Abstract

Purpose

Higher education plays an essential role in achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, there are only scattered studies on monitoring how universities promote SDGs through their curriculum. The purpose of this study is to investigate the connection of existing common core courses in a university to SDG education. In particular, this study wanted to know how common core courses can be classified by machine-learning approach according to SDGs.

Design/methodology/approach

In this report, the authors used machine learning techniques to tag the 166 common core courses in a university with SDGs and then analyzed the results based on visualizations. The training data set comes from the OSDG public community data set which the community had verified. Meanwhile, key descriptions of common core courses had been used for the classification. The study used the multinomial logistic regression algorithm for the classification. Descriptive analysis at course-level, theme-level and curriculum-level had been included to illustrate the proposed approach’s functions.

Findings

The results indicate that the machine-learning classification approach can significantly accelerate the SDG classification of courses. However, currently, it cannot replace human classification due to the complexity of the problem and the lack of relevant training data.

Research limitations/implications

The study can achieve a more accurate model training through adopting advanced machine learning algorithms (e.g. deep learning, multioutput multiclass machine learning algorithms); developing a more effective test data set by extracting more relevant information from syllabus and learning materials; expanding the training data set of SDGs that currently have insufficient records (e.g. SDG 12); and replacing the existing training data set from OSDG by authentic education-related documents (such as course syllabus) with SDG classifications. The performance of the algorithm should also be compared to other computer-based and human-based SDG classification approaches for cross-checking the results, with a systematic evaluation framework. Furthermore, the study can be analyzed by circulating results to students and understanding how they would interpret and use the results for choosing courses for studying. Furthermore, the study mainly focused on the classification of topics that are taught in courses but cannot measure the effectiveness of adopted pedagogies, assessment strategies and competency development strategies in courses. The study can also conduct analysis based on assessment tasks and rubrics of courses to see whether the assessment tasks can help students understand and take action on SDGs.

Originality/value

The proposed approach explores the possibility of using machine learning for SDG classifications in scale.

Purpose

The prolonged training time of the neural network (NN) has sparked considerable debate regarding their application in the field of optimization. The purpose of this paper is to explore the beneficial assistance of NN-based alternative models in inductance design, with a particular focus on multi-objective optimization and uncertainty analysis processes.

Design/methodology/approach

Under Gaussian-distributed manufacturing errors, this study predicts error intervals for Pareto points and select robust solutions with minimal error margins. Furthermore, this study establishes correlations between manufacturing errors and inductance value discrepancies, offering a practical means of determining permissible manufacturing errors tailored to varying accuracy requirements.

Findings

The NN-assisted methods are demonstrated to offer a substantial time advantage in multi-objective optimization compared to conventional approaches, particularly in scenarios where the trained NN is repeatedly used. Also, NN models allow for extensive data-driven uncertainty quantification, which is challenging for traditional methods.

Originality/value

Three objectives including saturation current are considered in the multi-optimization, and the time advantages of the NN are thoroughly discussed by comparing scenarios involving single optimization, multiple optimizations, bi-objective optimization and tri-objective optimization. This study proposes direct error interval prediction on the Pareto front, using extensive data to predict the response of the Pareto front to random errors following a Gaussian distribution. This approach circumvents the compromises inherent in constrained robust optimization for inductance design and allows for a direct assessment of robustness that can be applied to account for manufacturing errors with complex distributions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study empirically examines the impact of climate change and agricultural research and development (R&D) as well as their interaction on agricultural productivity in 12 selected Asian and Pacific countries over the period of 1990–2018.

Design/methodology/approach

Various estimation methods for panel data, including Fixed Effects (FE), the Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) and two-step System Generalized Method of Moments (SGMM) were used.

Findings

Results show that both proxies of climate change – temperature and precipitation – have negative impacts on agricultural productivity. Notably, agricultural R&D investments not only increase agricultural productivity but also mitigate the detrimental impact of climate change proxied by temperature on agricultural productivity. Interestingly, climate change proxied by precipitation initially reduces agricultural productivity until a threshold of agricultural R&D beyond which precipitation increases agricultural productivity.

Practical implications

The findings imply useful policies to boost agricultural productivity by using R&D in the context of rising climate change in the vulnerable continent.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature in two ways. First, this study examines how climate change affects agricultural productivity in Asian and Pacific countries – those are most vulnerable to climate change. Second, this study assesses the role of R&D in improving agricultural productivity as well as its moderating effect in reducing the harmful impact of climate change on agricultural productivity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to calculate the financial inclusion index and analyze its dynamics in developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the two-stage principal component analysis (PCA) method and consider financial technology innovations to improve the accuracy of the financial inclusion index.

Findings

The authors found a downward trend in the financial inclusion index in most developing countries over the study period. The authors also found that a high financial inclusion index is linked to high scores in the Doing Business and high business climate regulation ranking. In addition, the authors observed that the rates of low financial inclusion in developing countries are due to low utilization of and unequal access to financial services.

Practical implications

The analysis suggests that policymakers in developing countries could invest in digital infrastructure to extend access to financial services in remote areas. They could also encourage financial innovation, particularly in financial technologies, by adopting flexible regulatory frameworks. Promoting the financial inclusion of marginalized groups through targeted initiatives tailored to their needs is another solution. They could also encourage the use of financial services by raising awareness and educating populations through training programs. Finally, to improve the business climate, governments could simplify administrative procedures and promote transparency and legal stability.

Originality/value

Unlike previous studies, the use of the two-stage PCA method and the consideration of financial technology (Fintech) innovations such as mobile money in the determinants of the financial inclusion index improve the accuracy of the index.
