Abstract

Purpose

Creating active learning opportunities requires building a learning culture in which the instructor plays the role of a facilitator, leaving the ultimate responsibility of learning to the student. The question, however, is whether this is happening in practice. This study aims to answer this question through instructors' perceptions of active learning in a higher education institution in Oman.

Design/methodology/approach

The study participants were 85 instructors working for a private university in Oman. Data were collected by surveying these instructors' perceptions of active learning practice indicators, such as active teaching strategies and student educational practices. This was followed by interviewing a random sample of the same instructors (N = 10) to obtain a deeper understanding of their implementation of the active learning approach.

Findings

Data collected through the survey revealed that the shift from passive to active learning in higher education in Oman created a discrepancy between instructors' willingness to practice active learning and learners' unpreparedness to become autonomous learners. The follow-up interview findings confirmed this point, revealing instructors' negative perceptions of student participation and engagement in out-of-class activities.

Originality/value

This study is among the first to investigate the application of active learning in a higher education institution in Oman from the perspective of instructors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper outlines the active learning methods used to develop and deliver a sustainable business course to undergraduate students. Moreover, the paper aims to investigate the effect of the sustainable business course on the students’ engagement in sustainable consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

From a pedagogical perspective, the paper describes the active learning methods applied in a newly introduced sustainable business course via numerous distinctive assessment techniques. On the empirical front, the research investigates the impact of the sustainable business course on the students’ engagement in sustainable consumption. To test such impact, an online survey was distributed among students who completed the sustainable business course, and as a control group for comparison, students who did not take the course.

Findings

The research results indicate a positive relationship between completion of the sustainable business course and engagement in sustainable consumption. Furthermore, the data revealed that female students exhibited more engagement in sustainable consumption than male students.

Research limitations/implications

The study contributes to the literature on student-centered pedagogy, active learning techniques and the relationship between sustainable business education and engagement with sustainable consumption.

Practical implications

The study contributes to the literature on student-centered pedagogy, active learning techniques and the relationship between sustainable business education and engagement with sustainable consumption. Pedagogically, the nonconventional course curricula and assessment methods described in this study can be used as a reference by instructors aiming to integrate active and experiential teaching methods into their sustainable business curricula. For decision makers in higher education who are working in line with the global direction to achieve sustainability, this research provides preliminary evidence that students’ engagement with sustainability is influenced by their course curricula.

Originality/value

By depicting innovative approaches to teaching sustainability in business, the research enriches the field of sustainable business pedagogy which remains under-researched in many countries. Furthermore, the research goes further by investigating the effect of the course on students’ sustainable consumption. This acts as evidence of the effectiveness of teaching sustainable business in changing future leaders’ perspectives and priorities to include environmental and social aspects, which has become a global goal. Accordingly, the research has the potential to encourage more business schools to make sustainable business education mandatory.

Abstract

Purpose

Pedagogical and digital innovation in vocational education training (VET) is scarce as well as research on the subject. The pandemic may have prompted a modernization of VET that needs to be examined with a focus on the main subjects: the students. The purpose of this paper is to analyse students' perspectives on henceforth VET pedagogies. We aim to investigate students' perspectives and satisfaction regarding the didactic strategies and teaching modalities they experience to inform further trends in VET.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative and cross-sectional study was conducted, gathering the views of 460 Catalan VET students through a questionnaire. Data were analysed descriptively and applying the generalised linear model (GLM) mediation model to address the specific aims detailed below.

Findings

The findings show that the most frequent and preferred teaching strategies are lecturing and active learning, while situated learning is found to be less frequent and preferred. Face-to-face is the preferred teaching mode for all teaching strategies. The internship modality does not affect students' satisfaction with teaching strategies, while the professional brunch does.

Research limitations/implications

The limited responses gathered and the impact of the pandemic on the students' views limit the widespread applicability of the results. Future work must collect data from a broader sample and within a context of normality to determine current pedagogies and the use of digital technologies in VET.

Originality/value

Literature on VET pedagogies is scarce, and little is known about the predictable boost that the pandemic gave to the digitalisation and pedagogical modernisation of VET. Our study sheds light on the shift towards combined teaching strategies with a particular focus on active learning.

Abstract

Purpose

Educational design patterns offer practical strategies that can be shared and adapted to address problems in teaching and learning. This article explores how educational design patterns for connected learning at scale at an Australian university may be adapted to a Vietnamese higher education context.

Design/methodology/approach

12 educational design patterns that address the challenges of active learning and large teaching team management are discussed. The authors then critically reflect on their cross-cultural adaptation for the higher education context, from an Australian to a Vietnamese university.

Findings

Transitioning from passive to active learning strategies and effectively leading large teaching teams present similar challenges across our contexts. Educational design patterns, when dynamically adapted, may assist educators to teach skills that are critical for work and the future. Higher education institutions globally could enhance their practices by incorporating international best practice approaches to educational design.

