Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify influential workplace engagement interventions that were initiated by managers over several years as revealed in many studies. Also, an action learning guide is offered for an individual manager to use such interventions with the employee in shaping activities to assist employee learning and performance improvement which may result in greater workplace engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

The first step was to examine the research literature on: the meaning of workplace engagement along with theory bases for it, the framework for stimulating employee engagement and information about action learning in the workplace. Second, was the identification of manager/organization interventions found to result in employee assessment of their own positive growth in workplace engagement? Third, we offer a practical, action learning approach.

Findings

An action guide is presented as an example of a method to assist a manager working with, in this case, a single employee. The guide is grounded on empirical research, mostly meta-analyses, and reflects positively assessed workplace engagement interventions.

Originality/value

In the performance management, human resources and training domains there is limited research and/or examples of practical guides for managers to use to link guidance with efforts to apply specific interventions to support employee workplace engagement. This paper provides the manager with a path to assist employees.

Abstract

Coronavirus illness is an irresistible infection instigated by a newfound coronavirus. Social distancing was identified as the most effective preventive measure, and it has shifted the teaching to online mode. The present study explored the various perceptions held by students while attending the classes during COVID-19. Primary data have been obtained for the fulfillment of the objective of the study. The data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. It was exhibited that students specified that online teaching provides real-world skills followed by financial benefits, active learning, recorded lectures, comfortable, ease of access, safe, flexible timings, interactive, and build self-confidence. However, various challenges in online classes were less interaction, technical issues, network issues, lack of self-discipline, social isolation, family distractions, difficult e-learning tools, etc. Logit regression provided that willingness to attend online classes in post COVID-19 was associated with age, gender, IT skills, prior experience, and location. Application of e-learning posed several challenges and possibilities throughout the entire field of education throughout the pandemic. The study suggested the need to address the various challenges faced by the students on immediate basis. It was recommended that training programs can help to prepare the students to take the benefits of digital education platforms.

Abstract

Purpose

The idea of using positive humor as a managerial tool is gaining traction in both academia and organizations. The purpose of this paper is to test whether supervisors' use of positive humor in organizations in different perceived cultures (hierarchical, clan, market and adhocracy) influences employees' in-role and extra role performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample includes 317 clinical and non-clinical employees in public hospitals in Palermo, Italy. Hypotheses are tested using structural equation modeling.

Findings

Results indicate that supervisor positive humor has a direct relationship with employee in-role and extra-role performance. Also, supervisor positive humor has a moderating impact on the relationship between organizational culture and in-role and extra-role performance. Moderating effect of supervisor humor have a greater impact on extra-role performance towards individuals or organizational citizenship behavior toward individuals (OCBI).

Research limitations/implications

The first limitation is that this study examines only positive or adaptive kinds of leader humor; negative or maladaptive humor is not included. A further limitation is the role of social (national) organizational culture in our construct. It is claimed that, specific components of national organizational culture are more significant compared with others and that some national organizational cultures are more vital to performance in one part of the organization compared to others (Nazarian et al., 2017). Hofstede's original four dimensions of national culture: power distance, individualism, uncertainty avoidance and masculinity/femininity could be analyzed separately to investigate the role of each variable on the study’s construct.

Practical implications

As Romero and Cruthirds (2006) mentioned, organizations can establish “humor-training seminars” to make the supervisor and team members aware of the benefits of humor in the workplace. For instance, subjects such as appropriate types of humor, gender and ethical differences in appreciating the humor, and matching the humor style with the specific organizational outcome can be discussed. To understand and apply appropriate organizational culture in public organizations, it is beneficial to know which types of culture encourage employee in-role/extra-role performance. This study compared the consequences of the specific dominant culture in relation to the objective of the organization. However, one solution does not fit all. Sometimes managers inevitably follow trends in their industries without noticing other variables (Mason, 2007).

Social implications

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to uncover the constraints of automation and the affordances of augmentation related to implementing artificial intelligence (AI)-powered systems across different task types: mechanical, thinking and feeling.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative study involving 45 interviews with various stakeholders in artistic gymnastics, for which AI-powered systems for the judging process are currently developed and tested. Stakeholders include judges, gymnasts, coaches and a technology vendor.

Findings

We identify perceived constraints of automation, such as too much mechanization, preciseness and inability of the system to evaluate artistry or to provide human interaction. Moreover, we find that the complexity and impreciseness of the rules prevent automation. In addition, we identify affordances of augmentation such as speedier, fault-less, more accurate and objective evaluation. Moreover, augmentation affords to provide an explanation, which in turn may decrease the number of decision disputes.

