Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to understand the practice of Dawah among Muslims by discovering its perceived motives and benefits that can be replicated to organizational settings. Furthermore, the motives and benefits of performing Islamic Dawah are tied together to establish a Dawah based framework to foster ethical decision making in organizations.
Design/methodology/approach
This qualitative study is based on interviews conducted among 40 male Muslims from Pakistan. The sample consists of Muslim scholars having strong religious knowledge, younger people and old-age Muslims. The data collected through the interviews are transcribed and content-analysed by using multiple coding schemes.
Findings
The Islamic Dawah-based framework is based on five elements, which are self-reform, transcendence, complacency, dutifulness and pridefulness. The findings reveal that Muslim scholars put much emphasis on sharing of Islamic faith and livelihood among the members of the community, while the common people, both from the younger and older generations, are more concerned with establishing their own understanding of the Islamic value system and self-improvement. Aside from the spiritual impact that Dawah has on them, the role of family members in stimulating the practice of Dawah is highlighted.
Practical implications
The study has managerial relevance in a way that the highlighted themes represented by a framework can be replicated to an organizational setting to impart a culture of ethicality which is purely based on Islamic tradition. The roles of peers, CEO and self-correction are pivotal to establishment of an ethical workplace culture.
Originality/value
This study extends marketing knowledge in general and internal marketing knowledge specifically by presenting a first-ever Islamic Dawah-based model to foster workplace ethics.

Abstract
Purpose ā In order to explore how gender and sexual politics are played out in everyday practice within both the extreme right and jihadi-Salafist movements online, this chapter analyzes the content of two womenās only forums: The Womenās Forum on Stormfront.org and Women Dawah, a Turkish language pro-IS group chat on Telegram.
Methodology ā The Womenās Forum and the Women Dawah data sets were analyzed using structural topic modeling to uncover the differences and similarities in salient topics between White Nationalist and Islamic State women-only forums.
Findings ā The cross-ideological and multi-linguistic thematic analysis suggests that the safety of online spaces enables women to be more active, and serves digital support network for like-minding individuals. It also highlights that religion and ideology, whilst interwoven throughout posts on both platforms, they were more explicitly discussed within Women Dawah data.
Originality/Value ā This research uses a unique data set which was collected over one year to conduct a cross-ideological and multi-linguistic thematic analysis, a relatively uncommon approach.

The purpose of this paper is to develop and subsequently validate a Maqasid al-Shariāah-based performance evaluation model for Islamic banks.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop and subsequently validate a Maqasid al-Shariāah-based performance evaluation model for Islamic banks.
Design/methodology/approach
Initially, a comprehensive review of the existing and relevant literature is carried out and a prototype evaluation model has been developed. This has been augmented and refined through in-depth interviews of Shariāah scholars and banking experts. Afterwards, the modified model has been validated by taking inputs from academics and Islamic banking practitioners through a focus group discussion.
Findings
The major outcome of the present work is a Maqasid al-Shariāah-based performance evaluation model for Islamic banks. At the inception of the work, the Maqasid frameworks of Imam al-Ghazali and Abu Zahrah were combined. The combined model incorporates various dimensions, elements and the corresponding measures of three components, namely, justice, education and maslahah.
Research limitations/implications
Not being able to test the model statistically or empirically can be considered as a limitation.
Practical implications
The comprehensive theoretical framework of the developed model addresses all aspects of human well-being. Thus, if implemented the model will ensure welfare for all the stakeholders. It will also encourage the regulators to introduce new reporting standards which will be more reflective of Maqasid al-Shariāah.
Social implications
Fulfilling Maqasid will create a positive brand image for Islamic banks, which will attract more customers both Muslims and non-Muslims. Thus, this will create a wider scope for earning more revenues.
Originality/value
There has been concern that Islamic banks are converging towards conventional banking systems and the same performance measure instrument is being used to evaluate the performance of both Islamic and conventional banks. The present work has developed a Maqasid al-Shariāah-based performance evaluation model for Islamic banks.

