Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present a systematic investigation of the effect of high temperatures on transport characteristics of nitrogen-doped silicon carbide nanowire-based field-effect transistor (SiC-NWFET). The 3C-SiC nanowires can endure high-temperature environments due to their wide bandgap, high thermal conductivity and outstanding physical and chemical properties.

Design/methodology/approach

The metal-organic chemical vapor deposition process was used to synthesize in-situ nitrogen-doped SiC nanowires on SiO2/Si substrate. To fabricate the proposed SiC-NWFET device, the dielectrophoresis method was used to integrate the grown nanowires on the surface of pre-patterned electrodes onto the SiO2 layer on a highly doped Si substrate. The transport properties of the fabricated device were evaluated at various temperatures ranging from 25°C to 350°C.

Findings

The SiC-NWFET device demonstrated an increase in conductance (from 0.43 mS to 1.2 mS) after applying a temperature of 150°C, and then a decrease in conductance (from 1.2 mS to 0.3 mS) with increasing the temperature to 350°C. The increase in conductance can be attributed to the thermionic emission and tunneling mechanisms, while the decrease can be attributed to the phonon scattering. Additionally, the device revealed high electron and hole mobilities, as well as very low resistivity values at both room temperature and high temperatures.

Originality/value

High-temperature transport properties (above 300°C) of 3C-SiC nanowires have not been reported yet. The SiC-NWFET demonstrates a high transconductance, high electron and hole mobilities, very low resistivity, as well as good stability at high temperatures. Therefore, this study could offer solutions not only for high-power but also for low-power circuit and sensing applications in high-temperature environments (∼350°C).

Abstract

Iraqi universities in the aftermath of invasion in 2003 experienced extremely high levels of “post”-war violence and insecurity. The most widely known dimension of this violence is the shocking assassination campaign that killed hundreds of Iraqi academics. This paper provides an analysis of violence and insecurity in post-2003 that takes a broader optic and considers multiple forms of vulnerability to attack including insurgencies, sectarian conflict, and criminal violence. It also considers the various responses to the security dilemma taken by Coalition forces – principally counter-terrorism and stabilization efforts – and by Iraqi policy-makers and higher education communities, including security measures, politicization, ethno-sectarianization, and displacement.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of extensible business reporting language (XBRL) technology and its functionality on various aspects of financial reporting and its overall quality.

Design/methodology/approach

To conduct this study, data was collected from a variety of professionals, including accountants, auditors, tax advisors and others. A structured research instrument was developed, and the collected data were analysed using structural equation modelling and mediation analysis techniques.

Findings

The study’s results showed that XBRL technology and its functionality have a noteworthy impact on different aspects of financial reporting. Moreover, the various aspects of financial reporting positively affect the overall quality of financial reporting.

Research limitations/implications

This study solely relied on the opinions of various professionals regarding the current issue under investigation and did not empirically assess the reporting practices of companies by examining their XBRL-based reports. Additionally, it concentrated solely on financial reporting aspects and did not account for non-financial aspects. The main theoretical contributions of this paper to technology in financial reporting, XBRL and accounting literature are that it sheds light on the influence of the use of technologies in the business reporting process and their influence on various aspects of business reporting, which has only received confined focus from earlier studies so far.

Practical implications

This study’s findings could provide valuable insights to the managerial teams of organizations seeking to digitize their business reporting practices, specifically in areas such as regulatory compliance, integrated reporting and timely dissemination of reports in a sustainable way. Furthermore, it could help these teams reap the benefits of technology for various regulatory compliance matters.

Originality/value

This study could assist business organizations and regulatory authorities in adopting and implementing technology such as XBRL for accounting and business reporting. Furthermore, the study’s findings can aid in enhancing financial reporting practices by considering emerging aspects such as ESG and sustainability aspects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of social media use on both empathy and well-being through using a five-factor model (FFM) of personality in the context of Saudi Arabia.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from the 13 regions in Saudi Arabia. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to measure the reliability and validity of the study’s constructs and a structural equation modeling technique was applied to test the study hypotheses.

Findings

With a sample of 450 users, the regression results indicate a less significant relationship between personality and social media use, as well as between personality and affective empathy, while a more significant relationship between personality and cognitive empathy. Also, individuals’ well-being are influenced directly by the heavy use of social media.

Research limitations/implications

The cross-sectional design used in this research may not be able to provide the true essence of the hypothesized relationships compared to the cause-effect design. This study furthers the understanding of the role of personality on empathy and well-being in social media among Saudis from one side and provides insights to professionals for better improvement of social media and so better individuals’ well-being from the other side.

Originality/value

This paper fills an untapped gap in a developing country context by exploring the relationship between the usage of social media and the two dimensions of empathy, which, in turn, influence well-being under the theoretical lens of an FFM personality.

Abstract

Purpose

This study sought to determine the role of green human resource management (GHRM) in fostering employees' environmental performance (ENVP). This study aims to advance knowledge related to the role of firms’ GHRM activities in cultivating eco-responsible behaviors among employees, considering green innovation (GI) as a mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

For this study, data of 579 respondents were collected from employees working in the manufacturing industry in India. In all, 579 employees from the manufacturing sector in India participated in the study. The proposed model was tested using SMART PLS 3.3.

Findings

The findings of this study stated that GHRM was found significantly to predict ENVP in the Indian manufacturing industry, and GI exhibited partial mediation. This study emphasizes that GHRM activities carried out by firms encourage employees to engage in innovation to develop green products and find novel green operation processes to improve firms’ ENVP.

Research limitations/implications

As this study is limited to manufacturing organizations in India, the results of this study cannot be generalized; future studies may examine the proposed model in different contexts to generalize findings.

Originality/value

This study encourages policymakers to devise laws to enable organizations to implement GHRM practices. This study contributes to the existing literature on the environmental aspects of corporate social responsibility and environmental management. This study is one of the few attempts that seek to assess the relationship between GHRM, ENVP and GI in the Indian manufacturing industry. The contribution of this paper is significant to limit GHRM literature, as it empirically investigates the association between GHRM and ENVP.
