Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge loss impact on the performance of management information system (MIS) departments due to its influence on absorptive capacity. Furthermore, knowledge retention in human resource management and information system application is also included in the research model, in order to examine their effectiveness in mitigating knowledge loss. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey method and hypotheses are tested with the collected data from 191 Taiwanese IS personnel.

Findings

The results not only indicate knowledge loss has impacts on the absorptive capacity and performance of MIS departments while information systems could mitigate knowledge loss, but also provide deeper understanding of knowledge loss and potential issues for academics; as for practitioners, this study could serve as a reference to design and adopt knowledge management (KM) mechanisms.

Originality/value

KM is an important issue for organizations since it is the source of competitive advantages and excellent performance, although the investment in KM is not necessary effective in retaining knowledge. This study conducts survey to examine the influences of knowledge loss in MIS departments, since the high turnover rate of employees and the rapid environmental changes in technical world may worsen the situation. According to dynamic capability theory, absorptive capacity is a critical ability to have while facing turbulent environment.

Abstract

Purpose

Although journal rankings are important for authors, readers, publishers, promotion, and tenure committees, it has been argued that the use of different measures (e.g. the journal impact factor (JIF), and Hirsch’s h-index) often lead to different journal rankings, which render it difficult to make an appropriate decision. A hybrid ranking method based on the Borda count approach, the Standardized Average Index (SA index), was introduced to solve this problem. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Citations received by the articles published in 85 Health Care Sciences and Services (HCSS) journals in the period of 2009-2013 were analyzed with the use of the JIF, the h-index, and the SA index.

Findings

The SA index exhibits a high correlation with the JIF and the h-index (γ > 0.9, p < 0.01) and yields results with higher accuracy than the h-index. The new, comprehensive citation impact analysis of the 85 HCSS journals shows that the SA index can help researchers to find journals with both high JIFs and high h-indices more easily, thereby harvesting references for paper submissions and research directions.

Originality/value

The contribution of this study is the application of the Borda count approach to combine the HCSS journal rankings produced by the two widely accepted indices of the JIF and the h-index. The new HCSS journal rankings can be used by publishers, journal editors, researchers, policymakers, librarians, and practitioners as a reference for journal selection and the establishment of decisions and professional judgment.

Abstract

This paper presents neural network‐based recognition system for automatic light emitting diode (LED) inspection. The back‐propagation neural network (BPNN) is proposed and tested. The current‐voltage (I‐V) characteristic data of LED from the inspection process is used for the network training and testing. This study selects 300 random samples as network training and employs 100 samples as network testing. The experimental results show that if the classification work is doen well, the accuracy of recognition is 100 per cent, and the testing speed of the proposed recognition system is amost one half faster than the traditional inspection system does. The proposed neural‐network approach is successfully demonstrated by real data sets and can be effectively developed as a recognition system for a practical application purpose.

Abstract

Purpose

This research explores the complex interplay of multiple social factors with regard to what might encourage or inhibit users to interact with social commerce (SC).

Design/methodology/approach

To investigate the phenomenon, we developed a model based on goal-directed behaviour and pluralistic ignorance theory (typically generated by universal behavioural adherence to social norms). Based on the 394 valid responses collected from a survey, partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), PROCESS and ANOVA were employed to examine the research hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that pluralistic ignorance and commercial desire positively influence SC intention. More importantly, our results show that the moderating effect of pluralistic ignorance dampens the positive relationship between social subjective norms and commercial desire. The findings also suggest that pluralistic ignorance mediates the relationships between: (1) social identity and SC intentions and (2) fear of isolation and SC intentions.

Originality/value

Consequently, this study reveals that SC intentions result from complex interactions between an individual’s psychology and social phenomena. Theoretical and managerial implications are also discussed to provide for the successful development of strategies regarding SC for researchers and SNSs operators.

