Abstract
Purpose
The rapid development of digital technologies drives digital entrepreneurs to pivot, a behavior that allows entrepreneurs to adjust original opportunities and explore new opportunities. This study aims to investigate the effect of the structural characteristics of digital entrepreneurial teams, the functional heterogeneity, on pivoting from the perspective of digital agility. Moreover, this study also examines the moderating effect of knowledge sharing.
Design/methodology/approach
Two-phase survey data were sourced from Chinese digital entrepreneurial teams through the entrepreneurial networks of MBA programs of a Chinese business school and entrepreneurial support organizations in China. The sample of 272 teams with 708 entrepreneurs was collected to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The functional heterogeneity of digital entrepreneurial teams, including industry background heterogeneity and occupational experience heterogeneity, positively impacts pivoting by providing heterogeneous knowledge and resources. Moreover, this relationship is mediated by the digital agility of the digital team, and knowledge sharing moderates the relationship between functional heterogeneity and digital agility.
Originality/value
While existing studies have mainly focused on the external factors, this study empirically investigates the team-level internal factors of digital pivoting in digital entrepreneurial teams, enriching the research perspective of pivoting. Moreover, the current study bridges the literature on digital agility with pivoting, broadening the theoretical mechanism of pivoting and expanding the theoretical boundaries of digital agility.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between Managerial Competence Functional Background of Top Management Teams (FBTMT), Management Control Systems (MCS), Contextual Factors of Planning System (CFPSY) and Cashflow Management Behaviour (CFMB) in the tourism sector in Uganda.
Design/methodology/approach
This is a correlational and cross-sectional study utilising a sample of 211 tourism firms (tour operator firms and hotels) and using a questionnaire to enlist responses. Data are analysed using SPSS software.
Findings
Results show significant relationships between managerial competence, functional background of top management teams, management control systems, contextual factors of planning system and cashflow management behaviour. Among the independent variables, management control systems is the best predictor of cash flow management behaviour in tourism firms. It is also a significant mediator in the link between management competence and cash flow management behaviour and that between the functional background of top management teams and cashflow management behaviour.
Research limitations/implications
Appropriate cashflow management behaviour of actors in operating, investing and financing activities of tourism firms can be improved through highly developed management competence, strong management control systems, utilisation of varied functional background of top management teams and enabling contextual factors of the planning system. The study operationally defined cash flow management behaviour as any management behaviour that is relevant to cash flow management in a firm's operating, investing and financing activities probably for the first time and this speaks to those financial statement analysts and other stakeholders wishing to infer cash flow management behaviours from the statement of cash flows.
Originality/value
As far as we are aware, no research has been done on the relationship between the cash flow management behaviour of tour operator companies and hotels in Uganda's tourism sector and the internal contingencies of managerial competence, functional background of top management teams, management control systems, and contextual factors of the planning system.

Abstract
Purpose
The authors analyze the association between the functional background of the compensation committee chair and CEO compensation. The analysis is motivated by the continuing debate about the reasonableness of executive pay patterns and the growing emphasis on the role of compensation committees.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors define three expert categories—accounting, finance, and generalist—and collect data on the compensation committee (CC) chairs of the S&P 500 firms from 2008 to 2018. The authors run an ordinary least square model and regress CEO total and cash compensation on the three expert categories.
Findings
The authors find that firms in which the CC chair has expertise in accounting, finance, and general business favor performance measures that are more aligned with accounting, finance, and general business, respectively. There is little evidence that CC chairs who are CEOs of other firms endorse more generous pay for the host CEO; the authors find some evidence that CC chairs tenure relative to the host CEO's is negatively associated with the level of the CEO's pay.
Research limitations/implications
This study suggests that firms and regulators should consider the background of the compensation committee chair to understand the variations in top executive.
Practical implications
Companies desiring to link executive compensation to particular areas of strategy must also consider matching the functional background of the compensation committee chair with the target strategy areas. From regulatory standpoint, requiring compensation committees to operate independent of inside directors can reduce attempts by inside directors to skim the process, but a failure to also consider the impact of compensation committees' discretion over the pay-setting process can distort the executives' pay-performance relation.
Originality/value
This is the first study to examine the effects of the functional background of the compensation committee chair on CEO compensation.

