Abstract

Purpose

Identity, positioning and possibilities intersect differently for South Asian women in white academia. Within a broader migrant community that defines Australian life, these identities and positioning imply great possibility, but pursuing such pathways within academia is a walk on the last strand of resilience. This paper explores this tension of possibilities and constraints, using hope theory to highlight the cognitive resistance evident in the narratives of three South Asian women in Australian academia.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use collaborative autoethnography to share their narratives of working in Australian universities at three different stages of careers, utilising Snyder's model of hope theory to interrogate their own goal-setting behaviours, pathways and agentic thinking.

Findings

The authors propose that hope as a cognitive state informs resistance and enables aspirations to contribute within academia in meaningful ways whilst navigating the terrain of inequitable structures.

Originality/value

The authors' use of hope theory as a lens on the intersectional experiences of career making, building and progression is a new contribution to scholarship on marginalised women in white academe and the ways in which the pathways of resistance are identified.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to argue that green hope (GH) and green organizational identification (GOI) play critical roles in transforming top management green commitment (TMGC) into desired employees task-related green behavior (TRGB) and voluntary workplace green behavior (VWGB) based on positive psychology.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors test the multilevel moderated mediation model by analyzing data collected from 491 hospitality employees and their direct supervisors in 103 teams. At Time 1, the authors conducted a survey of 905 team members to provide demographic information and evaluate TMGC, as well as their own GOI. At Time 2, the authors sent a follow-up questionnaire to employees who participated Time 1, asking them to evaluate their GH in the workplace. At Time 3, the authors sent questionnaires to the leaders of the respondents of T2 survey and invited them to evaluate TRGB and VWGB in the workplace.

Findings

The results show that TMGC facilitates two types of employees’ behaviors toward both TRGB and VWGB by enhancing hospitality employees’ GH. As a team-level variable, GOI has a positive moderating effect on the association between TMGC and GH. The authors discuss the theoretical implications as well as practical implications for managers seeking to promote sustainability in their hospitality industry.

Originality/value

This is one of the first empirical studies to investigate the mediating effects of a positive psychology variable, namely, GH – and the moderating effects of GOI on the relationship between TMGC and employee green behavior (EGB).

Abstract

Purpose

Guilt appeals are increasingly being used in road safety campaigns, despite recent research that has raised doubts about their effectiveness and the potential for triggering defensive responses. Building on the extended parallel process model, this study aims to add to this growing body of research by evaluating whether combining a hope message with guilt appeals can solve this problem.

Design/methodology/approach

An online experiment with a 2 (Appeal type: Guilt vs Guilt+hope) × 2 (Language intensity: Low vs High) between-subjects design was conducted. A total of 399 participants recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk were randomized to view one of the four advertisements discouraging texting while driving (TWD). Their affective responses, perceptions about the advertisements and intentions to not TWD were measured.

Findings

The results showed that compared to guilt-only appeals, guilt+hope appeals directly reduced defensive responses (i.e. perceived manipulative intent and anger) across varying levels of language intensity. In addition, guilt+hope appeals mitigated the negative impacts of manipulative intent on intended emotions and intentions to not TWD.

Originality/value

Findings of this study mark the first to support the idea that communicating hope within guilt appeals is a promising social marketing strategy to discourage TWD.

Abstract

Purpose

Research on leaders’ knowledge management systems focuses exclusively on how leaders gather and disseminate knowledge in collaboration with external actors. Not much is known about how leaders address the psychological aspects of employees and strategize internal communication. In addition, while previous work has treated high uncertainty as a default feature of crisis, this study aims to propose that perceived uncertainty varies in experience/meaning and has a crucial bearing on the relative balance of cognitive/emotional load on the leader and behavioral/psychological responses.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors contribute by qualitatively examining the role of leader knowledge systems in designing communication strategies in the context of the COVID-19 crisis by investigating communication characteristics, style, modes and the relatively unaddressed role of compassion/persuasion. In this pursuit, the authors interviewed 21 C-suite leaders, including chief executive officers, chief marketing officers, chief financial officers, chief human resource officers and founders, and analyzed their data using open, axial and selective coding, which were later extracted for representative themes and overarching dimensions.

Findings

Drawing from grounded theory research, the authors present a framework of knowledge systems and their resultant communication with employees in high uncertain and low uncertain crises. The authors highlight interactions of a set of concepts – leaders’ preparedness, leaders’ support to employees tailored communication adapted to perceived uncertainty, leading to enhanced trust – in the achievement of outcomes related to balancing operational and relational systems with employees. The findings suggest that a structured process of communication helps employees mitigate any concern related to uncertainty and feel confident in their leadership.

Originality/value

The research has implications for leaders in managing their knowledge systems, for human esources practitioners in designing effective internal communication programs, as well as for scholars in knowledge management, communication and leadership.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to examine the influence of psychological capital on the students' academic success in a PhD journey in Tanzania.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey design was used and data were collected through structured questionnaires from 200 PhD students in Tanzania. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the measurement model. The hypotheses were empirically tested using structural equation modeling (SEM).

