Abstract

Purpose

This study introduces an ecological framework for disabilities meant to provide a new model of viewing and learning about disabilities and special education. This model projects a multi-systemic view of factors that influence a person's life, where people with disabilities are active actors in the development of the world. The increased awareness about interconnectedness, globalization, inter- and trans-disciplinarity, influences on human experience, greening, sustainability, inequality, inequity and lack of opportunities is shifting how people think about potential and growth.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodological approach is qualitative, interpretive research.

Findings

In disability studies, the Ecological Model of Disabilities helps reframe this uniqueness as part of the spectrum of human experiences. In special education, the Ecoducation Model helps reframe the learning experience.

Research limitations/implications

This research is conceptual, but it is also all-inclusive, rendering itself to a wide application in educational settings.

Practical implications

The Ecoducation Model for Special Education is specific to the education of children and adults with disabilities, and it is directly compatible with the broader Ecological Model of Disabilities. These ecological models can be applied to all levels of the ecological system, and to different ecodemes of population. Nevertheless, the ecological models need to be locally implemented, with general principles tailored to national traditions, laws and resources.

Social implications

Advocating for the pursuit of individual well-being within the larger society, both models call for practical changes in a multitude of areas, including legislation and policy, training of professional personnel, sufficient financial input in programs designed for the care of children and adults with disabilities, change in societal mentalities to fight discrimination, disempowerment and isolation. Because the scope of ecological frameworks is incommensurate, being both interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, further research possibilities are countless. The ecological perspective opens the fields of disability studies and special education to new theoretical and empirical possibilities.

Originality/value

Two epistemological models are described as new frameworks in disability studies: the Ecological Model of Disabilities and the Ecoducation Model for Special Education. Both are original models that look into the education and inclusion of the person with disabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study is to explore Generation Z’s interpretation of educational practices at the secondary education level. By examining the expectations of Generation Z, this study aims to provide insights for teachers and decision-makers to improve educational and instructional practices.

Design/methodology/approach

The specific approach employed in this study is Transcendental Phenomenology (TPh), which focuses on uncovering the perceived experiences, thoughts and evaluations of the Gen Z generation toward formal education. For this study, the maximum variation sampling strategy, which is one of the purposive sampling methods, was utilized. In line with the nature of the design, one-on-one interviews were conducted to collect data. Thematic analysis, a commonly used method for identifying recurring patterns of meaning, was applied to analyze the data. Peer debriefing or analytic triangulation, Data saturation, Triangulation and member checking techniques were operated to support the validity and reliability of the study.

Findings

In the light of the data analysis, four themes emerged: expectations from teachers, curricula, school administration and School Counseling Service (SCS). Gen Z expects from teachers “to be democratic, to adopt novel teaching approaches and technology, to have affective qualities, to be attentive to arts and sports, to conduct qualified assessment.” Gen Z has also expectations regarding the curricula in practice such as “functionality, extracurricular activities, and instructional practices.” The expectations of the students from school administration include “administrative expectations,” “expectations regarding the learning environment” and “social expectations.” The participants had expectations regarding School Counseling Service (SCS) such as “professional guidance,” “academic guidance” and “career guidance.” “Career guidance” includes “introduction of career paths,” “academic guidance” includes “introduction of university programs,” “exam guidance” and “teacher training” and “personal guidance” includes “accessibility,” “equity in guidance services,” “communication” and “functionality.”

Research limitations/implications

The research is limited to the volunteers included in the study. In addition, the study includes only senior high school students, 12th graders, representing Gen Z. In addition, the study includes only Gen Z living in a metropolitan city. The methodological limitation of the study is that only one-to-one interview technique was used for data collection. The main reason behind such a choice is that the most appropriate technique for data collection in the phenomenology method is one-on-one interviews in order to explore individual interpretation.

Practical implications

The research sheds light on many different points in terms of different applications. One of the results obtained in this context is curriculum. Gen Z criticizes the limitation of the program to only in-school learning and states that extracurricular practices should be included. Findings also presents implications regarding learning environments. There is a growing emphasis by Gen Z on the adoption of green, comfortable and interactive learning spaces. The Generation Z population expects teachers to possess digital competence (DC) and utilize it in their teaching practices. This shows that teachers' teaching competencies need to be upskilled.