Practical implications

The Connected Learning at Scale (CLaS) educational design patterns explored in this article offer solution-oriented strategies that promote a more active learning experience. This paper identifies adaptations for educators, especially those in Vietnamese higher education that respect traditional structures, cultural nuances and resource limitations in implementation.

Originality/value

Whilst educational design patterns are well-researched in the Western contexts, few studies analyse design patterns in an Asian, and in particular the Vietnamese context. More research is needed in the cross-cultural adaptation of educational design patterns that joins practice and theory.

Abstract

Purpose

In November 2022, the commercial company, OpenAI, launched ChatGPT. Since then, university students have rapidly become regular users of this artificial intelligence (AI) platform. One reason for this is the powerful capability of this generative AI tool to produce textual content, which in many cases, is almost indistinguishable from human-generated content. Another reason is that ChatGPT easily gives anyone access to knowledge. However, there is a problem as the vast majority of its users have no idea how this AI platform works and thus overlook the importance of thinking critically about information communicated in ChatGPT. While some call for banning this generative AI tool, this study aims to provide evidence that science classrooms can become scenarios where students find explicit, concrete, and realistic opportunities to critically evaluate scientific information generated by ChatGPT.

Design/methodology/approach

An intervention study was conducted with 55 students (26 females and 29 males, 17–24 years old) during a university Spanish-English bilingual science course taught within an active learning environment. The data consist of the written critiques of the students about Spanish-English bilingual scientific texts produced by ChatGPT.

Findings

Results indicate that the intervention had a positive effect on students’ abilities to construct sound arguments in Spanish and in English while judging the quality of scientific texts produced by this AI bot. Moreover, the findings suggest that the intervention enriched students’ skills to make improvements to texts produced by this generative AI tool.

Originality/value

The evidence provided in this study contributes to the exploration of possibilities to help students become critical users of ChatGPT.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a set of instrumental case studies for the context-based learning of BIM in the milieu of knowledge-based practice in the AEC industry. The study aimed to examine students' actions and perspectives in a simulated learning environment for real-world BIM processes. The core intent was to provide an in-depth understanding of strategic and functional BIM implementation by synthesizing a suggestive pedagogical framework based on context-based learning approaches.

Design/methodology/approach

Derived from context-based approaches and experiential learning methods such as role-play, problem-based and active learning, the study involved a set of doctoral-level case studies. In a qualitative research study, these cases were devised and organized around industry-focused simulations on various levels of BIM implementation strategies.

Findings

Results from the case studies and the student responses suggest that the comprehensive evaluation of real-world BIM implementation simulations facilitates a solid understanding of the value of BIM. The participation of industry professionals catalyzes the development of strategic and functional BIM competencies.

Originality/value

The study proposes a well-structured and replicable BIM learning framework based on context-based learning approaches. The novel framework is adaptive and flexible for BIM education. It can provide students with the necessary skills, strategic vision and professional competencies for innovative practices in the 21st-century AEC Industry. The simulative learning settings, including the evaluation rubrics and connected instructional methods, can be implemented and further developed for similar education efforts.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to explore the role of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) language model, in the field of management education. Specifically, the goal is to evaluate ChatGPT's effectiveness in facilitating active learning, promoting critical thinking, and fostering creativity among students. Additionally, the study seeks to investigate the potential of ChatGPT as a novel tool for enhancing traditional teaching methods within the framework of management education.

Design/methodology/approach

This research systematically explores ChatGPT's impact on student engagement in management education, considering AI integration benefits and limitations. Ethical dimensions, including information authenticity and bias, are scrutinized, alongside educators' roles in guiding AI-augmented learning.

Findings

The study reveals ChatGPT's effectiveness in engaging students, nurturing critical thinking, and fostering creativity in management education. Ethical concerns regarding information authenticity and bias are addressed. Insights from student and teacher perceptions offer valuable pedagogical implications for AI's role in management education.

Research limitations/implications

While this study offers valuable insights into the role of ChatGPT in management education, it is essential to acknowledge certain limitations. Firstly, the research primarily focuses on a specific AI model (ChatGPT), and findings may not be generalized to other AI language models. Additionally, the study relies on a specific set of educational contexts and may not fully capture the diverse landscape of management education globally. The duration of the research and the sample size could also impact the generalizability of the findings.

Practical implications

The findings of this study hold practical significance for educators and institutions engaged in management education. The integration of ChatGPT into teaching strategies has the potential to improve active learning, critical thinking, and creativity. Educators can utilize this AI tool to diversify instructional methods and accommodate diverse learning styles. However, the practical implementation of AI in the classroom necessitates meticulous consideration of infrastructure, training, and ongoing support for both educators and students. Furthermore, institutions should proactively tackle ethical concerns and establish guidelines for the responsible use of AI in education.

