Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the impact of situational factors and internal psychological states on employees’ decisions to perform voluntary pro-environmental behavior. This study used a model combining the theory of planned behavior, norm activation model and comprehensive action determination model. This stud also explored the moderating role of habit (HAB) on the relationship between intention and actual voluntary pro-environmental behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through three waves of time-lagged survey questionnaires from 519 employees of public organizations in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Findings

Employees’ perceptions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) had a significant impact on intention to perform voluntary pro-environmental behavior, as did all other variables except perceived behavioral control. HABs related to pro-environmental behavior enhanced the relationship between intention and actual behavior.

Practical implications

The main factors influencing employeesvoluntary pro-environmental behavioral intentions were perceived CSR, personal moral norms, organizational citizenship behaviors toward the environment and attitude. Public organization planners, managers and practitioners can use these findings to improve their organization’s environmental performance, leveraging nonmandated actions.

Social implications

Employees can achieve a better work–life balance in organizations with flexible CSR policies and which sponsor social activities to improve public well-being and individuals’ life quality. Positive sense-making of corporate social activity helps employees develop social interactions with stakeholders, increasing their involvement in society and decreasing work stress.

Originality/value

This study sheds light on the factors influencing employeesvoluntary pro-environmental behavior. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study of its kind to combine these three models to explain the variables affecting intent to perform voluntary pro-environmental behavior in the workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

Successful stimulation of employee engagement in pro-environmental behavior (PEB) at work can reduce organizational environmental footprint and boost its green performance. The aim of this paper is to investigate the individual factors that may promote such behavior at work, offering a complex model with mediating relationships not studied before.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper data was collected through a survey of 331 bank employees from different banks in Kazakhstan and Ecuador. Structural equation modeling was used to test the relationships between the different constructs.

Findings

The results identified that environmental values and attitudes mediate the relationship between (1) personal environmental awareness and (2) environmental concern and employees' voluntary PEB at work. Harmonious environmental passion (HEP) mediates the relationship between environmental values and attitudes and employees' voluntary PEB at work.

Practical implications

This study presents important organizational policymaking implications with regard to organizational greening. The importance of environmental awareness is underlined, guiding managers to offer environmental education and training to the employees with the aim of improving environmental knowledge that may lead to employees' voluntary PEB at work. Also, managers should work on enhancing HEP.

Originality/value

Prior literature on this topic is still scarce. This research presents important contributions by discussing how individual antecedents may act as stimuli of employees' voluntary PEB at work in the context of the banking sector in two emerging countries that are often neglected by prior literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between employees’ mindfulness and pro-environmental behaviour, along with the mediating role of self-transcendent values, at the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses online data collected from 381 respondents employed in different industries across India. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to check the construct’s validity and reliability and Pearson correlation was used to examine the relationship between the variables. Moreover, the PROCESS macro of Hayes (2017) was used to examine the mediation.

Findings

Employees’ mindfulness was found to be positively associated with voluntary pro-environmental behaviour at the workplace, and the mediation analysis specifies that a self-transcendent value partially mediates this relationship.

Research limitations/implications

This study tested and extends the S-ART model and Schwartz value theory in the context of employees’ pro-environment behaviours at the workplace.

Practical implications

The results could be encouraging and helpful for top management and organizational change champions in strategizing and effective implementation of mindfulness programmes that would encourage and enhance employeesvoluntary participation in environment-friendly activities at their workplace.

Originality/value

Despite the decisive role of employees in organisations’ environmental sustainability programmes’ success, the availability of scant literature has led researchers to call for more studies. The present study is timely and could be the first to examine the role of employees’ mindfulness and self-transcendent values in influencing employees’ engagement in environmental-friendly behaviours at the workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual model based on an integrative approach to better understand voluntary pro-environmental behavior of employees.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews theoretical approaches and uses an integrative perspective to develop a model to try to understand voluntary pro-environmental behavior in the workplace.

Findings

The authors developed a conceptual model of voluntary pro-environmental behavior of employees with four main variables: attitude, perceived behavioral control, personal norms and perceived corporate social responsibility. The authors also suggest that habit may have a moderating effect, which has been neglected in previous studies.

Practical implications

Recognition of the importance of voluntary pro-environmental behavior of employees could enable organizations to develop more strategies and polices that strengthen their formal corporate social responsibility programs.

Social implications

Business owners and decision makers who are helping to promote voluntary behavior will contribute to institutions’ environmental performance, saving natural resources and promoting pro-environmental practices.

Originality/value

The proposed model will offer future studies a holistic understanding of the factors that predict voluntary pro-environmental behavior of employees and the extent to which this behavior depends on organizational motivators.

Abstract

Purpose

Environmental management researchers stress the need to study the determinants of employee pro-environmental behaviour in different cultural settings. This study focusses on employee voluntary pro-environmental behaviours in Poland. It aims (1) to examine the scope of employee green behaviours in the private and public sphere and (2) to explore the relationship between individual motivation and pro-environmental behaviours.

Design/methodology/approach

Self-administered questionnaire was used for collecting data from 325 Polish employees. A structural equation modelling was applied to estimate the effects of individual motivation on pro-environmental behaviours in both private and public sphere. The psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Motivation Toward the Environment Scale based on self-determination theory were checked beforehand.

Findings

Polish employees mainly engage in private-sphere pro-environmental behaviours. The engagement of employees in green behaviours is driven by autonomous motivation. Intrinsic motivation is a more important driver in the case of private-sphere pro-environmental behaviours; integrated regulation in the public sphere. The relationship between controlled motivation and employee pro-environmental behaviours in both spheres is unclear.

Research limitations/implications

As the data were gathered amongst Polish employees, the proposed model may be applied in culture-specific conditions in Poland.

