Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to review the fundamental concepts of radio frequency identification (RFID) and to discuss the fact that the road to success for healthcare systems is the thorough management of patients, employees, equipment, medications, and records throughout the industry. Thereafter, it aims to prepare a deep review of the technology, study seven new cases on the topic of healthcare management and deliver a broad applications area thereof.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper identifies key elements of RFID through the review of healthcare management literature and case studies. For this purpose, seven cases from the healthcare industry are reviewed to demonstrate the extent of the applications of RFID in this area.

Findings

To make healthcare management systems functional and successfully operational, RFID solutions can be used to reduce operating costs through management of patients, employees, equipment, medications, and records to improve tracking and tracing, and preventing the lost of resources under any circumstances.

Originality/value

This paper delivers a review of RFID on the healthcare industry. For this reason, the basic and key point on RFID technology is discussed and seven cases from the literature are reviewed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this technical paper is to provide a review of the applications of radio frequency identification (RFID) in healthcare management systems. It seeks to describe RFID's key points, adoptions, risks and benefits, and the areas of its applications. Some applications of RFID in healthcare management are briefly reviewed and three cases are discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides key information on RFID and the integration of healthcare systems and RFID for generating new systems with higher levels of profitability, efficiency, and productivity.

Findings

To make healthcare systems functional and successfully operational, the healthcare industry can use RFID solutions to reduce operating costs by decreasing the labor costs, insurance claims, the risks associated with medical errors, and errors in medication filling pharmacies. This will help the healthcare industry to increase the operating income by reducing working capital through reductions in inventory level and lowering appropriate costs. Such strategies can bring higher levels of profitability and productivity to the healthcare systems.

Practical implications

Owing to the fact that a better management of healthcare system is related to the full understanding of RFID technologies and the system under consideration, sufficient background on the RFID technology along with its risks and benefits are provided and its impact on the healthcare management system including profitability and productivity enhancement are discussed.

Originality/value

In this paper, author has discussed about the RFID active and passive tags, the costs of tags, its producers, and frequencies.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to review the fundamental concept of quality function deployment (QFD) and discusses the fact that a road to success for a new product development is the identification of customers' requirements and their conversion into engineering design requirements. Thereafter, it seeks to review the subject and to study four new cases on the topic of QFD.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper discusses key elements of QFD and the fact that the vision for the development of a comprehensive quality system can be built upon the principles of QFD taking customer requirements into consideration and relating that to the design requirements.

Findings

To make product development task successful and bringing competitive advantages to the core business, management must be committed to the needs of the customers through marketing surveys and implementing that into the process of product development by converting them into engineering design requirements.

Practical implications

The method has been used successfully in practice in areas such as: facility locations, marketing strategies, robot selection, ERP selection, software development, and sports.

Originality/value

The paper reviews QFDs, and its extensions such as fuzzy QFD, analytic hierarchy process, analytic network process and QFD, statistically extended QFD, dynamic QFD, and other extensions of that. In addition to that, cases covering topics of: ship of quality, cost‐design parameter modeling, enhanced version of the quality function development, financial factors and uncertainties in the product design process with fuzzy formulation, and a model for prioritizing and designing rule changes for the game of soccer, are also reviewed.

Abstract

Purpose

This article provides a brief review of current literature on ERP and its implementation in industries. To fully understand the ERP software key points, risks, benefits, critical success factors, implementation issues, and the fundamental on that are identified and reviewed. Some applications of ERP in public places, government offices, and industries are briefly discussed and four related cases are reviewed.

Design/methodology/approach

Provides a background on enterprise resource planning implementation, key elements of ERP, and review four important cases from the literature in that regard. To better introduce ERP software to new users the risks and benefits of that are discussed in item lists and each are described briefly.

Findings

Pointed to key benefits and risks of enterprise resource systems software and studies four cases from the literature related to the ERP implementation.

Originality/value

Due to the fact that a better management of a system is related to the full understanding of the technologies implemented and the system under consideration, sufficient background on the enterprise resource planning is provided. The lack of research papers and conceptual papers related to risk‐benefit analysis of ERP systems is a motivation for conducting this research.