Abstract
Purpose
Prior research suggests a chief executive officer’s (CEO) background is highly predictive of the strategic predisposition. This paper aims to focus on the need for accuracy in the categorization of CEO background and the impact that modest, nuanced changes in coding definitions yield.
Design/methodology/approach
This study evaluates the use of biographic and demographic information of CEOs to provide a more nuanced and expansive approach to understanding the influence of legal education and experience on business strategy. Propositions as to more nuanced coding definitions are developed. Building upon Fligstein (1987), a proof-of-concept example is developed using CEO information available for 2010. That data is then reexamined using an altered method (Modified Fligstein) to discern changes in the number of CEOs contained within the background categories.
Findings
The two categorizations performed reveal that substantial differences in the number of CEOs coded into a category can come from relatively small changes in categorical definitions. In comparing the first categorization to the second, each of the vocational categories experienced a change, ranging from a decrease of 11.1% to an increase of 142.9%.
Originality/value
This study informs both theory and practice by increasing the efficacy of the use of biographic and demographic information to assess the strategic orientation of executives. It postulates and demonstrates that simple changes in the categorical definition produce significant changes and can skew empirical results that reduce the utility of prior studies.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to highlight the role of the CEO’s background in the stock market reaction to a product recall. Based on the upper echelons theory and the crisis management literature, we argue that the CEO’s background influences the expected response in a product harm crisis and the updating of investors’ expectations following a product recall announcement. We test if the CEO’s background influences the abnormal stock market returns around product recalls and how it affects the way investors interpret the recall strategy and severity.
Design/methodology/approach
We use an event study, for a sample of 2,576 product recalls in the US automobile industry, between January 2010 and June 2021.
Findings
We observe that the stock market’s reaction is less negative if the firm’s CEO presents a core specialist background and for firms led by insider CEOs. This result is in line with our argument that in the presence of a crisis that requires operational and firm-specific knowledge, such as product recalls, the best alignment in terms of the CEO’s background occurs when the CEO was recruited inside and is a core specialist. Finally, we also find that the CEO’s background has a moderating effect on the impact of the recall strategy and severity on the stock market reaction to a recall announcement. In particular, a recall with high severity has a more negative stock market reaction when the CEO is a core specialist as such an event is not expected by the market.
Practical implications
These results have important implications for practitioners and scholars working in the areas of product quality and corporate governance. Given the high frequency and high costs for firms to carry out these operations in the automobile industry, we recommend a careful analysis of the CEO’s background before their appointment as well as careful planning to prevent and to adequately react appropriately to product quality problems. While there is a common tendency among executives to cut discretionary expenditures such as spending on product safety, our results regarding the stock market reaction to product recall announcements suggest that investors expect firms led by insider and core specialist CEOs to be more likely to ensure product quality and to respond to product quality crisis.
Originality/value
We extend knowledge of product recalls by studying the role of the CEO’s background on the stock market reaction to product recall announcements.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to form propositions about the relationship between top management team (TMT) heterogeneity and peer effects in investment decision-making and explore the mediating role of social learning processes.
Design/methodology/approach
To investigate the correlations between TMT heterogeneity and investment peer effects, we considered the TMT heterogeneity category, team process and contextual factors. With a sample of 8,467 firm-year observations from Chinese listed companies, we used the mean linear model and instrumental variable method to empirically examine their relationships. To identify the mediating role of social learning processes, we introduced a social learning model to find out the contextual factors influencing corporate social learning demands from three aspects and subsequently used comparative statics analysis to explore the variations in the main effect under these contextual factors.
Findings
For task-oriented heterogeneity (e.g. functional background, education and tenure heterogeneity), the opposite effects of information elaboration and social categorization processes make it a nonlinear multiplex correlation with investment peer effects. For relation-oriented heterogeneity (e.g. age and gender heterogeneity), the sole effect of social categorization processes leads to a negative linear correlation. Further, we identify the mediating role of social learning processes. In summary, we established a connection from the TMT heterogeneity, to information elaboration theory or social categorization theory, to social learning processes and ultimately to investment peer effects.
Originality/value
The results of this study provide a comprehensive perspective to predict the decision-making outcomes of team heterogeneity and contribute to heterogeneity research and practice.

