Abstract

Purpose

A critical aspect in venture capital (VC) exiting is the choice of exit mode. This study aims to predict if venture capitalists (VCs) can take the venture capital undertaking public by identifying the impact of investment attributes, market timing and macroeconomic conditions on the choice of mode of exit for VCs.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses logistic regression on a sample of 632 Indian VC-backed firms where VCs exited during the past two decades via initial public offers (IPOs) and other routes, including strategic sale, secondary sale and buyback.

Findings

Results suggest that growth stage investments, larger syndication size and a larger number of IPOs increase the probability of exiting through IPOs, whereas investments in the information technology and information technology-enabled services industry have a higher likelihood of being exited through other routes. Region and gross domestic product are found to be statistically insignificant in predicting the likelihood for a particular mode of exit.

Practical implications

The results have practical implications for VCs as knowledge regarding the influence of investment attributes, market timing and macroeconomic conditions can help them in deciding their exit strategy vis-à-vis mode of exit and can maximize their potential gains. The results also have implications for the potential investors, primarily the public at large and acquirers.

Originality/value

The determinants of VC exit options remain an unexplored area in the Indian context. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the study is the first of its kind that has used investment attributes, market timing and macroeconomic conditions to predict VC exit options in India.

Abstract

Purpose

The scope of this chapter is to present the key issues of taking the exit route from a business venture. Its aim is therefore to analyse the main strategies and suitable methods to harvest a business venture, as well as to outline the appropriate plan and the main aspects of valuation.

Methodology/approach

Literature review was conducted on issues and aspects that are related to harvesting of a business. These issues have been illustrated with an example and case studies.

Findings

This chapter highlights the fact that every mindful entrepreneur will normally have a roadmap and a plan to exit from a business venture. It provides entrepreneurs with guidance to elaborate suitable strategies and adopt appropriate methods to exit a business.

Research limitations

This chapter is explorative in nature, based on a literature review.

Managerial/practical implications

Entrepreneurs often find themselves consumed in making a business successful, while they neglect to elaborate a plan for harvesting a business venture. This chapter provides entrepreneurs with the needed guidance on how to exit a business by preparing an effective plan, in case it is not successful or for personal reasons. It also presents a set of practical advices on decision-making about related strategies and methods.

Originality/value

The chapter analyses, in a comprehensive and practical way, the reasons, methods and strategies of harvesting, as well as the elements of an effective plan to take the exit route.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a theoretical calculation for the emergency evacuation of an auditorium facility managed by a university in Saudi Arabia.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors reviewed the published literature to identify the sources of fire incidence, guidelines for means of escape in assembly occupancies and human behavior in fire emergencies. The theoretical method of the SFPE handbook to estimate the required evacuation time was subsequently applied to a case study of an auditorium facility managed by a university located in Saudi Arabia. Finally, the authors developed recommendations for the performance-based fire safety evacuation of the auditorium facility under review.

Findings

The study showed that a total of 6 minutes 39 seconds is needed to evacuate the whole auditorium. However, reviewed literature for assembly occupancies requires between 4 minutes 30 seconds and 6 minutes 24 seconds for total evacuation. Though, the calculated evacuation time is close to generally acceptable limits. It was noted that overcrowding and bottlenecks may be formed in some of the exit routes.

Originality/value

This paper will stimulate and increase research and industry concern for performance-based design of assembly-type facilities. This will be of significant value to designers, engineers, facilities managers, and owners in ensuring the safety of occupants in assembly-type facilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The existing literature on venture capitalists’ (VCs’) exits provides insufficient evidence regarding factors affecting the exit decision. This study aims to identify these factors and examine how VC firms do ranking or prioritize these factors.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on primary data. The qualitative analysis was done to develop the survey instrument. Fuzzy analytical hierarchical process, which is a popular method of multi-criteria decision modeling, is used to identify or rank the determinants of exit strategy by venture capital firms in India.

Findings

Broadly, eight determinants of exit strategy are ranked by VCs. A total of 33 statements describe these eight determinants. The results are analyzed on the basis of four measures of VCs’ profile, i.e. age of VC firm, number of start-ups in portfolios, type of investment and amount of investment.

Research limitations/implications

The survey instrument needs to be validated with a larger sample size and other financial backers than VCs.

Practical implications

The study has direct managerial implication for VC firms as it provides useful information regarding the determinants of exit strategy by VC firms in India. These findings can provide necessary information to other financial backers too, viz., angel investors, banks, non-banking financial institutions and other individual and syndicated set-ups providing funding to start-ups.

Originality/value

The current research is unique as no prior study has explored the determinants of VCs exit strategy and prioritizing these determinants.

