Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to investigate the influence of green human resource management (HRM), with analysis and description of job position, recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment and rewards on sustainability with the resource-based view (RBV) theory as underlying theory. The extent to which absorptive capacity strengthened the “green HRM-sustainability” link as a buffering mechanism was also examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The study model was tested with empirical data gathered from 253 Indonesian oil and gas firms. The elicited data were analysed using structural equation modelling using partial least squares (PLS).

Findings

Resultantly, the (i) analysis and description of job position and (ii) recruitment positively influenced sustainability. Absorptive capacity also influenced the strength of the moderated relationship between (i) recruitment and (ii) training and sustainability.

Originality/value

As far as we know, this is the first study which assigned the moderator role of absorptive capacity in a relationship between green HRM and sustainability in oil and gas firms in Indonesia. Notably, the theoretical and practical implications of applying the empirical outcomes to the oil and gas sector were extensively discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study develops and tests a model that explores how human capital impacts micro-business performance through the sequential mediation of new technology adoption and entrepreneurial bricolage.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 508 women entrepreneurs engaged in micro-businesses in Malaysia. This study used partial least squares structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses.

Findings

This study demonstrates the significant impact of human capital on micro-business performance. It establishes a sequential mediation model in which technology adoption and entrepreneurial bricolage mediate the nexus of human capital–micro-business performance.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the theory by innovatively integrating human capital, new technology adoption, entrepreneurial bricolage, and microbusiness performance, drawing on the resource-based view and human capital theory. However, its cross-sectional nature limits causal inference, and focusing solely on women entrepreneurs in Malaysian micro-businesses may constrain novelty. Additionally, the reliance on self-reported data introduces bias, emphasizing the need for future research.

Practical implications

Fostering entrepreneurial bricolage and embracing technology adoption can enhance performance. Business managers can optimize strategies by promoting continuous learning, innovative problem-solving, and technological advancements.

Social implications

This study highlights the potential social and economic impacts of supporting women-owned micro-businesses in Malaysia. Policymakers can promote economic growth, employment, and community well-being by emphasizing innovation, human capital development, and technology adoption in Malaysia’s diverse ethnic contexts.

Originality/value

This study introduces a distinctive serial mediation framework to understand the impact of human capital on micro-business performance. It explores mediation dynamics, extends the knowledge of serial mediation in the human capital-performance relationship of microbusinesses, and contributes to the unexplored roles of technology adoption and entrepreneurial bricolage in Malaysian micro-businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the mediating role of innovation capability in the relationship between digital transformation strategy and innovation performance of microfinance institutions in Ethiopia.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were collected from 12 microfinance institutions in Ethiopia through self-administered questionnaires. Statistical analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling with AMOS and SPSS. Covariance-based structural equation modeling was used to test the study hypotheses.

Findings

Digital transformation strategy indicators such as (digitization vision, information technology integration, information technology agility and flexibility of information technology) directly affect innovation performance. The innovation capability mediates the relationship between digital transformation strategy indicator (information technology agility) and innovation performance. However, innovation capability does not have mediation effect in the relationship between digital transformation strategy remaining indicators (digitization vision, information technology flexibility and information technology integration) and innovation performance.

Originality/value

The study affirmed the importance of dynamic capability theory and presents noteworthy conclusions applicable to managers, stakeholders, and policymakers. It illuminates how innovation capability serves as a crucial link between digital transformation strategies and innovation performance within microfinance institutions in Ethiopia. This research enhances the current understanding of innovation capability, digital transformation strategy and innovation performance in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore how bundling knowledge resources (i.e. knowledge integration mechanisms [KIMs]) and digital resources (i.e. big data-powered artificial intelligence [BDAI]) can enhance supply chain visibility (SCV) capabilities for implementing just-in-case (JIC) practices.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis of survey data from Chinese manufacturers was conducted to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The results reveal a significant positive effect of KIMs on BDAI, as well as positive effects of both BDAI and KIMs on SCV. Furthermore, the results suggest that SCV partially mediates the KIMs–JIC relationship and fully mediates the BDAI–JIC relationship.

Originality/value

This study advances the digital SC and inventory management literature by proposing and empirically testing a digital JIC model that explores how to bundle knowledge and digital resources into SC capabilities for managing JIC inventory in uncertain and digital times.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the mechanism by which intellectual capital (IC) [i.e. human capital (HC), structural capital (SC) and relational capital (RC)] influences small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) efficiency in the presence of business model innovation (BMI) as a mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection is conducted through a survey completed by 319 owners and top managers of SMEs operating in the manufacturing sector in three cities in Pakistan. A simple random sampling method is used. A structural equation modeling artificial neural network (SEM-ANN)-based approach is applied to evaluate the role of IC predictors. The mediation results are authenticated using PROCESS.

Findings

The results indicate that HC, SC and RC significantly influence SME efficiency and BMI. Furthermore, BMI fully mediates the relationship between human capital and SME efficiency, while partially mediating the relationship between structural capital and SME efficiency, as well as between SC and SME efficiency.

Originality/value

This study pioneers research into the link between IC and SME efficiency. It contributes to the literature by defining IC as an antecedent of SME efficiency. It further contributes to the literature by defining IC as an antecedent and BMI as an intervening variable of SME efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to investigate technological and innovation orientation contribution to the development and sustainability of the industrial sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors gathered the perspectives of many experts who were aware enough of their company’s technical and innovation orientations to participate in this study to understand how technology and innovation orientations may affect sustainability and development. These people included the company managers, accounting department heads, IT department workers and employees in the innovation department. This was accomplished by distributing a thorough questionnaire intended to gather their perspectives.

