Abstract
Purpose
Customers can participate in new product development (NPD) in many ways. Drawing on the knowledge-based view (KBV) and innovation literature, this study aims to contrast two main product development activity types, i.e. problem-solving and decision-making. It proposes customers play distinct roles if they get involved in these activities, which influence NPD outcomes differently. It also explores customer need specificity as a boundary condition for the above-mentioned relationships.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors collected survey data from 308 managers in the innovation domain.
Findings
Customer involvement in problem-solving and decision-making distinctively influences new product innovativeness and development speed. Customer need specificity interacts with the two co-development types differently to impact these NPD outcomes further.
Research limitations/implications
This research extends the KBV and addresses the inconsistent findings in the literature regarding customer involvement as co-developers in innovation. It also provides novel insights into how knowledge characteristics like customer need specificity can direct co-developing activities to generate distinct NPD results.
Practical implications
This paper offers practical implications for firms on how to involve customers in developing innovative new products while managing development speed.
Originality/value
Prior research has yet to distinguish customer responsibilities related to co-development activities. This research fills this gap and offers novel insights that problem-solving and decision-making have opposite impacts on different NPD outcomes. This research demonstrates that finer knowledge about customer involvement responsibilities is needed for critical NPD outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to assess National Health Service (NHS) decision-making protocols during the pandemic, with two primary objectives: (1) to establish whether decision-making protocols changed during the pandemic and (2) to evaluate if these changes could inform future decision-making strategies beyond the pandemic. By focusing on the shift from traditional to emergency decision-making processes, this research seeks to derive actionable insights for enhancing policy and practice in crisis conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
We employ a mixed-methods approach, gathering data through an online survey targeted at senior NHS decision-makers involved in the pandemic response. Our survey collected quantitative and qualitative data to assess changes in decision-making protocols. The analysis included statistical techniques to quantify changes and thematic analysis to explore their implications, providing a detailed understanding of decision-making adaptations during the crisis and their potential future impact.
Findings
Our findings clarify the role of the NHS values and constitution, which prioritize patient welfare, dignity and equitable access to healthcare, guiding all decision-making. During the pandemic, the urgency to respond swiftly necessitated modifications to these guiding principles. Traditional processes were adapted, allowing for more rapid decision-making while still aligning with the core values, effectively balancing immediate response needs with long-term healthcare commitments.
Research limitations/implications
Our research contributes to decision-making under crisis conditions within a healthcare context and brings together a theoretical background which has accommodated the development of models and approaches that can be utilized by both service and manufacturing organizations. In addition, we have sought to bring together the importance of decision-making protocols under crisis conditions using observations from respondents who experienced decision-making at a senior level prior, during and beyond the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has assisted in the models developed in this paper. In addition, our empirical research demonstrates the importance that the values of the organization have upon decision-making and how such values need to be adjusted in the light of crisis operations.
Practical implications
Our research provides insightful observations relating to the pressures upon decision-making protocols under crisis conditions and provides senior decision-makers with an approach to realigning values to cope with unusual and highly pressurized operating environments. Notably, there is a clear requirement for decision-makers to communicate clearly to staff the need to temporarily alter the modus operandi to reflect crisis operations.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to explore decision-making in the NHS during a pandemic and to clearly demonstrate how such decision-making needs to be adapted to reflect the nature and scope of delivering a complex healthcare service under crisis conditions.

Purpose
Neurostrategy is an abductive decision-making process developed from the knowledge generated within the network of decision-makers. It links cognitive style with the team's decisional adaptability in relation to the organization's purpose. Neurostrategy differs from traditional methods, in which it addresses negative utility or decisional trauma, highlighting the variety of interests that are the main cause of team misalignment and allowing for the development of strategies to address them. Neurostrategy enables the classification of strategy deficiencies based on cohesion, coordination, communication and conduction (Co4).
Design/methodology/approach
This paper introduces a novel approach called relational neurostrategy (RNS) to elucidate the knowledge processes influencing decision-making. RNS aims to “capture” the intricate processes guiding decisions, enabling the network's decisional plasticity in both forms and contents. This adaptability is crucial for effectively addressing posed challenges, while simultaneously mitigating the impact of diverse interests. The methodology also ensures transparency in the decision-making process and generates an effective solution strategy.
Findings
The RNS addresses two critical aspects of the decision-making process. Firstly, it reduces unnecessary variety stemming from multiple interpretations and secondly, it minimizes the adverse impact of diverse interests within the decision-making network. This approach results in strong and credible decisions that reflect the collective intelligence, cooperation and collaborative efforts of the network, rather than being imposed as absolute truths.
Originality/value
The RNS stands out as a distinctive decision-making method, setting itself apart from existing approaches. Its uniqueness becomes evident in its ability to address the question “what prevents the authors from … ?” from this inquiry, RNS successfully integrates unrequired variety and negative utility. By doing so, it strategically narrows down the search field to the universe of distinctions that truly constitute the problem. This innovative process not only enhances efficiency but also fosters a high level of participation in the strategic design of potential solutions. In essence, RNS brings unprecedented value by effectively navigating the intricacies of decision-making and maximizing the relevance of the identified problem space.

