Abstract

In early 2002, Monash University Library trialled Fretwell‐Downing's ZPortal software. This software was designed to create seamless access to all the library's electronic online resources. Monash was one of the first libraries in the world to use the ZPortal software. The paper will discuss the reasons for adopting a portal, what was expected of the software, and the aims of the trial. In addition some outcomes of the trial will be discussed, as well as the practical maintenance issues that a system of this nature creates.

Abstract

The conference co‐ordinator and an invited speaker of the International Conference on Digital Libraries (ICDL) which took place in New Delhi, India, February 2004 provide an overview of the conference – one of a growing series of digital library conferences that bring together computer scientists and librarians. The objectives of this conference were to bridge the knowledge gaps between developing and developed countries; initiate capacity building activities in digital libraries; evolve a road map for the digitization of archives, manuscripts and libraries; provide a forum for facilitating interaction among participants; and formulate recommendations on digitization technologies and policies. Outlines the themes and topics covered and provides the main points of the inaugural address to the conference by the President of India as well as the three keynote addresses.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a practical laboratory task where final year undergraduate students design, implement and validate an inferred security wireless sensor access system.

Design/methodology/approach

The quality of the learning and technical environment was evaluated from a number of perspectives using a mixed methods approach where both quantitative and qualitative data was collected and analysed. Two‐tailed paired t‐tests were used to analyse data on student performance, while a targeted survey was used to assess the achievement of the learning outcomes. The students’ experience of working with the Sun Microsystems SunSPOTs was evaluated and the evolution of their perception of both ubiquity and security from inception to completion of the activity was explored.

Findings

The results of this study indicate that the students’ level of engagement with the assigned laboratory task was higher than with the two other forms of continuous assessment used on the module. Quantitative feedback gathered indicated that the learning outcomes were achieved, while the qualitative data indicated a high level of student satisfaction with the laboratory assignment.

Originality/value

A novel wireless sensor network laboratory that encourages students to engage with the concepts of ubiquity and security is presented and evaluated.

Abstract

Purpose

At present the energy generation and distribution landscape is changing rapidly. The energy grid is becoming increasingly smart, relying on an information network for the purposes of monitoring and optimization. However, because of the particularly stringent regulatory and technical constraints posed by smart grids, it is not possible to use ordinary communication protocols. The purpose of this paper is to revisit such constraints, reviewing the various options available today to realize smart‐metering networks.

Design/methodology/approach

After describing the regulatory, technological and stakeholders' constraints, the authors provide a taxonomy of network technologies, discussing their suitability and weaknesses in the context of smart‐metering systems. The authors also give a snapshot of the current standardization panorama, identifying key differences among various geographical regions.

Findings

It is found that the field of smart‐metering networks still consists of a fragmented set of standards and solutions, leaving open a number of issues relating to the design and deployment of suitable systems.

Originality/value

This paper addresses the need to better understand state‐of‐the‐art and open issues in the fast‐evolving area of smart energy grids, with particular attention to the challenges faced by communication engineers.

Abstract

In the Court of Appeal last summer, when Van Den Berghs and Jurgens Limited (belonging to the Unilever giant organization) sought a reversal of the decision of the trial judge that their television advertisements of Stork margarine did not contravene Reg. 9, Margarine Regulations, 1967—an action which their Lordships described as fierce but friendly—there were some piercing criticisms by the Court on the phrasing of the Regulations, which was described as “ridiculous”, “illogical” and as “absurdities”. They also remarked upon the fact that from 1971 to 1975, after the Regulations became operative, and seven years from the date they were made, no complaint from enforcement authorities and officers or the organizations normally consulted during the making of such regulations were made, until the Butter Information Council, protecting the interests of the dairy trade and dairy producers, suggested the long‐standing advertisements of Reg. 9. An example of how the interests of descriptions and uses of the word “butter” infringements of Reg. 9. An example af how the interests of enforcement, consumer protection, &c, are not identical with trade interests, who see in legislation, accepted by the first, as injuring sections of the trade. (There is no evidence that the Butter Information Council was one of the organizations consulted by the MAFF before making the Regulations.) The Independant Broadcasting Authority on receiving the Council's complaint and obtaining legal advice, banned plaintiffs' advertisements and suggested they seek a declaration that the said advertisements did not infringe the Regulations. This they did and were refused such a declaration by the trial judge in the Chancery Division, whereupon they went to the Court of Appeal, and it was here, in the course of a very thorough and searching examination of the question and, in particular, the Margarine Regulations, that His Appellate Lordship made use of the critical phrases we have quoted.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to model the perceived value and customers’ intention to continue using m-banking services, assuming the existence of multiple consumption values. Specifically, it is proposed that entertainment (hedonic value), ubiquity (utilitarian value) and novelty seeking (epistemic value) impact m-banking overall perceived value, which in turn influences customers’ reuse intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey with 260 Macedonian current users of m-banking services was carried out, using questionnaires as a method of data collection. Five-point Likert scales adapted from the relevant literature to the context of m-banking services were used to measure the variables. PLS-SEM approach was employed to estimate the proposed model.

Findings

The findings indicate that bank entities can increase customers’ intention to reuse m-banking, by providing an enriched perceived value of m-banking services, precisely putting emphasis on perceived value drivers related to utilitarian value (ubiquity) and epistemic value (novelty seeking). Hedonic value (perceived entertainment) does not show a significant influence on the perception of m-banking value.

Originality/value

This study provides a different perspective of the perceived value observation, by contemplating not only the well-established hedonic and utilitarian aspects of value, but also the epistemic component, considered as a vital element in contexts of mobile technologies adoption. Moreover, this is the first study to explore the m-banking perceived value in a developing country in the Balkans.
