Abstract

Purpose

This research investigates the critical role of data governance (DG) in shaping a data-driven culture (DDC) within organizations, recognizing the transformative potential of data utilization for efficiency, opportunities, and productivity. The study delves into the influence of DG on DDC, emphasizing the mediating effect of data literacy (DL).

Design/methodology/approach

The study empirically assesses 125 experienced managers in Indonesian public service sector organizations using a quantitative approach. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis was chosen to examine the impact of DG on DDC and the mediating effects of DL on this relationship.

Findings

The findings highlight that both DG and DL serve as antecedents to DDC, with DL identified as a crucial mediator, explaining a significant portion of the effects between DG and DDC.

Research limitations/implications

Beyond unveiling these relationships, the study discusses practical implications for organizational leaders and managers, emphasizing the need for effective policies and strategies in data-driven decision-making.

Originality/value

This research fills an important research gap by introducing an original model and providing empirical evidence on the dynamic interplay between DG, DL, and DDC, contributing to the evolving landscape of data-driven organizational cultures.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to estimate the value of semi-automated subject indexing in operative library catalogues, the study aimed to investigate five different automated implementations of an open source software package on a large set of Swedish union catalogue metadata records, with Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as the target classification system. It also aimed to contribute to the body of research on aboutness and related challenges in automated subject indexing and evaluation.

Design/methodology/approach

On a sample of over 230,000 records with close to 12,000 distinct DDC classes, an open source tool Annif, developed by the National Library of Finland, was applied in the following implementations: lexical algorithm, support vector classifier, fastText, Omikuji Bonsai and an ensemble approach combing the former four. A qualitative study involving two senior catalogue librarians and three students of library and information studies was also conducted to investigate the value and inter-rater agreement of automatically assigned classes, on a sample of 60 records.

Findings

The best results were achieved using the ensemble approach that achieved 66.82% accuracy on the three-digit DDC classification task. The qualitative study confirmed earlier studies reporting low inter-rater agreement but also pointed to the potential value of automatically assigned classes as additional access points in information retrieval.

Originality/value

The paper presents an extensive study of automated classification in an operative library catalogue, accompanied by a qualitative study of automated classes. It demonstrates the value of applying semi-automated indexing in operative information retrieval systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic represents one of the most significant disruptions to supply chains (SCs), stimulating both practitioners and scholars to seek ways to enhance supply chain performance (SCP). Recent advancements in technology, particularly supply chain analytics (SCA) technologies, offer promising avenues for mitigating risks associated with SC disruptions like those posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the existing literature lacks a comprehensive analysis of the connection between SCA and healthcare SC (HSC) performance. To address this research gap, we employed the dynamic capability perspective to investigate the mediating roles of supply chain innovation (SCI), resilience (SCR) and flexibility (SCF) in the relationship between SCA and HSC performance. The study further examined the moderating role of a data-driven culture (DDC).

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model was tested using survey data from 374 managers of healthcare facilities in Ghana. SPSS and Amos were used to analyze the data gathered.

Findings

The results showed that while SCA may drive HSC performance, the presence of SCI, SCR and SCF may serve as channels to drive enhanced HSC performance. Additionally, we also found that different levels of a DDC induce varying effects of SCA on SCI, SCR and SCF.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s results have theoretical and practical implications, offering valuable insights for the advancement of SCA in healthcare literature. They also deepen SC managers’ comprehension of how and when SCA can boost HSC performance. However, as the study was limited to healthcare facilities in Ghana, its findings may not be universally applicable.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that SCI, SCR, SCF and a DDC could serve as transformative mechanisms to reap superior HSC outcomes. This study also offers contemporary guidance to managers regarding SCA investment decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on social capital theory, this study aims to explore the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on organizational resilience. The research investigates the mediating role of relationship quality in the association of CSR with organizational resilience, and the moderating role of data-driven culture in the association between CSR and relationship quality.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from Chinese agricultural firms with a sample of 241 senior or middle executives and structural equation modeling was used to test the research model and hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicate that CSR positively affects the relationship quality between agribusinesses and farmers, which in turn positively affects both proactive resilience and reactive resilience. Relationship quality has a partial mediating role in the association of CSR with proactive resilience and reactive resilience. Data-driven culture has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between CSR and relationship quality.

