Abstract

Purpose

Growing application of micro aerial vehicle (MAV) sets in demand for accurate computations of low Reynolds number flows past their wings. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of unsteady freestream velocity or wind gust on a harmonically plunging symmetric NACA0012 airfoil at Re = 1,000. The influence of unsteady parameters, such as reduced frequency of plunging motion (0.25 < k < 1.5), non-dimensional plunging amplitude (ho = 0.2) and non-dimensional amplitude of wind gust (0.1 = λ = 0.4) has been studied.

Design/methodology/approach

Computations have been carried out using commercial software ANSYS Fluent 16.0. To incorporate the plunging motion, the entire reference frame is oscillating, and thereby, a source term is added in the Navier–Stokes equation.

Findings

The results have been presented in the form of streamlines, vorticity contours, lift and drag signals and their spectra. It is observed that the ratio of plunging frequency to gust frequency (f/fg) has strong influence on periodic characteristics of unsteady wake. It has also been observed that for a fixed plunging amplitude, an increase in value of k results into a change from positive drag to thrust.

Practical implications

The research has implications in the development of MAV.

Originality/value

This study is intended to get a better understanding of unsteady parameters associated with gusty flow in flapping wing applications and possible ways to alleviate its adverse effect on it.

Abstract

One of the main concerns in human resource management around the world is how education is encouraging the understanding of global issues, cultures, technological changes and social trends to make appropriate decisions in firm management. This chapter will aim to illustrate the main issues in international business (IB) theory and practice that need to be considered in configurating a global-minded curriculum that is able to produce global-minded human resources. Hence, to determine what inputs must be considered in building an exceptional curriculum and successful educational strategies, the author observe the assertions from three perspectives: first, the contributors to the IB and the multinational enterprise theory; second, the author explores the stakeholders’ perspective, who see the benefits and assume the consequences of education in the field; and third, the author reviews the researchers who in recent years have studied the problems and trends of the discipline.

Abstract

Purpose

Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) has importance in several industrial applications. The study aims to provide a comparison of two important methods used for explainable AI algorithms.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study multiple criteria has been used to compare between explainable Ranked Area Integrals (xRAI) and integrated gradient (IG) methods for the explainability of AI algorithms, based on a multimethod phase-wise analysis research design.

Findings

The theoretical part includes the comparison of frameworks of two methods. In contrast, the methods have been compared across five dimensions like functional, operational, usability, safety and validation, from a practical point of view.

Research limitations/implications

A comparison has been made by combining criteria from theoretical and practical points of view, which demonstrates tradeoffs in terms of choices for the user.

Originality/value

Our results show that the xRAI method performs better from a theoretical point of view. However, the IG method shows a good result with both model accuracy and prediction quality.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper reviews 105 Scopus-indexed articles to identify the degree, scope and purposes of machine learning (ML) adoption in the core functions of human resource management (HRM).

Design/methodology/approach

A semi-systematic approach has been used in this review. It allows for a more detailed analysis of the literature which emerges from multiple disciplines and uses different methods and theoretical frameworks. Since ML research comes from multiple disciplines and consists of several methods, a semi-systematic approach to literature review was considered appropriate.

Findings

The review suggests that HRM has embraced ML, albeit it is at a nascent stage and is receiving attention largely from technology-oriented researchers. ML applications are strongest in the areas of recruitment and performance management and the use of decision trees and text-mining algorithms for classification dominate all functions of HRM. For complex processes, ML applications are still at an early stage; requiring HR experts and ML specialists to work together.

Originality/value

Given the current focus of organizations on digitalization, this review contributes significantly to the understanding of the current state of ML integration in HRM. Along with increasing efficiency and effectiveness of HRM functions, ML applications improve employees' experience and facilitate performance in the organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

Contemporary firms are increasingly focusing on enhancing the customer experience (CX) to gain a sustainable competitive advantage. However, despite the rapid growth of CX research from both the customer's and the firm's perspectives, the intellectual structure of CX research remains tenuous, thus requiring further investigation. Addressing this gap, the authors review and map the existing corpus of CX literature, from which important implications are drawn.

