Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand the performance of countries in individual Olympic Games, specifically focusing on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Employing cluster analysis and decision trees, the research aims to categorize countries based on their representation, participation and success.
Design/methodology/approach
This research employs a data-driven approach to comprehensively analyze and enhance understanding of countries' performances in individual Olympic Games. The methodology involves a two-stage clustering method and decision tree analysis to categorize countries and identify influential factors shaping their Olympic profiles.
Findings
The study, analyzing countries' performances in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics through cluster analysis and decision trees, identified five clusters with consistent profiles. Notably, China, Great Britain, Japan, Russian Olympic Committee and the United States formed a high-performing group, showcasing superior success, representation and participation. The analysis revealed a correlation between higher representation/participation and success in individual Olympic Games. Decision tree insights underscored the significance of population size, GDP per Capita and HALE index, indicating that countries with larger populations, better economic standing and higher health indices tended to perform better.
Research limitations/implications
The study has several limitations that should be considered. Firstly, the findings are based on data exclusively from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which may limit the generalizability of the results to other editions.
Practical implications
The research offers practical implications for policymakers, governments and sports organizations seeking to enhance their country's performance in individual Olympic Games.
Social implications
The research holds significant social implications by contributing insights that extend beyond the realm of sports.
Originality/value

Purpose
This real estate insight provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state and future potential of tokenization in the real estate industry mentioning several challenges to overcome to take advantage of this technology. We highlight potential benefits, including enhanced liquidity, increased security and improved accessibility. Additionally, the real estate insight critically discusses potential drawbacks, such as regulatory challenges and technological risks, and explores the impact of tokenization on real estate prices.
Design/methodology/approach
This real estate insight employs a comprehensive literature review alongside a qualitative analysis of various case studies to explore current implementations of tokenization within the real estate industry. Multiple applications of tokenization in the real estate industry are examined, including fractional ownership, property management and transaction processes. The study investigates the optimization potential of tokenization for asset liquidity in the real estate area, transaction transparency and security. It also critically discusses potential challenges, such as regulatory compliance, security vulnerabilities and market adoption.
Findings
The future of real estate tokenization, driven by blockchain technology and smart contracts, offers significant potential for growth, enhancing liquidity and accessibility through fractional ownership. Smart contracts automate and secure transactions, while evolving standards and regulatory frameworks in regions like North America, Europe and Asia support market expansion. Since its initial implementation with the St. Regis Aspen Resort STO, a stream of successful projects has highlighted the viability of tokenization. However, challenges remain, including the need for regulatory clarity, industry and customer education, displacements of market participants and jobs and environmental impacts. Integrating advanced technologies like AI and IoT can further streamline property management and investment decisions.
Practical implications
The real estate insight’s practical implications extend to industry professionals, policymakers and technology developers. Professionals gain insights into how tokenization can enhance liquidity and security in the real estate sector, guiding strategic decision-making. For policymakers, understanding potential challenges like regulatory compliance and technological risks informs the development of supportive regulations. Technology developers can also benefit from understanding the sector-specific applications and concerns raised. Highlighting the need for robust security measures and regulatory compliance in tokenization systems may foster better design practices. Therefore, the real estate insight’s findings could significantly shape the future development of tokenization integration in the real estate industry.

Abstract
Purpose
Studies on land acquisition (LA) and recovery simulations have garnered considerable attention amidst climate change. Previous literature has reported that LA and relocation contribute to reducing repetitive disaster losses or downzoning (limiting development). However, studies on decision-making about resettlement or relocation for landowners or decision-makers for disaster-impacted lands are limited. This study aims to qualitatively illustrate LA program schemes for recovery, and identify the underlying concepts of LA in Italy, the United States and Japan. By doing so, this study contributes to construction of future agent-based recovery simulations.
Design/methodology/approach
This study seeks to identify a variety of LA models in different contexts to provide input for future works. This study employed multiple case studies to explore common and contrasting results, and identify varied LA concepts. The methodology involved a literature review, including official reports, to examine the timeframes of LA projects qualitatively, complemented using aerial photos to confirm related land use changes pre- and post-LA.
Findings
The results indicate that buyout programs in the United States enhance renaturalization in flood-prone areas as a downzoning approach. In contrast, LA in Japan focuses on the continuation of communities or neighborhoods through the recovery and relocation process. In Italy, LA is used to contribute to supporting the tradition/legacy of historic housing and facilities for post-disaster temporary dwellings, reflecting an underlying concept of “tradition and legacy.”
Originality/value
This comparative study fills a research gap by focusing on LA concepts, and its novelty lies in finding the underlying concepts of LA in three countries. Through international comparison, it suggests that LA in Japan could incorporate conservation of the historical town center or the opportunity for downzoning.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify key research clusters (or sub-fields) in the field of performance measurement research, analyse its historical development and propose future research avenues.
Design/methodology/approach
Several bibliometric analysis methods, including co-citation analysis and text mining techniques, were used to review papers published on performance measurement research.
Findings
This study reveals eight main clusters of research in this field, ranging from theoretical-focused clusters (e.g. strategic performance measurement) to practical-focused clusters (e.g. design of performance measurement). These clusters are further categorised into four groups based on the size and degree of connectedness. Regarding the analysis of historical development, the established clusters, such as supply chain management, remain important, while newer clusters, such as hospitality and humanitarianism, have recently gained increasing interest.
Originality/value
This study applies citation-based clustering, a type of bibliometric literature review method that has been underused in the field of performance measurement. Moreover, the results obtained from this study are also distinct from those of previous studies, offering valuable insights especially for researchers. With a comprehensive understanding of the field, researchers can use it to understand the key literature, observe ongoing developments within their specialisation and inform their future research directions.

