Abstract
To obtain desirable results through people, executives need to be aware of new approaches to employee selection and staffing. The establishment of a new discipline called neurolinguistic programming (NLP) in the USA can offer such new approaches. Research in NLP has identified about two dozen mental subprogrammes people unconsciously use which affect work preferences. NLP calls them meta programmes, from the Greek prefix meta which means “beyond” or “after”. They were so called because they appear to be operating beyond or on another level from that of the main programmes which drive mental processes. Proposes that executives could utilize meta programmes to determine more accurately if job applicants are qualified for the positions they are seeking. These techniques could also be useful in taking transfer and promotion decisions and in working out succession tables.

Abstract
The Bureau of Economics in the Federal Trade Commission has a three-part role in the Agency and the strength of its functions changed over time depending on the preferences and ideology of the FTC’s leaders, developments in the field of economics, and the tenor of the times. The over-riding current role is to provide well considered, unbiased economic advice regarding antitrust and consumer protection law enforcement cases to the legal staff and the Commission. The second role, which long ago was primary, is to provide reports on investigations of various industries to the public and public officials. This role was more recently called research or “policy R&D”. A third role is to advocate for competition and markets both domestically and internationally. As a practical matter, the provision of economic advice to the FTC and to the legal staff has required that the economists wear “two hats,” helping the legal staff investigate cases and provide evidence to support law enforcement cases while also providing advice to the legal bureaus and to the Commission on which cases to pursue (thus providing “a second set of eyes” to evaluate cases). There is sometimes a tension in those functions because building a case is not the same as evaluating a case. Economists and the Bureau of Economics have provided such services to the FTC for over 100 years proving that a sub-organization can survive while playing roles that sometimes conflict. Such a life is not, however, always easy or fun.

An appeal under the Food and Drugs Acts, reported in the present number of the BRITISH FOOD JOURNAL, is an apt illustration of the old saying, that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. In commenting upon the case in question, the Pall Mall Gazette says: “The impression among the great unlearned that the watering of the morning's milk is a great joke is ineradicable; and there is also a common opinion among the Justice Shallows of the provincial bench that the grocer who tricks his customers into buying coffee which is 97 per cent. chicory is a clever practitioner, who ought to be allowed to make his way in the world untrammelled by legal obstructions. Abstract
Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has emerged as a core concept in the field of entrepreneurship. Yet, there continue to be questions about the nature of EO and how best to conceptualize and measure it. This chapter makes the case that EO has grown beyond its roots as a firm-level unidimensional strategy construct and that a new multidimensional version of EO is needed to capture the diverse manifestations and venues for entrepreneurial activity that are now evident around the world – global entrepreneurial orientation (GEO). Building on the five-dimension multidimensional view of EO set forth when Lumpkin and Dess (1996) extended the work of Miller (1983) and Covin and Slevin (1989, 1991), the chapter offers an updated definition of EO and a fresh interpretation of why EO matters theoretically. Despite earnest efforts to reconcile the different approaches to EO, in order to move the study of EO and the theoretical conversation about it forward, we maintain that as a group of scholars and a field, we need to acknowledge that two different versions of EO have emerged. Given that, we consider original approaches to measuring EO, evaluate formative measurement models, consider multiple levels of analysis, call for renewed attention to EO configurations, and discuss whether there is a theory of EO.

Abstract
Explores the developmental role and meaning of executive degree programmes in the lives of working executive participants. Uses Levinson’s concepts of developmental stages, the central components of the life structure, and Mead’s concept that meaning is found in the response of the other, as the theoretical framework. Data were gathered using semi‐structured interviews that explored respondents’ work life, biographical and family influences, and the educational experience. A short questionnaire was used to gather demographic data. The subjects were executive participants in the Executive Program at The Claremont Graduate School. The sample of 12 ranged from 36 to 55 years of age. The respondents were equally distributed by gender. The data supported Mead’s notion that the meaning of the degree programme would be found in the response of significant others. The interview data indicated that respondents enjoyed a high level of support for their educational goals from significant others at home and at work. There was no support for Levinson’s model where the role/meaning of the programme would be different for participants at different stages of adulthood. However, the experience did effect life structures in predictable ways.