Design/methodology/approach

After inventorizing the CX literature (1997–2021), the authors apply bibliometric (e.g. co-citation) analysis to identify key CX articles and pertinent CX-publishing journals, followed by the identification of key CX research themes through network analysis.

Findings

The authors first document chief CX-publishing journals and articles and identify their respective contributions. The authors, then, derive five core CX themes, including CX through the customer journey, S-D Logic-informed CX, interactive service–based CX, CX in the servicescape and CX and consumption. The authors conclude by developing an agenda for future CX research based on the study findings.

Originality/value

By offering a pioneering analysis of the corpus of CX research (1997–2021), these analyses offer a pertinent theoretical contribution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the influence of image on student satisfaction and loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to accomplish the objectives proposed, a model reflecting the influence of image on student satisfaction and loyalty is applied. The model is tested through use of structural equations and the final sample is of 2,687 students.

Findings

The model shows that image is the construct that most influences student satisfaction. The influence of image is also relevant on student loyalty.

Research limitations/implications

In this paper, the constructs of image resulted in a reliability level of 0.846; future research is needed in order to find more reliable image measurement indicators.

Practical implications

If higher education institutions have to compete through image, the first step to take is to measure the university image held by its students. It is proven by this paper that the construct which most influences student satisfaction in higher education is the image construct, with a total effect of 0.86. Thus, if the institutional image rises or falls by a unit in terms of valorisation, satisfaction increases or diminishes by a proportion of 0.86 and loyalty by a proportion of 0.73.

Originality/value

Several studies have shown that, in general, corporate image is important to attract and retain customers. This paper depicts the specific influences of image specifically on student satisfaction and student loyalty and also the respective level of influence.

The learning outcomes of this paper are follows: students should be able to understand the complexity related to the provision of safe drinking water for disaster-hit areas and effective solutions to overcome this problem. Also, students should be able to evaluate the need for awareness about post traumas mental health especially in case of disasters and identify how technology can provide answers to such critical issues.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to consolidate the state of research in mobile commerce (m-commerce) technology adoption from 2008 to 2017. This study not only reviews the evolution of m-commerce literature but also highlights the significant contribution of authors and their productive collaborations in the development of this area.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 184 peer-reviewed articles focusing on m-commerce adoption were obtained after applying search criteria on Scopus database. After using inclusion and exclusion criteria to achieve the objective of this study, 86 journals were shortlisted. The study further discusses the dispersion of various m-commerce applications being explored in m-commerce literature. In addition, dominating technology adoption theories and the most used keywords have also been identified and discussed in this study.

Findings

This study indicates that technology acceptance model and unified theory of acceptance and use of technology are the most exploited technology adoption theories. Moreover, the dominating constructs in literature are perceived usefulness, ease of use social influence/social norm on behavior intention, attitude intention followed by performance expectancy, facilitating condition and effort expectancy influence on intention.

Originality/value

This study presents a detailed association rule mining and community analysis to show the association among constructs such as usefulness, ease of ease, social influence and intention as dominant group in this area. The study also identifies lesser explored constructs and indicates possible future research to validate and strengthen their understanding further.

Abstract

Quality management practices have recently flourished across the globe. In this research we review and integrate the literature by identifying and organizing significant research findings, and develop a conceptual model of the relationships between international environmental conditions (e.g. socio‐cultural, political‐legal, economic, and educational factors) and dimensions of quality management (e.g. strategic quality planning, customer focus and satisfaction, human resource development and management, information and analysis, management of process quality, and quality and operational results). The model developed here helps us move beyond examining the differences in quality practices across countries to an understanding of why such differences occur, and helps practitioners gain a better perspective on how quality management techniques can be adopted in different regions around the world.
