Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and understand China’s rural farmers’ financing intention of inclusive finance, and it examines related drivers like knowledge of inclusive finance, perceived benefits and perceived risks of ordering finance. Besides, the social enterprise embeddedness and digital finance are integrated into the conceptual model to further investigate their moderating impact.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors designed an inclusive finance intention model to examine the relations between dependent variable knowledge of inclusive finance, intermediary variables perceived benefits and perceived risks of ordering finance and the independent variable financing intention of inclusive finance. The embeddedness of social enterprise and digital finance were identified as modifying factors. Both exploratory and conclusive research strategies were applied. A structured questionnaire was developed to collect empirical data from the rural areas of China.

Findings

It suggests that knowledge of inclusive finance can strengthen both perceived benefits and perceived risk of ordering finance. Interestingly, the embeddness of social enterprise can significantly reduce risk perceptions and improve perceived benefits of ordering finance. Furthermore, perceived benefits of ordering finance can positively enhance rural farmers’ financing intention of inclusive finance, whereas perceived risks can negatively influence the financing intention. Moreover, digital finance as a modifying factor can significantly strengthen the positive correlation between perceived benefits of ordering finance and financing intention of inclusive finance.

Practical implications

The research indicates that a systematic inclusive finance educational project is needed to enhance rural farmers’ understanding of inclusive finance and its components. Moreover, the study reveals that it is crucial to promote social enterprise participation and digital finance to develop inclusive finance in rural China, as the service attributes of social enterprise and efficiency of digital finance can greatly reduce the existing transaction cost of farmers.

Originality/value

The conceptual model would potentially contribute to researchers interested in investigating the financing intention of inclusive financial services relating to rural population. The integration of social enterprise embeddedness and digital finance is the uniqueness of this research conceptual model.

Take the image of the entrepreneur as a driven accepter of risk, an individual (or set of individuals) hungry to amass a fortune as quickly as possible. This image is consistent with the traditional finance theory view of entrepreneurial startups, one that assumes that profit maximization is the firm’s sole motivation (Chaganti, DeCarolis & Deeds, 1995). Myers’s (1994) cost explanation of the pecking order hypothesis (i.e. entrepreneurs prefer internally generated funds first, debt next, and external equity last) incorporates this economically rational view of entrepreneurs’ financing preferences. According to this view, information asymmetry and uncertainty make the availability of external financing very limited and the cost of it prohibitively high. To compensate, entrepreneurs must give up greater and greater control in order to “buy” funds needed to achieve the desired growth and profitability. Indeed, Brophy and Shulman (1992, p. 65) state, “Those entrepreneurs willing to relinquish absolute independence in order to maximize expected shareholder wealth through corporate growth are deemed rational investors in the finance literature.” Undoubtedly, cost and availability explanations of financing choices are valid for many new and small businesses. However, many entrepreneurship researchers have long been dissatisfied with the incompleteness of this perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

Crowdfunding as an alternative financing method has recently gained ground and become a legitimate and feasible option for supporting creative and cultural projects. Whereas the reasons behind raising money on crowdfunding platforms are easy to understand, there is still a knowledge gap concerning backer’s motivations to fund creative projects. The aim of this study is to investigate backers’ main motivations to contribute to movies and web series crowdfunding projects.

Design/methodology/approach

Using PLS-SEM, we analyzed the influence of intrinsic motivation, inner innovativeness, shared values and campaign involvement on perceived trust and perceived risk; the last two were further analyzed in relation to their influence on participation intention (N = 432). Data was collected from Europe and Asia using convenience and snowball sampling through a structured questionnaire.

Findings

Perceived trust was found to be positively influenced by intrinsic motivation, shared values and campaign involvement, and perceived risk was surprisingly found to be positively influenced by campaign involvement. Also, perceived trust as generated by platform and crowdfundraiser jointly and perceived risk have a positive influence on participation intention.

Research limitations/implications

This study is a useful tool in the hands of filmmakers and web series producers in the process of crowdfunding campaign design and for the crowdfund platform owner, who will seek to enhance perceived trust in order to attract larger audiences and increase profitability.

Originality/value

This is an original first study to examine the intentions of people from Europe and Asia toward movie and web series crowdfunding projects.

Abstract

Purpose

Financial service providers are facing challenges in the acceptance of digital financial services. The study, therefore, intends to identify factors contributing towards the adoption of digital finance. It has worked on the influencers and demotivators of digital finance adoption by individuals. These influencers are labelled as perceived benefits and demotivators as perceived risks. In addition to perceived benefit and risk, the study has also included the difference in perception on the basis of generation cohort.

