Abstract
This chapter considers the reception of the poetry of Charles Baudelaire through the music of the Soviet metal band Chernyi Obelisk. It argues that Chernyi Obelisk's four Baudelaire settings, performed in Russian, as part of their early live sets in 1986/1987, offer an important part of the poet's reception history, within the Soviet Union. Taking as a starting point, Michael Robbins's claim that ‘metal and poetry are […] arts of accusation and instruction’, the chapter explores ideas of alienation and of the carnivalesque in Baudelaire's works, as presented through the medium of metal music. Focussing particular on settings of ‘Spleen’ and ‘Une Gravure fantastique’, the chapter contends that Chernyi Obelisk's intertextual and interlingual dialogue with Baudelaire can be read as an aesthetic response to social and political uncertainty during the era of glasnost and perestroika.

Abstract
Music elicits emotions and acts as a cultural definer of class values, political beliefs, and economic life. Students are intrinsically drawn to and possess an innate ability for interpreting music. Music, moreover, activates learning in ways other content sources cannot; yet, it is utilized infrequently in social studies classrooms as a historical inquiry tool. Harnessing its emotive and seductive power, music as a primary source naturally scaffolds understanding of the zeitgeist through sensory engagement and lyrical analyses. Focusing on Born in the U.S.A. (Springsteen, 1984), authors demonstrate how examining music can impart views often absent from mass media portrayal of historical events and eras. A music listening and analysis tool is employed as a heuristic for critically interpreting music to explore the past. The historical thinking processes presented offer an inquiry-oriented curricular model for integrating music and social studies.

Abstract
Purpose
To demonstrate that aesthetic approaches, including poetry and music, can be used to help managers to explore issues of culture and its relation to decision making and strategic change.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, these possibilities are explored through the use of an award‐winning and hugely influential series of BBC Radio programmes, The Radio Ballads, produced between 1958‐1964, using music, song and the words of informants only, without the intervention of any narrative voice, to convey a range of issues but importantly including that of the dynamics of industrial and occupational subcultures.
Findings
Whilst attention has been drawn to the importance of cultural issues in organizations in the past, these have often been addressed rationalistically, with over‐emphasis on functional issues and exchange value. Poetry and music enable the symbolic and emotional values underpinning culture to be accessed, developing a greater sensitivity in managers to a wider range of relevant issues within and without the organisation, and may themselves become a stimulus for change.
Research limitations/implications
The material used is exemplary, but responses to potential criticisms of the methodology are offered in the paper.
Practical implications
Suggestions are made for use of the material in strategic and cultural change initiatives, to improve communication, and to increase emotional awareness.
Originality/value
This paper uniquely makes available a set of already important historical resources that have only recently been re‐released, and offers the first analysis of their potential for organisations.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to give an overview of scholarly monographs on rock music from 1980 to the present. It aims to provide an overview to the literature for practical purposes of collection development as well as giving the reader insight into key issues and trends related to a interdisciplinary topic that attracts scholars from many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
Design/methodology/approach
This bibliographic essay, focusing on works related to American culture and of a general nature, includes an overview and historical background; a discussion of how music and ethnomusiciological scholars approach the topic; geographic approaches; literature on four key icons (Elvis, Dylan, Springsteen, and Madonna); American studies; subcultures and genres; other methodologies; and concludes by discussing notable recent works.
Findings
The scholarly literature on rock incorporates a wide variety of approaches and methodologies. Many music‐related scholars appropriate methodology from other disciplines and some non‐music‐related scholars use the formalistic analysis of music scholars. Authenticity is a major theme in the literature on rock.
Originality/value
This essay covers the widest range of monographs on the topic, providing insight into not only the key scholars but also the diversity of approaches to the topic. The historical approach to the literature gives the reader a sense of how the academic discourse on rock has evolved. This essay is of interest to librarians, scholars of rock music, and others concerned with how American scholarship in the humanities and the social sciences has grown since the advent of cultural studies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the provision of audiovisual materials in UK public libraries and their economic value.
Design/methodology/approach
A questionnaire survey of all the public library authorities in the UK was used to investigate current provision of audiovisual material, expected future provision, and the amounts spent on and generated by audiovisual collections. Data collected, together with those available from other reputable sources, were then used to estimate the cost benefit or value of audiovisual provision.
Findings
The provision of audiovisual material in UK public libraries is widespread and varied. While audiovisual collections provide economic value and generate income from charging for loans, there are significant costs inherent in providing such services. Concerns are raised about the constant developments in media formats and the ability to make adequate provision. A cost benefit of 1:1.34 using the PVB (present value benefits) based on maximum loan charges was found, meaning that the UK gets £1.34 direct benefit from every £1.00 spent on the audiovisual service.
Research limitations/implications
There are different methods used by economists to estimate value of public services, all having limitations. The method used in this research is no exception. The cost‐benefit ratio found is based on maximum loan charges. However, this figure would be higher if the PVB had been based on purchase costs or lower if the PVB had been based on mean loan charges. Further, the figures do not include indirect benefits or option benefits, so are likely to be underestimates of the true cost benefit of the audiovisual service.
Practical implications
This research is likely to be of interest to public library managers and funding bodies needing evidence for the value of audiovisual provision.
Originality/value
This is the first attempt to put a monetary value on audiovisual provision in the UK. It also provides insights into current and future audiovisual provision.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the way in which film can introduce jazz to a wider audience.
Design/methodology/approach
This study applies the method of subjective personal introspection (SPI) to the area of film and music consumption. The paper reports on insights provided by two researchers through using SPI to investigate their relationships to film and jazz music. In so doing, the paper adopts a Bourdieuian frame in applying a reflexive methodological approach and considering the role of cultural and symbolic capital in influencing these consumption practices.
Findings
This paper found that aside from the recognition problem facing jazz, episodes of sublimation may prevent potential audiences from increasing consumption of jazz music.
Research limitations/implications
In common with all SPI studies, the focus of the research is very narrow. While the indepth insight provided here is of use to scholars of arts consumption, further research should explore the prevalence of sublimination in arts communities in order to extend this further.
Practical implications
This study moves our understanding of why consumers may not develop their consumption relationship with jazz music. The findings can be used by jazz professionals in addressing ways in which consumers may overcome their lack of cultural capital and the emphasis placed on this by the wider jazz consumption community.
Social implications
The paper investigates issues of inclusion and exclusion which should have wider social relevance.
Originality/value
The paper addresses the issue of participation in the arts and should be of value to academics and arts marketing practitioners alike.
