Abstract
The importance of quality has recently been established in US manufacturing. It has been stated many times that the reason why people buy foreign products is the lack of quality. The purpose of the study described is to compare and analyse the similarities and distinctions between the major contributors to the concept of quality. The quality approaches of four of the world′s most influential theorists on the subject are examined. The theories described provide the manager with an understanding of what management reforms must be made within a firm in order to ensure quality within all of its departments.

Abstract
Purpose
As the importance of health care is growing worldwide and it has undergone a significant change, this paper aims to report a case study in a hospital complex that implemented an excellence model framework.
Design/methodology/approach
Reported in this paper is a case research approach in a hospital in Brazil. Data were gathered through semi‐structured interviews, direct field observation and archival data records. Then, the aggregation of results was done a posteriori to construct the case study.
Findings
The empirical evidence in the paper has shown that the introduction of the quality management framework based on a national quality award enhanced quality awareness and improved service quality and organizational performance. In addition, the use of the framework at the hospital supports organization leadership in the journey towards quality excellence.
Research limitations/implications
The paper is limited to a single case study. Replications among other samples are needed to validate current findings. In addition, because quality management initiatives are not necessarily constant over time, there is a need to conduct longitudinal studies on a periodical basis. Nevertheless, there is a certain degree of generalization of what has been learned from the case study.
Originality/value
This paper is one of the few published studies that report and discuss the implementation of a quality management system based on a performance excellence framework in a country in South America.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing upon the resource-based view, the authors examined empirically the total effect of total quality management (TQM), organisational excellence and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on organisational performance
Design/methodology/approach
Hypotheses were formed to be tested using primary data collected through a survey questionnaire. The data were collected from the Dubai police organisation as a field of study. Out of the 500 distributed questionnaires, 280 questionnaires were returned. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyse the data for measurement and structural models.
Findings
The statistical results that were extracted using PLS-SEM confirmed the positive and significant effect of TQM, organisational excellence and EO on organisational performance.
Practical implications
In this study, many valuable implications were found from the results. The outcomes of this study can help managers, decision makers and practitioners in considering the importance of implementing practices, such as TQM, excellence and EO in their organisations. Therefore, the outcomes can help in achieving the best desired performance.
Originality/value
The present study is one of the most important empirical research studies that examine the total effect of TQM, organisational excellence and EO on performance relationships.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to study the collective effect of leadership, strategic planning and entrepreneurial organizational culture (EOC) on organizational excellence.
Design/methodology/approach
Using primary data obtained through a survey questionnaire, hypotheses have been developed for testing. Out of a total of 565 questionnaires, only 355 questionnaires were returned where data were collected from the Dubai police organization. The structural equation modelling (SEM) approach was used to analyse the collected data.
Findings
Statistical findings using SEM-partial least square confirmed the full mediating role of strategic planning as a mechanism between leadership and organizational excellence. In addition, the results reported a significant effect of leadership on strategic planning besides its impact on organizational excellence.
Practical implications
Results reported many valuable implications. The outcomes of this study have practical implications that will help managers, decision-makers and practitioners to consider the study’s variables to enhance the overall performance through achieving excellence.
Originality/value
The collective role of leadership, strategic planning, EOC and organizational excellence is studied as one of the most important empirical studies which bring original contribution to the existing body of knowledge.

Purpose
The traditional practice for maintenance, quality control and production scheduling is to plan independently irrespective of an interrelationship exist between them. The purpose of this paper is to develop an approach for integrating maintenance, quality control and production scheduling. The objective is to investigate the benefits of the integrated effect in terms of the expected total cost of system operation of the three functions.
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed approach is based on the conditional reliability of the components. Cost model for integrating selective maintenance, quality control using sampling-based procedure and production scheduling is developed using the conditional reliability. An integrated approach is such that, first an optimal schedule for the batches to be processed is obtained independently while the maintenance and quality control decisions are optimized considering the optimal schedule on the machine. The expected total cost of conventional approach, i.e. “No integration” is calculated to compare the effectiveness of integrated approach.
Findings
The integrated approach have shown a higher cost saving as compared to the independent planning approach. The approach is practical to implement as the results are obtained in a reasonable computational time.
Practical implications
The approach presented in this paper is generic and can be applied at planned as well as unplanned opportunities. The proposed integrated approach is dynamic in nature, as during maintenance opportunities, it is possible to optimize the decision on maintenance, quality control and production scheduling considering the current age of components and production requirement.
Originality/value
The originality of the paper is in the approach for integration of the three elements of shop floor operations that are usually treated separately and rarely touched upon by researchers in the literature.

This has led to greater recognition being given to the strategic potential of the operations function. In order to provide greater insight into operations a number of classifications have been proposed. Abstract
This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.
