeling technique and Smart partial least squares 3.0 were used to determine the primary and medicating effects of the variables.

Findings

The analysis shows that RE and investor willing to invest strongly linked each other directly and indirectly. PB and LCD significantly partial mediate the connection among RE and investor willing to invest. Hence, the results suggest that RE has more sustainable development goals with using and accessing affordable green and reliable energy.

Originality/value

The present study narrows the research gap by examining the effect of RE on investor willing to invest via PB and LCD. Also, it provides essential information for effective energy policies contributed to the sustainable development goals and gives valuable suggestions for policymaker and government.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine experimentally factors affecting the satisfaction of retail stock investors with various investor protection regulatory measures implemented by the Government of India and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Also, an effort has been made to gauge the level of satisfaction of retail equities investors with the laws and guidelines developed by the Indian Government and SEBI for their invested funds.

Design/methodology/approach

To accomplish the study’s goals, a well-structured questionnaire was created with the help of a literature review, and copies of it were filled by Punjabi retail equities investors with the aid of stockbrokers, i.e. intermediaries. Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali-area intermediaries were chosen using a random selection procedure. Xerox copies of the questionnaire were given to the intermediaries, who were then asked to collect responses from their clients. Some intermediaries requested the researcher to sit in their offices to collect responses from their clients. Only 373 questionnaires out of 1,000 questionnaires that were provided had been received back. Only 328 copies were correctly filled by the equity investors. To conduct the analysis, 328 copies, which were fully completed, were used as data. The appropriate approaches, such as descriptives, factor analysis and ordinal regression analysis, were used to study the data.

Findings

With the aid of factor analysis, four factors have been identified that influence investors’ satisfaction with various investor protection regulatory measures implemented by government and SEBI regulations, including regulations addressing primary and secondary market dealings, rules for investor awareness and protection, rules to prevent company malpractices and laws for corporate governance and investor protection. The impact of these four components on investor satisfaction has been investigated using ordinal regression analysis. The pseudo-R-square statistics for the ordinal regression model demonstrated the model’s capacity for the explanation. The findings suggested that a significant amount of the overall satisfaction score about the various investor protection measures implemented by the government/SEBI has been explained by the regression model.

Research limitations/implications

A study could be conducted to analyse the perspective of various stakeholders towards the disclosures made and norms followed by corporate houses. The current study may be expanded to cover the entire nation because it is only at the state level currently. It might be conceivable to examine how investments made in the retail capital market affect investors in rural areas. The influence of reforms on the functioning of stock markets could potentially be examined through another study. It could be possible to undertake a study on female investors’ knowledge about retail investment trends. The effect of digital stock trading could be examined in India. The effect of technological innovations on capital markets can be studied.

Practical implications

This research would be extremely useful to regulators in developing policies to protect retail equities investors. Investors are required to be safeguarded and protected to deal freely in the securities market, so they should be given more freedom in terms of investor protection measures. Stock exchanges should have the potential to bring about technological advancements in trading to protect investors from any kind of financial loss. Since the government has the power to create rules and regulations to strengthen investor protection. So, this research will be extremely useful to the government.

Social implications

This work has societal ramifications. Because when adequate rules and regulations are in place to safeguard investors, they will be able to invest freely. Companies will use capital wisely and profitably. Companies should undertake tasks towards corporate social responsibility out of profits because corporate houses are part and parcel of society only.

Originality/value

Many investors may lack the necessary expertise to make sound financial judgments. They might not be aware of the entire risk-reward profile of various investment options. However, they must know various investor protection measures taken by the Government of India & Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to safeguard their interests. Investors must be well-informed on the precautions to take while dealing with market intermediaries, as well as in the stock market.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the challenges the Venture Capital (VC) funds industry in New Zealand (NZ) faces when sourcing new capital. In NZ, there is a significant gap currently for companies seeking VC funding of between $2 and $10 million to commercialise new products and ideas. Also, the estimated financing needs of the next generation of early stage NZ enterprises are around $2 billion of investment over the next 10 years (NZVIF, 2011).

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative research design is applied, given the exploratory nature of this research. In this study, 15 face-to-face semi-structured interviews with VC fund managers, investors and intermediaries were undertaken.

Findings

The findings suggest that the lack of observable proven historical returns from NZ domiciled VC funds is a significant impediment to raising new equity capital. Fund managers and intermediaries also note that there is a lack of domestic entities in NZ that have the capacity and current appetite to invest in VC. In part, this may indicate that VC investors are unwilling to invest further capital in NZ VC funds until the current funds realise their existing investments.

