Abstract

Purpose

In 2022, the International Network for Quality Assurance (QA) Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) published the new guidelines by adding three QA modules in response to the changing higher education landscape. The paper aims to investigate the transformative focus of quality assurance in higher education globally as well as Asian response to three new QA modules according to the INQAAHE ISGs.

Design/methodology/approach

The research conducted a quantitative approach for data collection. An on-line survey was conducted to perceive QA practices, perceptions toward new emerging QA modules and challenges encountered. In total, there were 26 responses from 18 territories with 22 QA agencies. A total of 13 out of them have a national qualifications framework in place.

Findings

Three are three major findings in the study. First, national policy and criteria and standards in distance education have been developed in the majority of Asian nations. Second, non-signatories of the Tokyo Convention had a higher proportion of having related policies, regulations and criteria in CBHE and distance education. Third, national policies and regulations; and lack of professional staff are two common challenges implementing QA in new types of providers.

Originality/value

The findings are of value for policymakers, QA agencies and universities to advocate the new QA model as a systematic approach in response to changing higher education landscape in the post pandemic era.

Abstract

Purpose

As the number of social media users continues to rise globally, a heated debate emerges on whether social media use improves or harms mental health, as well as the bidirectional relation between social media use and mental health. Motivated by this, the authors’ study adopts the stressor–strain–outcome model and social compensation hypothesis to disentangle the effect mechanism between social media use and psychological well-being. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

To empirically validate the proposed research model, a large-scale two-year longitudinal questionnaire survey on social media use was administered to a valid sample of 6,093 respondents recruited from a university in China. Structural equation modeling was employed for data analysis.

Findings

A longitudinal analysis reveals that social media use positively (negatively) impacts psychological well-being through the mediator of nomophobia (perceived social support) in a short period. However, social media use triggers more psychological unease, as well as more life satisfaction from a longitudinal perspective.

Originality/value

This study addresses the bidirectional relation between social media use and psychological unease. The current study also draws both theoretical and practical implications by unmasking the bright–dark duality of social media use on psychological well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how woman corporate leadership indicators and environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure in listed banks on Ghana Stock Exchange are related.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was obtained from the audited annual reports of the banks for the period 2006–2020. Empirical result estimation was achieved using Panel Corrected Standard Errors.

Findings

The result revealed that female chief executive officer (CEO), female board chairperson and board gender diversity are associated with higher disclosure of ESG issues in listed banks in Ghana in overall terms. However, in terms of individual disclosures, female board chairperson positively impacts social disclosure, whereas both female CEO and female board chairperson affect governance disclosure positively.

Research limitations/implications

In this era of business where there is much emphasis on green business and investment by various stakeholders for purposes of ensuring business legitimacy, the result implies that banks must consider females to occupy the positions of CEO and board chairperson since that can help to improve ESG performance of banks.

Practical implications

In this era of business where there is much emphasis on green business, socially responsible investment and impact investment by various stakeholders, the result implies that banks must consider improving the representation of women in leadership since that can help to improve ESG performance of banks and hence ability to attract more investors.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to provide empirical evidence from a developing country perspective in Sub-Saharan Africa that gender of bank leadership has implications for ESG disclosure.

Abstract

Purpose

Construction waste reduction (CWR) plays a vital role in achieving sustainability in construction. A good CWR practice can result in optimizing material usage, conserving natural resources, limiting environmental pollution, protecting the environment and enhancing human health. In this regard, the purpose of the current study is to identify the most relevant organizational policies that aid in waste reduction and concurrently explores the congruent measures to be adopted during the construction process in the Indian high-rise building sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The research findings were obtained through a mixed- method approach. Content analysis was used to identify waste reduction measures (variables) targeting on the two domains of construction – “waste-efficient execution” and “waste – mitigating organizational policies.” Furthermore, the authors explored and documented the key measures from the identified waste reduction measures using the constraint value of the relative importance index. As the next step, the study listed the theoretical hypothesis based on expert interviews and tested the theory through confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

The results revealed that “waste sensitive construction techniques and strategies” as the most significant category under the domain “Execution” with a path coefficient of 0.85. Concurrently, the study has also determined that “control procedures for budget, quality and resources” as the most effective organizational approach in reducing construction waste in the Indian building industry, with a path coefficient of 0.83.