Social implications

The incorporation of AI, such as ChatGPT, in management education carries broader social implications. The study underscores the significance of addressing ethical concerns associated with AI, including issues related to information authenticity and bias. As AI becomes more widespread in educational settings, there is a necessity for societal discussions on the role of technology in shaping learning experiences. This research advocates for a thoughtful approach to AI adoption, emphasizing the importance of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the development and deployment of AI technologies within the educational sphere. The findings prompt reflections on the societal impact of AI-driven education and the potential consequences for students' skills, employment prospects, and societal values.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

Large classes pose challenges in managing different types of skills (e.g. maths, subject-specific knowledge, writing, confidence and communication), facilitating interactions, enabling active learning and providing timely feedback. This paper shares a design of a set of assessments for a large undergraduate economics course consisting of students from diverse cultural backgrounds. The benefits, challenges and learning experiences of students are analysed.

Design/methodology/approach

Students worked in groups to complete an assessment with several questions which would be useful as a revision for the individual assessment, the following week. Survey questionnaires with Likert-type questions and open-ended questions were used to analyse the learning and skill development that occurred because of the group work. Responses to the open-ended survey questions were coded and analysed by identifying the themes and categorising the various issues that emerged.

Findings

This assessment design developed group working skills, created opportunities to interact and enhanced learning. The analysis of the responses found that working with peers enabled the students to generate their own feedback, clear doubts and learn to solve problems. Effective communication, planning meetings and working around the diverse group members’ strengths and weaknesses are some graduate skills that are developed in this group assessment. The challenges were arranging meetings, finalising assessments, engagement of group members and unreliable technology. However, the students found ways to overcome these challenges.

Originality/value

This assessment design can be useful in higher education practice by introducing a mechanism for authentic collaborative practice. This paper adds to the literature on peer interactions and group work and enables effective learning at scale.

Abstract

Purpose

Resource mobilization and technology adoption by small firms are mainly studied separately, although considering them together is crucial for understanding how resources are accessed and mobilized to address uncertainty. Moreover, the authors know little about how small firms pursue new opportunities in a constantly changing environment. The purpose of this study is to investigate how small firms adopt technologies to engage different stakeholders and facilitate the access and mobilization of key resources in the opportunity co-creation process.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applied a qualitative case study method and conducted 14 interviews with co-founders or top managers of five small firms in Iran.

Findings

The findings reveal how small firms adopt technologies to access and mobilize social, human, psychological and financial resources in a highly uncertain environment to co-create new opportunities.

Research limitations/implications

First, the study applies a cross-sectional approach. Therefore, it does not capture longitudinal aspects that might impact resource mobilization and technology adoption over time. Second, the selected five case firms represent rather successful firms, each of which adopted different technologies to challenge the established structure of the market. That is, this study did not focus on unsuccessful cases that would enrich the theory further.

Originality/value

This study reveals how small firms adopt new technologies to mobilize resources and co-create opportunities in highly uncertain environments. It reveals that small firms employ technology adoption strategies to utilize operant resources and accelerate operand resource mobilization. Active learning plays a critical role in this process.

Purpose

The purpose of the article “Nurturing Human Intelligence in the Age of AI: Rethinking Education for the Future” is to explore the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on education and to emphasize the need for a fundamental shift in current education systems. The article aims to provide practitioners with actionable insights on how to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of AI in education while preparing young people for their crucial role as the workforce of tomorrow. It seeks to highlight the potential of AI to revolutionize education while also acknowledging the importance of preserving the unique human touch in the learning process.

Design/methodology/approach

This article explores the disruptive impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on education and emphasizes the need for a fundamental shift in current education systems to prepare young people for an AI-driven future. It highlights the potential of AI to revolutionize education through personalized learning experiences, enhanced teacher professional development and automation of administrative tasks while acknowledging the importance of approaching AI implementation with caution and preserving the unique human touch in education. The article argues for a shift in focus from rote learning to fostering critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills, emphasizing the development of Learning Mastery and Knowledge Mastery. It underscores the vital role of educators in leveraging AI technologies and preparing young people for the future, along with the need for responsive educational policies and curriculum frameworks that integrate AI literacy and ethical considerations. The article concludes by calling for reimagining the schooling system, prioritizing high-level thinking and nurturing the unique capabilities of human intelligence. The future of education lies in harnessing the power of AI while celebrating and cultivating distinctively human qualities. Educational practitioners play a crucial role in shaping this future by bridging the gap between research and practice, ensuring a positive and prosperous future for society in an AI-driven world.

(7) Educational policies should encourage innovation and collaboration between educational institutions, government bodies and industry stakeholders to ensure responsiveness to the rapidly evolving landscape of AI in education. The article’s exploration of Learning Mastery and Knowledge Mastery as key concepts in preparing students for an AI-driven future adds originality to the discussion. Overall, the article presents a thought-provoking and original viewpoint on the future of education in the age of AI.
