This paper aims to investigate the history and distribution of trade ceramics in Southeast Asia over a thousand-year period stretching from the ninth to the early nineteenth century CE.

The study takes a material culture approach to the writing of marketing history by researching the ceramics trade from the starting point of artifacts and their social context. It draws from literatures on Chinese and Southeast Asian ceramics art history and archaeology. It also is informed by first-hand experience inspecting surviving artifacts in shops, talking to dealers and taking in museum displays.

After a brief historical overview of the ceramics trade in Southeast Asia, the research further explores topics in physical distribution (transportation routes, hubs and local marketplaces and ships, cargo and packing) and product assortments, adaptation and globalization of consumer culture.

The art history and archaeological literatures provide a good overview of the ceramics trade and analysis of surviving material artifacts, but only limited information about distribution and consumption. Many questions remain unanswered.

This study contributes to international business and marketing history by documenting a thousand years of trade among China, mainland and insular Southeast Asia, and a long-standing cultural exchange facilitated by seaborne commerce. It also shares a marketing perspective with the fields of Southeast Asian art history and archaeology. Research in marketing history has neglected this region. To fully understand the development of marketing in the pre-industrial era, accounts from civilizations outside the West must be included.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) New Distribution Capability (NDC) standard aims at modernising the airline distribution landscape. It has supported the spread of Direct Connects by providing a common standard for linking airlines to travel agencies. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the historical development of airline distribution and to derive implications for the future.

This paper follows the approach of Yeoman and McMahon-Beattie (2017) in providing a chronological account based on published research.

Direct Connects are discussed to be a step back in the evolution of the distribution landscape because they foster disaggregation. An analysis of the history of distribution finds that a comparison of Direct Connects to the early stages of computer reservation system technology falls short to recognise the tremendous technological and market changes connected to the internet, cloud computing and the rise of low-cost carriers. Moreover, drawing on the seminal article by Anderson and Tushman (1990) on technical discontinuities and dominant designs, the current state of the distribution landscape is characterised to be an era of ferment that is driven by design competition and that might end up in a new dominant design.

The originality of this paper lies in a critical review of the turning points of distribution. By reviewing the past developments, the paper sheds light on the contribution that IATA NDC and Direct Connect technology might deliver to the field of airline distribution.

IT may prove, on due experience, that the main result of the Edinburgh Conference was the beginning of an Imperial Library Association. It has often occurred to thoughtful librarians that while we have been feeling about for contacts with libraries of other countries—and how desirable this has been everyone is aware—we have been in danger of forgetting our own household. Of course, we know that a public speaker declared recently that there was no such thing as the British Empire; but we are also aware that there is a linked series of nations speaking one tongue and, as far as libraries are concerned, having common interests. Can we bring these closer together? We hope and believe so. Our imperial colleagues might not even exist, if we judged by our library journals. This is probably because they themselves rarely send us any news of their doings. We hope that they may now be persuaded to take part in the family library counsels as well as in the political ones. Our pages, at any rate, are open to them.

Examines pollution risks in Ibadan′s (Nigeria) water distribution system. Attributes the observed reduction in water quality to urbanization pressure, age of piping, differences in pipe materials and distance from the treatment plant. The turbidity of some of the samples indicates the entry of foreign materials into the system and thus health hazards. Suggests some measures to ameliorate the situation.

The temperature distribution and history within laser sintered part cakes is an important aspect regarding the process quality and reproducibility of the polymer laser sintering process. This paper aims to an analysis of the temperature history during the build and cooling phase, which is decisive for powder ageing effects and the development of part quality characteristics.

A measurement system for three-dimensional in-process temperature measurements is set up and the influence of different parameters on the inner part cake temperature distribution and history is analyzed. In addition, position dependent temperature histories are finally correlated with powder ageing effects.

The main parameters influencing the part cake temperature history are figured out. Temperature inhomogeneities on the powder bed surface are detectable within the part cake, but only for a specific time or additional build height. Heat flux through the build frame results in different cooling rates dependent on z height. A combination of process parameters and build job layout results in individual, position-dependent temperature histories. As a consequence, completely different ageing intensities are found within one part cake.

Temperature measurements are limited to part-free powder cakes so far. To transfer the results to other boundary conditions and machine types, simulation tools have to be developed and validated.

For the first time, the inner part cake temperature distribution and history have been measured during all build phases and with a high sensor density. The results of this work help to understand the temperature history dependency of powder and part properties and can therefore be used to develop optimized process controls.

Solder joint failure history has generally been assumed to follow a straight line when plotted as a lognormal or 2‐parameter Weibull distribution. Test results presented here show that a deviation from straight‐line behaviour occurs at low percentage failure probabilities. This indicates that solder joint failure history is more correctly characterised as a 3‐parameter Weibull distribution with a failure‐free period of life for true wearout failures. The solder joint failure distribution characteristic is also affected by applied strain. Lower strain, in addition to increasing median life, also improves the distribution such that the number of cycles‐to‐first‐failure is increased compared with the median cycles‐to‐failure. The ratio of cycles‐to‐first‐failure/median cycles‐to‐failure and apparent Weibull slope increases as strain decreases in a predictable manner. The effects of part elevation, part size, solder joint volume and shape, conformal coating, temperature differential, and alternative board materials are also presented with test data showing the effect of variation of these parameters.

This paper offers a retrospective on the launch and first volumes of this journal. It describes the history of a unique period in our discipline when founding fathers in the US and UK collaborated with industry and each other to create a new field.

The authors interviewed founding editor Professor Martin Christopher and coeditor in Chief Professor Doug Lambert, conducted a bibliometric review of the first volumes of the journal and informed the analysis by approaches taken in other retrospectives published in the journal. The authors also feature historical artifacts from the journal.

The editorial focus during the early days of the journal demonstrate how the roots of the field are in cost modeling and technical work but quickly moved toward customer orientation and managerial focus. The editorial approach during the early days of the journal was on innovative research and publishing, scholarship engaged with industry, a focus on relevance and industry impact as well as leveraging research in education.

There have been retrospectives on the journals most recent volumes but what the authors aim to do is to reflect upon the launch and the first volumes of the journal. The authors expand and further detail the timeline of the development of the logistics field. In the process, the authors identify several historical roots for topics of greater focus in logistics and supply chain management in later years. The authors also find that many of the essential approaches and lessons learned in the period leading up to the launch and shortly after the launch of the journal do not only capture the early development of the discipline it also offers an approach and model for scholarship worthy of consideration still today. On top of that, several of the lessons learned in that period hold high relevance still today and they imply part of the path forward for the discipline and the journal, the authors develop questions for future research and research and editorial strategies.
