Abstract

Woven and knitted polyester fabrics were pretreated with formulations containing waterborne UV curable resins and silica particles to improve inkjet print quality. The selected formulations were applied with low add-on to reduce the adverse effect on fabric hand without sacrificing the print quality. A print pattern with block areas and lines in cyan, magenta, yellow, and black colors was designed and inkjet printed on the pretreated fabrics with a wide-format inkjet printer (Encad Novajet 750) to investigate the effects of the UV curable pretreatment on the inkjet print color qualities including color depth, color gamut and color lightness.

Experimental results show that both the color depth and gamut of prints on the pretreated taffeta and knitted polyester fabrics were enhanced compared to those on untreated polyester fabrics. However, both the color depth and gamut of the prints on the pretreated satin polyester fabrics were reduced. The lightness change of the inkjet printed colors on pretreated knitted fabrics is similar to that of untreated fabrics whereas the lightness change of prints on pretreated satin and taffeta fabrics shows some differences. All colors have increased lightness on pretreated satin fabrics. However, magenta and black have decreased lightness on the pretreated taffeta fabrics.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of Sn-Ag-x leveling layers on the mechanical properties of SnBi solder joints. Four Sn-Ag-x (Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu, Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu, Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu-0.5 Bi-0.05Ni and Sn-3.0Ag-3.0 Bi-3.0In) leveling layers were coated on Cu pads to prepare SnBi/Sn-Ag-x/Cu solder joints. The microstructure, hardness, shear strength and fracture morphology of solder joints before and after aging were studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The interfacial brittleness of the SnBi low-temperature solder joint is a key problem affecting its reliability. The purpose of this study is to improve the mechanical properties of the SnBi solder joint.

Findings

Owing to the addition of the leveling layers, the grain size of the ß-Sn phase in the SnBi/Sn-Ag-x/Cu solder joint is significantly larger than that in the SnBi/Cu eutectic solder joint. Meanwhile, the hardness of the solder bulk in the SnBi/Cu solder joint shows a decrease trend because of the addition of the leveling layers. The SnBi/Cu solder joint shows obvious strength drop and interfacial brittle fracture after aging. Through the addition of the Sn-Ag-x layers, the brittle failure caused by aging is effectively suppressed. In addition, the Sn-Ag-x leveling layers improve the shear strength of the SnBi/Cu solder joint after aging. Among them, the SnBi/SACBN/Cu solder joint shows the highest shear strength.

Originality/value

This work suppresses the interfacial brittleness of the SnBi/Cu solder joint after isothermal aging by adding Sn-Ag-x leveling layers on the Cu pads. It provides a way to improve the mechanical performances of the SnBi solder joint.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of the electronic throttle (ET) dynamics and the average speed of multiple preceding vehicles on the stability of traffic flow.

Design/methodology/approach

An extended car-following model integrating the ET dynamics and the average speed of multiple preceding vehicles is presented in this paper. The novel model’s stability conditions are obtained by using the thought of control theory, and the modified Korteweg–de Vries equation is inferred in terms of the nonlinear analysis method. In addition, some simulation experiments are implemented to explore the properties of traffic flow, and the results of these experiments confirm the correctness of theoretical analysis.

Findings

In view of the results of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, traffic flow will become more stable when the average speed and ET dynamics of multiple preceding vehicles are considered, and the stability of traffic flow will also be enhanced by increasing the number of preceding vehicles considered.

Research limitations/implications

This study leaves the factors such as the mixed traffic flow, the multilane and so on out of account in real road environment, which more or less influences the traffic flow’s stability, so the real traffic environment is not fully reflected.

Originality/value

There is little research integrating ET dynamics and the average velocity of multiple preceding vehicles to study the properties of traffic flow. The enhanced model constructed in this study can better reflect the real traffic, which can also give some theoretical reference for the development of connected and autonomous vehicles.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to consider the influence of density difference integral and relative flow difference on traffic flow, a novel two-lane lattice hydrodynamic model is proposed. The stability criterion for the new model is obtained through the linear analysis method.

