Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to give a comprehensive review and synthesis of automated textual analysis of corporate disclosure to show how the accuracy of disclosure tone has been incremented with the evolution of developed automated methods that have been used to calculate tone in prior studies.

Design/methodology/approach

This study have conducted the survey on “automated textual analysis of corporate disclosure and its impact” by searching at Google Scholar and Scopus research database after the year 2000 to prepare the list of papers. After classifying the prior literature into a dictionary-based and machine learning-based approach, this study have again sub-classified those papers according to two other dimensions, namely, information sources of disclosure and the impact of tone on the market.

Findings

This study found literature on how value relevance of tone is varied with the use of different automated methods and using different information sources. This study also found literature on the impact of such tone on market. These are contributing to help investor’s decision-making and earnings and returns prediction by researchers. The literature survey shows that the research gap lies in the development of methodologies toward the calculation of tone more accurately. This study also mention how different information sources and methodologies can influence the change in disclosure tone for the same firm, which, in turn, may change market performance. The research gap also lies in finding the determinants of disclosure tone with large scale data.

Originality/value

After reviewing some papers based on automated textual analysis of corporate disclosure, this study shows how the accuracy of the result is incrementing according to the evolution of automated methodology. Apart from the methodological research gaps, this study also identify some other research gaps related to determinants (corporate governance, firm-level, macroeconomic factors, etc.) and transparency or credibility of disclosure which could stimulate new research agendas in the areas of automated textual analysis of corporate disclosure.

Abstract

Purpose

Several studies have addressed the use of four-dimensional (4D) building information modeling (BIM) for construction management. However, the automation of the processes for generating 4D models and their integrated use with Location-Based Planning and the Last Planner® System is not well discussed. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a method for automating the generation and use of 4D BIM models integrated with Location-Based Planning and Last Planner® System supporting project control cycles.

Design/methodology/approach

The research strategy adopted was Design Science Research. The automated method for using the 4D models was developed and refined in two residential building projects in Brazil, along with 31 meetings and involving 11 direct users. The assessment of the proposed method focuses on four constructs: the impact of process automation, the impact on the identification and assessment of site progress and the planning process, ease of adoption and utility of the proposed method.

Findings

The results of this paper indicated increased adherence between planned and executed through an automated method for using the 4D models. The established routines enabled automating the link between the planning levels and the three-dimensional (3D) model, providing a more agile and updated data source and achieving 92.8% of user satisfaction regarding the deadline and frequency of delivery of the 4D model reports. Moreover, this study identified the relationships between the processes of the method proposed and Digital Models.

Originality/value

The primary scientific value achieved in this study is creating a method for automating processes and simplifying steps for the generation and use of 4D BIM models in the production planning and control cycles during the construction phase.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop and test a method of automating, for online retailers, the practice of adaptive selling, which is typically used by salespeople in face-to-face interactions. This method customizes persuasive messages for individual customers as they navigate a retailer’s website.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper demonstrates a method for the online implementation of automated adaptive selling using sales influence tactics. Automated adaptive selling is compared to nonadaptive selling in three e-commerce field studies.

Findings

The results reveal that adaptive selling is more effective than nonadaptive selling. The click-through rates increased significantly when adaptive selling was used.

Research limitations/implications

This paper highlights the effectiveness of existing theories concerning adaptive human-to-human selling and their utility to online selling. The authors demonstrate the added value of adaptive selling in e-commerce, thereby opening up a novel area of research into adaptive selling online. While the paper focuses on the adjustment of sales influence tactics, other factors could be investigated for adjustment in future research (e.g. prices).

Practical implications

The methods, described in detail, are readily available for implementation by online retailers. The implementations are timely and increasingly valuable as e-commerce expands into interpersonal channels (e.g. instant messengers and social media).

Originality/value

To the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first to formally implement automated adaptive selling as described in the ISTEA model in an e-commerce setting.

Abstract

Purpose

In smaller projects with limited resources, schedule updates are often not performed. In these situations, traditional delay analysis methods cannot be used as they all require updated schedules. The objective of this study is to develop a model that performs delay analysis by using only an as-planned schedule and the expense records kept on site.

Design/methodology/approach

This study starts out by developing an approach that estimates activity duration ranges in a network schedule by using as-planned and as-built s-curves. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to generate candidate as-built schedules using these activity duration ranges. If necessary, the duration ranges are refined by a follow-up procedure that systematically relaxes the ranges and develops new as-built schedules. The candidate schedule that has the closest s-curve to the actual s-curve is considered to be the most realistic as-built schedule. Finally, the as-planned vs. as-built delay analysis method is performed to determine which activity(ies) caused project delay. This process is automated using Matlab. A test case is used to demonstrate that the proposed automated method can work well.