Findings

The findings affirm that psychological capital in terms of hope, self-efficacy, resilience and optimism are significant predictors of students' academic success in a PhD journey.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this paper is among the first to comprehensively examine the influence of psychological capital on students' academic success in PhD studies. Previous studies have primarily focused on the undergraduate level. Additionally, this study extends the applicability of conservation of resource (COR) theory to the context of PhD students, demonstrating that psychological capital serves as a crucial resource for them to achieve success in their PhD studies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the relationship between employees’ perception of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices in Indian business organizations and psychological capital (PsyCap) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

This research design is conclusive, descriptive and cross-sectional. An online survey was conducted during COVID-19-related lockdowns in India in 2020–2021, using two standardized research instruments. Data was collected from 154 respondents; correlation and regression techniques were applied using SPSS version 25.

Findings

Results indicate that employees’ perception of CSR practices was positively correlated with the components of PsyCap, namely, employee self-efficacy, hope, resilience and optimism. Findings indicate that 57.4% of the variance in PsyCap is explained by employees’ perception of CSR.

Research limitations/implications

Studies may be carried out to examine the difference in PsyCap between organizations having strong CSR vis-à-vis weak CSR. The impact of PsyCap on organizations’ performance during states of disruption and chaos is unexamined so far; studies on the said linkage are thus required. Researchers may also examine whether there is a significant difference in organizations’ PsyCap during crisis and non-crisis conditions. Studies on the linkages between EPCSR and organizational resilience, employee performance and employee engagement during crises, with PsyCap in the moderating role will provide further insights into this area of research.

Practical implications

The findings imply that having effective CSR policies can help with the conservation and recovery of psychological resources. Employees’ enhanced self-efficacy, hope, resilience and optimism are the benefits of being a CSR-oriented organization as indicated by the study findings. Investing in CSR would therefore be a win–win situation for organizations, as besides giving back to society and building a great public image for themselves, it would also improve organizations’ PsyCap, which in turn would make businesses resilient and better able to navigate through crises.

Social implications

This study makes a case for a macro- and micro-level focus on PsyCap. Increasing organizational psychological resources makes it possible to lessen the pandemic’s negative psychological toll and enhance workers’ coping abilities. As evidenced in this study, the CSR practice of organizations is one such way toward it. It is thus in the interest of society, organizations and employees that organizations strengthen their CSR and more so during times of widespread crises.

Originality/value

Extant literature has mostly examined CSR from the macro-level lens during noncrises conditions, with a focus on external stakeholders and in the context of developed Western economies. This research has a micro-level perspective and focuses on the PsyCap of internal stakeholders, i.e. corporate employees in an emerging market, namely, India. It has been conducted in the background of an unprecedented global economic and mental crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, thus making this study very unique and relevant.

Abstract

Purpose

The researchers aim to investigate the role of psychological capital (PsyCap) in facilitating intrinsic motivation and goal-commitment among employees at the workplace, affecting outcome variables, namely, in-role and extra-role job performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 640 employees working in the information technology sector of India. Covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) was used to test the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

Analysis revealed a significant positive impact of PsyCap on the two behavioral facets of job performance. Intrinsic motivation and goal-commitment were found mediating the influence of PsyCap on the two facets of job performance.

Practical implications

The information technology sector is characterised by continuous change. It requires voluntary prosocial behavior from employees, where the employees are expected to display multifaceted job performance behaviors, where they go beyond their job duties to cater for the dynamics of the IT sector. The present study provides means by which intrinsic motivated and goal-committed behavior are facilitated for both the in-role and extra-role job performance.

Originality/value

The present study is among the few preliminary studies that have provided evidence that intrinsic motivation and goal-commitment are the two variables which aid PsyCap in predicting both the prescribed and voluntary job performance behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

While the relationship between some leadership styles and emotional intelligence has been studied, leadership practices and emotional intelligence have not been studied for an understanding of how both variables enable a leader to look for pathways to goal attainment. This study aims to examine the impact of leadership practices on pathways to goal attainment while considering the mediating effect of emotional intelligence.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was empirical with an associative strategy. The type of study was explanatory, and latent variables design was followed. The sample consists of 496 Colombian managers, obtained through a non-probability sampling (purposive sample), who work in companies located in Bogota, Colombia. For measuring the variables, three instruments were used, Leadership Practices Inventory, Adult Dispositional Hope Scale and Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale.

Findings

Results from this study suggest that the relationship between leadership practices (model the way, inspire a shared vision and enable others to act) and pathways to goal attainment is mediated by emotional intelligence. Also, leadership practices and emotional intelligence explained 45.60% of the variability of the pathways to goal attainment.

Originality/value

The effectiveness of leadership practices can be explained through the hope they have about the future by using emotional intelligence as an influencing strategy. This study aims to explain how emotional intelligence helps leaders to look for pathways to goal attainment.
