Abstract

The Suzy Lamplugh Trust was set up after the headlined disappearance of a young estate agent, the author of the article and founder of the trust is Suzy Lamplugh′s mother. Aggression and violence in the workplace are discussed; women are seen not to be the risk factor of popular myth. Violence at work is a people problem. The Trust′s work includes research, publicity and the organisation of workplace training. The core of training is twofold: psychological (dealing with anxiety, attitudes and assertiveness) and practical (dealing with avoidance, anticipation and appropriate physical control of aggressors).

Endorsed by the Health and Safety Executive and others, the guidance offers help on policies and practices to tackle violence at work, risk assessment, hazard identification and preventative measures. Stresses that employees most at risk are those in contact with the general public and that the main aim is to create a safer working environment through co‐operation between employers and employees.

Abstract

Many British employers are less than enthusiastic about the Government's proposals to abolish the 26 wages councils which set statutory minimum wage rates for 2.5 million employees. In its response to the Department of Employment's Wages Councils: 1988 consultation document, the Institute of Personal Management continues to reject a “blanket” approach of total abolition of all wage's councils. The I.P.M.'s view, first formed in 1982 after a major review of the operation of wages councils, is in line with the recommendation of the House of Commons Employment Committee in 1985 that it is right to review and reform but not abolish wages councils.

Abstract

Adult protection is about prevention and, failing that, investigation and aftercare. This article describes innovative work in Powys, mid Wales, where trainers are working with vulnerable adults to help them to reduce the risk that they will be abused, or if the worst happens, where to turn for help. College staff have developed a course that runs on one afternoon a week for the academic year for people with learning disabilities. For people with mental health problems the approach had been workshop based, with a programme of six or eight workshops run by skilled trainers. For older people a third approach has been developed because there are so many older people who need to hear about Keeping Safe. After piloting one‐off workshops and presentations, the trainer has worked with staff and volunteers from a variety of agencies who already work with older people to train them as trainers working in pairs. Those who have received the training will be delivering sessions in luncheon clubs, day services, care homes etc.
