Abstract

Purpose

Waqf institutions in many Muslim countries including in Malaysia are facing liquidity constraints in developing waqf land. This paper aims to offer a sustainable model of source of financing for waqf institutions to meet their liquidity constraint in developing waqf land, which is known as the crowdfundingwaqf model (CWM). Later, CWM validated its acceptance in the field among the crowdfunders by adopting the theory of technology acceptance model (TAM).

Design/methodology/approach

The primary data are collected from the survey administered to donors or crowdfunders in Selangor, Penang, Johor and Pahang. The total number of respondents are n = 1,000. The analysis is conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM).

Findings

Based on findings, both the perceived usefulness and perceived easy to use of CWM are found to have a positive impact on the behavioral intention of crowdfunders or donors in assisting waqf institutions to develop waqf land in Malaysia. Furthermore, perceived easy to use has a positive relationship and direct effect on perceived usefulness of crowdfunders to use the CWM.

Research limitations/implications

There are some limitations of the current study. The sample size and area of study become the obvious limitations. Thus, there is a need for caution in the interpretation of the results, and the conclusion cannot be as generalized. Besides, the use of current factors might limit the ability to explore other potentially important determinants of the crowdfunders’ behavioral intention on using CWM. Thus, future research can be conducted by incorporating new factors and provide new insights for optimizing CWM. Other potential moderator variables should be included into the research model in order to obtain more robust results.

Practical implications

The findings of this paper will provide a new avenue for waqf institutions to raise funds for developing waqf land, particularly in Malaysia. The present study also has implications for the government and policymakers. Through CWM, it enables to reduce the expenses of the government for the development of waqf land. Indeed, CWM could be applied in other Muslim countries that are facing liquidity constraint in developing waqf land.

Originality/value

This paper offers an additional literature on waqf and crowdfunding, especially in the Malaysian context. The paper proposes a viable alternative model for waqf institutions as a source of financing by using crowdfunding.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the probability that people (prospective donors) would be willing to use the crowdfunding-Waqf model (CWM), depending on certain variables and characteristics. This study aims to develop an alternative financial model to address Malaysia’s Waqf land financing problem.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey study was conducted to assess the probability that people would be willing to use the CWM. This study used descriptive analysis and the logistic regression model as analytical tools. Descriptive analysis was conducted using frequencies, which means the number of respondents for each variable or item, such as demographic variables. The logistic regression model was used to obtain the probability that individuals would be willing to use the CWM, based on certain variables.

Findings

This study found that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, gender and Waqf knowledge positively affected the likelihood that people would willingly use the CWM for developing Waqf land. In contrast, other factors such as age group, marital status, income level, internet usage, perceived risk of crowdfunding and Waqf perception did not affect this likelihood. Further investigation indicated that being of middle-income level and possessing crowdfunding knowledge positively affected the likelihood that people were willing to use the CWM. The highest probability of the willingness to use the CWM was identified among middle-income males who knew about Waqf and perceived the CWM as useful and easy to use.

Research limitations/implications

The results of this study and other key findings are expected to be implemented by Waqf institutions in Malaysia to develop policies related to Waqf land in general or to the CWM in particular. The findings are also expected to benefit individuals, organisations and countries, and they could also be adapted and validated in other nations.

Originality/value

This study focused on developing a better chance of finding people with specific characteristics and factors that lead them to intentionally use the CWM. The probability of willingness to use the CWM based on certain variables has not yet been evaluated. Recognising how higher probabilities can be identified using every factor and characteristic will enable future CWM users to be better mapped, which is expected to increase the effectiveness of developing the CWM.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to inquire about the opinions and recommendations of various experts on the crowdfunding waqf model (CWM), particularly in terms of its suitability, applicability and prospect in the market.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used primary data which are collected from semi-structured interviews conducted with several experts from various backgrounds. For examining the data, this paper has used thematic analysis.

Findings

The experts support the suitability of CWM in providing financing resource to develop waqf lands. They highlight the importance of establishing, managing and operating CWM under the aegis of the State Islamic Religious Council in Malaysia and supervising by the Wakaf, Zakat or Hajj Department (JAWHAR). They further point out that the donors or crowdfunders, interesting project, promotion and regulation are key factors that influence the sustainability of CWM.

Originality/value

This paper adds to the literature on waqf land and crowdfunding, especially from the Malaysian context. This paper validates the CWM in terms of its suitability, applicability and prospect in the market by interviewing experts from various backgrounds.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the behavioural intention of donors or crowd funders to use crowdfunding-waqf model (CWM), as this model is proposed to address the liquidity problem faced by waqf institution in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The primary data are collected from the survey administered to donors or crowd funders in Klang Valley and the analysis is conducted using Partial Least Squares (PLS). The model has validated its acceptance in the field by adopting the theory of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM).

