Abstract
Purpose
Triple helix theory stresses co‐evolution and interaction among governments, enterprises and universities, and is paid great attention by governments, universities and enterprises worldwide. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role that Chinese government R&D investments play in the interaction between enterprises and universities.
Design/methodology/approach
Basing on provincial panel data of Chinese universities from 2004‐2010, the impact of government R&D investments on patent technology transfer activities of Chinese universities is studied by empirical analysis. More specifically, the paper examines the impact of both Chinese government R&D funding and national R&D programs on the number and the revenue of patent technology transfer contracts.
Findings
The study finds that the amount of government R&D funding and the number of 973 Programs in one region have significantly increased the number and the revenue of patent technology transfer contracts in that region. Moreover, the number of National S&T Pillar Programs, 863 Program and National Natural Science Foundation Program are also determinants of the number of patent technology transfer contracts.
Originality/value
This paper studies government's role in university‐enterprise patent technology transfer activities in a Chinese context. It reveals a government‐dominant position to promote patent technology transfer activities in Chinese triple helix model. It also provides a reference for decision makers in governments, industries and universities.

Abstract
Purpose
How does the regional institutional environment of China’s transitional economy influence the relationship between a firm’s R&D investment intensity and innovation performance? Based on the resource-based view and institution-based view, an empirical study was executed to identify the moderating effects of institutional environment variables from the Marketization Index of China’s Provinces: National Economic Research Institute (NERI) Report on the relationship between a firm’s R&D investment intensity and innovation performance. This paper aims to study how effectively improve the impact of R&D investment intensity on innovation performance under the influence of the institutional environment.
Design/methodology/approach
Against the background of China’s transitional economy, the authors present empirical evidence from panel data covering 374 Chinese A-share listed high-tech manufacturing firms on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange to examine the relationship between R&D investment intensity and innovation performance.
Findings
Empirical results illustrate the following: The R&D investment intensity and innovation performance displayed an inverse U-shaped relationship, and R&D investment intensity had a lagged effect on R&D output according to the uncertainty and industrialization period of R&D activities. The level of financial market development can intensify the effects of R&D investment intensity on innovation performance. The degree of government intervention weakens the effect of R&D investment intensity on innovation performance.
Originality/value
Based on the background of China’s institutional environment during the transition period, combined with previous research and the Marketization Index of China’s Provinces: NERI Report, selecting financial market development, government intervention level and legalization level as moderating variables to study how effectively improve the impact of R&D investment intensity on innovation performance under the influence of the institutional environment. Due to the different ownership of firms during the transition period, the appropriate impact of the institutional environment on the relationship between R&D investment intensity and innovation performance will vary. Moreover, the level of legalization would impact on innovation insignificantly.

Abstract
The phenomenon of creativity spans research topics across Marketing and Consumer Behavior. Interest in, and research on, creativity has grown over the past several decades. With this heightened attention comes the question of how best to conceptualize and measure creativity. This question is addressed by reviewing the conceptualizations and measures used in the psychological study of creativity. From this review, we build a framework by which to analyze papers from the Journal of Consumer Research and the Journal of Marketing Research. Based upon this analysis, we provide recommendations and best practices for future research. Of particular importance, we recommend the use of convergent problem-solving tasks in combination with ratings of novelty and usefulness reported separately. Such measures allow one to distinguish between instances of effective-creativity (when an idea is both novel and useful) and instances of quasi-creativity (when an idea is novel but lacks usefulness). The importance of the framework to research and analysis beyond the experimental paradigm is discussed.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing on power approach-inhibition theory, this study aims to theorize a cross-level model to examine how team member personal power (i.e. expert power and referent power) impacts shared leadership through activating their taking charge behaviors in R&D teams, as well as the moderating effect of team learning orientation on the relationship between team member taking charge behaviors and shared leadership.
Design/methodology/approach
With multisource data collected from 264 employees in 58 R&D teams from 13 companies, this study tested the hypotheses of the cross-level theoretical model using Mplus 7.4.
Findings
The results showed that team member expert power was positively related to their taking charge behaviors, which in turn led to shared leadership, while team member referent power was not significantly related to their taking charge behaviors. Furthermore, the positive relationship between team member taking charge behaviors and shared leadership was strengthened by team learning orientation.
Practical implications
This paper offers suggestions regarding how vertical leaders should pay attention to team member power to promote their change-oriented taking charge behaviors and address team learning to strengthen the effect of team member taking charge behaviors on shared leadership.
Originality/value
By echoing the changing focus towards a shared leading process among team members in leadership literature, this paper provides important insights for both scholars and practitioners to understand the role that power plays in activating team member taking charge behaviors which in turn improves shared leadership.