Research limitations/implications

While the unique context of our study is revealing, the generalizability of our specific findings still needs to be established. However, the approach of considering task types is readily applicable in other contexts.

Practical implications

Our research provides useful insights for organizations that consider implementing AI for evaluation in terms of possible constraints, risks and implications of automation for the organizational practices and human agents while suggesting augmented AI-human work as a more beneficial approach in the long term.

Originality/value

Our granular approach provides a novel point of view on AI implementation, as our findings challenge the notion of full automation of mechanical and partial automation of thinking tasks. Therefore, we put forward augmentation as the most viable AI implementation approach. In addition, we developed a rich understanding of the perception of various stakeholders with a similar institutional background, which responds to recent calls in socio-technical research.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary aim of this paper is to illuminate the critical issue of the degree awarding gap in the UK, which significantly impacts students from lower socio-economic backgrounds and minority groups. By conducting a systematic review of existing literature following the PRISMA protocol, this study seeks to uncover the complex web of explanatory factors that mediate the relationship between contextual indicators, institutional culture, and degree awarding disparities. Addressing this gap is vital for promoting social justice, enhancing the economy, safeguarding the reputation of UK universities, and adhering to legal responsibilities. This paper endeavours to provide a comprehensive understanding of the underlying causes of degree awarding gaps and offer evidence-based recommendations for the higher education sector to mitigate these disparities.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a systematic review design, adhering to the PRISMA protocol, to meticulously analyse the existing body of literature concerning the degree awarding gap in UK higher education. By systematically gathering, evaluating, and synthesizing relevant studies, the review aims to identify and understand the multifaceted factors mediating the link between contextual indicators, institutional culture, and the disparities observed in degree awarding. This methodological approach ensures a rigorous and transparent examination of the literature, enabling the identification of both the breadth and depth of research on the topic. Through this design, the paper aspires to uncover nuanced insights into the mechanisms driving degree awarding gaps.

Findings

The review’s findings reveal that degree awarding gaps in UK universities are influenced by a constellation of factors, highlighting the complexity of this issue. Key among these are unconscious bias, limited student engagement opportunities with academic staff, institutional racism, inadequate support systems, and a scarcity of social and cultural capital. These factors collectively contribute to significant disparities in degree outcomes, disproportionately disadvantaging students from lower socio-economic backgrounds and minority groups. The evidence suggests that institutional practices and culture play a pivotal role in either exacerbating or alleviating these disparities, indicating the need for targeted interventions to address the root causes of degree awarding gaps.

Research limitations/implications

One strength of conducting a systematic review is its rigorous and meticulous nature, which ensures that the process is carefully planned and executed. This comprehensive approach allows for the elimination of biases, as the review systematically gathers and analyses existing literature on the topic. By adhering to a structured methodology, the systematic review enhances the validity and reliability of the findings, providing a robust and unbiased synthesis of the available evidence. This strength lends credibility to the research and reinforces the confidence in the conclusions drawn from the review.

Practical implications

The practical implications arising from this information indicate that universities need to address the identified issues directly by implementing supportive strategies and interventions. By doing so, they can create a learning environment that is more inclusive and equitable, allowing all students to unlock their full potential. This may involve measures such as raising awareness about unconscious bias, promoting engagement between academic staff and students, implementing anti-racist policies, establishing comprehensive support systems, and actively fostering social and cultural capital. Such practical actions will contribute to reducing the degree awarding gaps and promoting equal opportunities for all students, ultimately leading to a more equitable and successful educational experience.

Social implications

The social implications derived from this information are significant. By implementing supportive strategies and interventions to address the identified issues, universities can contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable learning environment. This has the potential to have a transformative impact on society by providing equal opportunities for all students to unlock their full potential. By raising awareness about unconscious bias and implementing anti-racist policies, universities can foster a more diverse and inclusive community. Promoting engagement between academic staff and students and establishing comprehensive support systems can enhance social cohesion and create a sense of belonging. Ultimately, these efforts can lead to reduced degree awarding gaps and contribute to a more equitable and successful educational experience, positively influencing broader social equality and cohesion.