Planning for underground spaces has become an effective way to use central areas in cities given the steady economic growth in China. The development of underground spaces in mountainous cities has satisfied the needs of the diversification of the city commercial areas and pedestrian movement. Safety issues exist because these underground spaces were originally used for civil air defense. This study was based on the underground commercial street in Chongqing, which is a typical mountainous city. Based on the results of combined fieldwork and survey, this paper summarized current safety issues, which include the not-fully-open exit, the imbalanced exit location, blocked evacuation routes, and the poor awareness of the potential safety issues. This paper proposed a framework of the safety factors for the underground space and synopsized prevention strategies that are specific to potential disasters in the underground environment. The framework comprises ensuring that the exits are fully open, the underground corridors are kept unblocked, the open space on the street is increased for disaster prevention, and equipment security is maintained and managed. At last, This paper summarized disaster prevention strategies, which include ensuring unimpeded exits, balancing the locations of the exits, avoiding blocks, increasing the disaster prevention square area in the underground space, maintaining and managing the security of the equipment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse the effect of the investment duration, the overall market condition and the industry to which the investee firm belongs on exit returns realised by venture capital (VC) firms invested in Indian market, using hierarchical regression models.

Design/methodology/approach

The study examines the relationship that exist among the variables of interest by analysing all the 210 exits that happened in the Indian VC market over the period 2004–2017 by using analytical tools such as moving averages, hierarchical regressions and pooled ordinary least squares regression.

Findings

Exit return has an approximate U-shaped relationship with investment duration, and the turning point in the convex relationship happens around seven to eight years after investment. Returns are weakly related to the market condition, discarding the market timing hypothesis. Relationship patterns are found to be generally unvarying during the time period under study.

Research limitations/implications

The results indicate VC funds in the Indian market tend to exit in a brief time span and gain substantial returns from the immediate exits beyond, which returns start dipping. This points to the illiquidity of the Indian VC market wherein the exits from “lemons” are quite tricky, which make them remain invested for longer durations and eroding the value substantially in the process. VC funds may make rational investment/exit decisions in the Indian market capitalising this knowledge.

Originality/value

This study empirically connects the value creating factors in a VC process to the established theories about the early stage investments and analyse the applicability and relevance of those theories in a market with high growth potential like India.

Purpose

The development of urban underground complexes (UUCs) has great positive significance for improving urban safety. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the key factors of the people's behavior of evacuation route selection (BERS) for fire emergencies and UUCs’ development. This study aims to find out the factors affecting people's BERS in the evacuation process of UUCs.

Design/methodology/approach

This study aims to find out the factors affecting people's BERS in the evacuation process of UUCs. To achieve this goal, the authors conducted a field experiment in F City. Furthermore, the people's BERS are obtained by using a structural equation model and compared with the field test results.

Findings

The authors found that the key factors for people's BERS are lighting conditions, route distance, flow direction guidance and indication. The results of this study contribute to the safety field by providing key factors for fire emergencies. It can also be used to improve fire safety management, evacuation strategies and assist in the development of intelligent evacuation systems.

Originality/value

The results of this study contribute to the safety field by providing key factors for fire emergencies. It can also be used to improve fire safety management, evacuation strategies and assist in the development of intelligent evacuation systems.

This chapter examines whether or not the introduction of a new $20 family premium in Kentucky's Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) program in late 2003 had a differential impact on the enrollment duration of children in different demographic groups, with a special focus on any potential differences by race or ethnicity. A competing risk hazard model is estimated in order to differentiate between children exiting CHIP via a transfer to Medicaid and children who exited public coverage completely. We find that non-white children are generally more likely to exit than white children. This general white/non-white difference increases immediately following the introduction of the $20 premium

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to provide optimization and route safety planning employing the fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) technique.

Design/methodology/approach

This research combines the use of graphical, communication tools and simulated models based on building information modeling (BIM) technology and agent-based modeling (ABM) to identify a safe evacuation route. Adopting the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach, the proposed rescue plan can reduce potential hazards along the evacuation route by selecting a safe route for evacuating residents and entering firefighters to the scene of the incident.

Findings

The results show that the use of simulated models along with MCDM methods in the selection of safe routes improves the performance of safe evacuation operations for both relief groups and residents.

Practical implications

The introduced model can improve the performance management of different groups at the time of the incident and reduce casualties and property losses using the information received from sensors at the scene. Moreover, the proposed rescue plan prevents group and individual reactivation at the time of the incident.

Originality/value

Despite many advances in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, the number of victims of fire incidents in buildings is increasing compared to other natural disasters. Improving decision management based on effective parameters at the time of incident reduces casualties of residents and rescue workers.