Abstract
Purpose
Subjective well-being has attracted attention in relation to its impact on job satisfaction and performance. As a result, companies would do well to encourage positive emotions and minimize negative ones in the workplace. This study aims to examine the factors that contribute to emotional contagion in the workplace in Japan.
Design/methodology/approach
The study builds upon previous research on emotional contagion by considering both personal and professional events using vignette questions and multiple regression analysis. A large group of permanent Japanese employees is included in the study.
Findings
Emotional contagion in the Japanese workplace was found to be primarily influenced by the level of familiarity between sender and receiver, and to a lesser extent by the receiver’s emotional susceptibility, group climate and the hierarchical difference between sender and receiver. Contrary to past research in other countries, several hypothesized predictors had little or no effect on emotional contagion among Japanese employees, such as communication frequency or empathy.
Practical implications
Given the persistent labor shortage and aging population, it is crucial for Japanese companies to understand how positive and negative emotions are transmitted in the workplace. This knowledge can assist them in establishing a work environment that can optimize employee well-being, performance and retention.
Originality/value
While the antecedents of emotional contagion have been extensively studied, their effects within Japanese corporations remain underexplored. Thus, this research investigates the factors that can foster the contagion of positive emotions while mitigating the transmission of negative emotions within the Japanese workplace, thereby addressing the prevailing challenges faced by Japanese companies.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine how companies persuaded their employees to be present at offices during the COVID-19 pandemic and how remote and non-remote work practices affected employee performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Firm strategies are assumed to follow the principles of legitimacy and efficiency. However, these principles are often contradictory and incompatible. This study explored how companies legitimized non-remote work during the pandemic in Japan, and how in-person work practices affected individual employee productivity. The authors conducted a survey in the country, and the collected data was quantitatively analyzed.
Findings
On the basis of our empirical study on institutional work providing rationales for maintaining existing business practices, the authors found that Japanese companies often used institutional logics that included the inevitability of employees’ obedience to company policy, the lack of employees’ digital resources at home and the necessity of face-to-face customer dealing to legitimize their non-adoption of telework, even amid the emergency. The findings also indicate that the adoption of in-person work was negatively related to individual employee performance.
Originality/value
The current study aims to make a theoretical contribution to the literature on institutional maintenance and institutional work, which, till now, has only focused on institutional change rather than institutional maintenance. Second, few studies have empirically investigated the contradiction between legitimacy and efficiency, although the literature on organizational legitimacy assumes that individuals and organizations are not always rational.

Abstract
Purpose
This study examines the relationships among residents' event impact perceptions, attitude towards events, attitude towards sponsors and sponsor-related behavioural intentions (i.e. purchase intention and word-of-mouth).
Design/methodology/approach
Focusing on the Naha Marathon in Okinawa, Japan, as a research context, data were collected from residents of Okinawa who were familiar with the Naha Marathon and its sponsors (N = 322). Structural equation modelling was employed to test the hypotheses, developed based on theories of social exchange, image transfer and planned behaviour.
Findings
The findings revealed that residents’ perceptions of social event impacts, rather than economic and environmental impacts, were associated with attitudes towards the event. Such an effect was indirectly associated with purchase intentions and word-of-mouth intentions via attitude towards the sponsors.
Originality/value
The current research contributes to the literature on sport sponsorship, especially in participation-based sports, by exploring how event sponsors can enjoy fruitful returns on investment. The findings can extend our understanding by highlighting the importance of positive community engagement for sponsors. Sponsors who aim to enhance consumer behaviour should prioritize strategies aligning with the positive social impacts of events.

Abstract
Purpose
This research examined the role of post-conflict marketing in supporting businesses within conflict-affected regions, aligning with the objectives of UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 to foster peaceful societies amid increasing global conflicts.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing from the theories of social egalitarianism and consumer discrimination, the study explored the moderating influence of conflict stakeholder on consumer willingness to pay (WTP). Understanding such stakeholder roles underscores post-conflict marketing's potential for economic growth and stability. Two experiments assessed the WTP, WTP a premium price and expected attractiveness of strategic products and services developed by key stakeholders (ex-guerrilla, ex-paramilitaries, ex-militaries, victims and other citizens) in the Colombian post-conflict context among both local (Colombian) and foreign (Japanese) consumers.
Findings
Results revealed that products associated with victims consistently received higher ratings. A notable contrast emerged as Japanese consumers favoured products of victims over those of regular citizens while rating offerings from ex-paramilitary and retired military stakeholders similarly, unlike their Colombian counterparts.
Research limitations/implications
The study acknowledges limitations regarding participants' geographic location and experimental design, providing insights for future research and potential refinements.
Practical implications
The findings offer insights into the impact of consumer attitudes on post-conflict stakeholder entrepreneurship in foreign and local markets, thus contributing relevant knowledge to support market success.
Originality/value
This is the first study assessing the role of various post-conflict stakeholders in influencing consumer evaluations of products and services. Consequently, these findings contribute to the foundational understanding of post-conflict marketing and offer a benchmark for business development in conflict-affected areas.