Originality/value

Overall our findings support recent initiatives by the NZ VC funds industry to track and monitor the performance of NZ VC funds.

The purpose of this paper is to enable tourism management and strategic management students to evaluate and analyze tourism activities in the United Arab Emirates by TCA. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of developing tourism in rural areas in the United Arab Emirates and to build up proper strategies. They will be able to perform the organization’s competitive standing using Porter’s Five competitive forces and analyze its business strategies as well. They will be able to analyze the current status of the organization using SWOT analysis and to design alternative strategies for the company using TOWS analysis.

Case overview/synopsis

The Department of Tourism and Culture – Abu Dhabi, also known as the TCA, is a governmental tourism authority in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi established 14 years ago as part of an economy-diversifying strategy for the non-oil era. The TCA is responsible of creating tourism activities to generate new tourists in Abu Dhabi, which will increase the revenue of the authority and as well increase the gross domestic product of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) economy. Tourism activities have been focused on Abu Dhabi City as is it considered the capital city of the UAE. However, other cities are also part of this strategy, e.g. Al Ain City, which is located in the eastern region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and Al Dhafra City, which is located in the western region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, both of which lack the required infrastructure, population, and tourism activity, due in part at least to the fact that the TCA’s strategy plans have been focused on Abu Dhabi City. Sultan Al Mutawa Al Dhaheri (Al Dhaheri), the TCA’s Executive Director of Tourism, has been responsible for developing tourism in Al Ain City and Al Dhafra, but due to the current situation of the two cities regarding the low revenue growth (and the consequent lack of investors willing to invest) and no critical mass (i.e. a sufficient number of hotel rooms available), Al Dhaheri is facing a dilemma regarding achieving TCA strategy in Al Ain City and Al Dhafra City.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess the relationship between cash management and fund performance in index fund portfolios.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 104 index mutual funds that track the Standard and Poor 500 stock market index from January 1999 to December 2016, the authors employ quintile portfolios and different regression models to assess the differences in risk-adjusted monthly returns experienced by index funds managing different cash levels in their portfolios. To ensure the robustness of the results, different sub-periods and market states are considered in the analyses as well as other exogenous factors and fund characteristics affecting the level of portfolio cash holdings and index fund performance.

Findings

Results show that index funds holding higher levels of cash and cash equivalents performed significantly worse than their low-cash counterparts. This evidence remains even after considering different sub-periods and bullish and bearish market conditions and controlling for fund expenses and other variables that could drive this cash-performance relationship.

Originality/value

This study expands the extant literature analyzing cash management in the mutual fund industry. More specifically, the analyses focus on index fund portfolios that replicate a specific benchmark, given that their performance differences should not be related to the market evolution but to the factors derived from the fund management and other exogenous issues. These findings are of interest to managers and investors willing to improve their risk-adjusted returns while investing as diversified as a stock market index.

Objetivo

El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la relación existente entre la gestión de efectivo y el desempeño consiguiente en las carteras de fondos de inversión indexados.

Diseño/metodología/perspectiva

Utilizando una muestra de 104 fondos que replican el índice bursátil Standard and Poor's 500 desde enero de 1999 hasta diciembre de 2016, se emplean carteras hipotéticas que invierten en fondos similares y diferentes análisis de regresión para analizar las diferencias en las rentabilidades ajustadas mensuales entre fondos indexados que gestionan diferentes niveles de efectivo en sus carteras. Por motivos de robustez, se tienen en cuenta diversos subperiodos y estados de mercado, así como otros factores exógenos y características de los fondos que afectan tanto al nivel de efectivo mantenido en la cartera indexada como al desempeño de la misma.

Resultados

Los resultados muestran que los fondos indexados que gestionan niveles de efectivo más elevados experimentan un desempeño significativamente menor que otros fondos comparables que mantienen menores porcentajes de efectivo en sus carteras de inversión. Se obtiene una evidencia similar tras considerar diferentes subperiodos y momentos alcistas y bajistas de mercado, así como al considerar los gastos propios de cada fondo y otras variables que podrían afectar esta relación entre el rendimiento y el efectivo gestionado.

Originalidad/contribución

Este estudio contribuye a la literatura existente que analiza la gestión de efectivo en la industria de fondos de inversión. Más específicamente, los análisis se centran en carteras de fondos que replican un índice bursátil específico, dado que las diferencias en sus rendimientos en este tipo de fondos no deberían originarse por la evolución del mercado, sino a causa de factores relacionados con la gestión de sus carteras y otros componentes exógenos al índice bursátil. Estos hallazgos son de interés para gestores e inversores que pretendan mejorar sus rentabilidades ajustadas al invertir mediante una estrategia tan diversificada como un índice bursátil.