Social implications

It is crucial for policymakers to support the development of teachers' digital skills and encourage their integration into teaching to enhance instructional productivity, promote innovative learning, increase instructional appeal, foster teamwork, improve communication and facilitate innovative learning. The research reveals that Gen Z is a social phenomenon and needs to be recognized and their learning needs explored. In this context, it is imperative that the preferences and learning needs of Gen Z are considered in the learning environment, content, method-technique and assessment stages, especially in formal education practices.

Originality/value

The current research is important both in terms of filling the research gap in the literature and making inferences about the learning preferences of the GEN Z generation. In addition, it raises awareness in terms of the return on educational investments, providing sustainable motivation for learning and school and increasing the quality of learning outcomes. While the study reveals certain implications, further research is required to investigate the competencies of teachers, the effectiveness of teaching materials, instructional practices and designs and learning environments. Future studies should particularly concentrate on the personal preferences, motivation, engagement and learning preferences of Gen Z at the secondary level. Authorities, including teachers, ought to reassess their perspectives and adapt their practices in order to better meet the needs and expectations of Gen Z.

Abstract

Purpose

In light of the technological advancements and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on educational systems, universities worldwide had to find new methods to ensure that the educational process continued. In many countries, including Egypt, it has become a priority to direct their institutions toward digital transformation, using electronic means in the educational process. A set of challenges emerged in the educational process, especially in architectural learning, focusing on the design studio; problems intensified and some professors rejected the idea of distance learning, announcing their strong adherence to traditional face-to-face learning. This research aims to find a methodology that informs the choice of digital technology in architectural design courses.

Design/methodology/approach

The researchers used both qualitative and quantitative methodology based on inductive, analytical, interview-questionnaire and empirical studies in Egypt.

Findings

Results show that many criteria affect the selection of proper applications. Also, using multiple applications in architecture design course helps students understand the material. However, hybrid learning is crucial in teaching architectural design since it cannot be effectively conveyed solely through distance learning.

Originality/value

The results of the research will help improve and develop the distance learning system in architectural education by proposing a methodology for choosing suitable electronic tools for architecture studio courses. These courses enhance the effectiveness of students' understanding and comprehension during the distance learning process to increase motivation for thinning development, imagination and educational skills.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the correlation between economic development and scientific knowledge production indicators in the BRICS countries from 2000 to 2020, highlighting the importance of human resources, natural resources, and innovation. Addressing a gap in the existing literature, this study aims to contribute significantly to understanding this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing a descriptive statistical approach, this study utilizes GDP and per capita income as economic indicators and scientific data from WoS and SCOPUS databases, focusing on scientific document production and citations per document.

Findings

The analysis reveals a strong correlation between economic development and scientific performance within the BRICS nations during the specified period. It emphasizes the interdependence of economic progress and scientific prowess, underscoring that they cannot be considered independently.

Research limitations/implications

However, limitations exist, notably the reliance on specific databases that might not cover the entire scientific output and the inability to capture all factors influencing economic and scientific development.

Originality/value

Understanding this interdependence has crucial originality. Policymakers and stakeholders in BRICS countries can leverage these insights to prioritize investments in human capital development and scientific research. This approach can foster sustainable economic growth by reducing reliance on natural resources.

Abstract

Purpose

This article investigates the application of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in experiential learning for authentic assessment in higher education. Recognized for its human-like content generation, GenAI has garnered widespread interest, raising concerns regarding its reliability, ethical considerations and overall impact. The purpose of this study is to explore the transformative capabilities and limitations of GenAI for experiential learning.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses “thing ethnography” and “incremental prompting” to delve into the perspectives of ChatGPT 3.5, a prominent GenAI model. Through semi-structured interviews, the research prompts ChatGPT 3.5 on critical aspects such as conceptual clarity, integration of GenAI in educational settings and practical applications within the context of authentic assessment. The design examines GenAI’s potential contributions to reflective thinking, hands-on learning and genuine assessments, emphasizing the importance of responsible use.

Findings

The findings underscore GenAI’s potential to enhance experiential learning in higher education. Specifically, the research highlights GenAI’s capacity to contribute to reflective thinking, hands-on learning experiences and the facilitation of genuine assessments. Notably, the study emphasizes the significance of responsible use in harnessing the capabilities of GenAI for educational purposes.

Originality/value

This research showcases the application of GenAI in operations management education, specifically within lean health care. The study offers insights into its capabilities by exploring the practical implications of GenAI in a specific educational domain through thing ethnography and incremental prompting. Additionally, the article proposes future research directions, contributing to the originality of the work and opening avenues for further exploration in the integration of GenAI in education.