Design/methodology/approach

The data have been collected through a structured questionnaire from 411 respondents. Partial least squares structured equation modelling (PLS-SEM) has been used to analyse the proposed model on SmartPLS.

Findings

The findings suggested that the benefits were more influential in adoption behaviour than perceived risk. In addition to perceived benefit and risk, the study has also included the difference in perception on the basis of generation cohort. The results summarised that benefits had a more significant impact in Generation Z (Gen Z) than in Millennials.

Research limitations/implications

The evaluation and categorisation of perceived risk and benefits into meaningful dimensions generate value to the adoption behaviour of digital finance. Thus, the findings are useful for the policymakers and researchers to contemplate the perception of individuals in digital finance based on the generation cohort.

Originality/value

The empirical findings of the present research contribute to limited evidence of a relationship between perceived risk, perceived benefit and digital finance adoption on the basis of generation cohort.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the determinants of financing preference of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) whilst distinguishing a broader range of financing sources beyond what is typically the case within the corporate finance literature.

Design/methodology/approach

Under the framework of ordinal logistic regression, the paper also tests whether there is evidence of hierarchical preference ordering as predicted by pecking order theory (POH) using field survey data for 2009.

Findings

The authors relate that new enterprises are more likely to prefer low cost and less risky or less formal financing such as internal or bootstrap finances. However, as the enterprise gets established or matures, its capacity to seek formal financing increases, thereby becoming more likely to prefer or being in a higher category of formal financing. While the paper affirms the POH, it is argued that this order is a consequence of severe persistent constraints other than sheer preference. The findings further reveal that, microentrepreneur's and MSE's‐specific level socio‐economic characteristics such as owner's education or financial literacy status, households tangible assets, ownership structure, enterprise size, as well as sensitivity to high interest rates in the credit market, to be important determinants of either past (start‐up), present or future financing preference.

Originality/value

The main value of this paper is to analyse the determinants of financing preference of MSEs within the context of rural financial market (RFM) from a developing country perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to systematically review the literature published in recognized journals focused on cognitive heuristic-driven biases and their effect on investment management activities and market efficiency. It also includes some of the research work on the origins and foundations of behavioral finance, and how this has grown substantially to become an established and particular subject of study in its own right. The study also aims to provide future direction to the researchers working in this field.

Design/methodology/approach

For doing research synthesis, a systematic literature review (SLR) approach was applied considering research studies published within the time period, i.e. 1970–2021. This study attempted to accomplish a critical review of 176 studies out of 256 studies identified, which were published in reputable journals to synthesize the existing literature in the behavioral finance domain-related explicitly to cognitive heuristic-driven biases and their effect on investment management activities and market efficiency as well as on the origins and foundations of behavioral finance.

Findings

This review reveals that investors often use cognitive heuristics to reduce the risk of losses in uncertain situations, but that leads to errors in judgment; as a result, investors make irrational decisions, which may cause the market to overreact or underreact – in both situations, the market becomes inefficient. Overall, the literature demonstrates that there is currently no consensus on the usefulness of cognitive heuristics in the context of investment management activities and market efficiency. Therefore, a lack of consensus about this topic suggests that further studies may bring relevant contributions to the literature. Based on the gaps analysis, three major categories of gaps, namely theoretical and methodological gaps, and contextual gaps, are found, where research is needed.

Practical implications

The skillful understanding and knowledge of the cognitive heuristic-driven biases will help the investors, financial institutions and policymakers to overcome the adverse effect of these behavioral biases in the stock market. This article provides a detailed explanation of cognitive heuristic-driven biases and their influence on investment management activities and market efficiency, which could be very useful for finance practitioners, such as an investor who plays at the stock exchange, a portfolio manager, a financial strategist/advisor in an investment firm, a financial planner, an investment banker, a trader/broker at the stock exchange or a financial analyst. But most importantly, the term also includes all those persons who manage corporate entities and are responsible for making their financial management strategies.

Originality/value

Currently, no recent study exists, which reviews and evaluates the empirical research on cognitive heuristic-driven biases displayed by investors. The current study is original in discussing the role of cognitive heuristic-driven biases in investment management activities and market efficiency as well as the history and foundations of behavioral finance by means of research synthesis. This paper is useful to researchers, academicians, policymakers and those working in the area of behavioral finance in understanding the role that cognitive heuristic plays in investment management activities and market efficiency.