Purpose
This study investigates the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities on decision-making processes and organizational performance, addressing a crucial gap in the literature by exploring the mediating role of decision-making speed and quality.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing upon resource-based theory and prior research, this study constructs a comprehensive model and hypotheses to illuminate the influence of AI capabilities within organizations on decision-making speed, decision quality, and, ultimately, organizational performance. A dataset comprising 230 responses from diverse organizations forms the basis of the analysis, with the study employing a partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) for robust data examination.
Findings
The results demonstrate the pivotal role of AI capabilities in shaping organizational decision-making processes and performance. AI capability significantly and positively affects decision-making speed, decision quality, and overall organizational performance. Notably, decision-making speed is a critical factor contributing significantly to enhanced organizational performance. The study further uncovered partial mediation effects, suggesting that decision-making processes partially mediate the relationship between AI capabilities and organizational performance through decision-making speed.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the existing body of literature by providing empirical evidence of the multifaceted impact of AI capabilities on organizational decision-making and performance. Elucidating the mediating role of decision-making processes advances our understanding of the complex mechanisms through which AI capabilities drive organizational success.

Abstract
Purpose
This study integrates insights from upper echelon (UE) theory and the attention-based view (ABV) to analyze how digital marketing innovation might enhance organizational performance in a pandemic context by addressing top management team (TMT) decision-making comprehensiveness and environmental dynamism.
Design/methodology/approach
This research utilizes a dataset collected through a questionnaire survey of 143 Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX)-listed firms operating during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Hierarchical regression analyses were used to assess the overall hypothesis.
Findings
The authors discover that innovation in digital marketing has a beneficial effect on firm performance in a pandemic setting. The authors further find that decision comprehensiveness moderates the relationship between digital marketing innovation and firm performance with accentuated benefits in stable environments.
Originality/value
This study broadens the understanding of contextual factors that influence the performance benefits of digital marketing innovation and sheds light on the role of TMT decision comprehensiveness in enhancing the impact of digital marketing innovation on firm performance. In addition, the authors developed and tested a new digital marketing innovation measure.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze the internal and external factors of the acceptance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to implemented sustainable business model innovations (SBMI) that depend on external factors, dynamic performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, social influence, effort expectancy, hedonic motivation and factor internal speed.
Design/methodology/approach
This is a quantitative method research project conducted through a survey of SMEs in Semarang, Central Java, from February to June 2021. SMEs that have been operated to sustainable business were chosen purposively as samples. Based on the requirement, there are 220 entities used in this study. Data analysis was conducted by using Structural Equation Model.
Findings
The results of this study provide empirical support that the factors studied affect the acceptance of SME business actors toward the implementation of SBMI. The application of this SBMI is used to design and implement a sustainable business model for SME businesses. This study has identified, explained and empirically supported the behavioral structures (composites and factors) that influence the adoption of SBMIs that are commonly available for business modeling.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation of this research is the static view of the structure (construction) that influences the use or application of SBMI by SME actors which often changes over time, experience and failure.
Originality/value
This study supports the execution of sustainable innovation initiatives that have yet to be investigated at the strategic, operational and tactical levels. This is especially true when beginning a firm, because entrepreneurs encounter uncertainty while putting their plans into action at one of three levels: strategic, operational or tactical.