Abstract

Purpose

The author aims to review the fundamental concept of quality function deployment and to discuss the facts that the road to success for new product development is the identification of customers' requirements and their conversion into engineering design requirements. Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the fundamental concept of collaborative supply chain (CSC) and discuss the facts that a road to success in the process of design, implementation and operations of a supply chain is the identification of superior strategies and clear objectives. One of these strategies is known as CSC, that needs to be studied, evaluated and implemented.

Design/methodology/approach

Discusses key elements of CSC and the fact that the vision for the CSC can be built upon principles as such as automation, information, trust and commitment, quality leadership, customer focused, collaborative and e‐collaborative partnerships, and integrated information system.

Findings

The paper finds that to make supply chain management successful, management must be committed to high standard of performance, trust including long‐term collaborative relationships that can deliver results independent of industry and sector type.

Originality/value

Owing to the fact that a better management of production system is related to the full understanding of the technologies implemented and the system under consideration, the CSC and its related components are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose the idea of developing an automatic Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)‐based system for library search and to examine the existing literature to determine whether current technology and developed RFID‐based systems are helpful for building that. To fully understand its key points, adoptions, risks, and benefits, the fundamentals of radio frequency are to be identified and reviewed. Some applications of radio frequency identification in library systems and various industries are to be briefly discussed and four related cases reviewed.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper identifies key benefits and risks of radio frequency identification through review of library literature and case studies. For this purpose, four cases are reviewed from the entire industry and then key features of those cases are matched with the requirements of the big pictures' RFID‐based system to determine the current level of the RFID‐based system development.

Findings

To make library systems functional and successfully operational RFID solutions can be used to reduce operating costs through decreasing the labor costs, enhancing automation, improving tracking and tracing, and preventing the loss of materials under any circumstances.

Originality/value

The proposed automated RFID‐based system is a novel idea by itself. Owing to the fact that better management of books and materials becomes possible, materials are not lost, theft is avoided, and patrons are served on time and correctly.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce some of the most important and fundamental points about Six‐Sigma and the main points that researchers, implementers and users should keep in mind in addressing Six‐Sigma to large and small companies as well as system development and/or planning for such applications. In addition to that this author proposes an algorithm for calculating the overall sigma level of a multistage system. Example problems are provided and the weighting technique is discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides a general review of the Six‐Sigma and some of its extensions. The topic is followed by the introduction of a new algorithm that can be used for calculating the overall sigma level of a multistage system.

Findings

In a journey to business excellence, an organization is successful if specific goals for critical processes of the organization are identified. The quality management programs implemented can modernize and simplify activities towards the ultimate goal of the business. Regarding that, the author discusses key issues as such as leadership commitment, what Six‐Sigma would bring to the organization, how it works, Six‐Sigma business strategies, Six‐Sigma methodologies, mathematical formulation of Six‐Sigma, the use of simulation with Six‐Sigma, new Six‐Sigma, benefits of Six‐Sigma, costs of Six‐Sigma, critical success factors and the future of Six‐Sigma.

Practical implications

Six‐Sigma has the potential to change the quality program of an organization. When the selected quality program is Six‐Sigma, the organizational goal is to reach a sigma level of 6, or the objective of 3.4 defects per million opportunities.

Originality/value

In this paper, the author reviews the fundamental concept of Six‐Sigma and elaborates why it is important for small and large organizations to employ Six‐Sigma concepts into their working methodology for quality improvement. The DMAIC steps to be taken, tools to be used and the deliverables are completely discussed. The author also discusses a Six‐Sigma weighted average methodology for calculating the overall Six‐Sigma level for an organization with many working stages or processes.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the key benefits of the radio frequency identification (RFID) on various industries and supply chains (SCs) all around the world. In this research, author has looked into different case studies and identified a list of benefits that RFID has brought to various industries. The clear benefits of RFID are: automation; transparency; asset management; velocity; insight; traceability; security; reliability; and capability. To understand RF, fundamental key points are identified and reviewed. Some applications of RFID in SCs are briefly reviewed and ten cases of RFID are discussed.

Design/methodology/approach