Purpose
This paper aims to solve the lubrication failures in the turning arm bearing of RV reducer, give some help in perfecting the bearing structure design and provide theoretical basis for the reducer’s performance improvement.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper establishes a mixed lubrication analysis model to study performance parameters. According to the discretization of parameters and iteration of equations, numerical simulation and theoretical analysis are achieved in computational process.
Findings
Considering influences of contact load, real rough surface and realistic geometry of RV reducer turning arm roller bearing, the mixed lubrication analysis model is established to study the ratio of oil film thickness, pressure distribution and maximum von Mises stress in different speeds, temperatures and fillets. The results of mixed lubrication show that reasonable round corner modification, increase in temperature and speed, decrease of surface roughness and lubricant types can improve the lubrication performance.
Originality/value
The mixed lubrication analysis model is established to study the influences of contact load, real rough surface and realistic geometry of RV reducer turning arm roller bearing. Different speed, temperature, lubricant and fillet modification are also considered in the research to analyze oil film thickness, pressure distribution and maximum von Mises stress. These studies can optimize structural design of bearing and direct engineer operations.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to compare the tribological performances of four different types of tooth surface finishing, namely, form grinding, generating grinding, super finishing and grinding and coating, and to reveal the details at dry contact nodes.
Design/methodology/approach
Real measured roughness is input to a finite line contact mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model developed for helical gear pairs. Their tribological performances are compared. The variation throughout one meshing period is analyzed. The influence of the root mean square (RMS) is studied. The textures are also scaled to the same RMS values to make comparisons while excluding the influence of roughness amplitude.
Findings
Roughness is directly reflected in pressure and film thickness. Average film thickness sees major changes while entering and leaving the single-tooth-contact region. The textures have different performances even under the same RMS. Roughness peaks incurring dry contact are those higher than the smooth-situation film thickness plus the sum of variation in normal approach and elastic deformation compared with the smooth situation. To lower dry contact severity, the surface finishing process should take care of both the overall amplitude and the portion of peaks with maximum height. When RMS value is the same, the latter plays a decisive role.
Originality/value
This paper interprets the differences between the tribological performances of four different types of tooth surface finishing from the aspect of roughness features and presents a way to analyze the details at dry contact nodes.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to introduce a novel approach to the fabrication of photoluminescent materials by coating rare earth aluminate luminescent materials on metallic substrates and a readily manufacturable light source with robust structure in the form of photoluminescent sphere (APS).
Design/methodology/approach
The clean and dried stainless steel sphere was sprayed with UH 2593, a white undercoat, the luminescent coating and the weather resistance coating in chronological order.
Findings
After adhered onto the stainless steel sphere, the peaks corresponding to the N-H stretching vibrations were changed. The intensity of free N-H stretching at 3,536 cm−1 dramatically decreased and the peak of hydrogen-bonded N-H stretching of PU moved to lower wavenumbers. The red shift of the infrared bands of functional groups was attributed to the strengthened hydrogen bonding. The hydrogen bonding interactions between the stainless steel substrates and the polyurethane coating endowed the APS with excellent adhesive property and also promoted the evenly distribution of the photoluminescent particles in the polymer coating matrix.
Practical implications
This approach can be applicable in the fabrication of the photoluminescent materials. The APS can be used as signs and guiding post in remote areas without sufficient electricity supply and in the seas and rivers with complicated hydrological conditions.
Originality/value
This approach has provided a method to produce tough and durable luminescent signs for remote areas and dangerous seas and explained the functional mechanism of the combined application of metallic materials and non-metallic materials.