Originality/value

By arguing for CSR toward organizational resilience and analyzing its underlying mechanism, this study enriches the literature on CSR and organizational resilience and expands the existing knowledge on the roles of relationship quality and data-driven culture. This study also provides practical insights into how to improve organizational resilience.

Abstract

Purpose

Supply chain management has become critical in today’s globalized environment, with growingly intense competition on the international level. The particular characteristics of modern trade have led companies to globalize and devise increasingly sophisticated supply chains to meet customer demand worldwide. Motivated by the need to address these challenges, we have developed a new model for a global supply chain that incorporates uncertainties in exchange rates, demand fluctuations, and the quantity of produce.

Design/methodology/approach

The objective of the proposed model is to maximize supply chain profitability. Our model optimizes several critical decisions in the proposed global supply chain, including the location of domestic and foreign distribution centers, allocating the centers to customers, transportation mode selection, storage temperature, optimal farm purchase quantities, product flows across the network, and the shelf-life of products. Scenario-based stochastic programming approach is employed to account for the inherent uncertainties within the model. A pistachio supply chain is examined as a case study in this article, and the efficiency of the proposed model is demonstrated through computational results.

Findings

The model was solved using the CPLEX solver in GAMS and the results, the Sirjan DDC and Turkey FDC have been selected. In general, 40% of demand for customers from FDC (turkey) and 60% of demand from DDC (sirjan) is provided. Changes in the demand of foreign customers make the net profit more effective than changes in the demand for domestic customers. The decrease in exchange rate decreases the network profit with a higher slope and the increase in exchange rate will increase network profit with a relatively stable slope.

Originality/value

While research on GSCs for perishable products has been ongoing for several years, the importance of the subject necessitates continued investigation in this area. This paper aimed to address this gap by presenting an optimization model for designing GSCs for perishable products under uncertainty and with various transportation modes. The proposed model was designed with the aim of improving supply chain performance and real-world applicability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to conceptualize, define and measure resource orchestration capabilities of R&D teams pursuing advanced scientific research and technological innovation at public-funded R&D organizations in India.

Design/methodology/approach

A series of five mutually exclusive studies were designed over two years to develop and validate the ROCI scale within public research and development (R&D) organizations pursuing advanced scientific research and technological development in India. The first three studies address the refinement, reduction and rationalization of items for measuring the ROCI construct. The next study explores the factor structure underlying the ROCI construct whereas the subsequent one confirms the three-factor structure within empirical settings.

Findings

The resource orchestration capability towards innovation (ROCI) construct reflected through three sub-dimensions namely – adaptive structuring capability (ASC), synergistic leveraging capability (SLC) and decentralized decision-making capability (DDC), each loaded with their respective items can be used for capability measurement in public-funded R&D organizations.

Practical implications

R&D managers can use this ROCI scale to measure, monitor and improve the innovation-oriented resource orchestration capabilities of their R&D teams and help them improve their innovation performance.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the extant literature on resource orchestration for innovation management in three unique and original ways – theoretically-grounded conceptualization, empirical measurement and rigorous validation through multiple studies conducted in public-funded R&D organizations in India.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review an existing graphic novel collection in the curriculum materials center of an academic library. The review would result in a clear identity for the collection and guide the creation of revised collection development, management and cataloging processes.

Design/methodology/approach

The physical and bibliographic identities of each individual graphic novel were reviewed and compared with collection development tools.

Findings

The review revealed a mismatch between the physical and bibliographic markers applied to some graphic novels and inconsistencies in the assignment of items based on audience and literature type. At the completion of the project, 43% of the graphic novels were reassigned based on audience, literature type or both.