Findings

This study has revealed that both the perceived usefulness and perceived easy to use are found to have a positive impact on the intention of donors or crowd funders in assisting waqf institution to develop waqf land in Malaysia. Furthermore, perceived easy to use has a positive relationship and direct effect with perceived usefulness of crowd funders to use the CWM.

Research limitations/implications

The variables that have been used based on TAM in this study are constantly in flux. There are other variables such as trust, social norm, orientations that might be affecting the adoption level of donors or crowd funders in Malaysia. In addition, the current study is covering only Klang Valley, Malaysia. Future research is nevertheless still required that incorporate other variables and extend the study to other states of Malaysia.

Practical implications

The findings of this paper will provide waqf institution with an alternative source for raising capital to develop waqf asset. The present study also has implications for government and policy makers.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, no study has incorporated an element of crowdfunding to develop waqf land. Thus, the present study is relevant in extending the importance of crowdfunding as a source of financing for waqf institutions in developing waqf land.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to attempt to offer a viable alternative model of source of financing to develop waqf land, which is known as crowdfunding-waqf model (CWM).

Design/methodology/approach

The extant literature on the financing constraints faced by waqf institution in developing waqf land, and crowdfunding have been reviewed critically and used in the attempt of proposing an alternative model.

Findings

The paper has developed CWM as a source of financing for waqf institution in Malaysia. This model is expected to provide waqf institution in Malaysia to meet their liquidity constraint in developing waqf land. It also involves an involvement of crowdfunding platform.

Research limitations/implications

The paper is based on conceptual explorations of literature in the area of waqf and crowdfunding. This is a conceptual paper, so it did not use any empirical analysis.

Practical implications

The findings of this paper will provide waqf institution with an alternative source of financing to develop waqf land. The present study also has implications for government and policymakers. By involving crowdfunding, it helps the government to reduce its expenses for the development of waqf land in Malaysia.

Originality/value

This paper offers an additional literature on waqf and crowdfunding especially from the Malaysian context. The paper proposes a viable alternative model for waqf institution as a source of financing by using crowdfunding, to develop waqf land. This model incorporates donation-based crowdfunding model and reward-based crowdfunding model. This model is different with the existing way of raising Cash waqf, which is conducted also via online basis by financial institutions and state government agencies. Later, the collected Cash waqf fund is transformed into illiquid assets such as building of hospitals, educational institutions and purchasing machinery and assets. However, the nature of proposed model in this study is to assist waqf institution to develop waqf land. Crowdfunding model is used to raise fund to develop waqf land in Malaysia. The fund collected via crowdfunding model is based on donation and reward based, not based on the nature of Cash waqf.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the factors that affect individuals’ intentions of participating in waqf-based crowdfunding model in Kuwait.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model. The data were collected by online questionnaire survey based on 419 donors in waqf institutions in Kuwait. The data were analysed using the partial least squares structural equation modelling technique.

Findings

The results illustrate that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating condition positively affect behavioural intention towards waqf-based crowdfunding projects.

Practical implications

The paper presents an alternative source for waqf institutions to raise capital to develop waqf assets in majority and minority Muslim countries. The findings of this study hold significant implications for government officials and policymakers.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first to explore waqf crowdfunding in Kuwait using the UTAUT model. There needs to be more research on waqf-giving behaviour in Kuwait, particularly concerning crowdfunding, which has become more popular recently. Thus, this paper aims to address this gap and contribute new insights to the field.

Abstract

Purpose

The potential of waqf is so great in Indonesia but has not been optimized. This paper aims to offer a model for waqf institutions to adopt financial technology for developing productive and social waqf. The authors cunduct an assesment of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM3), Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) in seeing to the crowdfunders’ behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted a structural equation using the partial least square approach to test the hypotheses. Based on purposive sampling, the spread of questionnaires through online surveys throughout Indonesia consists of all islands. A total of 297 respondents collected the questionnaires.

Findings

Based on the findings, acceptance models have a positive and significant impact on the behavioral intentions of crowdfunders, while Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology have no significant effect.

Research limitations/implications

The sample of this study involved potential crowdfunders from all over the islands in Indonesia, but these results cannot be generalized because of limitations in terms of the sampling technique used. However, the results of this study can be used as an illustration of how crowdfunders behave in donating money using financial technology.

