Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a new method of robust parameter design for dynamic multi‐response system. The objectives are to resolve the correlations among multiple responses and the uncertainty of system with incomplete information.
Design/methodology/approach
First, desirability function is used to measure dynamic system sensitivity and system variation, and principal component analyses on the two indices are conducted. Second, the grey relational grade (GRD) between principal component sequences of the two indices and their respective ideal sequences, gained by grey relational analysis, is converted to an integrated GRD (IGRD) index by means of TOPSIS method, and then the optimal level combination of controllable factors is identified based on the IGRD index.
Findings
It was found that the optimal factor level combination obtained by the proposed method is nearest the ideal solution and farthest from the negative ideal solution. The validity and superiority of the proposed method are confirmed through two illustrative examples.
Research limitations/implications
It should be noted that the proposed method fails to consider the interaction effects between controllable factors and noise factors.
Originality/value
The method proposed in the paper effectively integrates several common methods to optimize a dynamic multiple responses system based on Taguchi's robust parameter design. These methods do not involve complicated mathematical theory, and are therefore easy for practitioners to use in engineering practice.

Abstract
Purpose
The authors’ conclusions are based on mathematical derivations that are supported by computer simulations and three worked examples in applications of economics and finance. Finally, the authors provide a link to a computer program so that researchers can perform the analyses easily.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on a parameter estimation goal, the present work is concerned with determining the minimum sample size researchers should collect so their sample medians can be trusted as good estimates of corresponding population medians. The authors derive two solutions, using a normal approximation and an exact method.
Findings
The exact method provides more accurate answers than the normal approximation method. The authors show that the minimum sample size necessary for estimating the median using the exact method is substantially smaller than that using the normal approximation method. Therefore, researchers can use the exact method to enjoy a sample size savings.
Originality/value
In this paper, the a priori procedure is extended for estimating the population median under the skew normal settings. The mathematical derivation and with computer simulations of the exact method by using sample median to estimate the population median is new and a link to a free and user-friendly computer program is provided so researchers can make their own calculations.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the theoretical and practical links between digital twin (DT) application in heritage facilities management (HFM) from a life cycle management perspective and to signpost the future development directions of DT in HFM.
Design/methodology/approach
This state-of-the-art review was conducted using a systematic literature review method. Inclusive and exclusive criteria were identified and used to retrieve relevant literature from renowned literature databases. Shortlisted publications were analysed using the VOSviewer software and then critically reviewed to reveal the status quo of research in the subject area.
Findings
The review results show that DT has been mainly adopted to support decision-making on conservation approach and method selection, performance monitoring and prediction, maintenance strategies design and development, and energy evaluation and management. Although many researchers attempted to develop DT models for part of a heritage building at component or system level and test the models using real-life cases, their works were constrained by availability of empirical data. Furthermore, data capture approaches, data acquisition methods and modelling with multi-source data are found to be the existing challenges of DT application in HFM.
Originality/value
In a broader sense, this study contributes to the field of engineering, construction and architectural management by providing an overview of how DT has been applied to support management activities throughout the building life cycle. For the HFM practice, a DT-cum-heritage building information modelling (HBIM) framework was developed to illustrate how DT can be integrated with HBIM to facilitate future DT application in HFM. The overall implication of this study is that it reveals the potential of heritage DT in facilitating HFM in the urban development context.

Abstract
Purpose
The study aims to understand how cultural route heritage is conceptualized and managed in China by systematically reviewing the research literature on Chinese cultural route heritage (CRH). The study intends to inspire further discussion on the theoretical and practical development of cultural routes since the development is still at a liminal stage in China.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 253 research articles related to Chinese cultural rote heritage from major Chinese and English research databases China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus have been comprehensively identified and reviewed for the purpose of the study.
Findings
Four major themes of research on Chinese CRH have been identified: conceptual evaluation, list of the routes and characteristics of the routes, conservation and utilization. The results revealed that China has very rich resources in CRH, many of which were formed a long time ago, which exist across vast geographic regions and have assumed multiple functions and undergone dynamic reciprocal exchanges among diverse cultures and ethnicities.
Practical implications
The paper summarizes some major obstacles faced by CRH in China and proposes a strategic model to address the need for a more sustainable development of CRH in the Chinese context.
Originality/value
The paper offers a comprehensive overview of CRH in China and discusses practical issues in management and development of heritage great in size, number and complexity.