Abstract
Purpose
The general concept of public space in Saudi Arabia is relatively recent; it is the result of an attempt to modernize several conservative traditions and norms, as well as the ambitious vision of 2030, which reprioritized Saudi cities' public spaces by implementing a quality-of-life improvement program. This study aims to investigate the relationship between mosque location and surrounding urban context as a significant urban design issue in order to comprehend the potential for transforming such an element into a multifunctional public space destination in a dense urban fabric.
Design/methodology/approach
The study's objectives are divided into two areas: a spatial configuration analysis to examine the urban context and an urban analysis of the mosque site with a study area boundary of a 400-m buffer zone. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies were utilized; in addition, a user feedback survey was conducted in which several key insights were compiled, such as the importance of safety urban element factors, aesthetic elements and green areas in the built environment in making mosques places that are active public spaces.
Findings
The studyās main finding encourages governmental institutions to change their mindset from āopen space around the mosqueā to āthe mosque as an element within public space,ā which will have a significant impact on how the authors approach, improve and redevelop existing mosque locations. Several concepts were presented that should be reconsidered and redeveloped in order to align with the most recent sustainable urban design tools; the mosque to be overlooked as a community gathering place rather than just a place for religious rituals.
Research limitations/implications
This study is limited to sacred mosque sites primarily found in Islamic countries; it focuses on Saudi Arabian urban and planning practices in relation to sociocultural norms. The authors believe that increasing the number of study samples or broadening the scope of the study to include other Saudi regions or other Middle Eastern countries could yield new findings and insights.
Originality/value
The study offers a conceptual design model based on survey results and qualitative analysis and recommending strategies that planners, designers and policymakers can use to design successful mosque places and pedestrian-oriented developments.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to evaluate the inhibitive action of different concentrations of Sesbania grandiflora leaf extract on the mild steel corrosion in an aggressive HCl medium under different experimental conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
Weight loss investigation, open-circuit voltage analysis, Tafel polarisation, AC impedance analysis, etc. were used for the evaluation of inhibition efficiency. The influence of immersion period on inhibition efficiency was evaluated. The mechanism of action of the inhibitor is also discussed. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis were used to characterise the passive film.
Findings
The results suggested that 10,000 ppm solution has maximum inhibition efficiency of 98.01 per cent at room temperature, while 1,000 ppm solution also exhibited a better efficiency of about 96.16 per cent. Efficiency of inhibitor solution was found to increase with an increase in its concentration. Polarisation study proposed the solution as an anodic inhibitor. Impedance study confirmed the formation of a protective layer over the surface of the specimen, and the constituents of the film were identified using IR spectroscopy. Stability of the film adsorbed on the steel was cleared from the steady open-circuit potential value. Study on action of the inhibitor under accelerated conditions revealed the fact that the efficiency of extract in preventing corrosion is good under stimulated conditions also.
Practical implications
The action of inhibitor sustains for a sufficient time period and could sustain under stimulated conditions. Hence, its application is practically possible in industries. The proposed inhibitor is widely available and is environmentally safe.
Originality/value
HCl is an industrially important chemical used for acid cleaning, acid pickling, etc. HCl was used as an aggressive corrosion environment. As the chances for mild steel to be in contact with HCl were very high, it was important to develop an efficient, economical and eco-friendly inhibitor for corrosion.

Abstract
Purpose
Governments of the developing countries must be ready to embrace the evolution of information technology. However, the growth in demand for online services and expectations for convenient access to government resources are placing governments under pressure to deliver outstanding e-services. Despite the successful attempts of the Saudi Government to deliver e-government services, the literature still needs to be advanced with evidence to demonstrate the current status of government websites. Additionally, the growth of e-government services should be periodically monitored and evaluated.
Design/methodology/approach
This study aims to revisit e-government websites previously surveyed (2006-2012) in Saudi Arabia and examine growth based on the five-stage maturity model. This study supports the approach with a review of the United Nations data and links this assessment with the five-stage maturity model.
Findings
The results revealed remarkable improvements in the maturity level of online services provided by the government websites of Saudi Arabia.
Practical implications
The relationship between e-government use and investment decisions appears to be bidirectional, as greater levels of investment seem to offer more opportunities for service improvement.
Originality/value
The outcomes are expected to assist executive authorities in understanding the current situation of e-government and plan appropriate strategic suggestions and development.
