Abstract

“As in other fields of lubrication and processing, the incorporation of various chemical additive materials to straight mineral oils can reinforce intrinsic desirable properties or impart new properties necessary to the high performance expected of today's metalworking lubricants and coolants”.

Abstract

In the fabricating and finishing operations of glass, various lubricant type processing aids are employed to achieve the high production and quality which has characterized the mechanization and revolutionary progress in the glass industry since 1900.

Abstract

THE GENERAL principles of yarn production from loose textile fibres are much the same whatever the fibre. First, they are freed from impurities (e.g., wool scouring and carbonization) then mixed and blended. This is followed by attenuation and further mixing by combination of laps or slivers, followed by still more attenuation (carding) to ensure uniformity in fibre material. To eliminate very short fibres and ensure that in the sliver the fibres are all within certain length limits, further processes are employed such as gilling in worsted yarn manufacture. Further parallelization of fibres is obtained by combing (worsted yarn) and by repeated drawing or drafting until a degree of twist is necessarily introduced to continue holding the fibres together. The sliver then becomes known as roving and in this form the uniform fibre is twisted into yarn on spinning machines.

Abstract

IT IS THE practice among some large users of ‘soluble’ cutting oils, such as motor manufacturers, to issue specifications imposing pH limitations on the oil in emulsion form. Although the limits fixed may vary widely among different users, the reasons for the particular level chosen are identical and invariably originate from the company medical department through their efforts to control factors likely to contribute to occupational dermatoses.

Abstract

SOME thousands of tonnes of kerosine, or similar hydrocarbon fraction, and hundreds of tonnes of surface active agents are employed annually in the UK production of emulsifiable solvent degreasants. They are generally employed as “extensive” type cleaners of oil‐soiled surfaces of machinery, vehicles, floors, paintwork and degreasing operations in general. In some applications of metal component production for example, they are used for their relatively “intensive” cleaning ability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address how context for malingering and the provision of incentives influence malingered symptom profiles of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Design/methodology/approach

A 2 (case context)×3 (incentive) factorial design was utilized. Participants (n=298) were given an incentive (positive, negative, or no incentive), randomly assigned to a criminal or civil context, and asked to provide a fake claim of child abuse with corresponding malingered symptoms of PTSD. Under these conditions, participants completed several questionnaires pertaining to symptoms of trauma and PTSD.

Findings

Results indicated that negative incentives were primarily associated with lower symptom scores. Therefore, “having something to lose” may result in more constrained (and realistic) symptom reports relative to exaggeration evidenced with positive incentives.

Originality/value

These results have implications for forensic settings where malingered claims of PTSD are common and incentives for such claims (e.g. having something to gain or lose) frequently exist. Previous studies have failed to address incentives (positive and negative) in relation to a crime (i.e. abuse) that can span both criminal and civil contexts.

Abstract

The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess the relationship between volunteer leadership competencies and stewardship action-taking experiences among Master Gardener (MG) and Master Watershed (MW) volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic. We collected data from 1196 Penn State Extension MG and MW respondents. The mean summative score for the volunteer stewardship action-taking experience was 2.32 (SD = .79), and volunteer leadership competencies was 3.45 (SD = .60). The results of this study showed a significant moderate association between volunteer stewardship action-taking experiences and volunteer leader competencies (r = .34, p ≤ .001). Volunteer leadership competencies can explain approximately 11 % of the variation in volunteer stewardship action-taking experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new knowledge that our research brings can significantly contribute to the practice in leadership teaching and learning of Extension organizations’ volunteers. Future leadership trainings on the enhancement of the MG and MW volunteer leaders’ stewardship action-taking capacity can help contribute to the greater good in their communities in a more confident and efficient manner. Further research should focus on identifying other factors that can affect MG and MW stewardship action-taking experiences, including the impact of the demographics and motivation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to give a starting point to non‐specialists to understand Sufism by introducing the essential works about this broad subject.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper identifies and lists bibliographies, indexes, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and handbooks about Sufism.

Findings

Interest in Sufism is growing, and references to books, articles, essays, and even theses and dissertations under the subject headings Sufism and Sufis are now considerable. Resources are scattered, posing challenges to students and scholars, as well as librarians. Additionally, there is a deficiency of specialized databases, bibliographies, and indexes related to Sufism.

Originality/value

To date, this is the only guide of this kind.