Abstract

Purpose

During the last decade, there has been an increasing focus on commercialization of knowledge and technology from universities. However, universities report financing as being the main impediment to successful university spin‐off companies (USOs) creation, leaving valuable inventions un‐commercialized. The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual model in order to explain financing challenges experienced by USOs.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a conceptual model illustrating financing challenges met by USOs, and provides an explanation why TTOs report that obtaining financing is their biggest impediment to spin‐off creation. Two different theoretical perspectives back this conceptual development: Knightian uncertainty and agency theory.

Findings

This theoretical examination suggests that increasing levels of uncertainty affect the investor's willingness to fund new companies in a negative way. Through the literature review, clear indications were also found for the increased uncertainty with which USOs are faced. It is therefore natural to conclude that investors are more reluctant to invest in USOs because of the level of uncertainty compared with other entrepreneurial companies.

Research limitations/implications

This study made a generalization of USOs as a homogeneous group of companies, which is an oversimplification. Further research should address how different business models, types of resources and their institutional link affect USOs' capital requirements and their problems in raising the required capital.

Originality/value

The main contribution from this paper is the combination of theoretical insights from the concepts of Knightian uncertainty and agency theory. These combined with insights from previous empirical studies explain why USOs face specific challenges in order to raise risk capital.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and disentangle the home bias in equity crowdfunding to better understand irrational decision making of investors.

Design/methodology/approach

A first choice-based conjoint (CBC) experiment with 217 participants was conducted in central Europe in order to single out different factors contributing to an apparent home bias of capital providers.

Findings

The authors find that investors show an avoidance of foreign currency, while payment methods seem to have no considerable influence on the decision making. Furthermore, participants significantly decided against national legislation in favor for EU legislation.

Research limitations/implications

This study predominantly helps to gain deeper insights into influencing factors in crowdfunding markets with a special concern on a cross-border context. For capital-seeking companies, the home bias of potential investor has to be taken into account, when designing a crowdfunding campaign. For legislators, the apparent influence of the legal framework should serve as a wake-up call to consolidate the regulation of crowdfunding in the EU.

Originality/value

This is the first CBC experiment application in a cross-border crowdfunding context. It provides deeper understanding of the importance of geographical proximity between crowdfunding projects and investors and calls for further research to examine how such an effect could be diminished.

Abstract

This case is designed for use in JD/MBA programs or in contexts where mutual understanding of legal and financial issues is required. The case focuses on an entrepreneur in the security-software industry who is attempting to raise a first round of financing in October 2000. The firm was unsuccessful in attracting funding from venture capitalists and has relied on a small seed round and bridge loan from angel investors. The angels have now proposed investing $1.4 million in Series A convertible preferred stock. The entrepreneur must decide whether to accept the angel investors' proposal or revisit the issue of seeking venture capital. The case incorporates the Stockholder Agreement for the proposed Series A round, the capitalization of the company after the seed round, and five years of cash-flow projections for the firm. The case can be used in a law-school setting as a contract-drafting exercise and as an introduction to valuation. In a business-school setting, the case can help students understand the complex contract terms associated with a “plain-vanilla” form of venture capital. Valuation can be taught at an introductory level, or it can be made more complex if students are asked to incorporate “what-if” contract conditions into their analysis.

Expected learning outcomes: To respond to the case question, students would analyze macro- and microeconomic differences to determine HC Securities’ preferred global strategy and appropriate market entry mode. The case demonstrates how instability in a local market, in this case Egypt, can force a company to go global. It also demonstrates how two superficially similar markets, Singapore and Hong Kong, provide different opportunities for HC Securities and require different global strategies: Singapore provides a jumping-off point to its predominantly Muslim neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia, whereas Hong Kong gives access to China and could provide a new customer base of Asian investors willing to invest in Africa and the Middle East.

Case overview/synopsis

Brief overview of the case: The case introduces the Egyptian investment company HC Securities, which is facing challenges related to Egypt’s political instability and economic slowdown. HC Securities’ CEO, Mr. Choucri, feels expansion to one of the Asia-Pacific countries could help with the company’s growth and stability. He identifies Hong Kong and Singapore as the most compelling locations because of their sophisticated economies and growth potential in the investments industry.