Originality/value

The current research is context-sensitive to the Indian construction sector. It presents the stakeholder’s perspective on construction waste reduction and the relevant measures to be implemented to reduce construction waste in high-rise building projects in India. It can also act as a concordance for decision-makers to further focus on CWR management and aid in formulating policies suitable for the Indian context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the collaborative value creation process in the context of regional public brands within the specialty agricultural products domain. It examines the role of cluster social capital in facilitating stakeholder interactions and cooperation, thereby enhancing the value of these brands.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts a value co-creation theoretical framework to construct a relational model that links cluster social capital, brand interaction, stakeholder perceived value, and the value of regional public brands. An empirical analysis is conducted using a sample of 404 valid responses to test this model and assess the influence of cluster social capital on brand value co-creation.

Findings

The findings reveal that cluster social capital significantly impacts stakeholder participation in value co-creation activities, thereby playing a crucial role in enhancing the value of regional public brands. The study also finds that brand interactions significantly affect stakeholder perceived value and the overall brand value, with perceived value acting as a partial mediator in these relationships.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the understanding of value co-creation in regional public brands, particularly in the agricultural sector. It provides new insights into how cluster social capital influences the value creation process, offering valuable implications for policymakers and practitioners working to develop and promote regional public brands in the specialty agricultural products market.

Abstract

Purpose

There is currently a gap in the research regarding the effect of corporate culture on corporate innovation capability. Based on cultural hierarchy theory, in this paper, we explore the interactions between cultural factors and innovation capability in emerging market firms (EMFs). We discuss the mechanisms by which incentive, institutional, and vibrant corporate cultures influence corporate innovation capability. Furthermore, we consider the transformation of artificial general intelligence (AGI) from a tool into a colleague and how this affects the relationship between corporate culture and innovation capability.

Design/methodology/approach

An online questionnaire was distributed to corporate employees to explore their attitudes towards AGI and corporate culture. In total, 523 valid questionnaires were empirically analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling and multigroup analysis (MGA).

Findings

The results showed that incentive culture, institutional culture, and vibrant culture had a positive impact on corporate innovation capability. MGA revealed significant differences between employees who considered AGI a tool and those who considered it a colleague. Employees who treated AGI as a colleague were likely to be influenced by a vibrant culture, whereas employees who treated AGI as a tool were likely to be influenced by an incentive or institutional culture.

Originality/value

Building on cultural hierarchy theory, our study provides a new theoretical framework to enrich current research on the relationship between corporate culture and AGI. The study can help EMF managers adjust incentive and institutional cultures before AGI shifts from being a tool to a colleague and negatively impacts innovation capacity.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to offer valuable insights to businesses and facilitate better understanding on transformer-based models (TBMs), which are among the widely employed generative artificial intelligence (GAI) models, garnering substantial attention due to their ability to process and generate complex data.

Design/methodology/approach

Existing studies on TBMs tend to be limited in scope, either focusing on specific fields or being highly technical. To bridge this gap, this study conducts robust bibliometric analysis to explore the trends across journals, authors, affiliations, countries and research trajectories using science mapping techniques – co-citation, co-words and strategic diagram analysis.

Findings

Identified research gaps encompass the evolution of new closed and open-source TBMs; limited exploration across industries like education and disciplines like marketing; a lack of in-depth exploration on TBMs' adoption in the health sector; scarcity of research on TBMs' ethical considerations and potential TBMs' performance research in diverse applications, like image processing.

Originality/value

The study offers an updated TBMs landscape and proposes a theoretical framework for TBMs' adoption in organizations. Implications for managers and researchers along with suggested research questions to guide future investigations are provided.