Examinar el papel del mercadeo en el apoyo a emprendimientos en regiones afectadas por conflictos, alineándose con el ODS 16 de la ONU para impulsar sociedades pacíficas en medio del aumento de los conflictos.
Diseño
Basada en las teorías del igualitarismo social y discriminación del consumidor, el estudio exploró la influencia de las percepciones hacia actores del posconflicto en el comportamiento de consumo. Dos experimentos evaluaron la disposición a pagar (DAP), DAP un precio superior y la atractividad de productos y servicios desarrollados por actores del posconflicto colombiano (exguerrilleros, exparamilitares, exmilitares, víctimas, otros ciudadanos) entre consumidores locales (colombianos) y extranjeros (japoneses).
Hallazgos
Los productos desarrollados por las víctimas recibieron valoraciones más altas. Además, los consumidores japoneses, a diferencia de los colombianos, prefirieron los productos de las víctimas a los de “otros ciudadanos” y valoraron de manera similar los de exparamilitares y exmilitares.
Implicaciones Prácticas/Sociales
Los resultados ofrecen una visión precisa del impacto de las actitudes de los consumidores sobre los productores del posconflicto en los mercados extranjeros y locales, contribuyendo a la reintegración económica, el crecimiento y la reconciliación social.
Limitaciones de la Investigación
El estudio reconoce posibles limitaciones en el diseño experimental, proporcionando ideas para investigaciones futuras.
Originalidad
Se trata del primer estudio que evalúa el papel de los actores de un posconflicto como productores en la valoración de productos y servicios. Estos resultados contribuyen a la comprensión del mercadeo del posconflicto y ofrecen un punto de referencia para el desarrollo empresarial en zonas afectadas por conflictos.

Abstract
Purpose
The Penrose effect, or the limitation of the growth rate during expansion due to managerial constraints, has been examined in the context of business diversification, withdrawal and MNE’s foreign direct investment, primarily in the for-profit sector. However, insufficient attention has been paid to its impact on professional service firms, particularly in the context of their expansion through service exports. The main purpose of this study is to examine the Penrose effect in the internationalization of professional service firms through service exports.
Design/methodology/approach
This study focuses on large Japanese patent firms as traditional professional service firms and constructs panel data for 48 large patent firms over the observation period from 2002 to 2010 to test our hypotheses.
Findings
Our results demonstrate a negative relationship between degree of internationalization and international business growth, thus confirming the Penrose effect. Furthermore, we found that the degree of internationalization has a curvilinear relationship with international business growth and that institutional distance does not have a negatively moderating effect on the relationship between the degree of internationalization and international business growth.
Originality/value
This study made a theoretical contribution to Penrose's growth theory and previous studies on international management and professional service firms and international management by showing that the Penrose effect can be observed in the international expansion of professional service firms through service exports. Moreover, this study identifies the factors that modify the Penrose effect, thereby making a significant theoretical contribution.

Abstract
Purpose
Along with the development of the robotics industry, service robots have been gradually used in the hospitality industry. Nevertheless, service robot categorization and the fulfillment of the cognitive and emotional needs of consumers by hotel service robots have yet to be fully explored. Hence, the purpose of this study are to categorize hotel service robots, to explore consumers’ robot hotel experience, to identify the consumers’ preference of hotel service robot in general, to reveal consumers’ preference for hotel service robots based on their fulfillment of emotional needs and to examine the completion of cognitive–analytical and emotional–social tasks.
Design/methodology/approach
Through in-depth interviews with technology managers and questionnaire survey among consumers who have and have not had robot hotel stay experience to achieve the aforementioned research objectives.
Findings
Findings of in-depth interviews show that service robots can be categorized as check-in/out robots, artificial intelligence (AI) robots and service delivery robots. Results of questionnaire survey indicate that consumers prefer non-humanoid robots (n = 213, p = 47.87%) among check-in/out robots, the Xiaodu Smart Display (n = 163, p = 36. 63%) among the AI robots and the machine-shaped robot porter (I) (n = 178, p = 40.00%) among the service delivery robots.
Practical implications
This study provides implications, such as the adoption of robot-shaped AI with a screen display, to hotel managers to meet the needs of consumers regarding the completion of cognitive–analytical and emotional–social tasks of robots.
Originality/value
This study extends uncanny valley theory by identifying preference for the shape and functions of different categories of service robots and contributes to the limited literature on hotel robots.