Purpose
Prior research seldom explores the different structures of marketing presence in the top management team (MPTMT) and their impact on new product performance. In this paper, we distinguish among three structures of MPTMT: (1) a dedicated MPTMT; (2) a joint marketing and sales MPTMT; and (3) a joint marketing and other operations MPTMT. We then examine how these three structures of MPTMT are related to cross-functional integration in NPD and, subsequently, new product performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Path analysis is used to test the model using data collected from 139 U.S. manufacturing firms. We conducted two rounds of survey data collection (with a one-year gap) to assess the potential effect of common method variance.
Findings
The results show that, compared with no MPTMT, all MPTMT structures positively affect cross-functional integration in NPD, which, in turn, enhances new product performance. However, joint MPTMT structures have a greater impact than a dedicated MPTMT. Our moderation analysis also reveals that as TMT heterogeneity increases, the effect of dedicated MPTMT diminishes, but the effects of the other two joint structures remain positive and stable.
Research limitations/implications
The model could include alternative mediating organizational processes and performance outcomes.
Practical implications
The findings provide managers with insight on how to configure and leverage marketing influence in the upper echelons in both SMEs and large firms.
Originality/value
The findings of this study highlight the importance of delineating MPTMT structures, understanding how they create value, and specifying their boundary conditions.

Purpose
Value creation for society from public projects requires that the overall benefits exceed the use of taxpayers' money. At the same time, cost overruns in public projects are a well-documented feature in the literature, but practical guidance on reducing the extent and magnitude of overruns is rare. In 2000, Norway introduced a governance regime that includes mandatory external quality assurance (QA) of cost estimates for major public projects. This paper compares the cost performance of public projects on each side of this QA scheme.
Design/methodology/approach
We use an original dataset covering 1,704 projects from 2000 to 2021, reported first-hand from Norwegian public agencies. We apply quantitative methods in the form of descriptive statistics, regression models, and statistical testing of hypotheses to answer our research questions.
Findings
The mean cost overrun across projects in our dataset is smaller than several previous international studies have reported. We find no statistical support for different cost performances between QA and non-QA projects. Secondly, cost overruns seem to vary between different public sectors. A third finding is a small development with lower cost overruns over time for the non-QA projects, and we raise the question of whether the QA scheme has contributed to overall learning effects. The fourth finding is that cost deviations are quite independent of project size.
Originality/value
The paper offers novel insights for decision-makers and researchers on the effects of external quality assurance on cost performance in public projects.

Purpose
Customer Experience Management (CXM) has already outgrown its infancy and must now position itself for long-term strategic success. However, the best Customer Experience Strategy (CXS) is worth little if not implemented effectively. Therefore, the present study investigated the determinants of the successful implementation of CXS and its results.
Design/methodology/approach
Key success factors were identified based on intensive desk research complemented by an exploratory qualitative study. The relevance of these determinants and the impact of successful CXS implementation were examined in a quantitative study involving 264 Customer Experience (CX) managers from several countries.
Findings
The results demonstrate the significant positive effects of the four determinants of top management support, CX-related organizational involvement, CX measurement ability, and internal use of CX data on CXS implementation success. Additionally, cross-functional working acts as a moderator. Moreover, the findings show the positive effects of successful CXS implementation on organizational customer orientation and customer relationship performance. Finally, our findings lead to essential theoretical and managerial implications.
Originality/value
While previous studies focused on CX or CXM, this study contributes to the research field by empirically testing the central determinants of successful CXS implementation and demonstrating the firm-internal (organizational customer orientation) and firm-external (customer relationship performance) effects of successful CXS implementation.

Abstract
Purpose
Using the lens of upper echelons theory, this study examines the degree to which National Collegiate Athletic Association athletic department performance outcomes are associated with the personal characteristics and experiences of the athletic director leading the organization.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors match organizational performance data with athletic director and institutional characteristics to form a robust data set spanning 16 years from the 2003–04 to 2018–19 seasons. The sample contains 811 observations representing 136 unique athletic directors. Fixed effects panel regressions are used to analyze organizational performance and quantile regression is used to analyze organizational revenues.
Findings
The authors fail to uncover statistically significant evidence that athletic director personal characteristics, functional experience and technical experience are associated with organizational performance. Rather, the empirical modeling indicates organizational performance is primarily driven by differentiation in the ability to acquire human capital (i.e. playing talent). The results also indicate that on average, women are more likely to lead lower revenue organizations, however, prior industry-specific technical experience offsets this relationship.
Originality/value
In opposition to upper echelons research in numerous settings, the modeling indicates the personal characteristics and experiences of the organization's lead executive are not an economically relevant determinant of organizational performance. This may indicate college athletics is a boundary condition in the applicability of upper echelons theory.