This paper aims to evaluate the level of compliance of fire safety with the legal requirements in Malaysia government hospital buildings by evaluating via fire risk management.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the level of compliance of fire safety with the legal requirements in Malaysia government hospital buildings by evaluating via fire risk management.

Design/methodology/approach

Five government hospitals were selected. These five hospitals were selected due to the location of Penang, which is one of the fast-growing states in Malaysia (Salleh, 2019; Ebekozien, 2019). This state is the second most densely populated state after Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, with an average distribution of 1,490 persons per square km. This higher population caused the higher demand on the health-care services by the public (DOSM, 2016). The observation and building audit processes are as described. Hundreds of photos were taken for qualitative analysis, and all fire safety elements were measured for the descriptive analysis for each hospital. The framework of audit elements is created based on the Life Safety Code: NFPA 101 (2018), UBBL 1984: Part VII (Fire Requirements) and Part VIIII (Fire Alarms, Fire Detection, Fire Extinguishment and Fire Fighting Access). The cross-sectional descriptive evaluation is conducted in the case studies building in accordance with Life Safety Code of NFPA, also known as NFPA 101. To conduct the study, the information needed to assess the fire safety status was extracted from the CFSES software based on the NFPA 101 standard and prepared and compiled by the researcher as a checklist. In the next stage, gathered information was analysed using Computerised Fire Safety Evaluation System (CFSES) software. This method was developed based on the NFPA 101 standard and evaluated the fire risk from four dimensions of containment, extinguishment, people movement and general safety. This software gives the risk assessment results in three areas of fire control, exits and general safety. To assess the fire risk of the commercial buildings after entering the background information (height, age, number of stories, etc.) in the software, the software first calculates the score that the building should obtain in the three aspects of fire control, exit routes and general safety (minimum score required).

Findings

The utmost zones in the case studies (44.3%) occupied by limited mobility are located at low-rise buildings or at the first floor to third floor of the hospital buildings. Hospitals managements lacked in creating the maximum exit route and egress the occupants to disclosed the building during evacuation, it correlates to the patients' mobility positions strategy to assign their categories that fell on effortless mobilisation. Surveyed hospitals were built with the non-combustible materials, even though four of the case studies were built before 1984. Hospitals were equipped with hazard separations and vertical smoke pores, and in most of the zones, sprinkler system is installed only in the corridors, equipped with communication system and system of communication with fire and relief organisations and has a fire detection and alarm system throughout the building. Results of fire risk assessment on four groups of elements were tested via CFSES revealed from 122 zones of surveyed hospitals; 102 or 84% of zones give the highest failed rate to comply the NFPA 101 requirements in terms of people movement in the building. The high-occupied Penang General Hospital contributed as the highest case study for not complying with the minimum requirements in all dimensions: people movement elements (41 zones), fire containment (31 zones), fire extinguisher (31 zones) and general safety (20). Fire extinguishment (62 zones) recorded the highest numbers of zones that complied with NFPA 101 (2013). The overall results of the fire risk assessment suggested that in terms of the fire control, egress and general safety aspects, the fire risk assessment score was unacceptable (failed) in all hospital buildings studied, and in the three areas mentioned, the general safety, egress/exit routes and fire control were in a worse status in terms of the score obtained in the software. None of the surveyed hospital received the minimum safety score in the three areas mentioned. The involvement of Emergency Response Team is crucial to overcome this egress or fire exit requirement and parameters.

Research limitations/implications

Several limitations exist in this research that cannot be controlled. Firstly, the occupancy rates only determined during peak hour. Accessibility into hospital compound permitted only during daytime. Secondly, the fire safety audits and fire safety risk management in this research are not being conducted by a professional architect or engineer and as a result must be relied on the direct inspection checklist to create valid results. Thirdly, this research has some limitations which need to be noted but does not affect the robustness of the study’s findings. This study focuses only on five selected public hospitals in one state of the northern region of Malaysia and excluded data gathering from all other parts of Malaysia. The perception of hospital operators regarding fire safety issues from different state hospitals may allow comparisons.

Practical implications

The findings of this paper should make a key practical contribution to the body of knowledge. In practice, the proposed framework should expand the knowledge of public hospital fire safety management plan concerning the level of fire safety compliance with the requirements in government hospital buildings and develop a fire safety management plan framework for government hospital buildings.

Social implications

This paper develops an early framework component related to the occupants’ safety which gives the basis for future research in hospital fire safety settings as it imparts early investigation into the consequence of investigating the phenomenon from the operators’ perspective as an attempt to improve public health-care fire safety performance in hospitals.

Originality/value

This paper has created a few measurement tools that can be applied among public hospital buildings stakeholders to perform the fire safety audit and risk management and rate the performance of Fire Safety Management in public hospitals.