Practical implications

The results of this study provide a comprehensive perspective for policymakers, especially the Indonesian Waqf Board as the waqf authority that regulates waqf nazir to improve quality by adopting crowdfunding financial technology in collecting waqf funds. In addition, in terms of implications for the government, this waqf crowdfunding model will reduce spending and increase economic growth.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first in looking at the waqf crowdfunding in Indonesia by looking at two reliable technology determinant models. Studies on cash waqf in Indonesia are many, but they do not look at the issue of crowdfunding, which has gained more attention recently. This paper aims to fill this gap, and this becomes the novelty.

Abstract

Purpose

Small farmers are considered one of the most affected communities worldwide due to poverty. Hence, this paper aims to study how the proposed waqf crowdfunding models are intended to provide alternative sources of funds for the waqf institutions and farmers.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study employed a qualitative method by analysing the relevant literature on crowdfunding, waqf cash, waqf and agriculture, together with the primary sources of the Ḥadīth.

Findings

This paper provides the conceptual framework of two waqf crowdfunding model (WCM) and the required parameters for their application. It is found that crowdfunding can bring immense benefits to the agriculture sector and farmers if it is integrated with waqf. This system will enable underprivileged farmers to meet their necessities and participate in their country's economic development.

Research limitations/implications

Future research may consider a waqf crowdfunding integrated model targeting other businesses.

Originality/value

This study provides the required parameters for the application of the proposed models. Four areas were analysed and discussed: the regulatory compliance parameters, the shariah compliance parameters, the risk management parameters and, finally, waqf governance parameters. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first proposed waqf and crowdfunding integrated model for agricultural financing.

Abstract

Purpose

Cash waqf is a powerful financial instrument that deals with the issue of liquidity constraints in waqf institutions. While there are several models of cash waqf operating in different countries, there is increasing demand for innovative cash waqf models, especially within the financial technology context. This paper aims to propose a practical alternative model of funding for waqf institutions using the concepts of crowdfunding and cash waqf.

Design/methodology/approach

This study evaluated the literature relevant to cash waqf models that have been implemented in different countries and proposed a new viable alternative model.

Findings

Results offer an alternative financing model, named crowdfunding cash waqf model, for waqf institutions to overcome monetary constraints and enable development projects to be completed.

Practical implications

The current study has important implications for both officials and relevant stakeholders. It is sought to bring better consistency between cash waqf donors, solving the liquidity problem faced by waqf institutions, enhancing the transparency of waqf institutions and their use of waqf funds, wealth circulation and financing businesses without interest-based loans (riba). By incorporating a crowdfunding and investment mechanism in the model, this method of collecting funds will assist governments in reducing their expenditure on waqf institutions and other social development programmes.

Originality/value

The proposed model differs from current methods of generating cash waqf, including those are also internet-based. The proposed model is devised to help waqf institutions achieve financial sustainability by including an investment mechanism in the model to sustain the development of waqf projects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the adoption of waqf technology (Waqftech) using blockchain smart contracts for corporate waqf crowdfunding. Despite the growing interest in Waqftech, Malaysian enterprises have not fully embraced this emerging technology because of uncertainty regarding the benefits it offers to contributors. The research incorporates two theoretical frameworks: the electronic data interchange (EDI) model for firms’ technology adoption, and the triple bottom line theory (TBL) for corporate social responsibility.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative method using a cross-sectional survey design with a five-point Likert scale questionnaire was used. Data was collected from 210 decision-makers representing small and medium-sized enterprises and analyzed using partial least squares-structural equation modeling.

Findings

The findings from this research suggest that Malaysian enterprises are influenced by both corporate and social predictive benefits when using blockchain crowdfunding, but not by environmental benefits. The adoption of blockchain smart contracts does not correlate with predictive environmental benefits because of misconceptions about the disruptive technology’s impact on biological and digital environmental preservation.

Research limitations/implications

This research focuses on organizational behavior rather than individual users of waqf crowdfunding, and it is limited, primarily focusing within Malaysia and regions with similar waqf structures.

Practical implications

The Waqftech framework allows innovative mechanisms for executing corporate waqf investment returns to the intended beneficiaries through the smart contracts’ platform. In addition, this study supports relevant corporate social responsibility and creating shared value technology adoption theories, including EDI and TBL. Aside from this, the study provides empirical implications for waqf management using fintech platforms.

Originality/value

This groundbreaking study focuses on creating a Waqftech model for corporate waqf crowdfunding. The results of this study are important for the development of government policies that support the use of Waqftech in charitable fundraising. More research on biological and digital environmental perspectives is proposed to foster investors’ confidence in the visibility of digital tracking and lead to swift investments in future metaverse fundraising platforms.
