Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present, a novel boost‐active clamp bridge single stage high‐frequency zero voltage soft‐switching‐pulse width modulation (ZVS‐PWM) inverter, which converts the utility frequency AC power into high‐frequency AC power with an embedded controller. This single stage high‐frequency inverter is composed of a single‐phase diode bridge rectifier, a non‐smoothing filter, a boost‐active clamp bridge type ZVS‐PWM high‐frequency inverter, and an induction‐heated load with planar type litz wire working coil assembly. Also, the paper discusses how to extend the soft‐switching operation ranges and improve power conversion efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed converter is simulated and it is implemented using embedded controller.

Findings

It was found that the single stage high‐frequency induction heating (IH) inverter using boosted voltage function can eliminate the DC and low‐frequency components of the working coil current and reduce the power dissipation of the circuit components and switching devices.

Originality/value

The paper shows that the PWM HF inverter is preferred for IH, since it has reduced switching losses and switching stresses. The paper can be extended to PC‐based wireless control, which can be part of a distributed control system in major industrial heating systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report a research which is conducted to examine the power of computer aided design (CAD) in achieving agility in traditional organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

The CAD model of the knob of an electronic switch was developed. This model was shown to the team of executives. The theoretical and practical knowledge provided by them were utilized to design new ten CAD models of the knob. The reactions of the executives about these new models were gathered and analyzed.

Findings

The creation of a CAD model of an existing product is found to be a useful input for evolving new models in an agile manner. It is found to be an easy task to gather the theoretical and practical knowledge for achieving design agility through the visualisation of CAD models.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is conducted on only one component manufactured by an electronic switches manufacturing organization. Although it appears to be a limitation of this paper, the nature of the design process carried out in this traditional organization mimics that of any other design practices carried out in the world. Hence, the contributions of this paper are applicable in traditional manufacturing environment.

Practical implications

Throughout the conduct of this research, the practitioners' views are gathered. Their views are favorable towards the successful usage of CAD model in achieving design agility.

Originality/value

For many years, CAD has been used for carrying out complex design projects. However, it appears that it has not been used in its simplest form to visualise and bring out new models electronically for achieving design agility. This simple approach is presented in this paper which may be used by both theorists and practitioners.

WIND tunnel testing of aircraft models can generate a multitude of transducer signal outputs which can take days to wire up to the receiving instrumentation (see fig. 1). It can take even longer to re‐wire for different tests to be performed. By using a programmable switching system, the Precision Filters 4096/4196, initial set‐up and re‐configuration can be reduced to a matter of seconds. This means significantly more up‐time for the expensive wind tunnel facility and the associated instrumentation, measuring greater throughput for the test facility.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of positive and negative bias stressing on switching performance of power VDMOSFETs used in communication systems.

Design/methodology/approach

A positive and a negative high‐field stress are applied on the gate oxide of MOS devices and electrical characterization is performed after each period of stress, a comparison is presented.

Findings

Compared results between the two types of stress show that certain doses of stress can increase the device speed. The underlying changes of the threshold voltage under these two types of stress are referred to as the variation of the gate oxide‐trapped charge and interface trap densities.

Originality/value

This paper presents new and original experiments run over a number of metal‐oxide semiconductor field effect transistor devices to compare the effects of the direction of the applied field on the degradation and the reliability of these structures.

Abstract

Purpose: Thanks to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the digital economy, digital banking has become an attractive business trend. Moreover, the spreading of the Covid-19 virus worldwide over the past two years has boosted the digitalisation of banking services. The development of digital banking is now becoming an uncontroversial issue that will attract the concern of scholars, bank managers, and policy-makers.

Methodology: As an emerging country with a young population having significant digital appliance joy, Vietnam will be a perfect case study to research the development of digital banking. Besides, digital banks, as well as the appliances of artificial intelligence (AI) in the banking sector, have appeared in Vietnam’s banking system at several different levels.

Findings: Moreover, most commercial banks in Vietnam are now in the race to complete their digital services to provide innovative digital banking services that add more value to their clients. Hence, the chapter will describe the overall picture of Vietnam’s current digital banking market.

Implications: Based on the crucial features of the operations of several digital banks and the appliances of AI in the digital banking sector in Vietnam during the chosen period, the author would like to give information on the potential of the Vietnamese digital banking market and suggest the key policies which the Vietnamese government should consider to support the digital transformation of the banking sector in Vietnam.

Abstract

The real challenge of Alaska's changing telecommunications landscape is approaching the opportunities in an orderly and logical manner. Given the exciting nature of the possibilities that new technology presents, it is all too easy to get wrapped up in what is new, instead of what is truly useful. For that reason, the main focus of the Telecommunications Information Council (TIC) in the near future will be developing and adopting a comprehensive technology plan for the state, and then examining where new technologies fit into that plan. The Knowles/Ulmer administration's first task in this effort was to reinvigorate the TIC and charge it with taking the lead in bringing Alaska back to the forefront of telecommunications technology. Our state has long had a reputation for leading the way in telecommunications. Our climate, geographic size, and location have always forced Alaskans to be innovators in technology. Supercomputers and satellites have operated in and above our state for many years, but much of that momentum was waning. That needed to change.

Abstract

The US Copyright Office has released the final report Libraries, Publishers and Photocopying, which describes in detail the volume and characteristics of photocopying and interlibrary loan in public, academic, federal and special libraries in the US. Also described are results of a survey of US publishers about their serial and book income and photocopying permission requests, as well as the results of personal interviews conducted with library users about their own photocopying done on library coin‐operated photocopying machines. The study, conducted under contract by King Research, Inc., of Rockville, Maryland, was designed to provide data as input to the US Copyright Office's five‐year review of the new US copyright law which took effect on January 1st, 1978.