Abstract

The IC packaging industry heavily relies on shop floor information, necessitating the development of a model to flexibly define shop floor information and timely handle manufacturing data. This study presents a novel data model of product manufacturing flow to define shop floor information to effectively respond to accelerated developments in IC package industry. The proposed data model consists of four modules: operation template setup, general process setup, enhanced bill of manufacture (EBOMfr) setup, and work‐order process setup. The data model can flexibly define the required shop floor information and decision rules for shop floor product manufacturing flow, allowing one to easily adopt changes of the product and on the shop floor. However, to handle floor dynamics of the ICD packaging industry, this work also proposes a WIP (i.e. work‐in‐process) system for monitoring and controlling the product manufacturing flow on the shop floor. The WIP system integrates the data model with a WIP execution module. Furthermore, an illustrative example, the MIRL WIP System, developed by Mechanical Industrial Research Laboratories of Industrial Technology Research Institute, demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Due to the advancement of technology and rapidly changing environment of the market, the life cycle of high‐tech products is becoming shorter. The enterprise must constantly innovate and select correct development strategy of new product in order to respond to customers’ demands for upgrading operational performance of industry. Development of new product is the critical activity for enterprise’s survival and growth. This research focuses on the effects of Taiwan high‐tech companies’ introduction of innovative activity and development strategy of new product on development performance of new product for analysis and exploration. The result findings reveal that: (1) High execution degree of innovative activity has positive effect on the implementation of development strategy of new product; (2) The companies with better implementation of development strategy of new product reveal better development performance; (3) The companies with higher degree of execution of innovative activity and better execution of development strategy of new product reveal better development performance of new product.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumer-generated online product reviews (OPRs) have become a crucial source of information for consumers; however, OPRs are increasingly being incentivized. The purpose of this paper is to find a method of sponsorship and disclosure that could be considered ethically sound.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted a quasi-experimental approach to clarifying how the method of sponsorship impacts reader perceptions of OPRs in terms of helpfulness, credibility and purchase intention. Two experiments were performed on an online platform using data from 480 participants. Hypotheses were tested using analysis of covariance.

Findings

Meaning under the premise that sponsorship information is disclosed and not withheld from the readers, Study 1 revealed that experiential sponsorship is the best sponsorship. Study 2 revealed that featuring reviewers with greater influence in the online community increases the positive influence of disclosing experiential sponsorship on OPR persuasiveness.

Originality/value

The findings in this study provide rational incentives for firms to disclose sponsorship information, i.e. demonstrate high ethical standards in marketing. This was shown to create a win-win-win situation for consumers, firms and reviewers. Managerial implications for online marketing managers are also discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigated distributive justice (DJ), procedural justice (PJ) and interactional justice (IJ) in the recovery of service in the hotel industry as well as their effects on post-recovery satisfaction and the subsequent behavior of customers. This study also sought to elucidate the moderating effects of star ratings on these influences.

Design/methodology/approach

A field experiment design with 424 consumers using structural equation modeling was adopted to test the study hypotheses.

Findings

DJ, PJ and IJ were all shown to have a significantly positive effect on post-recovery satisfaction, which in turn has a significantly positive effect on customer loyalty and significantly negative effect on customer defection. Analysis on the moderating effects of star ratings also revealed that the relationship between DJ and post-recovery satisfaction during recovery efforts is stronger for hotels with higher star ratings than for hotels with lower star ratings. During recovery, post-recovery satisfaction was shown to be more effective in reducing customer defection from hotels with lower star ratings than from hotels with higher star ratings.

Practical implications

This study provides a reference by which hotels can match their service recovery mechanism to their star rating to retain customers and increase customer loyalty in the event of service failure.

Originality/value

This study confirms the importance of IJ in the service recovery processes in the hotel industry and provides verification that the star rating of a hotel plays a crucial role as a moderator between recovery effort and recovery effectiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

To integrate environmental management systems into daily operations, the environmental aspects of management control systems (MCS) are enhanced. Although different approaches and concepts for Environmental Management Control Systems (EMCS) have been developed, two main problems appear: First, insights into how to implement EMCS are rare. Second, concepts are constructed mainly for large companies rather than for SMEs.

Methodology/approach

To close these research gaps, an implementation framework for SMEs is developed based on Epstein’s corporate sustainability framework. By using an action-oriented research approach, the implementation framework is analysed and tested on three Logistics Service Providers (LSPs).

Findings

The framework worked well with two of the firms analysed and failed with the third firm. The case study results enable a first evaluation of the implementation requirements that are essential for implementing EMCS in SMEs.