Design/methodology/approach

The modified Korteweg de Vries (KdV) (mKdV) equation is derived to describe the characteristic of traffic jams near the critical point. Numerical simulations are carried out to explore how density difference integral and relative flow difference influence traffic stability. Numerical and analytical results demonstrate that traffic congestions can be effectively relieved considering density difference integral and relative flow difference.

Findings

The traffic congestions can be effectively relieved considering density difference integral and relative flow difference.

Originality/value

Novel two-lane lattice hydrodynamic model is presented considering density difference integral and relative flow difference. Applying the linear stability theory, the new model’s linear stability is obtained. Through nonlinear analysis, the mKdV equation is derived. Numerical results demonstrate that the traffic flow stability can be efficiently improved by the effect of density difference integral and relative flow difference.

Abstract

Purpose

In response to the 2008 financial crisis, the performance of the Chinese construction industry seems to be more successful, especially in total factor productivity growth (TFPG) and its contribution (TFPGC). Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate and reveal the potential successful lessons in this regard.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is conducted innovatively based on a special comparative analysis of TFPG and TFPGC between pre- and post-2008 financial crisis. Solow Residual Approach is used to measure TFPG and TFPGC for the period 2002–2016. Given that the crisis hit China at the end of 2008, the pre-2008 financial crisis period is from 2002 to 2008, and the post-2008 financial crisis period is limited to 2009–2016.

Findings

The results indicate that the industry indeed has better performance in promoting TFPG and TFPGC, TFP thus achieved significant accumulative growth before and after the crisis. However, from an evolutionary perspective, both TFPG and TFPGC presented an overall downward trend from before the crisis to after the crisis. Further, the game between the centrally planned economy and the market-oriented economy was identified and revealed as the essential reason behind the evolution of TFPG and TFPGC.

Practical implications

Some valuable lessons for policies and practices in promoting TFPG and TFPGC were summarized and learned from the Chinese experience, such as reducing administrative intervention and making the construction market play a decisive role.

Originality/value

This study provides some new empirical evidence to enrich the overall body of knowledge on growth theory, especially in promoting TFPG and TFPGC.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of the mixed traffic flow, self-stabilization effect and the lane changing behavior on traffic flow stability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of the mixed traffic flow, self-stabilization effect and the lane changing behavior on traffic flow stability.

Design/methodology/approach

An extended two-lane lattice hydrodynamic model considering mixed traffic flow and self-stabilization effect is proposed in this paper. Through linear analysis, the stability conditions of the extended model are derived. Then, the nonlinear analysis of the model is carried out by using the perturbation theory, the modified Kortweg–de Vries equation of the density of the blocking area is derived and the kink–antikink solution about the density is obtained. Furthermore, the results of theoretical analysis are verified by numerical simulation.

Findings

The results of numerical simulation show that the increase of the proportion of vehicles with larger maximum speed or larger safe headway in the mix flow are not conducive to the stability of traffic flow, while the self-stabilization effect and lane changing behavior is positive to the alleviation of traffic congestion.

Research limitations/implications

This paper does not take into account the factors such as curve and slope in the actual road environment, which will have more or less influence on the stability of traffic flow, so there is still a certain gap with the real traffic environment.

Originality/value

The existing two-lane lattice hydrodynamic models are rarely discussed in the case of mixed traffic flow. The improved model proposed in this paper can better reflect the actual traffic, which can also provide a theoretical reference for the actual traffic governance.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to explore the emotion learning experiences of some Chinese immigrants in Canadian engineering workplaces.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on life history style interviews with 14 Chinese immigrant engineers and 14 key informant interviews.

Findings

Research respondents constructed a competitive, masculine, and individualistic engineering “culture” in Canada, where the emotional and the relational, supposedly central to the Asian and Chinese culture, are largely devalued. To fit into the individualistic culture, some Chinese immigrants learned to change their patterns of socialization and some became hard‐nosed competitors. To ameliorate the deleterious effects of the alienating workplace environments, some resorted to their cultural teaching to maintain emotional health; some also tried to build collegiality and collectivity to humanize their work settings.

