Abstract

States that there has been much debate about the EC’s Social Charter but very little research on the implications for personnel managers. Personnel managers will be responsible for implementing the majority of Social Charter initiatives within their organizations. Based on the results from a postal survey of over 5,000 personnel managers across ten European countries, highlights the impact of the Social Charter on their organizations. Results show that: personnel managers are not as solely positive towards the Social Charter as expected; there appears to be a great deal of uncertainty among managers from a number of European countries – there is no pan‐European perspective at present – and; the perception that the UK is “dragging its feet” seems to be a misconception.

Abstract

Against a background of deregulatory change both within the UK and the broader European context, examines the future prospects for building society branch networks. Identifies the important determinants of change and discusses: technological innovations, the need for greater profitability, the threat from non‐bank retailers and the impact of the single European market. Discusses the implications of these processes and their possible effect on the future of building society branch networks. Focuses on practical strategic and management issues examining the implications of change for the recruitment and retention of branch staff, staff training and development, the status and role of branch managers and the measurement of branch performance.

Abstract

Outlines methodology for the Price Waterhouse Cranfield Project – an important new source of data on human resource management (HRM) in Europe. Places project in context of comparable sources and in relation to European framework. National data are collected by an annual survey of employing organisations to monitor over time the impact of the Single European Market (SEM) and to establish how far there is a shift towards “Strategic HRM”. Uses a functional definition of HRM. A postal questionnaire covers: HR departments and strategy; recruitment policies; pay and benefits policies; training policies and evaluation; contract and working hours flexibility; industrial relations; response to the SEM. Deals with problems of compatability of data across countries and languages, translation, industrial classification, sample size and distribution responses.

Abstract

NO MAN OF LETTERS has ever more closely identified himself with his country's historical lore and traditions than Sir Walter Scott: as poet and novelist his place in Scottish literature is secure. Abbotsford, the house he transformed into a replica of a medieval Scottish baronial castle, all turrets and gables, weapons and armour, is a national literary shrine. The memoirs of his life and work written by his son‐in‐law, John Gibson Lockhart, are widely acknowledged as a biographical tour de force. All this is well known and needs no emphasizing here. It is therefore all the more strange that the library he built at Abbotsford and the sizeable collection of books he amassed there have received very little attention in recent years. He has rarely been mentioned as one of the great book collectors, yet many of the books and broadsheets to be found in his library are now almost unprocurable elsewhere. A study of an eminent author's library always proves rewarding and the library at Abbotsford is no exception. Indeed, perhaps even more than usual, this particular library reflects the literary interests of its owner. Certainly, Scott's love of books very quickly emerges.

Abstract

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission adopted Regulation S in 1990 to clarify that offshore offers and sales of securities need not comply with the onerous registration requirements of US securities laws. In the short time since Regulation S was adopted, a number of issuers have abused the regulation. Amendments designed to curb these abuses have been recently proposed. This paper addresses the impact of the amendments and identifies significant issues to consider when undertaking a Regulation S transaction.

Abstract

The potential value of student learning research to applied fields cannot be overstated. Research needs to inform educationalists on how students learn with a view to improving teaching/learning systems. This brief review examines the work of major contributors such as Biggs, Marton, Schmeck, Entwistle and in particular Pask, who have looked at both the immediate orientations of learning strategies and at the more permanent phenomena of approaches and learning styles. The author has focused on the early work of these researchers to illustrate the foundation stone on which the research area has been built. Methodology will be examined and the degree to which a balance has been achieved between the conflicting demands of scientific rigour and ecological validity. It is argued that the subtle distinctions and insights drawn within both short term strategies and long term orientations to study were most usefully identified by Gordon Pask.

Abstract

This chapter includes a citation analysis of the first 16 volumes of Advances in Accounting Education: Teaching and Curriculum Innovations (henceforth, Advances in Accounting Education). Using this analysis, we identified the top 20 articles of the 195 articles published. This analysis provides an understanding of the relative contribution and impact of the papers published in Advances in Accounting Education, and the information provides past authors with a measure of how their contributions compare with the contributions of other authors. Also, this analysis may be valuable for potential contributors who are developing a research topic in that it will enable them to identify the types of articles that have traditionally had the greatest impact.

We also identify the top 30 authors of the 383 who have published in the journal. This analysis not only gives feedback to the authors listed, but also helps accounting education researchers identify authors whose work may be relevant to their interests.

We report the research categories (issues) and methodologies used for all articles published from 1998 to 2015 in Advances in Accounting Education. We also compare the research issues and research methodologies used in Advances in Accounting Education to those in the Journal of Accounting Education and Issues in Accounting Education for the period 2006–2015. Authors considering submitting a manuscript to one of these journals can use this information to determine which journal might be the best fit for their work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show the effect of cinnamoylmalononitrile (CMN) compounds on the corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in HCl and the effect of some substituent groups on the corrosion inhibition.

Design/methodology/approach

Several papers have been published (1900‐1999), which aimed to investigate and explain the effect of organic compounds on the corrosion inhibition process. Two methods were used to determine the corrosion rate, weight loss and galvanostatic polarization. Additionally, the effects of temperature and concentration of the inhibitors were studied. The thermodynamic parameters for the process were computed and discussed.

Findings

The paper finds that surface analytical techniques such as X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger spectroscopy can shed more light, on the mechanism of corrosion inhibition.

Research limitations/implications

The use of donating and withdrawing groups will improve understanding of the mechanisms of corrosion and inhibition. However, the paper does not use the technique of impedance measurement for comparison purposes.

Practical implications

Other steel alloys and compounds with large or small molecular weights can be used for comparison.

Originality/value

The use of CMN compounds as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in HCl provides more information on carbon steel corrosion for academic and starting researchers.