Findings

The automated process developed in this study has the capability to develop activity duration ranges, perform Monte Carlo simulation, generate a large number of candidate as-built schedules, build s-curves for each of the candidate schedules and identify the most realistic one that has an s-curve that is closest to the actual as-built s-curve. The test case confirmed that the proposed automated system works well as it resulted in an as-built schedule that has an s-curve that is identical to the actual as-built s-curve. To develop an as-built schedule using this method is a reasonable way to make a case in or out of a court of law.

Research limitations/implications

Practitioners specifying activity ranges to perform Monte Carlo simulation can be characterized as subjective and perhaps arbitrary. To minimize the effects of this limitation, this study proposes a method that determines duration ranges by comparing as-built and as-planned cash-flows, and then by systematically modifying the search space. Another limitation is the assumption that the precedence logic in the as-planned network remains the same throughout construction. Since updated schedules are not available in the scenario considered in this study, and since in small projects the logic relationships are fairly stable over the short project duration, the assumption of a stable logic throughout construction may be reasonable, but this issue needs to be explored further in future research.

Practical implications

Delays are common in construction projects regardless of the size of the project. The critical path method (CPM) schedules of many smaller projects, especially in developing countries, are not updated during construction. In case updated schedules are not available, the method presented in this paper represents an automated, practical and easy-to-use tool that allows parties to a contract to perform delay analysis with only an as-planned schedule and the expense logs kept on site.

Originality/value

Since an as-built schedule cannot be built without updated schedules, and since the absence of an as-built schedule precludes the use of any delay analysis method that is acceptable in courts of law, using the method presented in this paper may very well be the only solution to the problem.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to review the existing fatigue and vibration-based structural health monitoring techniques and highlight the advantages of combining both approaches.

Design/methodology/approach

Fatigue monitoring requires a fatigue model of the material, the stresses at specific points of the structure, a cycle counting technique and a fatigue damage criterion. Firstly, this paper reviews existing structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques, addresses their principal classifications and presents the main characteristics of each technique, with a particular emphasis on modal-based methodologies. Automated modal analysis, damage detection and localisation techniques are also reviewed. Fatigue monitoring is an SHM technique which evaluate the structural fatigue damage in real time. Stress estimation techniques and damage accumulation models based on the S-N field and the Miner rule are also reviewed in this paper.

Findings

A vast amount of research has been carried out in the field of SHM. The literature about fatigue calculation, fatigue testing, fatigue modelling and remaining fatigue life is also extensive. However, the number of publications related to monitor the fatigue process is scarce. A methodology to perform real-time structural fatigue monitoring, in both time and frequency domains, is presented.

Originality/value

Fatigue monitoring can be combined (applied simultaneously) with other vibration-based SHM techniques, which might significantly increase the reliability of the monitoring techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

Cracks on surface are often identified as one of the early indications of damage and possible future catastrophic structural failure. Thus, detection of cracks is vital for the timely inspection, health diagnosis and maintenance of infrastructures. However, conventional visual inspection-based methods are criticized for being subjective, greatly affected by inspector's expertise, labor-intensive and time-consuming.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a novel self-adaptive-based method for automated and semantic crack detection and recognition in various infrastructures using computer vision technologies. The developed method is envisioned on three main models that are structured to circumvent the shortcomings of visual inspection in detection of cracks in walls, pavement and deck. The first model deploys modified visual geometry group network (VGG19) for extraction of global contextual and local deep learning features in an attempt to alleviate the drawbacks of hand-crafted features. The second model is conceptualized on the integration of K-nearest neighbors (KNN) and differential evolution (DE) algorithm for the automated optimization of its structure. The third model is designated for validating the developed method through an extensive four layers of performance evaluation and statistical comparisons.

Findings

It was observed that the developed method significantly outperformed other crack and detection models. For instance, the developed wall crack detection method accomplished overall accuracy, F-measure, Kappa coefficient, area under the curve, balanced accuracy, Matthew's correlation coefficient and Youden's index of 99.62%, 99.16%, 0.998, 0.998, 99.17%, 0.989 and 0.983, respectively.

