Abstract

Purpose

Citation data needs to be recognised as a part of the Commons – those works that are freely and legally available for sharing – and placed in an open repository. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The Open Citation Corpus is a new open repository of scholarly citation data, made available under a Creative Commons CC0 1.0 public domain dedication and encoded as Open Linked Data using the SPAR Ontologies.

Findings

The Open Citation Corpus presently provides open access (OA) to reference lists from 204,637 articles from the OA Subset of PubMed Central, containing 6,325,178 individual references to 3,373,961 unique papers.

Originality/value

Scholars, publishers and institutions may freely build upon, enhance and reuse the open citation data for any purpose, without restriction under copyright or database law.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness of the potential of open bibliometrics, especially for the discovery of previously undiscovered public knowledge.

Design/methodology/approach

The viewpoint considers the limitations of the most popular current bibliometric tools and the possibilities offered from more open tools. It is supported by analysis of the openness of keywords associated with bibliometric studies in 2016.

Findings

The paper finds that although tools are emerging that offer more open bibliometrics, bibliometric research nonetheless continues to make use of restricted services.

Originality/value

This viewpoint on the potential of open bibliometrics is supported by an analysis of the current openness of bibliometric keywords.

Abstract

This paper reports the findings of 89 focus groups and 18 individual interviews (involving 391 older people in 6 European countries) that were held to explore how older people view human dignity in their lives. Participants were all aged over 60 years and 25% were aged 80+ years. They were from a range of educational, social and economic backgrounds. 72% were women and 17% were living in residential or nursing homes. There was substantial agreement about the meaning and experience of dignity in older people's everyday lives. It was seen as a highly relevant and important concept, enhancing self‐esteem, self‐worth and well‐being. Three major themes were identified: respect and recognition; participation and involvement; and dignity in care. The theoretical model of human dignity developed in the project was reflected in many of the findings from the empirical data. Of particular importance and relevance was the notion of ‘dignity of personal identity’, not least because it is perhaps most vulnerable to the actions of others. Menschenwurde (expressed as the innate dignity of human beings) was also important. For dignity of older people to be enhanced, communication issues, privacy, personal identity and feelings of vulnerability need to be addressed. Education of all professionals should pay attention to practices that enhance or detract from the experience of dignity. Policies and standards need to go beyond the merely mechanistic and easily quantifiable, to identify meaningful qualitative indicators of dignity in care.

Abstract

An example is provided of the various partnerships with education developed by one organisation and the wide variety of facilities which can be offered, embracing all sectors \em\ primary, secondary and higher education. In addition links are maintained with professional institutions such as the Institute of Metals and the Engineering Institutions. A bursary scheme for senior staff in schools and colleges is in operation, involving a period of preparation in a British Steel plant as well as attendance on the four‐week management course at the steel industry′s management college at Ashorne Hill and an attachment to a works to study a specific management problem affecting education.

Abstract

After going through the worst of the periodic post‐war depressions, prospects for the British steel industry at last begin to gleam, with current output showing a marked improvement on last year's figures. But optimism is clouded by friction between the Government and BSC over price levels—regarded by the Corporation as still too low—and scale of future development. Report by Roger Eglin of the Observer.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine how managers in financial institutions satisfy themselves of the effectiveness of risk mitigation strategy and management control. It studies the co-opting of accounting tools within a single financial institution case study, examining the recursive and emergent characteristics of risk management practice.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting a field study approach within the strategy-as-practice perspective, the paper provides insights into the role of actor perceptions of risk and accounting as a calculative practice in the adaptive enactment of risk strategy.

Findings

Results highlight the interactions between risk management strategy, management controls and actor interests at Lehman Brothers. The actions and reactions of risk management decision-makers such as Executive Committee and Board members are examined to better understand the role of accounting and leadership.

Research limitations/implications

Results of this study may not be generalised beyond this single case study.

Practical implications

The paper emphasises that concern for the social relations and the performative interests of actors in a risk management network needs to be understood and considered in accounting research. It is argued that the market prices of tradable financial asset will continue to be opaque without these insights.

Originality/value

This study explores an under-researched topic in the accounting literature in examining how management controls are affected by and, in turn, affect risk strategising.

Abstract

When this article was first under consideration, my immediate reaction was that a cautious, objective, and historical approach was probably the style which would flow most appropriately from the pen of a recently‐appointed Chairman. On reflection, however, I saw this as the recipe for a thoroughly boring piece—of the type one sometimes comes across in business supplements and surveys—comprising unexciting ingredients prepared in an unimaginative and unappetizing manner. So I decided that my own impressions of NEBSS on taking up office would at least make lighter reading; first impressions are not always accurate but they are mostly sharp, since one's vision is not yet blurred by too many facts and opinions.