Multinational corporations (MNCs) are converging world cultures by creating common consumer lifestyles across countries through standardized products. However, little is known about how consumers’ exposure to foreign cultures affects their purchase experience from the country. This study explores this gap in the literature by investigating how consumers’ exposure to foreign cultural source (e.g., entertainment) shapes their attitude toward its country. This attitude is conceptualized to influence the perceived product quality and corporate ability of the country’s MNCs, which are further hypothesized to influence consumers’ purchase experience with products offered by the MNCs. Furthermore, the impact of product quality and corporate ability on consumer purchase experience is expected to be moderated by consumer ethnocentrism. The study framework is tested in the context of the Korean Wave (or “Hallyu”) using data consisting of 533 Indonesian consumers. The results support most of the study hypotheses. Theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
Purpose
This study focuses on the CFD numerical simulation and analysis of the vortex stacking problem at the top of the impeller of a high-speed fuel pump, mainly using LCS and entropy production theory to visualize the vortex at the top of the impeller as well as quantitatively analyzing the energy loss caused by the vortex at the top of the impeller. By combining the two methods, the two are well verified with each other that the stacking problem of the vortex at the top of the impeller and the location of the energy loss caused by the vortex are consistent with the vortex location. Such a method can reveal the problem of vortex buildup at the top of the lobe well, and provide a novel guidance idea for improving the performance of high-speed fuel pumps.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on CFD numerical simulation and analysis, this study mainly uses LCS and entropy production theory to visualize the top vortex of the impeller. Through the combination of the two methods, the accumulation problem of the top vortex of the impeller and the location of the energy loss caused by the vortex can be well revealed.
Findings
(1) The CFD numerical simulation analysis of the high-speed fuel pump is carried out, and the test is conducted to verify the numerical simulation results. The inlet and outlet pressure difference? P is used as the validation index, and the error analysis shows that the error between numerical simulation and test results is within 10%, which meets our requirements. Therefore, we carry out the next analysis with the help of CFD numerical simulation. By analyzing the full working condition simulation, its inlet and outlet differential pressure? P and efficiency? Are evaluated. It is found that its differential pressure decreases with the flow rate and its efficiency reaches its maximum at Qv = 9.87 L/s with a maximum efficiency of 78.32%. (2) We used the LCS in the analysis of vortices at the top of the impeller blades of a high-speed fuel pump. One of the metrics used to describe the LCS in fluid dynamics is the FTLE. The high FTLE region represents the region with the highest and fastest particle trajectory stretching velocity in the fluid flow. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the FTLE field on the different height surfaces of the impeller on 25% Plane, 50% Plane, and 75% Plane, respectively. And a quarter turn of the rotor rotation was analyzed as a cycle divided into 8 moments. It is found that on 25% Plane, the vortex at the top of the lobe is not obvious, but there are high FTLE values on the shroud surface. On 50% Plane, the lobe top vortex is relatively obvious and the number of vortices is three. The vortex pattern remains stable with the rotating motion of the rotor. At 75% Plane, the lobe top vortex is more visible and its number of vortices increases to about 5 and the vortex morphology is relatively stable. The FTLE ridges visualize the vortex profile. This is a good guide for fluid dynamics analysis. (3) At the same time, we use the entropy production theory to quantitatively analyze the energy loss, and define the entropy production rate Ep. Through the entropy production analysis of the impeller shroud surface and the suction surface of the pressure surface of the blades at eight moments, we find that the areas of high energy loss are mainly concentrated in the leading and trailing edges of the blades as well as in the shroud surface close to the leading edge of the blades, and the value of the entropy production rate is up to 106 W/m3/K. The areas of high energy loss in the leading edge of the blades as well as the trailing edge show a curved arc, and the energy loss is decreasing as it moves away from the shroud surface and closer to the hub surface. The high energy loss areas at the leading and trailing edges of the blades are curved, and the energy loss decreases as they move away from the shroud surface and closer to the hub surface. The energy loss at the pressure surface of the blade is relatively small, about 5 × 105 W/m3/K, which is mainly concentrated near the leading edge of the blade near the shroud surface and the trailing edge of the blade near the hub surface. Such energy loss corresponds to the vortex LCS at the top of the impeller, and the two mirror each other.
Originality/value

Abstract
The US-China trade war has brought forth the problem of balance of trade not only for them, but also for many other economies in the world. However, all the commodity segments are not equally affected and thus, the segment-wise trade analysis of commodities can bring up many valuable insights, vital for policy formulation process. Despite this, existing literature barely covered this aspect as a focal research. Therefore, this chapter has carried out segment-wise analysis of commodity classes popular in international trade discussions for the United States and China since the trade dispute intensified between them. In this chapter, we have built an argument around three commodity-segments which are popular in international trade studies namely, the raw material segment, semi-finished goods segment, and finished goods segments. While doing this analysis, we majorly focused on monopolistic power of economies in different commodity segments. We found that while in the segment of raw material, mostly cost is driving the trade, in the finished goods segment, variety and innovations are the key drivers that can boost trade by discovering new consumption spaces.