Research limitations/implications

The study was not a comprehensive study of the emotion work in engineering workplaces. It does not capture the emotional order that may as well exist to afford different people differential negotiation power in the engineering culture.

Social implications

The study suggests that while emotional connection and personalized relationship are “culturally” discouraged in engineering workplaces, they are of significant use value for immigrant workers and should be addressed to create humanized work environments.

Originality/value

This is one of the few articles that examine emotion learning at the intersection of gender, race and class relations.

The goal of this study is to explore the effect of two-sided lateral gap with uncertain velocity on the stability of traffic flow on a curved road.

Abstract

Purpose

The goal of this study is to explore the effect of two-sided lateral gap with uncertain velocity on the stability of traffic flow on a curved road.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, an extended car-following model considering the effect of two-sided lateral gap with uncertain velocity on a curved road is proposed. The effects of different lateral positions and radius of different sizes can be considered as control signals. The stability condition of the new model is obtained by the control theory. The numerical simulations are carried out to analyze how the control signal and lateral positions and radius of curved road affect traffic flow stability. The results show that driving between two lanes and inaccurate speed estimates both have a negative effect on traffic flow stability, and the stability also decreases with the increase in the radius of curved road.

Findings

(1) Simulation of influencing factors of vehicle lateral position indicates that if the driver drives between two lanes, it would have a negative impact on traffic flow. (2) When the speed is fixed, the traffic flow becomes more and more unstable with the increase in the radius of the curve. (3) The stability of traffic flow will be affected when the driver estimates the speed of the vehicle ahead. Therefore, whether it is manual driving or future intelligent vehicle driving, it is necessary to accurately judge the speed of the front vehicle.

Originality/value

There is little research on two-sided lateral gap with uncertain velocity for the stability of traffic flow on a curved road. The enhanced model constructed in this study can better reflect the real traffic, which can also give some theoretical reference for the development of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore how curved road and lane-changing rates affect the stability of traffic flow.

Design/methodology/approach

An extended two-lane lattice hydrodynamic model on a curved road accounting for the empirical lane-changing rate is presented. The linear analysis of the new model is discussed, the stability condition and the neutral stability condition are obtained. Also, the mKdV equation and its solution are proposed through nonlinear analysis, which discusses the stability of the extended model in the unstable region. Furthermore, the results of theoretical analysis are verified by numerical simulation.

Findings

The empirical lane-changing rate on a curved road is an important factor, which can alleviate traffic congestion.

Research limitations/implications

This paper does not take into account the factors such as slope, the drivers’ characters and so on in the actual traffic, which will have more or less influence on the stability of traffic flow, so there is still a certain gap with the real traffic environment.

Originality/value

The curved road and empirical lane-changing rate are researched simultaneously in a two-lane lattice hydrodynamic models in this paper. The improved model can better reflect the actual traffic, which can also provide a theoretical reference for the actual traffic governance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to prepare Ti(C,N) coatings on TA15 treated and not treated by shot peening using double glow plasma alloying technique. The effect of shot peening on the wear behavior of Ti(C,N) coatings is discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The Ti(C,N) coatings were prepared by double glow plasma alloying technique on two different TA15 substrate; one is shot peened and the other is not.

Findings

Ti(C,N) coating on SP-treated TA15 was thicker and denser, and the grain size was smaller compared with that on original TA15. Compared with the Ti(C,N) coating on original TA15, the wear resistance of that on SP-treated TA15 is improved. Ti(C,N) coating on SP-treated TA15 showed higher nanohardness and bearing capacity than that on original TA15.

Originality/value

For double glow plasma alloying technique, surface quality, surface activity and other factors will have influence on the thickness and density of the coating. The wear mechanisms of Ti(C,N) coating on original TA15 are serious abrasive wear and oxidation wear. However, the wear mechanism of Ti(C,N) coating on SP-treated TA15 is slightly oxidation wear.
