Abstract

Purpose

To explore the fusion of dust particles and of polymers in a viscous liquid is the main purpose of this article. Newtonian fluid as a base fluid is considered and the mutual presence of polymers and dusty bodies is investigated. It discusses the steady laminar flow and heat transportation of a polymeric dusty liquid induced by a uniformly heated, penetrable and stretchable surface inside the boundary layer.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical system incorporates separate equations of energy and momentum for dusty bodies and for fluid. The classical Oldroyd-B model is chosen for exploring polymer presence. For the fluid phase, this model adds another stress to the conservation law of momentum. Appropriate similarity variables are introduced to transform the system of partial differential equations (PDEs) into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The problem is solved by introducing a numerical iterative procedure which turned out to be fastly converging.

Findings

Expeditious changes inside the boundary layer cause polymers to deform. No changes outside the boundary layer are noticed on account of polymer stretching. The dependence of heat transfer rate and skin friction on the parameter of polymer concentration and Weissenberg number is analyzed and displayed graphically against interaction parameters for temperature and velocity, dust particles’ mass concentration, Eckert and Prandtl numbers. Combining effects of polymers and dust particles cause skin friction to decrease and heat transfer rate to increase. Increasing values of interaction parameter for velocity, dust particles’ mass concentration and Eckert number reduces the drag coefficient and local Nusselt number. On the other hand, the Prandtl number and interaction parameter of temperature magnify the heat flux at the wall.

Research limitations/implications

This article studies the infinite extensibility of polymers. FENE and FENE-P models can be used to investigate the polymer presence in dusty fluids in the future.

Originality/value

In this article, the authors’ aim is to study the combined presence of polymers and dusty bodies. Keeping the existing literature in view, this type of fusion is not studied yet. Polymer inclusion in a viscous dusty fluid is studied and the behavior of fluid flow and heat transportation is investigated within the boundary layer over a permeable linearly stretching sheet.

Abstract

This research takes Taijiang National Park (TNP) tourists as the study population while gathering the survey data via an online questionnaire. For the data analyses, it uses the importance–performance analysis (IPA) and the Kano two-dimensional quality model to evaluate the tourist satisfaction of TNP. Specifically, it considers the importance of service quality, classifies its service quality attributes, and suggests the priority for service improvement, rendering the TNP valuable reference points to realign service strategies. The study shows that the service quality attributes related to service personnel are the priority item to be improved, which could eventually enhance tourist satisfaction. In addition, brand differentiation could be achieved by improving the attractive quality items identified in this study to enhance tourist loyalty.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to deepen the understanding of the challenges and implications entailed by deploying mobile clinics in conflict zones to reach populations affected by violence and cut off from health-care services.

Design/methodology/approach

This research combines an integrated literature review and an instrumental case study. The literature review comprises two targeted reviews to provide insights: one on conflict zones and one on mobile clinics. The case study describes the process and challenges faced throughout a mobile clinic deployment during and after the Iraq War. The data was gathered using mixed methods over a two-year period (2017–2018).

Findings

Armed conflicts directly impact the populations’ health and access to health care. Mobile clinic deployments are often used and recommended to provide health-care access to vulnerable populations cut off from health-care services. However, there is a dearth of peer-reviewed literature documenting decision support tools for mobile clinic deployments.

Originality/value

This study highlights the gaps in the literature and provides direction for future research to support the development of valuable insights and decision support tools for practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on social network and information diffusion theories, the authors study the impact of the structural characteristics of a seller’s local social network on her promotion effectiveness in social commerce.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors define a local social network as one formed by a focal seller, her directly connected users and all links among these users. Using data from a large social commerce website in China, the authors build econometric models to investigate how the density, grouping and centralization of local social networks affect the number of likes received by products posted by sellers.

Findings

Local social networks with low density, grouping and centralization are associated with more likes on sellers’ posted products. The negative effects of grouping and centralization are reduced when density is high.

Originality/value

The paper deepens the understanding of the determinants of social commerce success from a network structure perspective. In particular, it draws attention to the role of sellers’ local social networks, forming a foundation for future research on social commerce.

Abstract

Purpose

Proper performance assessment of residential building renovation is crucial to sustainable urban development. However, a comprehensive review of the literature in this research domain is lacking. This study aims to uncover the study trend, research hotspots, prominent contributors, research gaps and directions in this field.

Design/methodology/approach

With a hybrid review approach adopted, relevant literature was examined in three stages. In Stage 1, literature retrieved from Scopus was screened for their relevance to the study topic. In Stage 2, bibliographic data of the shortlisted literature underwent scientometric analyses by the VOSviewer software. Finally, an in-depth qualitative review was made on the key literature.

Findings

The research hotspots in performance assessment of residential building renovation were found: energy efficiency, sustainability, thermal comfort and life cycle assessment. After the qualitative review, the following research gaps and future directions were unveiled: (1) assessments of retrofits incorporating renewable energy and energy storage systems; (2) evaluation of policy options and financial incentives to overcome financial constraints; (3) establishment of reliable embodied energy and carbon datasets; (4) indoor environment assessment concerning requirements of COVID-19 prevention and involvement of water quality, acoustic insulation and daylighting indicators; and (5) holistic decision-making model concerning residents' intentions and safety, health, well-being and social indicators.

Originality/value

Pioneered in providing the first comprehensive picture of the assessment studies on residential building renovations, this study contributes to offering directions for future studies and insights conducive to making rational decisions for residential building renovations.