Abstract
Purpose
Research on market information use in product innovation suggests that firms utilize two key strategic decision-making processes: incremental and comprehensive. Drawing from organizational information processing theory, literature implies that these processes operate differently. However, this assumption remains untested. Moreover, the degree to which a comprehensive process affects the innovation strategy outcomes depends on market information time sensitivity (MITS) and analyzability. To-date, no study has tested these assertions, either. Finally, it is suggested that meaningful market strategy is a key driver of new product success and it is important to understand how decision-making processes influence it under differing time sensitivity and analyzability.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on survey data from 250 Chinese firms, authors use structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The results generally support authors’ contentions. More specifically, marketing strategy outcomes are influenced by marketing strategy incrementality (MSI) and marketing strategy comprehensiveness (MSC) differently. Further, time sensitivity moderates the effect of both MSI and MSC on outcomes, except for the effect of MSI on decision quality. Finally, analyzability moderates the relationships between decision making processes and certain strategy outcomes such as between MSI and meaningfulness.
Originality/value
Drawing from information processing theory, authors argue that incremental and comprehensive marketing strategy decision making for new product operate differentially under the same conditions. Further, the effects of these decision processes on outcomes depend on time sensitivity and analyzability of market information. Finally, auhtors argue that meaningful market strategy is a driver of success. The authors find support for most of our hypotheses and provide directions for future research.

Abstract
Purpose
Previous research features the international experience of managers in the decisions regarding internationalisation speed. However, the vitality of the role a chairperson plays in shaping the internationalisation decisions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from emerging economies is intriguing. Moreover, the decision-making process and leadership context of SME internationalisation are not fully understood. Drawing upon the upper echelons decision-making theory and the cognitive perspectives of decision, this paper examines the impact of a chairperson's previous experience on the post-entry speed of internationalisation, highlighting the conditioning effects of leadership contingencies – the functional variety and power of the chairperson.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses a panel data set of Chinese SMEs active from 2010 to 2019 to test the research hypotheses. A feasible generalised least-squares estimator was applied to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The results show that the international experience of a chairperson speeds up the depth and breadth of the post-entry speed of internationalisation. However, the strength of these relationships depends on the leadership context. The chairperson's functional variety alleviates the influence of international experience, whilst the power of the chairperson reinforces its impact.
Originality/value

Abstract
Strategic decisions leaders make involving organizational changes such as mergers and acquisitions (M&A), divestitures, and downsizing, which can influence and/or interact with other organizational factors. For example, within the context of M&A, changes impact financial performance, firm behaviors, and organizational culture. In addition, strategic decisions for these types of change can also interrelate with other more intrapersonal factors, including both leaders’ and employees’ health and well-being. Employee stress, also referred to as “merger syndrome,” outlines individual negative impacts of the changes including, but not limited to, cynicism and distrust, change wariness, and burnout, all accumulating to psychological effects including increases in detachment to work, stress, and sick leave. In this chapter, the authors outline the different impacts M&A phases have on stress and well-being and how they interrelate with the strategic decisions leaders make. The authors also outline future research opportunities and practical implications for how leaders and employees could better manage future major changes such as M&A activities.

Abstract
Purpose
Managers must make numerous strategic decisions in order to initiate and implement a business model innovation (BMI). This paper examines how managers perceive the management team interacts when making BMI decisions. The paper also investigates how group biases and board members’ risk willingness affect this process.
Design/methodology/approach
Empirical data were collected through 26 in-depth interviews with German managing directors from 13 companies in four industries (mobility, manufacturing, healthcare and energy) to explore three research questions: (1) What group effects are prevalent in BMI group decision-making? (2) What are the key characteristics of BMI group decisions? And (3) what are the potential relationships between BMI group decision-making and managers' risk willingness? A thematic analysis based on Gioia's guidelines was conducted to identify themes in the comprehensive dataset.
Findings
First, the results show four typical group biases in BMI group decisions: Groupthink, social influence, hidden profile and group polarization. Findings show that the hidden profile paradigm and groupthink theory are essential in the context of BMI decisions. Second, we developed a BMI decision matrix, including the following key characteristics of BMI group decision-making managerial cohesion, conflict readiness and information- and emotion-based decision behavior. Third, in contrast to previous literature, we found that individual risk aversion can improve the quality of BMI decisions.
Practical implications
This paper provides managers with an opportunity to become aware of group biases that may impede their strategic BMI decisions. Specifically, it points out that managers should consider the key cognitive constraints due to their interactions when making BMI decisions. This work also highlights the importance of risk-averse decision-makers on boards.
Originality/value
This qualitative study contributes to the literature on decision-making by revealing key cognitive group biases in strategic decision-making. This study also enriches the behavioral science research stream of the BMI literature by attributing a critical influence on the quality of BMI decisions to managers' group interactions. In addition, this article provides new perspectives on managers' risk aversion in strategic decision-making.