Originality/value

This paper contributes significantly to the literature by offering a comprehensive, systematic review of the factors contributing to the degree awarding gap in UK higher education, highlighting its originality and value. By focusing on the interplay between contextual indicators, institutional culture, and degree awarding disparities, the study provides novel insights into how these dynamics contribute to educational inequities. Furthermore, the evidence-based recommendations for institutional interventions presented in this paper furnish the higher education sector with actionable strategies to foster a more inclusive and equitable learning environment. This work not only advances academic understanding of degree awarding gaps but also offers practical value to policymakers and educational institutions aiming to enhance social justice in higher education.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the experiences of non-offending partners (NOPs) of men who perpetrated contact and non-contact sexual offences.

Design/methodology/approach

In-depth semi-structured interviews were carried out with eight women and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Findings

Findings yielded two superordinate themes, eight subordinate themes and an overarching theme. The first superordinate theme “Paying for their Husband’s Transgressions” captured many ways in which the women’s lives were impacted by their husbands offending. The second superordinate theme “Navigating the Darkness” encompassed the women’s experiences of trying to adapt to their new lives. The overarching theme “A Contaminated Life” pertained to the shared experiences of the women who all described encountering instant and profound consequences. This research highlighted the need for immediate signposting to support services for NOPs. The value of a humanistic counselling approach paired with forensic expertise was also identified. Future research with cross-cultural samples and same sex-couples would enrich the current understanding of this experience.

Originality/value

Qualitative research on the experiences of NOPs of men who perpetrated sexual offences is sparse. Furthermore, existing research focuses on the experiences of women who’s own children were abused, with the partners of men who have perpetrated extra-familial or non-contact offenses remaining largely neglected.

Abstract

Purpose

Workplace incivility (WI) has been extensively studied. However, less is known about how WI spills over into employees' lives. Building on the work-home resources model, the authors develop a conceptual model investigating work-family enrichment (WFE) as the mediator between WI and subjective well-being (SWB) and coping strategies as the moderator of this indirect relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were gathered from 266 frontline employees (FLEs) working in different banks in Vietnam, using a convenience sampling technique. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was employed.

Findings

The results show that coworker incivility (COWI) predicts a lower level of WFE, which in turn is associated with SWB, while supervisor incivility is not. The authors also found that coping strategies moderate the adverse influence of COWI on employees' WFE.

Originality/value

Although much research has been conducted on the predictors of SWB, little is known about how WI and WFE together impact SWB, and insight into how to buffer the effects of WI are also lacking. This study thus fills a gap in the literature. Implications for theory, practice and future research are discussed.

Purpose

Analyst team forecasts are the most frequent form of earnings expectations available to investors, with teams issuing more than 70% of research reports in 2016. Prior research provides differing evidence on whether analyst teams issue higher or lower quality forecasts than individual analysts.

Design/methodology/approach

I use a sample of more than 17,000 hand-collected analyst reports representing 7,586 forecasts from 89 companies in three industries from 1994–2005.

Findings

I document that analyst teams benefit from an assembly bonus, and issue more accurate forecasts than individual analysts only in time periods when teams would be expected to benefit from an assembly bonus.

Practical implications

I outline multiple factors within the control of brokerage houses that impact teams’ relative forecast quality, such as the number of members in the team, how long the team has worked as a unit and the costliness of integrating information when forming a forecast.

Originality/value

Given the preponderance of analyst teams and the strength of market reaction to their forecasts, it is valuable to document factors both in the past and present likely to affect analyst teams’ relative forecast accuracy.

Abstract

Purpose

Empirical evidence of the value creation process through which internationalizing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) develop international branding capability (IBC) to build a value-creating brand in international markets is incomplete. This research aims to investigate a theoretical framework for the determinants and outcomes of IBC in internationalizing SMEs.

Design/methodology/approach

Using surveys of 519 internationalizing SMEs, this research empirically verified the antecedents to and effects of IBC on SMEs’ value creation, which thus translates into superior performance. Furthermore, this research explores contextual factors influencing the value creation process in SME internationalization.

Findings

Findings show that SMEs with strong international marketing resource orchestration (IMRO) and relational capability are more competent in developing IBC, which assists resource-constrained SMEs to create value, as manifested through international brand equity (IBE) and improved international performance. Moreover, environmental uncertainty enhances the interplay between IMRO, relational capability, and IBC, while new entrant pressure strengthens the relationship between IBC and IBE, and price competition pressure magnifies the impact of IBE on international performance.

Originality/value

Our study pioneers conceptualization of the value creation process through which SMEs develop IBC to build value-creating brands in international markets, overcoming the liabilities of smallness and outsidership.