Purpose
Part building orientation (PBO) is an important factor affecting the quality of laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF), which can affect the surface quality and manufacturing cost. The purpose of this paper is to propose a PBO optimization method to optimize the surface roughness and molding time of parts at the same time on the premise of small calculation scale and arbitrary resolution.
Design/methodology/approach
Efficient and accurate evaluation is an important index of PBO optimization method. In this paper, a PBO optimization method based on scaling enumeration method is proposed, and the surface roughness and molding time of L-PBF parts are modeled as the objective evaluation function of PBO optimization process. To realize multi-objective optimization, an expert system is established, and the fuzzy multiple-attribute group decision-making theory is used to provide weights for each objective evaluation function.
Findings
Research shows that the scaling-enumeration method can optimize the surface roughness and molding time at the same time and get the best PBO. Compared with the traditional method, the surface roughness and molding time are reduced by 1.1% and 0.58%, respectively, and the operation scale of the scaling-enumeration method is reduced by 99% compared with the traditional method. PBO with arbitrary angular resolution can be achieved.
Originality/value
This paper presents a new method to optimize the forming direction of L-PBF parts. This method has small operation scale and accurate results, so it is meaningful for industrial application.

Abstract
Purpose
In view of the defects of glued wood beams, a new composite member – reconstituted bamboo board reinforced glued wood beams is proposed to improve the bearing capacity of glued wood beams.
Design/methodology/approach
The bending test studied the ordinary glulam beams and the reinforced glulam beams with different layer numbers and different layer thicknesses by comparing with six kinds of glulam beams strengthened with bamboo scrimber and one kind of ordinary glulam beams and used the method of third-point stepwise loading on the glulam beams strengthened with bamboo scrimber.
Findings
The bamboo scrimber improved the bending behavior of the ordinary glulam beams. The 10 mm bamboo scrimber layer can meet the requirements of the maximum ultimate bending capacity and minimize the defects. So 10 mm bamboo scrimber layer was the optimal thickness. During the loading process, the strain change of the normal section of the reconstituted bamboo board reinforced glued wood beam basically conforms to the plane section assumption.
Originality/value
The bending rigidities of the glulam beams strengthened with bamboo scrimber increased up to 28.25%, 8.53% and 76.67%, and the ultimate bending capacity increased from 83.44% to 99.34% with the increase of the bamboo scrimber plate layers (the replacement rate). The ultimate bending capacities and the bending rigidities of the glulam beams strengthened with bamboo scrimber increased to 52.32%∼60.18% and 90.07%∼99.34% with the changing of the bamboo scrimber thicknesses from 7.1 mm to 25 mm.

Abstract
Purpose
Construction managers face many work-related stressors induced by unrealistic schedule expectations, tight budgets, and long hours. Over time, these stressors can result in both mental and physical exhaustion, a condition referred to as burnout. Early-career managers are a key worker demographic, as they represent the near-term future of the construction industry, yet they have a high risk for burnout. The purpose of this study is to explore the prevalence of burnout in new construction managers, and to identify which individual or work-related factors are associated with feelings of burnout.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey (MBI-GS), data from 146 early-career professionals (less than 10 years of experience) with construction management degrees in the USA were collected and analyzed using correlational and best subset regression techniques.
Findings
The results show that the early-career demographic in the USA experiences both the Emotional Exhaustion and Cynicism dimensions of burnout at comparable levels to prior studies with more mid-to-late career respondents. However, the Professional Efficacy dimension was significantly higher in early-career professionals than any other sample. No individual factors, such as gender, marital status, or number of children, were predictive of any dimension of burnout. Instead, only work-related factors including co-worker friendliness, opportunities for personal development and promotion, and the ability to control the work pacing were strongly associated with one or more dimensions of burnout.
Originality/value
This study is the first to explore burnout in the key early-career demographic for construction managers in the United States construction industry. This work provides evidence that organizational policies and culture have a greater efficacy in alleviating burnout in this demographic, when compared to the work–life balance of the individual.