Originality/value

There is limited research about the collection challenges and needs of graphic novels in juvenile and curriculum materials collections within academic libraries. This research details the process used to evaluate the collection and create a physical and bibliographic identity that fits the needs of the library’s users.

Abstract

Purpose

The handicraft sector is unorganized with huge potential for the economic upliftment of the bottom of the pyramid (BOP) craft producers. To ensure the sustainable livelihood of the artisans living in BOP, it is essential to identify the hurdles being faced by them so that they can be worked upon. This paper aims to look at the existing handicraft value chain in an integrated way to identify these hurdles and suggest probable solutions to mitigate them.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-stage study involving quantitative and qualitative approaches is used. Empirical observations from 218 artisans were analyzed using the relative to an identified distribution to rank the different variables affecting the functioning of the handicraft value chain. Next, 17 handicraft entrepreneurs were interviewed to identify solutions for the hurdles.

Findings

A two-stage study examining the perspectives of artisans and handicraft entrepreneurs identified five significant challenges affecting the handicraft sector and viable solutions to address them. While presenting an operational model, a comprehensive picture of the handicraft business ecosystem was studied, from the procurement of raw materials to the marketing and sale of finished products. This can assist handicraft producers in sustaining their livelihoods and expanding the industry.

Originality/value

Studies on the handicraft value chain at BOP are rare, and none have tried to look at the sector holistically to find solutions and propose an operational framework. The study has captured the voices of the artisans and handicraft entrepreneurs and, through a mixed-method approach, identified the main pain points of the BOP artisans to arrive at a workable solution for better business outcomes.

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in automating library cataloging and classification processes, exploring current applications, challenges and future possibilities. It aims to provide insights into how AI technologies are reshaping traditional library practices and their implications for the future of information organization and access.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a comprehensive review, analyzing recent research and developments in AI applications for library cataloging and classification. It covers traditional methods, relevant AI technologies, implementation challenges, impacts on library workflows and future directions.

Findings

AI technologies, particularly machine learning and natural language processing, offer significant potential for enhancing efficiency, consistency and depth in metadata creation and classification. However, implementation challenges include data quality issues, integration with legacy systems and the need for new skill sets among library professionals. The impact on library workflows is profound, necessitating a reimagining of traditional librarian responsibilities. Future developments promise more advanced capabilities in personalized discovery, adaptive classification schemes and predictive collection development.

Originality/value

This paper provides a holistic overview of AI’s impact on library cataloging and classification, synthesizing current research and future trends. It highlights the delicate balance required in leveraging AI to enhance library services while upholding core library values. The paper emphasizes the need for ongoing critical engagement with these technologies to shape the future of library services in the AI era.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate how stock markets responded to corporate dividend policy changes during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Likewise, it explores how efficiently market prices incorporate the news by examining the speed of stock price adjustment to various dividend announcements.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample includes 741 dividend announcements from 2017 to 2021 made by 326 firms listed in the stock markets of the GCC countries. A series of regression analyses examine how dividend announcements influence the market reaction during the COVID-19 pandemic, controlling for other well-documented firm characteristics.

Findings

This study reveals an adverse stock price reaction to all the dividend announcements in most GCC markets. The findings also show strong asymmetric effects of COVID-19 on how the markets react to different dividend changes. Likewise, the authors show that investors tend to underreact to the good news of dividend increases amid hard times of crises due to prevailing uncertainty and bearish sentiment. Besides, regression results reveal that firms with dividend reductions during the pandemic experience less adverse market reactions than dividend-decreasing firms prepandemic.

Practical implications

For firms, the findings confirm the role that corporate dividend policy can play in conveying signals to investors, especially during hard times of crises and turbulences, thereby affecting their share price. For policymakers, the results substantially affect market efficiency and firm valuation in the GCC markets.

Originality/value

This study is not only one of the first few attempts to scrutinize how the pandemic has affected the market reaction to changes in corporate dividend policies but also, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the first to examine how corporate dividend policy could affect stock markets during COVID-19 in the context of GCC markets.