Findings

The study’s results highlight the significant positive relationship between technological and innovation orientation. Moreover, the study demonstrates that both technological and innovation orientation were found to positively impact the sustainability and development of the industrial sector.

Practical implications

This study provides practical insights for policymakers, industrial managers and innovation supporters in Jordan. Managers can use these insights to reassess technology adoption and innovation strategies. Additionally, investing in staff skills and technology readiness can boost efficiency, competitiveness and long-term growth.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is pioneering research to shed light on the connection between technological orientation, innovation orientation and sustainability and development in the industrial sector, providing valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners alike.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to analyze the existing literature available on corporate strategy and capital structure with the help of a bibliometric analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 133 studies indexed in the Scopus database over the period from 1979 to 2024 are included and analyzed using the Biblioshiny package in RStudio along with VOSviewer for network visualization. Additionally, this study used biblioMagika and OpenRefine to harmonize and clean the data.

Findings

This study identified the leading contributors in terms of countries, authors, sources and documents and used various analysis techniques. The USA, Canada and the UK exhibited the most significant level of contribution. Furthermore, Bradford’s Law is applicable to the results of this study. The bibliographic coupling resulted in the five clusters indicating emerging themes in the field.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s findings will contribute to the academic landscape by providing an exhaustive examination of the concerned research field and will guide potential researchers for future research avenues. This study will also highlight the need for managers and policymakers to factor in diverse corporate strategies when shaping organization’s capital structures.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study represents the first attempt to map the landscape of this field through the presentation of insights derived from bibliometric analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the present paper is to analyse the impact of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and customer orientation (Co.) on innovation in the restaurant industry, as well as how innovation also positively influences financial and market performance. Likewise, it is analysed whether human capital (HC) and competitive strategy (CS) have a moderating effect between innovation and performance.

Design/methodology/approach

To reach the stated goals, a survey was applied to 129 entrepreneurs in the restaurant industry in Baja California, Mexico and using partial least squares structural equation modelling, the research hypotheses were verified.

Findings

Results indicate that EO and Co positively influence innovation, which also furthers better financial and market firm performance; however, no moderating effect was found for HC nor CS.

Practical implications

The findings allow contributing from a practical-entrepreneurial standpoint, as it raises awareness about the importance of developing strategies that allow efficiently gaining knowledge to encourage a culture in the restaurant industry focused on EO and Co, which, for their part, will boost the design and implementation of innovations.

Social implications

The paper contributes to understanding the behaviour of HC and CS, which may have an influence or not, depending on the role they have within a system.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to raising awareness of the importance of developing strategies that allow efficient knowledge to foster a culture in the restaurant industry focused on entrepreneurship and clientele.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to businesses worldwide, compelling them to swiftly adapt their strategies to the evolving landscape. This study explores the relationships between uncertainty shocks (i.e. COVID-19), strategic responses, and performance outcomes, with a specific focus on general and green strategic responses.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing from a sample of sustainability-oriented exporters in different industries, we examine the impact of these responses on market, financial, and operation performance by gathering data from 212 managers in Vietnam – an emerging country, and then applying PLS-SEM for analysis.

Findings

Our findings reveal that sustainability-oriented exporters have exhibited adaptability by adopting general and green strategic responses in the face of the pandemic’s disruptions. Green strategic responses positively influence market, financial, and operational performance, underscoring the strategic significance of integrating sustainability considerations. However, while general strategic responses show alignment with uncertainty risks, they just impact operational performance, but do not significantly influence market and financial outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should consider diversifying the sample to encompass a wider range of firm types and geographical locations to enhance the external validity of the results. In addition, the study does not extensively explore the mechanisms that mediate or moderate the relationships between uncertainty shocks, strategic responses, and performance outcomes.

Practical implications

The study’s implications guide practitioners toward agile responses that balance adaptability, sustainability, and performance. This study provides timely insights for sustainability-oriented firms, managers, policymakers, and researchers aiming to navigate disruptions effectively and sustainably.

Originality/value

These findings contribute to the fields of strategic management and sustainability by emphasizing the complexities of strategic responses during uncertainty shocks, and disruptions and the pivotal role of sustainability-driven strategies in enhancing performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a focused review of international business (IB) literature on research and development (R&D) internationalization, assessing the progress and proposing future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

Total 167 peer-reviewed articles from IB journals (following the ABS list 2021 from 4* to 2) published between 1996 and 2022 are critically reviewed using a science-mapping approach. This paper used Bibliometrix R-package to analyze the retrieved bibliometric data. Additionally, a strategic diagram was developed to comprehend the maturity stage of various R&D internationalization concepts.

Findings

Most studies on R&D internationalization are influenced by perspectives from advanced-economy multinational enterprises (AMNEs), while perspectives from emerging-economy multinational enterprises (EMNEs) are underrepresented. Considering the characteristics of emerging economies, firms from these locations might embark on and develop their R&D internationalization strategies differently. Investigating the emerging economy perspectives will enrich the understanding of R&D internationalization strategies for both AMNEs and EMNEs. Additionally, bringing different underutilized theoretical perspectives will help to untangle the anomalies observed in extant literature.

Originality/value

This paper is among the few to scrutinize the IB literature on R&D internationalization by applying a unique combination of bibliometric techniques and a content analysis approach. By complementing existing reviews and providing fresh insights into the phenomenon, it offers a conceptual framework that can be used as a basis for further research on R&D internationalization.