Originality/value

Literature review lacks an efficient method which can look at crack detection and recognition of an ensemble of infrastructures. Furthermore, there is absence of systematic and detailed comparisons between crack detection and recognition models.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to studiy social recruiting for finding suitable candidates on social networks. The main goal is to develop a methodological approach that would enable preselection of candidates using social network analysis. The research focus is on the automated collection of data using the web scraping method. Based on the information collected from the users' profiles, three clusters of skills and interests are created: technical, empirical and education-based. The identified clusters enable the recruiter to effectively search for suitable candidates.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a new methodological approach for the preselection of candidates based on social network analysis (SNA). The defined methodological approach includes the following phases: Social network selection according to the defined preselection goals; Automatic data collection from the selected social network using the web scraping method; Filtering, processing and statistical analysis of data. Data analysis to identify relevant information for the preselection of candidates using attributes clustering and SNA. Preselection of candidates is based on the information obtained.

Findings

It is possible to contribute to candidate preselection in the recruiting process by identifying key categories of skills and interests of candidates. Using a defined methodological approach allows recruiters to identify candidates who possess the skills and interests defined by the search. A defined method automates the verification of the existence, or absence, of a particular category of skills or interests on the profiles of the potential candidates. The primary intention is reflected in the screening and filtering of the skills and interests of potential candidates, which contributes to a more effective preselection process.

Research limitations/implications

A small sample of the participants is present in the preliminary evaluation. A manual revision of the collected skills and interests is conducted. The recruiters should have basic knowledge of the SNA methodology in order to understand its application in the described method. The reliability of the collected data is assessed, because users provide data themselves when filling out their social network profiles.

Practical implications

The presented method could be applied on different social networks, such as GitHub or AngelList for clustering profile skills. For a different social network, only the web scraping instructions would change. This method is composed of mutually independent steps. This means that each step can be implemented differently, without changing the whole process. The results of a pilot project evaluation indicate that the HR experts are interested in the proposed method and that they would be willing to include it in their practice.

Social implications

The social implication should be the determination of relevant skills and interests during the preselection phase of candidates in the process of social recruitment.

Originality/value

In contrast to previous studies that were discussed in the paper, this paper defines a method for automatic data collection using the web scraper tool. The described method allows the collection of more data in a shorter period. Additionally, it reduces the cost of creating an initial data set by removing the cost of hiring interviewers, questioners and people who collect data from social networks. A completely automated process of data collection from a particular social network stands out from this model from currently available solutions. Considering the method of data collection implemented in this paper, the proposed method provides opportunities to extend the scope of collected data to implicit data, which is not possible using the tools presented in other papers.

Purpose

Incipient detection of pavement deterioration (such as crack identification) is critical to optimizing road maintenance because it enables preventative steps to be implemented to mitigate damage and possible failure. Traditional visual inspection has been largely superseded by semi-automatic/automatic procedures given significant advancements in image processing. Therefore, there is a need to develop automated tools to detect and classify cracks.

Design/methodology/approach

The literature review is employed to evaluate existing attempts to use Hough transform algorithm and highlight issues that should be improved. Then, developing a simple low-cost crack detection method based on the Hough transform algorithm for pavement crack detection and classification.

Findings

Analysis results reveal that model accuracy reaches 92.14% for vertical cracks, 93.03% for diagonal cracks and 95.61% for horizontal cracks. The time lapse for detecting the crack type for one image is circa 0.98 s for vertical cracks, 0.79 s for horizontal cracks and 0.83 s for diagonal cracks. Ensuing discourse serves to illustrate the inherent potential of a simple low-cost image processing method in automated pavement crack detection. Moreover, this method provides direct guidance for long-term pavement optimal maintenance decisions.

Research limitations/implications

The outcome of this research can help highway agencies to detect and classify cracks accurately for a very long highway without a need for manual inspection, which can significantly minimize cost.

Originality/value

Hough transform algorithm was tested in terms of detect and classify a large dataset of highway images, and the accuracy reaches 92.14%, which can be considered as a very accurate percentage regarding automated cracks and distresses classification.

Abstract

Technology for training military teams has evolved through a convergence of advances in simulation technology for individual and collective training, methods for analyzing teamwork and designing training solutions, and intelligent tutoring technologies that adapt training to the student, to accelerate learning. A number of factors have slowed this evolution toward intelligent team tutoring systems (ITTS), including the challenges of processing communications data, which are the currency of teamwork, and the paucity of automated and generalizable measures of team work. Several systems fulfill a subset of the features required of an ITTS, namely the use of team training objectives, teamwork models, measures of teamwork, diagnostic capability, instructional strategies, and adaptation of training to team needs. We describe these systems: the Advanced Embedded Training System (AETS), Synthetic Cognition for Operational Team Training (SCOTT), the AWO Trainer, the Benchmarked Experiential System for Training (BEST), and the Cross-Platform Mission Visualization Tool. We close this chapter with recommendations for future research.
