Abstract

Gives an in depth view of the strategies pursued by the world’s leading chief executive officers in an attempt to provide guidance to new chief executives of today. Considers the marketing strategies employed, together with the organizational structures used and looks at the universal concepts that can be applied to any product. Uses anecdotal evidence to formulate a number of theories which can be used to compare your company with the best in the world. Presents initial survival strategies and then looks at ways companies can broaden their boundaries through manipulation and choice. Covers a huge variety of case studies and examples together with a substantial question and answer section.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a step-by-step procedure, referred to as transaction formalism protocol (TFP) that the transaction development personnel will use to formalise transactions (communications) in the domain of infrastructure management. The protocol is developed at two levels of abstraction: TFP specification and TFP tool. This paper presents the TFP specification in detail and introduces the TFP tool briefly. The specific focus of this paper is on the development process of the protocol specification.

Design/methodology/approach

A four-step approach is used to develop the TFP; including, identify and select existing standards, benchmark standards, link and build on these standards, and develop TFP. To develop the protocol, the function modelling standard, integration definition function modelling (IDEF0) is used. The IDEF0 treats each step of the protocol as a function.

Findings

The TFP specification and TFP tool are developed using the proposed methodology. The TFP specification specifies inputs, controls, mechanisms, tools/techniques, and outputs required in each step, whereas the TFP tool defines forms for each step of the protocol that the transaction development personnel will use to define transactions in the domain of infrastructure management.

Practical implications

The development of the TFP would enable the transaction development personnel (including transaction analysts, transaction designers, software developers, process modellers, and industry experts) to formalise transactions effectively and efficiently for the development of ICT-based collaboration systems.

Originality/value

The proposed protocol incorporates shortcomings of existing standards. In contrast to other design standards that focus on either design or design cum implementation of the work processes and communications, the proposed TFP includes transaction monitoring and improvements in addition to the design and implementation of communications. Unlike other standards, the TFP is a detailed step-by-step procedure to ease its usability and understandability.

Abstract

Destination image researchers have investigated and found that several factors have influences on destination image. Some of these factors are related to perceivers (e.g. sociodemographics and behavior); some are related to the destination of concern (e.g. promotional materials); some are independent of both perceivers and the destination (e.g. news coverage and movies); and some are methodological choices made by researchers while measuring destination image (e.g. qualitative methods vs. quantitative methods). However, there has been a lack of studies measuring the relative magnitude of the influence posed by different factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relative impact of factors influencing destination image, by analyzing the large scale and longitudinal dataset of the Michigan Regional Travel Market Survey, applying multiple regression analysis. The nature of this secondary dataset allowed the inclusion of a set of sociodemographic and travel behavior variables as well as one variable related to the survey methodology. Only few of those selected variables (i.e. age, race and visitation) were found to be robust. Implications and future research suggestions are provided.

Abstract

It was discovered that as of December 1981, unlike other states, no junior college or community college in the state of California offered a course of study in Travel‐Tourism Administration enabling a junior or community college graduate to continue a four year program in Travel‐Tourism Administration. In order to arrive at a suitable course of study, it was determined to research educational institutions in various geographic locations, thus a two year institution in Kenya, two three year institutions in the Netherlands and Germany, two graduate schools, one in Switzerland and one in Canada and two community colleges in California were selected for an in‐depth study of their curricula. This was accomplished by means of personal visits and interviews with students and faculty of five institutions. Due to time and travel limitations, curriculum and educational topics were discussed with the principals of the Kenyan and Canadian institutions. At the same time, the literature of several countries, including those of the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France, was thoroughly reviewed to create a foundation of data on which a model program could be designed.

Abstract

The collection, presentation and analysis of international and domestic tourism statistics by different countries and organisations depend on the administrative records maintained at frontiers and by accommodation establishments and other sources and surveys. The basic standard definitions and terminology (of the World Tourism Organisation and U.N. Statistical Office) are:

Abstract

The convergence of multimedia, virtual reality and the Internet is promoting low‐cost multimedia virtual environments which are easily accessible to large network communities. These environments, which facilitate usability and enhance user experience, are very suitable for supporting user‐oriented application domains such as e‐learning and entertainment. This paper presents a multimedia virtual environment, namely the Virtual Video Gallery, an advanced, distributed media on‐demand system which is browsable through a virtual world. By taking a virtual walk inside the gallery, the user can interactively select, preview, watch and control multimedia sessions. While the user‐centred design of the system relies on UML‐based modelling techniques, system implementation is obtained by the integration of Java, VRML and Web‐based technologies. In order to evaluate the user‐oriented effectiveness of the Virtual Video Gallery and compare it to currently available Internet‐based MoD systems, the usability testing of the system was established for deriving both summative and formative usability data.

Abstract

Fieldwork is one of the hallmarks of anthropology. Almost all students of anthropology have geographical and cultural specializations, ranging from a small group to a nation. Their interest areas are often identified or marked by real or putative boundaries; and it is within these boundaries that anthropologists have “founded” their own villages and tribes — “my village”, “my tribe.”
