Abstract

This chapter addresses how project teams achieve coordinated action, given the diversity in how team members may perceive and value time. Although synchronization of task activities may occur spontaneously through the nonconscious process of entrainment, some work conditions demand that team members pay greater conscious attention to time to coordinate their efforts. We propose that shared cognitions on time – the agreement among team members on the appropriate temporal approach to their collective task – will contribute to the coordination of team members’ actions, particularly in circumstances where nonconscious synchronization of action patterns is unlikely. We suggest that project teams may establish shared cognitions on time through goal setting, temporal planning, and temporal reflexivity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how certain limitations of the current approaches to planning and scheduling of aircraft heavy maintenance can be addressed using a single integrated framework supported by unified data structures.

Design/methodology/approach

The “unitary structuring technique”, originally developed within the context of manufacturing planning and control, is further enhanced for aircraft heavy maintenance applications, taking into account the uncertainty associated with condition‐based maintenance. The proposed framework delivers the advanced functionalities required for simultaneous and dynamic forward planning of maintenance operations, as well as finite loading of resources, towards optimising the overall maintenance performance.

Findings

Execution of maintenance operations under uncertainty involves materials changes, rectification and re‐assembly. It is shown that re‐scheduling of materials (spare‐parts), resources and operations can be taken care of by simultaneous and dynamic forward planning of materials and operations with finite loading of resources, using the integrated framework.

Research limitations/implications

As part of adopting the proposed framework in practice, it needs to be guided by an overall methodology appropriate for application‐specific contexts.

Practical implications

The potential direct benefits of adopting the proposed framework include on‐time project completion, reduced inventory levels of spare‐parts and reduced overtime costs.

Originality/value

Existing approaches to aircraft maintenance planning and scheduling are limited in their capacity to deal with contingencies arising out of inspections carried out during the execution phase of large maintenance projects. The proposed integrated approach is, capable of handling uncertainty associated with condition‐based maintenance, due to the added functionalities referred to above.

Abstract

The management in non‐profit humanitarian organizations is often preoccupied with its welfare objectives and ignores the operations efficiency and operating cost controls. Proposes an operations‐planning and control framework for small non‐profit humanitarian organizations. The proposed framework integrates several operations management‐planning tools such as time series forecasting, aggregate production planning, ABC analysis, and material requirements planning (MRP) to facilitate better demand and resource management. The purpose of this framework is to provide management with better resource planning and a base of performance evaluation. Using real data, this framework was applied to a non‐profit organization taking into consideration its unique welfare objective. Results indicate that substantial improvements in operations efficiency and cost reduction are possible for small non‐profit organizations through modified operations‐planning and control activities.

There are several alternatives suggested in the literature to deal with material requirements planning (MRP) system nervousness. Conventional uncertainty buffering techniques, such as safety stock, excess capacity, and safety lead time, can be used to cope with unplanned events and to reduce the impact of system nervousness. However, inappropriate use of safety stock could result in significant work‐in‐process inventory and using safety lead time could distort priorities and increase inventories. Safety capacity is another buffering mechanism which has been used to deal with uncertainty. Dampening procedures to cope with system nervousness have recently received some attention. Here a classification framework is presented which provides a basis for investigating the relative performance of dampening procedures to cope with MRP system nervousness. Operating characteristics are identified and future research directions are suggested.

Abstract

Purpose

Risk management and uncertainty in megaprojects is a flourishing topic in project management, while the unexpected is still a neglected matter. The purpose of this paper is to offer conceptual clarifications of the unexpected based on second-order-cybernetics and systems theory. While transferring findings from organisation theory to project management, the article provides fresh insights into managing the unexpected in megaprojects.

Design/methodology/approach

Being grounded on constructionism and systems theory, the conceptual paper explores selected research approaches from organisation theory: research on high-reliability organising, organisational resilience and organisational improvising, on contributions to managing the unexpected in megaprojects. Using the framework of meaning i.e. the factual, social and temporal dimensions, challenges of handling the unexpected are analysed and (effects of) decision-making structures for such projects are defined.

Findings

This paper argues that classic project management, while neglecting the fundamental distinction between risk, uncertainty and the unexpected, sticks to a planning-and-controlling approach. But the unexpected cannot be planned; however, organisations and managers can prepare for the unexpected. This requests a balance between structure and self-organisation in planning, communication, hierarchy and organisational culture. Understanding the contradictions inherent in managing megaprojects allows for smart decision-making when riding the waves of resilience.

Originality/value

The study adds to the literature on complexity and uncertainty in project management by enhancing the view to include the unexpected. While rejecting the universal applicability of rationality-based risk and controlling conceptions, shifting to second-order cybernetics and integrating elements of resilient organising increases the understanding of handling the unexpected in megaprojects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify key barriers to internationalisation in emerging markets (EMs) for professional service firms (PSFs) from developed markets and to explain how PSFs use social networks to participate within EMs of Asia and overcome these barriers. The paper aims to provide a framework of this process.

Design/methodology/approach

A case‐based research design is used to explore key professional service industries (legal, media consulting and financial), providing three case studies, in a developed market (Australia) that are expanding rapidly into EMs (Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam) of Asia.

Findings

The elements of orientating, positioning and timing were identified as critical in the context of foreign entry, with the network perspective providing a useful theoretical explanation of this process and underpinning the conceptual framework. Key barriers to internationalisation in EMs for PSFs from developed markets are identified: face‐to‐face communication, language, cultural, work practices and government regulations. How PSFs use social networks to participate within EMs of Asia to overcome these barriers reveal that social network elements are critical to FME specifically into EMs: orientation, positioning and time.

Research limitations/implications

While the conceptual framework of key barriers and how PSF overcame them is theoretically supported by the findings, the framework could be tested more appropriately through an extended number of cases prior to a survey to provide generalizability.

Practical implications

Social networks were used by managers of PSFs to secure market knowledge and to act as a basis for strategic decision making, with foreign network actors a key influence in the foreign market entry process.

Originality/value

The paper provides a framework for identifying key barriers to internationalisation in EMs for PSFs.

Abstract

Effective manufacturing management calls for integration between strategic subsystems. In manufacturing, this means that decisions on structure and infrastructure must be co‐ordinated and support the competitive strategy. Traditionally, manufacturing management has, to a large extent, been reactive in nature, but today′s competitive situation calls for a more proactive manufacturing posture. In the article, a model for an integrated proactive manufacturing strategy is presented and suggested. This article presents empirical data in the form of case studies and survey analyses in the area of technology implementation. The survey data show that differences in the length of plan horizons for manufacturing technology, work organisation and control systems create significant problems in manufacturing, especially with personnel and quality issues. The case analyses show that this phenomenon in part can be explained by a lack of integration between these systems. Integration at an early stage is therefore concluded to be essential to the strategic capabilities at factory level. It is suggested that this integration is important to a proactive manufacturing strategy, and managerial implications are discussed.

Abstract

Performance improvement for requirements planning systems is an issue which receives wide interest. Many programming approaches have been proposed to improve material requirements planning procedures. However, most of them appear to be too complex for large manufacturing problems. Alternatively it might be promising to explore the integration of materials requirements planning and capacity requirements planning. Several simple heuristics for integrated requirements planning systems are suggested. Several heuristics are offered to balance the load in the systems and several procedures presented to adjust the planned requirements so that the system will execute more smoothly. An industrial example supports the adequacy of the general concepts provided in this research. Results are presented which demonstrate the adequacy of these heuristics, and illustrate the ease of implementing the procedures into any MRP system.