Originality/value

This paper explores the extent to which individual motivation may foster pro-environmental behaviour of employees. Moreover, it offers the validation of the Polish version of the Motivation Toward the Environment Scale.

Abstract

Purpose

Prior research in the human resources management fields focused primarily on one type of employeespro-environmental behaviors yet failed to empirically investigate interrelationships among the distinct dimensions of their pro-environmental behaviors. To build a deeper understanding of the psychological process in becoming an environmental activist in the workplace, this study aims to examine the interrelationships among frontline employees’ green autonomous motivation, green external motivation, environmental concern, self-efficacy and three types of pro-environmental behaviors (i.e. green idea generation behavior, green idea promotion behavior and green idea activist behavior).

Design/methodology/approach

With the survey method, the data were collected from frontline employees working at hospitality enterprises in South Korea. This study analyzed the collected data, including frequency analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.

Findings

The empirical results showed that autonomous motivation significantly influenced environmental concern, self-efficacy, green idea generation behavior and green idea promotion behavior. Also, external motivation significantly affected environmental concern, self-efficacy and green idea promotion behavior. Furthermore, environmental concern had significant influences on self-efficacy and green idea promotion behavior, and self-efficacy had significant effects on green idea generation behavior and green idea promotion behavior. Finally, green idea activist behavior was significantly influenced by green idea generation behavior and green idea promotion behavior only.

Practical implications

This study proposes managerial implications to hospitality organizations and public policymakers for maximizing the effectiveness and efficiency of their green initiatives via frontline employees’ green idea activist behavior.

Originality/value

Based on the empirical findings, this study proposes several theoretical and practical implications for the extant literature and the service industry in the context of frontline employees’ three types of pro-environmental behaviors from their working motivation.

Abstract

Purpose

Limited research efforts have been undertaken despite the pivotal role of employees' voluntary behaviours in the success of organizations' environmental sustainability programs. In this context, the present study examined the association between employee's mindfulness (EM) and voluntary pro-environmental behaviour (VPEB) at the workplace, and also the mediating effect of connectedness to nature (CNS) on this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Grounded in the re-perceiving theory, a model was developed with EM as an independent variable, CNS as the mediator and employees VPEB at the workplace as the dependent variable. Based on the online responses from 421 employees working in manufacturing as well as services sectors in India, analysis was undertaken by utilizing confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson correlation and the PROCESS macro of Hayes (2017).

Findings

EM was noted to be positively influencing employee's VPEB at the workplace, and the mediation analysis indicated that CNS partially intervenes in this relationship.

Practical implications

Corporate leaders striving to achieve the organization's environmental sustainability goals could strive to build a pro-environment culture at the workplace by developing employees' mindfulness and sense of CNS. As the findings have depicted, this would positively influence employee's VPEB at the workplace which in turn will help organizations in achieving their environmental sustainability goals.

Originality/value

This study is the first to examine how EM through CNS motivates employees to engage in VPEB, especially in the organizations' context. Moreover, the re-perceiving theory of mindfulness was also extended in the organizations' environmental sustainability context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand the influence of individual and organisational factors on pro-environmental behaviours of the employees at the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

A model explaining pro-environmental behaviours at workplace has been proposed based on contemporary literature related to value-belief-norm (VBN) theory, corporate environmentalism framework and norm. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 20 manufacturing organisations in India and 383 useful individual responses were collected. The proposed model has been tested with the help of structural regression analysis.

Findings

The results of the study show that both individual characteristics as well as organisational efforts influence employeespro-environmental behaviours. However, the effect varies as per the type of behaviour. Personal norm mediates the relationship between subjective social norm and two types of pro-environmental behaviours.

Research limitations/implications

An individual faces subjective or objective constraints while exhibiting pro-environmental behaviours. The effect of subjective or the objective constraint needs to be explored in future studies.

Originality/value

To explain pro-environmental behaviours at workplace the authors tested VBN theory, as it was overlooked till date in management literature. It also contributes to the VBN literature by extending it to include organisational variables like corporate environmentalism and social psychological variable like social norm.

This chapter The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It! delves deeper into explicating Employee Green Behaviour (EGB), which outlines the eco-friendly behaviours practiced by employees. The section provides a more thorough explanation of EGB, including its origins, theoretical foundations, and practical applications in a social and physical environment to create environmentally conscious workplaces. The in-role and extra-role of EGB are discussed to strengthen its execution, and its significance considering the present ecological exigency. This chapter outlines the five-features-hierarchical framework for EGB: Sustainability Initiatives, Non-Harmful Action, Resource Conservation, Peer Influence, and Individual Commitment. The environmental history, ecosystems, and biodiversity and their interaction with humans from the ancient period to the present day are provided. The later unit explores organizational plans to encourage EGB, focussing on the role of HR policies, practices, and systems in nurturing the culture of sustainability within organizations. This chapter reviews current studies on EGB, emphasizing the role of employee engagement, transformational environmental leadership, and corporate culture in promoting green practices. Abstract

Purpose

It is evident that organizations are continuously contributing toward environmental dilapidation. This may be reduced by focusing their employees’ involvement in pro-environmental behaviors. Pro-environmental behaviors have ramifications for organizations, employees, leaders and natural environment. Therefore, this study aims at investigating environmental related social responsibility and identification as the predictors of pro-environmental behaviors through the moderating role of empathy in the hospitality sector.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected data from 201 pairs (i.e. supervisors and their subordinates) working in the hospitality sector.

Findings

The study found that employees with high empathy exhibit more pro-environmental behavior and organizational identification when perceiving their organization’s involvement in environment-related social responsibilities.

Research limitations/implications

The data for this study were collected at one point of time and it has implications for organizations and employees.

Originality/value

This study aims to fill the gap of the underlying mechanism that how perceived CSR affect employee pro-environmental behavior.
