Stochastic models are seldom used when we analyze the stability and the efficiency of enterprise cost systems. Despite of numerous restrictions, along with the complexity of mathematic formalization, this approach would encourage more rational use of resources under conditions of extreme change in external and internal business environments. Different methods of Maximum Likelihood Estimations (MLE) have been introduced to weaken these parametric drawbacks.

However, the high computational complexity makes its use difficult. This work prevailingly demonstrates the use of coenosis theory to design and analyze cost systems of industrial enterprises, including the use of numerically reliable statistical computations.

This approach can also be observed as a delicate parametric adjustment of economic coenosis structures ensuring stability and sustainability. The chapter provides the example of the mentioned methodology within the frame of an ordinary industrial enterprise.

According to the National Advisory Committee Report on Creativity in Education (N.A.C.C.C.E./DfEE, 1999), creative learning involves thinking and acting in an imaginative and yet purposeful way, guided by an overall objective, and the report also argues that skilled teachers and well designed courses can help anyone to be a creative learner, by assisting them in developing original ideas in a positive way. However, the question is what happens to creative learning in education when the main education objective that guides students is to arrive at pre-set answers within an exchange-based, commodity form of engagement, solely for the purposes of passing a course with a good grade and obtaining an education qualification. These are the conditions of a banking education. The present chapter considers creativity under such conditions in two different classifications of laboratory work in science education, both of which have been identified from ethnographic data from 40 hours of participant observation in school laboratories at one main upper-secondary school site in Sweden in 1999, which was carried out as part of a one-year participant observation on a half-time basis at the school in question. Conversations with students and tutors there and from four other sites in 1999, 2000 and 2003 have been particularly important in the research.

Any endeavor to circumscribe, with a certain degree of precision, the nature of the relationship between social science and critical theory would appear to be daunting. Over the course of the past century, and especially since the end of World War II, countless efforts have been made in economics, psychology, political science, and sociology, to illuminate the myriad manifestations of modern social life, from a multiplicity of angles. It is doubtful that it would be possible to do justice to all the different variants of social science, in an assessment of their relationship to critical theory. Moreover, given the proliferation of critical theories since the 1980s, the effort to devise a “map” that would reflect the particular orientations and intricacies of each approach to critical theory also would be exacting, in its own right.¹

The central thesis developed during this study is the idea that human dignity must be understood as the right to be recognised as a participant in the institutional practice of human and fundamental rights. This form of association between human dignity and human rights is a response to the various barbarities of the twentieth century, whether by fascist, Nazi, and socialist regimes in Europe, either by South African apartheid or by military dictatorships in Latin America. Human dignity after Auschwitz is the foundation for the construction of a post-metaphysical institutional morality, independent of an idealised concept of rational subjective personality and closer to the historical and material conditions to guarantee the political personality of every human being. In order to defend this thesis, the study is conducted in two steps. First, two conceptions of dignity will be discussed, namely dignity of man and human dignity. Second, it is intended to discuss how the modern conception was incorporated into the practice of human rights after Auschwitz as a way of responding to a crisis in the modern model of the practice of rights.

The vehicle–track interaction and the resulting dynamic response of the vehicle involve a number of complex nonlinear problems. Large vertical loads act through a small contact patch leading to very high contact pressures. Transverse loads acting through this contact induce a relative velocity between wheel and rail expressed in non-dimensional form as a creepage. The wheel and rail profiles determine the contact patch shape and affect the ability of the vehicle to run stably. If the yaw stiffness of the axles is too low, the vehicle will become unstable at a relatively low speed; conversely, if the yaw stiffness is too high, the curving behaviour will be adversely affected. The vehicle suspension, especially the secondary suspension, also affects the ride comfort of passengers. Finally, it is shown how the speed profiles of accelerating and decelerating trains can be calculated from basic assumptions about the train power, adhesion and rolling resistance.

Steven Lukes’ classic three-dimensional model of power provides an intellectual focus for the core exploration of relations between epistemology and data generation, the two key elements that we usually identify with methodology. The discussion culminates in an affirmative argument for the value of approaching methodology as jazz, the creative popular music that grounds reliable, humane sense in Kubrick's movie and provides an apt analogy for much of the leading scholarship in the LSA tradition.

This paper illustrates a story of “rise and fall” of a Balanced Scorecard (BSC) project in a Sri Lankan firm. The “rise” was due to a series of attempts made by CIMA (SL) for popularising BSC practice among business leaders and local consultants, and the “fall” was due to professional rivalry between engineering managers and accounting personnel and the decline of interest on the part of the owner-manager. In relation to these two opposing phenomena, the paper shows how and why the firm first receives the BSC project as a useful management system device, and later, how and why the management tends to undermine the use of BSC. The argument advanced is that the popularisation of BSC is part of a project of accounting knowledge diffusion which comes through the broader globalisation process, but the failure in sustaining BSC is due to the upsurge of professional rivalry and the rise of alternative management fads and the owner-manager's inclination to look at financial matters, rather than a BSC, as a basis for the appropriation of surplus. The underlying public interest implication is that even though globalisation project seems to be functional and positive, it provokes contradictions and resistance when new accounting knowledge is diffused from the centre to the periphery.