Abstract

Purpose

Road freight transportation companies need to take advantage of information and communication technologies to develop capabilities. This study proposes a framework to guide road freight transportation companies to achieve data visibility in their operations by developing such capabilities. By proposing this framework, this research contributes to literature and practice, highlighting the capabilities and the respective supporting technologies for improved data visibility in road freight transportation.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-method approach is used to develop the framework, considering three methodological steps. In phase 1, the capabilities are identified in the literature and validated by experts. In phase 2, an empirical assessment of cause–effect relationships between capabilities is performed using a multiple case study and DEMATEL. Lastly, in phase 3, an analysis of the cause model and significant associations is conducted to enable the development of the framework. In addition, the proposed framework was validated by the experts interviewed.

Findings

The results provide a framework that explains the link between the technology-enabled data visibility capabilities in road freight transportation operations. In addition, a pathway was established that road freight transportation companies could follow to achieve data visibility in their operations by developing such capabilities.

Originality/value

This work develops the first framework that provides a path for data visibility in road freight transportation operations from adopting certain technologies. The insights are compelling for researchers and practitioners to optimize the decision-making process for adopting technologies and developing capabilities related to data visibility.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent archiving and curatorial practices took advantage of the advancement in digital technologies, creating immersive and interactive experiences to emphasize the plurality of memory materials, encourage personalized sense-making and extract, manage and share the ever-growing surrounding knowledge. Audiovisual (AV) content, with its growing importance and popularity, is less explored on that end than texts and images. This paper examines the trend of datafication in AV archives and answers the critical question, “What to extract from AV materials and why?”.

Design/methodology/approach

This study roots in a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of digital methods and curatorial practices in AV archives. The thinking model for mapping AV archive data to purposes is based on pre-existing models for understanding multimedia content and metadata standards.

Findings

The thinking model connects AV content descriptors (data perspective) and purposes (curatorial perspective) and provides a theoretical map of how information extracted from AV archives should be fused and embedded for memory institutions. The model is constructed by looking into the three broad dimensions of audiovisual content – archival, affective and aesthetic, social and historical.

Originality/value

This paper contributes uniquely to the intersection of computational archives, audiovisual content and public sense-making experiences. It provides updates and insights to work towards datafied AV archives and cope with the increasing needs in the sense-making end using AV archives.

Abstract

Purpose

Organizations are continually improving their practices to improve operational performance. They already employ Lean Manufacturing techniques (LM) to reduce unnecessary waste. Industry 4.0 techniques enhance operational performance in association with LM. Despite the proven benefits of LM principles and the advancements offered by Industry 4.0 technologies, many organizations struggle to integrate these approaches effectively. This research paper explores how LM principles can be combined with Industry 4.0 technologies to provide valuable guidance for businesses looking to adopt lean automation strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review on LM and Industry 4.0 was done to investigate the possible technical integration of both methods. Ninety-two articles are extracted systematically from the Scopus and Web of Science databases. This study states a systematic literature review, including quantitative analysis of bibliographic networks and cluster analysis, to identify emergent ideas and their further implementation.

Findings

The research findings highlight the positive impact of integrating lean production with Industry 4.0 techniques, benefiting organizations in achieving their goals. A lean automation integration framework is proposed based on the literature review and the findings.

Practical implications

This study provides industry administrators and practitioners valuable guidance for enhancing organizational productivity. These implications can provide businesses with competitive advantages, enhance customer satisfaction, and enable them to adapt to the dynamic demands of the contemporary business environment.

Originality/value

This literature review study has substantially contributed to the technological integration of lean and Industry 4.0. The work has also identified potential emerging areas that warrant further research.

Abstract

Purpose

Music sentiment analysis helps to promote the diversification of music information retrieval methods. Traditional music emotion classification tasks suffer from high manual workload and low classification accuracy caused by difficulty in feature extraction and inaccurate manual determination of hyperparameter. In this paper, the authors propose an optimized convolution neural network-random forest (CNN-RF) model for music sentiment classification which is capable of optimizing the manually selected hyperparameters to improve the accuracy of music sentiment classification and reduce labor costs and human classification errors.

Design/methodology/approach

A CNN-RF music sentiment classification model is designed based on quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO). First, the audio data are transformed into a Mel spectrogram, and feature extraction is conducted by a CNN. Second, the music features extracted are processed by RF algorithm to complete a preliminary emotion classification. Finally, to select the suitable hyperparameters for a CNN, the QPSO algorithm is adopted to extract the best hyperparameters and obtain the final classification results.

Findings

The model has gone through experimental validations and achieved a classification accuracy of 97 per cent for different sentiment categories with shortened training time. The proposed method with QPSO achieved 1.2 and 1.6 per cent higher accuracy than that with particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm, respectively. The proposed model had great potential for music sentiment classification.

Originality/value

The dual contribution of this work comprises the proposed model which integrated two deep learning models and the introduction of a QPSO into model optimization. With these two innovations, the efficiency and accuracy of music emotion recognition and classification have been significantly improved.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the critical elements that contribute to the effective adoption of educational digital resources (EDRs) in schools, with a focus on school principals and their leadership, from a strategic pedagogical standpoint.

Design/methodology/approach

Using survey data from 200 school principals, measurement and structure models are tested through structural equation modeling to quantify the impact between constructs.

Findings

The findings indicate that the most important factor influencing how effectively schools are transforming digitally is how beneficial school principals believe EDRs to be. Other important elements include the environment of the school, the technical assistance and service provided for the EDRs, and the professional and personal background of the principal.

Practical implications

Principals should be a fundamental component of educational plans for digital transformation, considering things like their age, leadership and teaching experience. Other components include contextual elements like school size, complexity and digital culture. A school principal's ability to promote an open dialogue – that enables educational communities to view the integration of EDRs into pedagogical models as an opportunity to improve outcomes – can assist a digital culture transition, rather than via the principal's authority or bureaucratic influence.

Originality/value

This research is among the pioneer to study the role of school principals in the UAE towards understanding the direction for digital transformation.
